I like the Tascam because it has much better stereo separation.
The differences :
- one recorder seems to have a "low-cut" - less rumble like sound- , wider image, less depth, sound easier to use
- the other recorder: more depth, narrower stereo image, more accurate timbre, lower bass or « rumble like » (more work to do on mix time).
Notes :
scene 1: B larger, low cut
scene 2 : B more accurate timbre of rooster crowing
scene 3 : B low cut A more bass
scene 4 : A more bass, B wider more accurate, pfff hard to feel
scene5 : A wider, low cut, B more depth… to short to be sure
scene 6 : A more depth, B closer flat image
scene 7 : B more accurate timbre ? Very different bird call, more depth, I don't know which bird flight noise I prefer between A and B,
Sorry for my English
Your English is fine.
Thanks for the video! Which capsule configuration did you use on both recorders? XY or AB?
Thanks so much for this. I bought a Tascam X8 and was toying with getting the Sony used. I picked the X6 over the Sony 6 times out of 7 in your video. Saved me a bunch of money by not wanting the Sony anymore.
Hello, I am from Italy. I like your videos very much, thank you. I have the Tascam x6. Can you tell me please the exactly name of the protection for the Wind for this recorder? Thank you, good by.
Great comparison! Just want to say how much I have been enjoying your informative and entertaining videos, Marcel and Libby! Wishing you continued success! ... Plus a quick, selfish question since you have both the X6 and F3: in your experience if you plugged in the same microphone to each recorder with similar settings, would the resulting audio be fairly equivalent? (I truly have been on the fence between these and if quality is truly the same may sacrifice some size for flexibility)
Hey have you tried the zoom essentials new series? Would like to see some comparison with these two !
Which is the best microphone between Tascam X6 and Sony PCM D100 for recording birdsong? Thanks for all the content you make. 🙏
Marcel hi, do you know if Tascam solved the noise/hum problem above 20khz?
What a fun challenge! Rather than try to decide between Sony or Tascam, I just went with what I liked the best:
Scene 1: B (B is a bit wider and has a little less hi-mid push in the center than A)
Scene 2: A (A sounds less pronounced in the center hi-mids than B)
Scene 3: B (B wider and able to pinpoint sounds easier)
Scene 4: B (B is a bit more centered and defined in the low rumble reverb of the hall)
Scene 5: B (either, really)
Scene 6: B (easier to pick out background detail with B - less swamped)
Scene 7: B (similar feeling to scene 6, but a different recorder!)
After checking the website, it looks like majority X6. There’s a tonal balance to the Sony that I’m not completely getting along with, but it’s still great. And I'm a sucker for stereo width, and getting more of that with the X6. Pleasantly surprised by the Tascam.
Thats also a great idea! Thank you for taking part!! :)
thanks. what about review new revision of zoom m4 mictrak? they fixed terrible things on start
Would you consider the Tascam X6 a “professional” recorder? On a side note, which 32-bit recorder do you think has the best built in stereo mics? Thank you.
There is definitely a difference (I would say in the low-mid region). Sony has a more flat spectrum. After peeking at the first answer, I guessed all the rest of the scenes. Interesting test and a great video, thanks!
Hi Marcel, have you tried wireless XLR and do away with cables? Sound record with Xvive U3C?
Hi! Oh no I never did that. Mostly because of the 48kHz. I don't record that low.
I seemed to pick the Tascam X6 as the winner a majority of the time.
Tascam recorders seemed to roll off the high end up above 14-15k in a pleasant way.
I had a DR100 MKIII and transitioned to the Sound Devices Mixpre 3 II and I made an EQ preset to match because there was this sort of nasty high end on the Mixpre using the same preamps. I use external dedicated Sound Devices pres because I like the input and output transformers. I record line-in. Even then, I like the sound of the Tascam better and how it captures the output of my pres.
I feel like the Mixpre 3 II, and Zoom F6 32 bit recorders are like Color Negative film. You get a TON of latitude, but the image needs to be kneaded and worked on to make it look the best. It needs serious color timing and grading for it to really work well. The Tascam is kind of like reversal film. There's not as much latitude, is has a lot of exposure weaknesses, but it looks incredible if you get it right.
