One of my favorite movies. No frills just quality
The magic of modern movies.
Paul Thomas Anderson is unreasonably talented.
12:03 It is a weird interaction, but in my opinion it was because the father was right there, it was a move to show dominance how he was so much powerful than him being the father. Like "Its your daughter but if I say you would never hit her again"
Ah ok that makes more sense
6:50 Yes people used to live by their word, because your word was your value as a man, imagine that.
When I saw how soft spoken and gentle Daniel Day Lewis is in his interviews, it really hit home just how astonishingly good of an actor he is.
There's literally no resemblance at all, a total replacement of someone's core.
That can't be easy, and must take a toll on the psyche.
To me he's one of the greatest of all time.
Absolutely mesmerizing performance by Daniel Day Lewis.
Even after seeing him in others roles, when I watch this movie again, all I see onscreen is Daniel Plainview.
You don’t see the Butcher in Gangs of New York? He becomes that character as well.
"In the name of the Father", "My left foot", "The last of the Mohicans", "Lincoln", "Gangs of New York", "The Age of Innocence", "The Crucible", Daniel Day Lewis is probably the last of the truly great ones. Great reaction!
Not the last. Talent like his is rare, but someday another will come along. Perhaps not in our lifetime though.
He's commonly known as the method actor to all method actors.
The only one who comes close is Christian Bale for the way he transforms his body for roles.
DDL transforms his body, his accent, his posture and even certain little body movements.
It's so weird hearing his natural English accent.
@@NickThorbjørnsen2207 Nah, De Nrio and Pacino is more method than Bale.
@NostalgiNörden without a doubt they're better actors and method actors. I was only talking in terms of body transformation.
@@maxducoudray I hope so, I grew up with Mitchum, Rains, Olivier and the others, it is quite wonderful to be able to witness DDL's brilliance. Iam 60, like you say probably won't see this level of talent "rise up" again, just grateful for the wonders I have seen.
I do a dead-on Plainview impersonation, but my wife hates this movie, and she has told me that she will divorce me if I do it in her presence ever again. Make of that what you will.
....DRAINAGE
It's really not his son. It was his first partner's when he died in the well. He just used the boy until he was not useful anymore.
I'm 42 and i never took the time to watch this till recently...man, did i miss a gem.
Don't take this the wrong way, but I love your videos because you're so naive and ignorant with what movies you know of and which actors you can recognize. I appreciate your honesty about it and how you're making a massive effort to learn more about cinema and experience all these movies and you're able to make something out of it all. Keep being you and we will keep watching and enjoying these films all over again vicariously through you. Cheers!
It's hard to believe you haven't seen this. Daniel Day Lewis is perhaps the most amazing, transformative actors I have ever seen. He is unrecognizable from one performance to the next and from soft spoken Irishman he is. Like Oldman his dialects are spectacular.
Paul Dano is such a good actor man, the one who was supposed to play one of the siblings just left the project 1 week before the start of the shooting, so Paul Dano offered himself to play twins. Huge balls
I mean the Paul character didn’t require much but still, kudos to him
All this time I thought he was Bipolar and Paul was an alternate identity.
Anyone who loves this movie needs to read the book it's based on," oil" by Upton Sinclair, its truly a masterpiece
Semi-half-based-not really based at all-based.
@NostalgiNorden well yes, I didn't want to give out too much information to people who've never heard of it lol. For me the book is far superior, the focus on the son tells a much fuller story. The newer editions of oil are now called "oil(there will be blood)" which is pretty sad, not sure Upton Sinclair would like that
We all [kids in the U.S.] read The Jungle by Sinclair in middle school. The fact Paul Thomas Anderson adapted "Oil!" by Sinclair (a very dry (no pun intended) novel into this magnificent film is no small feat.
Oh man, I just realized: this is a Paul Thomas Anderson movie, which means you've got to do his OTHER masterpiece of masterpieces, the movie that put him on the map: "Boogie Nights". COMPLETELY different movie, and a GIANT stacked cast. WILD movie, a total party of a movie. HIGHLY recommending "Boogie Nights", you'd KILL on "Boogie Nights". Takes place in the 70s-early 80s Los Angeles porn scene. That is a MUST see.
