    I just found your channel. My man, you just sold me on the Tascam X8. I already own the zoom H8 and I did a video of recording rap vocals in the park with an SM7B, but I wanted something a bit smaller to carry around. I'll be picking up the X8 instead of the H6. A great video. You earned a new subscriber.

      Zoom makes great products. I would have loved to stay with Zoom but the X8 was appealing to me more so because ofn32-bit float. But now zoom has come with the f3 and f6 which I would probably have looked to those rather than the x8 but all are great

    Thank you for the demo. Very nice to see and hear there differences.
    As a side note, and I don't want to come across as "that guy" but you might have simply misspoken and didn't catch it. 5:48 Quarter twenty is a reference for a thread type. For example a 1/4-20 would refer to the threads on your tripod mount. A 1/4" bolt with a 20 thread per inch count. You may have been referring to a 1/4" phone jack or 1/4" phone plug. Having said that, The H6 I've used does have 1/4" phone jacks. The H6 equipped with 4 Neutrik (like) Combo XLR/1/4" TRS jacks. Just plug it in to the center of those "XLR" jacks and you're good to go. The Tascam also uses the Neutrik-like connectors (they are actually made by ZWEE on the Tascam.
    One thing to be careful with when in 32bit float, there will be a bit of drift in audio when syncing with video. additionally, once to capture in 32bit, down sample to 24bit to conform to the 24bit standard and also avoid that sync drift. Oh and file sizes are quite a bit larger in 32bit.
    As for the aesthetics, It's subjective for sure. My rig is a bag with me all the time. No one sees it but me.

    • @quayvision
      @quayvision  8 месяцев назад

      Yeah definitely miss spoke. Meant qrt inch trs cable and yes, both have it.. idk what I was thinking at the time of recording this. 🤦🏾‍♂️
      And yeah I have noticed a slight drift using 32bit float. Easy fix in post but annoying to deal with nonetheless.
      Thanks for calling me out tho! Forces me to be better with my words. Just started out with RUclips I get a bit nervous and just start saying random shit. I need to be better!

    That demonstration of recording too distorted was exactly what I was looking for, I especially liked how you showed trying to fix it in post and the sound was still distorted at lower volume or the hissing was more pronounced when bringing up the level of the low gain recording. I was almost going to be a cheapskate and just get the zoom but having the extra "security" of being able to fix a bad recording with the Tascam is worth the extra money to me. Also, I have had zoom products in the past and the ease of operation is not the best, a lot of menu diving. Thanks for the "to the point" review!

    • @quayvision
      @quayvision  Год назад

      Thanks man!
      I love the X8 and if you want to save a little. The Tascam X6 is also a good portion for a slight price reduction. You just get the 2 xlr ports instead of 4. But being able to set it and forget it is huge!
      Also I agree. The zoom h6 menu system was a nightmare. Tascam is a bit for user friendly but still going to take a slight learning curve but really easy.

    Nice comparison. 32 bit float is definitely the way to go for unpredictable audio level inputs. I hope Zoom releases a new H6 with 32 bit float, or an equivalent, as some of us have invested heavily in their versatile proprietary microphone capsule system ( XYH-6 X/Y Mic | MSH-6 Mid-Side Mic | SGH-6 Shotgun Mic | SSH-6 Mid-Side Stereo Shotgun Mic | EXH-6 Dual XLR/TRS Input Expansion ) for field recording.

    Great video. I own the H6, F3, F8nPro and the X8 as well as some others. All are fantastic recorders; which one I love most is impossible to say, all depends on my mood and ergonomics. I think the X8 is nearly perfect, except some reliability issues. It's strength is versatility. It has a variety of inputs and connectors, it can act as a mixer, a podcast console, it has DSP effects... But it is less comfy when you want to use it in a soundbag. If I were forced to keep only one these recorders, it would probably be the X8.

    One thing you didn't mention is how you can use the X8 as an audio interface as well. You can even directly connect it to your iPhone and have it synched to your video and you can use the bluetooth dongle for timecode sync. (you'll need a timecode broadcaster tho). Oh, and you can record in 2 formats at the same time, so you can have one 24bit file and one 32bit file. This makes conversions a thing of the past if your levels are set properly.

      Something to consider when using 32-bit recorder as an audio interface to record to a DAW is if your DAW can record in 32-bit float. Not all of them can. I think Logic still can't. Also I heard that some DAWs can record 32-bit float but won't be able to correctly normalize the audio if it clips.