Hello, will you test old zoom h1n vs the new model? Thx for your attention
Probably not.
Question, can’t find a answer to:
I have a Tascam X8 and a Sennheiser MKE 600. I have the cable with a 3.5 jack on to connect to the X8 and I aslo have the cable with XLR to connect to the X8. Which should I use? Is there any downside to using the 3.5 jack into the X8 instead for the XLR into the X8? Is the pre amp the same with either? Is the range the same (volumes)? Really appreciate anyone’s time if this can be answered. Thank you.
The specs of the MKE600 are slightly better when it’s used with phantom power. I can’t tell about the difference of the X8 preamps on both the inputs, 3.5mm and XLR. On the DR-100mk3 the XLR inputs (preamps) are MUCH better than the 3.5mm.
Which tripod stand would you recommend for the PCM D100 and traveling? Keep up the great content :)
Hi! Just like a small one or would you like to use the tripod for cameras as well?
@@FreeToUseSounds Thank you for the reply. Just a lightweight tripod for the field recorder.
Can I connect the iPhone 15 Pro Max to the Tascam X8?
Thank you for another amazing video. I thought that the X6 shockingly beat out the d100 in most of the scenes. Would you say the x6 has better in-built mics than the x8?
Hi! Oh I think they are using the same microphones. However one big difference is that connection. Remember you can take off the microphones from the X8? You can't do that with the X6. I don't have the X8 with me so we can't make that test.
@@FreeToUseSounds Okay, thank you for the info. That would be great if they are the same mics. If the x6 is lacking the ultrasonic hum that was plaguing the x8 in 192/32 stereo recordings, the former could be a better alternative.
@@mmaged2287hi! X8 and X6 are NOT using the same microphone capsules, but they are very close though. You can find some comparison videos on YT.
If I buy your sounds, is it easy to download the whole thing onto my harddrive?? or do I have to manually select each one?
Hi! Downloading the whole library on Gumroad or Bandcamp won’t work so easily without selecting. However for Bandcamp you can use Batchcamp add on or use the script on Github for Gumroad. I believe its called Gumroad Batch Downloader.
@@FreeToUseSounds Thank you so much! I will try that! :) Nice work btw! Lots of cool sounds, hopefully you have some really good thunder storms :)
@@FreeToUseSounds I couldn't get the extension to work, so manually downloading all.. Now how do I extract the zip files when the name is too long? Without manually doing each one to rename????
I dont know witch one, but there's definitely a difference. Maybe it's the windproofing, but I find the A has a better upper range than the B. Scene One
The Tascam sounds more 3- dimensional.. ans slightly less harsh higher frequencies. What wind protection for the X6 do you use? I just got my X6… now I‘ve got to learn to use it…
Ahh you should go for the new Radius Windshield Company. I ordered mine now but it takes a little bit until it arrives.
So what i hear is (S for Sony and T for Tascam in order of A/B): 1) S-T, 2) T-S, 3) S-T, 4) T-S, 5) S-T, 6) S-T, 7) T-S :)
Also 1 question. I would like to start my field recording steps. I have a pair of Lewitt LCT 140 cardiod condenser mics, which have pretty much of self noise, 20dbA, and I am thinking of matching them with the zoom f3 and an ulanzi mt49. On the other hand I am considering the tascam x6. Which option would you suggest with this status? Thanks in advance and keep up those videos!! Cheers!!
Hi! Thank you so much for taking on the challenge! :).. Hmm, if you have the F3 already and you don't need onboard microphones, there is no need to spend on another recorder. You have to buy cables and also wind protection, an AB bar as well.
@@FreeToUseSounds I don't have either the f3 or the x6. I already have a rode stereo bar. The combo of f3 do cost around 450Euro, same about the x6 with the wind protection and ulanzi mini stand. It's the matter of how much worth are the lewitt microphones instead of the x6 build in. PS. I only have the stock foam wind protection for the LCT 140.
@@Chrkeremetsidis Okay, the best approach is to use what you have. Now, all you need is a recorder and cables. If you're tired of using the Lewitt in the future, the F3 might not be the right choice for you. With the X6 you can go out and record right away. But check our Radius Windshields newest wind protection for it and if you don’t need 32-bit, older recording devices are currently on sale.
