- Well it's all soldered together and running so let's chuck it in the TRX4-based NWSD Scattergun and see how it climbs?!

What ESC? I heard you say the motor was a Hobbywing, but I see no info for the ESC. Is it a budget sensored model? Link to the product would be great.
It's actually a no-name 120a ESC (although unbranded and uses the same software as Hobbywing) and the motor is a Surpass 3548 1400kv. Unfortunately in further testing the magnets fell off the motor and the ESC set on fire.
I've got a follow-up coming soon, which has similar results and has some recommendations for anyone looking to do budget brushless sensorless outrunners.
For now I'd suggest these cheapo ESC's are probably only good in sensored mode as I've just had too many fires and issues using their sensorless startup at low RPM.
I'm going to keep investigating, although it's starting to rack-up the cost, and see if I can find the right settings etc but for now I won't recommend any of it due to the temperamental nature.
@@JustScalin Definitely sounds unworthy of time and $$. I believe the Castle SW4 is the highest quality budget esc (as opposed to Mamba X) for sensorless outrunner motors. I currently use an SW4 with a Turnigy D3542 outrunner and it’s smooth and powerful. 👍🏼
Yeah the SW4 is the best sensorless ESC. I run one on my comp rig. Will possibly try the surpass motors in it as they have better availability in the UK
I find some budget ESCS really struggle with outrunners. Surpass and GoolRC ones I've tried have resulted in the ESC getting hot and the motor getting boiling hot! This is both with relatively low KV outrunners and high KV helicopter ones too. Maybe because they can't cope with so many poles?
Then some other ECSs such as a Leopard 60a and a Hobbywing quicrun both ran without any temperature problems at all either in the ESC or motor although not as smooth starting up as some of the better controllers.
There seems to be a fundamental issue that effects some units though when it comes to temps. Even stuff with a fast outrunner like my Feiyue truck, if I try to use a GoolRC style ESC, the motor will get red hot even driving around a living room. Stock ESC or Leopard with the same motor doesn't have the same problem.
Castle is probably the best out there for sensorless either with outrunners or inunners. Some Hobbywing units are pretty good too.
Yeah I think it’s something to do with the way the mosfets switch and cooling available. Thanks for letting me know some ideas of others!
I have this speed controller with a tenshock crawler motor, i too was super impressed for the cost. I have a hobbywing brushless programing card and was able to update and adjust the settings on the controller too, what an absolute bargain. Thanks for the video.
Nice! I think it would work a lot better with a sensored motor. I'm having issues with a smooth sensorless start-up and there's a follow-up coming soon which shows a motor on fire!
For your next test 😉 go to your local rc fly shop and get the smallest outrunner with 25mm spacing and 1000-1700kv, run that on a HW 10bl60 and see the surprising outcome 😀
Found a 3007 and it still has tonnes of torque and descent drag brake.
I could never find the 3007 but one of those would be perfect for a build in doing
I posted some videos of outrunners running dirt cheap quadcopter esc's. Flashing am32 firmware on them can get some insanely slow speeds for dirt cheap.
Not trying to hijack. It seemed like something you would legitimately be interested in.
Definitely going to check them out!
I had that esc and my revolver v2 snubnose and it was amazing until i got my micro x and it was a different animal cheers from texas 💯💯
Yeah it was a rubbish ESC in the end
@@JustScalin yeah
Surpass's outrunner motor magnet is too weak to break when used in a vehicle.
It has been broken 4 times and now it is fixed with epoxy before it is broken.
Thanks for the info, I had quite a few magnets fly off and then jam. Having to open it up and epoxy it kind of defeats the easy budget element I guess
@Just Scalin' -- great videos, thank you! looking for a super-quiet motor - ESC combo for my VS4-10 Pro build, what do you recommend? it's going to be for my 12-year-old son, and he likes high speed on trails, I don't want to build a system that just crawls! Thank you again.
For trails I like the Hobbywing stuff, it seems to be better weatherproofed and durable. My go-to would be the Axe 550 3300 which gives plenty of power but really good low-down crawling ability too. I used to run one in a nearly stock TRX4 G500 with quite a large pinion and it'd crack 35+mph easily as well as have great low-down control.
If you have fitment issues then something a bit more compact with a ton of punch would be the Castle Slate 3800kv paired with a Mamba X. Loads more tun-ability and probably a tiny bit more top-end speed, but more expensive and possibly a little less durable.
