  • Shallow the shaft with this simple "wall" drill.
A popular topic in golf instruction is how to SHALLOW THE SHAFT in the early transition from backswing to downswing.
The benefits of this movement are to help shift the club path more neutral or IN-to-OUT to help them hit the ball FARTHER and have the potential to DRAW the golf ball more easily.
Shallowing the shaft is opposite to the very common error so many golfers make of actually STEEPENING THE SHAFT in transition and shifting their swing path more OUT-to-IN resulting in slicing and weak shots.
Learning to make this move in your golf swing requires a combination of different movements with your arms and your wrists, but I have the SIMPLEST DRILL EVER to help you feel the necessary movements and train this important move into your swing.
This "game-changing" drill combines ALL the necessary feels and movements into one simple motion that anyone can do and start to see the benefits immediately!

The hanger training aid really helps with sensory feedback on twisting the club during this drill.

Rob...I'm a senior player and have been at the game for 18 years, going from the rotary style, shift change and, ultimately, the S & T method...I've taken in person lessons and, have followed a half dozen RUclips instructors over the years...You, sir, are the gold standard for an online Stack & Tilt instructor...From your in depth explanations of how the wrists work to your excellent drills, you're instructional videos are the "creme de la creme" of online S & T instruction...Thank you...Tony Shans

Great drill rob , I had a pro make me do this. And once club head was rubbing on the wall . I started turning. Just a little earlier turn feel than you recommended. But same concept. Really did wonders. And I warm up like this on a wall before a round at the range

Rob, thanks for posting this video. I finally understand exactly how the club should move during the downswing, and this drill is the best I've ever seen to learn how to shallow. I have had a lot of frustration with the club being a little outside. Th drill corrects the "throwing outward" action that I was doing with the right arm on the downswing. Like you said; keep the clubhead on the wall all the way down until the handle is about waist-high and then you're in perfect position to pivot through with power and hit from the inside. As long as you are making a good weight shift, this drill takes care of everything else. Thanks again.

By chance I found if I drop my arms during my downswing (especially with my driver) I was able to make powerful contact with the golf ball. You have perfectly explained the mechanics and provided an excellent drill so I understand what I need to do to maintain my swing.

Absolutely a game changer for me... Thanks a million, Rob. That down the wall exercise and feel through the swing gave me consistency on the course yesterday that I haven't had in 15 years. Thanks for posting.

One more positive comment if I might, Rob....Your emphasis on the left shoulder bend and the exercises which you suggest to strengthen the "feel" has transposed my game...Although I have been committed to S & T for some time, I think the one technique which was really holding my game back from any real progression was the, somewhat, level shoulders of the rotational swing...I would use my left shoulder as "guide" for the ball but, never really worked on the full tilt...My ball contact has improved at least 50%...Thanks again, Rob...Tony Shans

Wowww, great results. Shallowing of the club has really helped my game. I tried it for the first time yesterday, a very windy day and had great results. At first I was pulling the ball left but by the forth hole I was hitting beautifully straight shots. I was achieving between 5 and 10 m extra. Also I found that shallowing the club is extremely helpful in getting ones hips and head into the right place at impact. I cannot thank you enough.

holy crap this is exactly what i needed and i see ths vid just came out yesterday. i am so close to being able to shallow the club. watched so many vids and trying to execute but the link in my brain has been missing as to what "shallowing" actually means. I just wrapped my head around being "steep" and "over the top" which is what i do. that motion of dragging the club along a wall makes perfect sense. i am a lefty and i have been pulling my driver to the right badly. will be watching this one multiple times trying to engrave it into my brain. it seems so simple and easy until you are standing over the ball and you cant see anything youre actually doing when swinging.

Thank you Rob. I tried this wall exercise yesterday and then went to the range. It was not perfect but I managed to produce some shots with the 8 iron that I have not seen before. The feeling was less effort and the ball flew further.. this could be a game changer exercise for me.

Great stuff, thank you. I'm a career Over the topper. I can shallow the shaft with more depth, confirmed on camera DTL view but contact tends to suffer.... coming from the inside gives a shallow AOA. I have a hard time shallowing the shaft and being able to hit down on the ball with a forward divot. As you know when u change one thing in the swing there are consequences. Great idea for a video is getting a forward divot while coming from the inside. I have not seen this explained well on any videos on RUclips. Thanks.