@@FreeToUseSounds Do you have a link to that Radius Windshield for the X6, can´t seem to find it.
@@henrikjazza Hi Henrik. The product is not on the page yet but please head over to Instagram instagram.com/radiuswindshields/ and ask Megan how far they are with the portacapture wind protections. Otherwise here is the contact page: radiuswindshields.com/pages/contact
Sony just better: more neutral, better imaging and more detailed
In some cases Tascam looks better, because of brightness and flatter soundstage, it feels like it saves more info, but sony is more accurate, imo.
Surprisingly I liked Tascam more. Love it's wide stereo field and more soft and pleasant highs
Ok, so, I did my comparison by recording my desktop audio with FL Studio and then reviewing it through MetricAB. Here I renamed the mics to X and Y since they switch in the video, and I'll spoil them in a bit.
- Recorder X: sounds very mono despite a more marked direction in the panorama, picks up more high frequencies than Y
- Recorder Y: much more of a stereo sound and with way fewer phasing issues than X, pleasant "boomy" low-end, higher dynamic range (the middle section hovered at 22.0 PSR v.s. A's 16 or so)
Both have a weird and sudden 16 kHz roll-off, B's being particularly violent, but it A) doesn't matter too much and B) may have to do with RUclips's lossy audio.
REVEAL: The X is the Sony and the Y are the Tascam! I picked up the pattern through scenes 1, 3, and 5, where I could spot which was which. To me this was quite easy actually :P but maybe it's because I have good headphones though.
The Tascam is vastly superior in my opinion. The sounds feels right, whereas the Sony is muted and has phase issues... which I couldn't fix by hand! The weird flanger effect at 1:22 is baked in both sides of the recording. No idea why this actually happens as I don't think it should? But yeah, the more expensive mic wins here!
I prefer Tascam over the Sony in this test. Recently I bought the X8 and I love it!
Both sound very good. I have the Sony PCM-A10 and the sound is very similar to B. Has a little more clear sound in the high tones than the low tones. I dont know if i am wrong but to me the Sony is B.
Hi! Well it depends what scene you're referring too. We have 7 different recording locations. You can go to the website and review your pick.
Good to know the X6 is that good. But I would really like to know what mic patterns were used in this test. The stereo image of the Tascam is much better imo. There is a video on YT which compares the D100 to the Tascam X8, and they are much closer. I also know, there is almost no difference between X6 and X8, so this seems a bit strange to me.
Yeah, not so easy. For most the Sony was my top pick (I looked at the results) but a few I thought the x8 was slightly better. Both are very good though.
Thank you Simon!! :)
I noticed better wind protection on the Tascam. It does not say it, but it looks like my Bumblebee.
It's easy to tell. D100 is just more clear and has more detail. while the tascam is muddy and mixed.
My guesses
1. A - Sony, B - Tascam ✔
I prefered B here because A was too bright.
2. A - Sony, B - Tascam ❌
I prefered A because B had more noisefloor or this harsh background sound? So I guess it should be the Tascam :D.
3. A - Sony, B - Tascam ✔
I prefered A because the sound was crispy.
4. A - Tascam, B - Sony ✔
I prefered B because there was more bass and sound was more rich, A was lacking in this umpf sound. It's funny cause it's like 2 different recordings for me.
5. A - Sony, B - Tascam ❌
I prefered A because of the same reason as before, more bass and more rich sound.
6. A - Sony, B - Tascam ✔
I prefered A because sound was clearer not so mudded as in B.
7. A - Tascam, B - Sony ✔
I prefered B because sound was clearer not so mudded as in B. I had this feeling as B was simply louder.
It seems like Tascam has more low ends but lack of crispy sound. Overall I prefered tascam 2 out of 6 scenes and I think it's a great recorder for 300$
Im at the field before the train station, I like the bassier more ambient recorder, I think it was B and I wanna say thats the Tascam, I own a Sony recorder and for me personally it lacks bass and ambiance, we shall see!! 😁😁
Yup I knew it! I know what Sony sounds like lol its got clarity but sacrificing low end and ambiance, scene 3 and scene 7 are the two I paid more attention to and I could tell right away which one was Sony
I got scene 2 wrong but looks like I managed to get the rest right haha. That's surprising.