For a 12 year old I'd steer clear of the Holmes Hobbies or 3bros motors, because they are absolutely awesome but don't survive as well if you dunk them in mud or overheat them.
I beat down on my Axe 3300kv and it's still going strong, although these days does sound a little tired it's still doing great in my trail truck.
@@JustScalin Thank you so much! Two follow up questions; 1- does Hobbywing fit to VFD transmission w/o any modification, I thought it’s 550 size? 2- Which Holmes Hobbies motor do you recommend? Thank you again 🙏🏻
@@mtzl1930 yes the HW is a 550 unfortunately. If I was buying a Holmes Motor for trail I'd get whatever their fastest 540ish size is in the Puller Pro
Hi great video
I purchased the 3542 what esc would you recommend me getting for bomber .I'm on tight budget sadly
Kind regards
Hello and good day sir! :-) what Canyon did you use for that motor? I noticed that the part where the pinion slips on is a lot thicker than all my other Motors.
5mm RW Racing pinions
What is a high-pitched squeal is it the FC or is it the motor
Set that up with a planetary drive , you lose speed but the motor barely sees load, throttle will be smoother considering it's a non sensored outrunner
That’s a great idea! I’ll explore that when I revisit this series
Its been a while since I have seen a deans plug and electrical tape lol
Yeah I’ve swapped to XT60 for convenience. Deans is still technically more efficient but crawlers don’t really need that
@@JustScalin I never use deans for my crawlers. I just don't feel safe lol. I run mamba X in all my crawlers and I run all my lights directly from esc and I use direct power servos that are ran directly from esc. Just don't feel comfortable using a deans for that. Now, if I was using just a brushed setup, I'm sure it would be fine
Hi,very nice test
Is the shaft diameter of C3530 5mm?
Yes. However the magnets on the motor like to come loose so not sure it’s worth it
@@JustScalin Oh really.... Thanks for information. will Try another Motor.
I'm sad my esc was bunk because I would've had a really cheap sensored Capra 😭😭😭
Yeah that would have been cool
What chassis is that for the TRX?
It's a Northwest Scaler Designs Scattergun v2: www.nwscalerdesigns.com/product/nwsd-scattergun-chassis-for-trx4/
I run the v2 on my trail truck and the v3 for my comp truck. The v3 is mind-bendingly good!
I asked to use this kit on a scx10ii to climb slowly?
I wouldn’t bother, the motor wasn’t reliable
Just get some corrosion x and spray the electronics in your rig, boom, waterproof. Been doing it for years both rc crawler and seaplanes.
Yeah, and don’t use cheap rubbish ESCs like this one
That's is an rc plane outrunner motor. Interesting.
It is, shame the magnets aren’t stuck on as well as I would have liked
How did you get the pinion gear on the motor shaft? It is round.
For testing I just tightened up the set screw. If I was going to run it for a longer time I’d grind a flat slot on the motor shaft to make sure it had a better grip
@@JustScalin i tried turning the shaft down to 3.175 but broke a carbon bit in 2 seconds. Ended up turning a custom steel shaft to 3.175 to fit the motor gear its not hardened but still holding up, the injora transmission requires a 0.7m 15t you cant get that in a 5mm shaft.
the motor is outrunner surpass hobby, and the esc unbranded, like he say Ebay esc, the torque of the motor was surprise for me, the motor depend diameter can cost from $25 to $70, thanks now i want one to experiment for my self
hello do you have a programming card (instruction) for this esc? There was also another ESC (look a like the sams) on ebay a bit more expensive from "fire phoenix" with xt60 plug 6a BEC up to 2_4S can programm with Hobbywing programming card.
I've been using the same card I got from a Hobbywing 1080. This is because the firmwares have the same settings protocol.
@@JustScalin Thank You!
I send you a message on facebook about the other esc.
Hi.. are you using 5mm pinion size?
What rims are you using?
SSD steelies
What pinion and spur are you running?
Honestly I can’t remember, sorry
So do you think it could work well with some 35-50$ ESC?
I think if it didn’t set on fire, yeah. Probably a settings issue but I’m not sure it’s a money saver
What esc is he using??
A crap one from Amazon that I really wouldn't recommend
Esc is water proof
is the motor fit on the tranny?
Yes
That’s not going to last that esc is junk