    Having a difficult time finding a review of these devices that doesn't have a music bed on it. Great review, but... why add background music to an audio recorder demo? At the very end, you do turn off the music, and at that point, the difference becomes clear. Does the Zoom H6 really have that much of a noise floor? Hiss city!

    How well would the Zoom H6 record noise when recording outdoors? I need to document/record noise that is produced by an HVAC (Air Conditioner) while it is running. I tried to record the noise with my phone, but the recording is not clear and the recording does not sound like when you hear the noise in person. Should a mic be used with this recorder to capture the noise? If yes, which mic is recommended?

    • @quayvision
      @quayvision  Год назад +1

      H6 would be great to record those low frequencies but yes I would 100% recommend using a microphone to do so.
      And depending on what you’re budget is.. I would personally use a boom mic. Something like a Rose NTG5.
      You basically want a directional mic. Not one that will pick up a lot of ambient noise if you’re just trying to pull the ac sounds .

      Battery isn’t great when using phantom power. Shot a 2hr podcast using fresh batteries and the tascam died right around the 2nd hour.
      Will last a lil longer if you aren’t using phantom power.
      But I’ve learned my lesson and every time I use it from here out I will have it plugged into ac power via usb-c.
      That way you can power it for as long as you want without worrying about it dying. But you do need batteries inside in order to use the AC power but it doesn’t actually use any of the battery. Hope that made sense lol

    The bit-rate has nothing to do with the sound quality!
    Who ever tells this is someone who has no clue what he/she is talking about!
    What is producing the sound quality are the mic's and the pre amps.
    You can have an excellent sound quality with good mic's and a top pre amp and a recording of 44,1kHz and 16bit and you can get a horrible sound quality with top mic's and a 32bit recording but using bad pre amps.
    And to be honest - standard audio like music and standard voice, especially podcast, does not even need 48kHz and 24bit to sound good.
    44,1kHz and 16bit is a great sounding solution for everyone who is not working as a professional sound designer.
    The signal chain is
    1. The mic!!!
    2. The pre amp!
    3. The recorder.
    Handle your audio in this direction.
    A bad mic will ruin every single recording no matter what kind of gear you are using for the recording or processing.
    Think about the recorder in the end.
    A standard 24bit recorder is good enough for all of you.
    No one can hear the difference between a 16 or 32bit recording if there is no distortion.

  • @averyyoutube

    As impressive as that test was, it didn't give any points to the Tascam for me. With the backup track always going on the H6, nearly all situations where you accidentally blew out your audio would be fixed with the -12 backup track. And as for 32 vs 24bit audio - there's simply no one on earth that can tell the difference for any social media. The difference would come on the big screen, in which case we'd ask... what are you doing with these tiny things?
    It came down to 3 things for me. The Zoom H6 has proven itself worthy. It's been around for how long now? You get just as many review videos from 2020 as you do from 8 years ago. Impressive that it's still being put up against the top dogs in 2023.
    The interface and user experience. Cell phones have finally become almost perfect when it comes to touch sensitivity, accuracy, etc., but these devices? Not a chance. Depending on a large touch screen when you don't need to - I am one who doesn't want it.
    And then the big one. Build quality. I don't want to drop either one of these... but while the Zoom will likely take a dent, chip off some plastic, it should keep working just fine. Good luck doing anything when you drop that screen on the ground. It's light and feels lower quality than that H6 - by a far margin.
    I am using a power bank to power the H6, so battery life is not an issue. The app? Neat but I'm not giving up my cell phone so I can stand across the room. Zoom's got remotes that work just fine if you're in a pinch, but honestly, it just never happens that you can get the mic's where you need them, but can't get yourself to your recorder.

    • @quayvision
      @quayvision  10 месяцев назад

      hey man, I get it. your opinion is valid. if all that doesn't matter to you, then stick with the Zoom H6. I never said it was a bad recorder. I used my zoom H6 yesterday and still is just fine. BUT I still prefer the newer tech and for me, having the app with bluetooth is game changing because I shoot weddings so connecting my recorder to the DJ Speaker and being able to stop the recording while I'm standing on the other side of the room recording dinner speeches with the camera and not having to physically go over there and do it is amazing to me. just because you don't use it doesn't mean its worthless to other people that use it. at the end of the day, these are tools and if something will allow me to do my job a little bit easier ill take it anyway.
      But thanks for the comment man.