Nice!!
Exactly the same for me - I even suspect the result for scene 2 is mixed up …?
Interesting Mic freq range 🤔 I can't find information on the internet.
Ah yes. I have recordings with the Sony that are above 60kHz.
@@FreeToUseSounds and what about Tascam? 🤔
Thanks for you videos and libraries 🙌🤗
@@rolardnbwell, this one is a 96kHz recorder so the cut off is at 48kHz and it barely reaches that regions with the built in microphones. But it also depends on the sound source. I am sure a loud train brake could be higher than 30 kHz.
Hi waiting for Zoom essential
What is the point when the sony is unavailable?
They are still available from China and Japan with English interfaces. Usually around $800 to $1000 but available nonetheless.
Thanks for jumping in, Dylan. Yes, the purpose of making these videos is, of course, because we have a RUclips channel dedicated to audio gear, and we enjoy creating content about it. We just bought a Tascam DR-100iii and we'll definitely make a video about it, even though it's discontinued.
I think people forget that RUclips is a platform for everyone and about almost everything. This video is also for those who own the Sony recorder and are considering upgrading for maybe better sound quality?
However, we also enjoy making videos with the gear we have to authentically showcase the sounds of the places we visit. I feel like not many people pay attention to this fact, so it probably wouldn't even make a difference if we made only one sound sample in our backyard garage.
And without even saying it, we hope this video also showcases that newer audio gear doesn't necessarily mean it's better. This recorder is over 10 years old and still sounds amazing. It’s like telling RUclipsrs who are street photographers not to make videos about old nostalgic photo cameras just because they aren't 'available' anymore, even though they are.
We believe in the value of all equipment, new or old, and hope to share that perspective and for those looking for only the latest gear, we understand this isn’t the channel for them.
@@FreeToUseSoundsI've been trying to decide between a Tascam DR-100III or Sony D-10 so I'm really looking forward to your video whenever it comes out!
@@CollectionOfJunkpicking up this machine next week :)
1.2 difficult to differentiate!!
3.4.5,6.7 was more obvious and hit the right answer! mainly the noise!.... the sony base noise was a smaller and flat, more rapid dynamic decrease when bird sound appeared!
The ones that sounded better, richer, less harsh to me were 1.B, 2.A, 3.B, 4.B, 5.A, 6.B, 7.A .....I haven't a clue which one was which though!
And having now looked at the results, I see I favour one by 85%!!!
That's awesome! Thank you for taking up on the challenge!
The first one I think was the task cam the second one I’m pretty sure was the Sony because they have very wide sound and I have Sony so they have very wide sound The task cam does too if you know how to get it where it’ll get wider, but my favorite has to be the Sony because I have a Sony so I guess I’m a little biased Another recorder I love is the Olympus LS series and also the SM I’m sorry the DS 600 or 700 I’ve had both of them and I’ve also had the SWM802 model from Olympus, which I loved but again, Sony is always my favorite, because for one it’s more accessible for us blind people now to ask him it’s good. I’ve had a task him and it was all right, but the Sony is always my favorite. Another one you might want to try in the zoom H one essential. It’s really good too. It has a floating bit right it’s awesome. Bit rate.
Hi! Thank you so much for your comment. Lets check because it really depends on the scenes but in the first scene Recorder A was the Sony PCM-D100 and Recorder B was the Tascam X6. For us its really hard right now to get the H1E or the other E series recording devices. They just don't sell them here where we are right now. We have to wait :)
@@FreeToUseSounds oh no, I’m sorry I should’ve known the second one was a task cam crazy me. I forgot I had to task him like that but it’s been about 10 years since I’ve had him so yeah. sorry that you can’t get the other ones right now. I am sorry about that. I hope you know I love the sounds you have they’re awesome question for you? Could you do a grocery ambience? I love grocery stores. I am blind and also autistic and grocery stores always make me feel better when I have a bad overload. Because I know I can go find a good grocery store sound and feel more better. @@FreeToUseSounds my voiceover is not letting me see the links. I don’t know why but it’s not letting me see any of the links which totally 100% sucks cause I wanted to go up there.
I'm not sure at all. I guess B could be the Sony? Have fun in Korea. Can I guess? You bought the Zoom Essential Recorders - right?