YES!!!! Dude, so good to see someone react to something that not everyone else reacts to, and also that is generally regarded as one of the best films of this century so far. Certainly by me! I'm dropping everything to watch this right now!!!! PSYCHED!
Lots react and review this.
@@focalized No they haven't, jackass, nice try though. There are a few, not many. Not enough. Thanks for the babble, Focalized.
I personally saw this movie for the first time about 4 months ago and have watched it many times since. One of my personal favorites. A movie that must be watched more then once to truly understand its meanings.
Absolutely stunning performance by Daniel Day Lewis. He also transformed himself into Abraham Lincoln in “Lincoln”. Incredible actor.
This is literally my favourite film and it is so good to see a reaction to it. As good as No Country for Old Men is, it pains me that this isn't as well know because I think it's far superior.
With TWBB and NCFOM it is like coke and Pepsi most people think of say they prefer NCFOM (Coke) but when comparing it and watching with TWBB (Pepsi) most people seem to prefer TWBB it even was ranked higher on greatest films of the century list few years ago a list done by film critics around the world
Nominated for 9 Oscars including Best Picture but won for Best Actor Daniel Day Lewis and Best Cinematography.
It’s one “mistake” was being made in the same year as No Country For Old Men. It would’ve been a lock for Best Picture otherwise. For them to have been made at the same time, so close to one another that the flaming derrick scene caused production delays on the NCFOM set is amazing. Magic was being made in the hills of Marfa that summer.
Best Stanley Kubrick film Stanley Kubrick never made.
One of the best character study films ever made.
A masterclass in acting from Daniel Day-lewis! Paul Dano also putting on a clinic. Such a good movie, well deserving of all its accolades.
Edward L. Doheny of Fond du Lac, Wisconsin. The King of Oil in California and Mexico in 1914.
He was born in Fon du Lac, the son of an Irish gardener and day laborer and a school teacher from Newfoundland. In high school he was regarded by his teachers as the least likely to succeed. In real life he was one of the richest men ever to walk the streets of Los Angeles and a key figure in the Teapot Dome Scandal that brought down an American presidential administration. He was a key contributor to institutions all over California, the inspiration for Upton Sinclair's 1927 novel "Oil" and the man behind the character ”Daniel Plainview” in the Paul Thomas Anderson film There Will Be Blood. He started the oil boom in Los Angeles by single handedly drilling and rigging a 155 foot hole near downtown Los Angeles. The many oil wells scattered across the landscape of the City of Angels are one his legacies. The final scenes of the film take place in Doheny's famous 55 room Beverly Hills mansion, Greystone. The building, an often used location familiar to movie goers everywhere, has a tragic past. Doheny built it as a wedding gift for his son, Ned. At the time, it was the most expensive building ever built in California. Doheny had known deep poverty and was no stranger to tragedy, having previously lost a 7 year old daughter, Eileen to severe lung infection brought on by harsh living conditions. The death of his son Ned broke him.
"On February 16, 1929, four months after Ned Doheny, his wife Lucy and their five children moved into Greystone, Ned died in his bedroom in a murder-suicide with his secretary, Hugh Plunket. The official story indicated Plunket murdered Ned either because of a "nervous disorder" or inflamed with anger over not receiving a raise. Others point out that Ned's gun was the murder weapon and that Ned was not buried in a Catholic cemetery with the rest of his family, indicating that he had committed suicide. Both men were involved in the trial of Ned's father in the Teapot Dome scandal."
The man leading the investigation into the famous Teapot Dome scandal was Senator Robert M. La Follette of Wisconsin. Greystone Mansion is a public park and open to visitors. I'd like to thank Andy G., the man from the "dirty south" of Milwaukee, for this whole thing.
Paul Thomas Anderson’s other films are also incredible and worth watching. Especially Magnolia, Punch Drunk Love, Boogie Nights, and Phantom Thread.
Phantom thread is absolutely terrible... what r u talking about?😂
"Whatever they're looking for, I hope it's worth it."
Daniel Day Lewis is a maniac. The true GOAT.
The score/soundtrack of the movie was written by Johnny Greenwood from the (now) classic band Radiohead.
Not familiar with D Day-Lewis? Remedy that.
Excellent performance by Daniel Day Lewis. Just excellent. You should also check out Phantom Thread also starring Daniel Day Lewis and directed by his There Will Be Blood director Paul Thomas Anderson which is Daniel's last big screen performance before he announced his retirement from acting in 2017.
I _think_ you may have missed that the awkward “no more hitting” scene with Mary was intentional because he’s doing right in front of her father effectively telling _him_ he better not hit her anymore. It seemed like you were more thinking it was a tad bit of a creepy interaction with a little girl.
Daniel Day Lewis is the greatest actor of all time. And this is his crowning achievement.
This movie gets under my skin (in a good way). I can't even explain it. It's Eerie, fascinating, horrific, superb...
As of now this my favorite film of all time.
How it places you in that place abd times reminds me of why I love the work of Robert Eggers today specifically.
Dude, I got CHILLS when you started clapping at the end! We know how you feel though! And he's BRITISH!!! (so is the guy who plays his main assistant. Those Brits can pull off American accents, jeez!). Don't feel bad, MOST of us were confused about Paul Dano playing both parts of the twins. He was only supposed to do the small part in the beginning, but the other actor dropped out and he took over as Eli with only two days notice! Every time I see this movie, I just think "this poor guy is winging it, he's acting completely on instinct......and in a period piece! In a movie that he would have done tons of research for, like he would later do for stuff like "12 Years A Slave" or playing Brian Wilson in "Love And Mercy". The kid was fantastic. He pops up on You Tube sometimes, as a commenter! He's all grown up now, I hope he sees this reaction! He's a really cool dude. (So are you. GREAT reaction!!!)
Fantastic post-film analysis, wow. You got it spot on. Man, you are way more articulate than i ever could be, on camera, after a first watch. Great remarks.
As Mr. Burns once famously said "Family, religions, friendship. These are the three demons you must slay if you wish to succeed in business."
Masterpiece in film making.
It’s always surprises me when someone doesn’t know Daniel, he’s by far one of the greatest actors to ever lived
I love that last line. "I'm finished."
I know nowadays hes canceled, but this is one of Kanye West favourites movies (also mine), I just found it so interesting because I see so much of Kanye in Daniel Day-Lewis character.
I drink your reaction.
Yes!! I've been hoping you'd catch this! Incredible story, film, performances!
I DRINK YOUR MILKSHAKE
DRAAAAAAAAIINNNNNNNNNNNNAAAAAGGGGGEEEEEEEEEE
Don't bully me Daniel
It’s rare to see someone notice all the nuances on their first watch. Kudos. Smart man!
The father and son relationship change when the Son turn deaf. One of the sad part for me. Things would have been different. They would have been a happy family at the end.
"These... people"
I felt that in the theater. The way he has to force that word out like it hurts.
Yeah. I get it.
The disdain really drips from his voice when he says “people”.
Robert Elswit shot the shit out of this film. The lighting is a particular standout.
the shot of the burning oil derrick against that blue-black sky will stick with me forever.
@@jessharvell1022 the camera movement, those slow push ins and pull outs, the composition, the visual beauty on display here is immense.
@@reservoirdude92 one of the few movies from the past 20 years i saw in theaters multiple times just because it makes such perfect use of the big screen.