Hi Til!! Ohh that depends on the scene :). We couldn't find the Essentials in Korea yet. We actually bought a third order ZYLIA ambisonic microphone and the TASCAM DR 100iii. This recorder will go up in price too over the next few years.
I find the tascam to have some undesirable phasing. Other than that I think they are both good. I think I prefer the Sony as it appears to have a wider stereo field and a little more depth imo
However I preferred the tascam in scene 7. Somehow the crows sounded better…😂
We loved the crows!! :)
I think it would have better to use the same high quality external microphone for each recorder as this could be a difference in microphone quality.
Hmm, now you’ve got me thinking-what high-quality external microphones should I use that I don’t have? The X6 has XLR ports, which the Sony doesn’t, and personally, I don’t use 3.5 mm plugin power microphones. For beginners who’d rather use the built-in mics on such recorders, I think the video is just fine. However, if we do buy external mics in the future, we’ll definitely make a video about it using both recording devices.
@@FreeToUseSounds - The reason being, the quality of the built-in mics may vary and it’s only fair to neutralize that variation by using the same mics.
Ah, I see. Well, one of the reasons for this video was to highlight the quality of the built-in microphones, not to use external ones. Imagine someone who is interested in the Tascam X6 and already has the Sony PCM D100. Here is a comparison video that might help someone decide whether to buy a new recorder or continue using the older one with built-in microphones. Sorry if this video didn't meet your expectations, but we do appreciate your feedback. Have a great weekend.
@@chrisjenkins9978many people like myself are 100 percent evaluating the quality of the built in mics, so it wouldn’t have been better overall. It just would have served your needs better.
@@FreeToUseSoundsit definitely met my expectations, as I’m looking for the best self contained field recorder I can get. I can throw pluggys onto my A10 and get D100 quality, but I’m looking for D100 quality or close to it with built in mics.
I think recorder B sounds more natural. Best!
Hi Alex! In which scene do you think recorder B was used because depending on the scene, this could be either the Tascam or the Sony.
I think so
I chose the one that I liked best. And apparently I chose the Tascam 6 times and the sony just once!
The PCM D100 is a legend but has it met its match?
Hi! Oh no it hasn’t. Try to record something loud next to X6 and the microphones overload right away and if you go close to electronics, you get interference. Nothing that happens with a recorder like the PCM D100.
I wish Sony would bring it back into production.
To me the x6 sounds way better, Sony D100’s mid-high frequency sounds too much in my opinion…
Ehm... for me at least in the scene 2 the rooster changes its position. In A sounds - for me - a bit right, in B certainly left. Any memories where it was really?
I just listened to this three more times, as well as to the original recordings. It's the same recording location, but it's crazy; you're right. The mic positions were spaced out on both, however, it's like the rooster is more centered behind my head on recording A but slightly left on recording B. Since this is the PCM D100, I think it's because of the spacing. You can go further out on the Sony, which makes it more directional sounding to the left. Great catch!

So which one do you think was the Sony? :) We have 7 different locations. But don't lookit up before :)
@FreeToUseSounds I noted as I went along and my results were verified by following the link to the answers. I promise I didn't cheat
Scene 1 - B - Sony - More depth
Scene 2 - A - Sony - More depth
Scene 3 - A - Sony, probably hardest take, both sounds fine and even B sounds bit comforting
Scene 4 - A - Sony - More depth
Scene 5 - A - Sony - More depth
Scene 6 - A - Sony - More depth
Scene 7 - A - Sony - Crow screams was super at depth at A
Interesting that in some scenes I maybe prefer Tascam or even just like it more.
Hi! Thank you so much for your pick! Feel free to check the website link. We listed the answers. :)
@@FreeToUseSounds Whoa, I'm a hidden Tascam fan!
Yeah!! :)
I think b is the Sony, sounds a bit more depth
Well, that depends on the recording. We have 7 different scenes.
Sony is discontinued
That's your take away?
@@FreeToUseSounds 🤣 - no sorry :-) just wanted to mention it. Listened to many videos here on the channel - so great and i am getting actually deeper into field recording as I am often in nature. Fortunately I can re-use my equipment that I bought when I did some wedding films.