@Jess Harvell oh man, I WISH I could have seen it in theaters (the ONE theater in my city only showed it for a week and I wasn'tever able to go). One of my biggest regrets for sure 😞
Man you really do pick the best movies to watch! If you want more amazing DDL performances check out In the Name of the Father, The Boxer, Gangs of New York and the Last of the Mohicans. He's phenomenal
Excellent! Paul Thomas Anderson is one of my favorite writer/directors. This incredible character dynamic is also seen in his 2012 "The Master" with Philip Seymour Hoffman and Joaquin Phoenix. And Daniel Day Lewis is also a powerhouse in Scorcese's brutal "Gangs Of New York" (2002) and the exquisite period drama "The Age of Innocence" (1993)
So glad somebody finally reacted to this masterpiece, been recommending it to all my favorite reactors for probably 5 years
If this is your first Daniel Day Lewis film, you really should watch more asap. You will quickly realize that Daniel Day Lewis is not one of these actors that plays himself in his movies. Think about Anthony Hopkins, Robert Deniro, Al Pachino, Denzel, Tom Hanks....... these are all phenomenal actors. But you still pretty much know what you're going to get from them (in my opinion). Daniel Day Lewis was not Daniel Day Lewis in this movie at all. He was 100% Daniel Plainview. The mannerisms, the accent, the depth of his voice, the way his body moved in "There Will Be Blood", you will not see or hear in any of his other films. He completely transforms for each of his roles. The only other actor that I would put on the level of Daniel Day Lewis is Gary Oldman. Anyway, if you have not already seen them, I would highly recommend reacting to "Last of the Mohicans" and "Lincoln" as soon as you can. His performance in "Gangs of New York" is unbelievably good but Leonardo and Cameron Diaz ruined that movie in my opinion.
Funny story, but they had to pause shooting on No Country for Old Men when they did the oil burning scene from this movie, both movies were filming at the same time in the same area of W TX and you could see the huge plume of smoke from TWBB in all of the shots, so Roger Deakins & the Cohens had to pause filming.
Watch Gangs of New York for another stellar DDL performance
I just hope you realized that the kid wasn't his actual son. He really did "save" the baby when his father died in a drilling accident at the beginning
Incredible film, I’m intrigued to see your opinion of the performances of Paul Dano and Daniel Day-Lewis!
This film is a had watch. I had no idea what I was getting myself into when I saw it upon release. It was a life altering experience, cinematically speaking. It's one I would love to watch all the way through again, but it's such an intense experience...lol a brilliant film.
Whats funny is in that scene at 26:33 the kid was struggling not to piss himself laughing.
Awesome, a true masterpiece and my favorite film. It's astonishing.
My favorite movie. Eli uses people by pretending to be religious. Daniel uses everyone around him to make him rich including his "son". They both try to appear as one thing but are really another. And both are only looking to make money.
Eli says it in the end: "We are brothers"
And yes, they are legally in-laws since Eli's sister married Daniel's son but they are also brothers in crime, both deceieving the same poor people for their own greed and hunger for power.
Daniel day Lewis is one of the best working actors
One of my top 5 favorites. Such a unique movie on many levels.
Imo one of the greatest movies ever made, including ''In the Name of the Father'' with another incredible Daniel Day-Lewis performance, plus Pete Postlethwaite is almost equally as good like Day-Lewis, as is Paul Dano in ''There Will Be Blood''.
DDL is exceptional…. My favorite actor for sure. The whole Paul/Eli thing is weird (I had same experience as you), but really helps keep us on our toes…a cool creative choice!
Another great movie (with similar tone) to consider for review is The Master with Joaquin Phoenix…
Daniel Day Lewis never made a bad film!
Daniel day Lewis does an excellent job in the movie the Gangs of New York.
This is easily in my top 10 favourite movies of all time.
DRAAAAAAIIIIIIIINAGE!!!!!!
love this movie.
Great movies with Daniel Day-Lewis, is 'The Last of the Mohicans' ❤️ and 'Gangs of New York'
Daniel realized he couldn’t “win”. So all he had left was to make others lose.
The “competition” is fueled by self loathing
I love this movie
There was no way to tell his stepson he had to send him away. And he felt guilty about it. Thats why he threatened to kill the guy telling how to handle the kid.
Another way to consider it was something out of his control. Deep movie how one might interpret it in different ways.
At its core, this film is about the two most malevolent, corrupting forces in the modern world: religion and capitalism. Daniel and Eli are human avatars of those systems. Both seek to dominate their environment and only one can come out on top. Capitalism wins in the end, of course, but it's a hollow victory. Daniel will die miserable and alone. He's such an extreme embodiment of greed, sociopathy and sadism that he's incapable of connecting with other human beings and realizing that he's missing out on everything that makes life worth living.
Daniel day lewis is the man! Gotta check out gangs of new york next 💯
Thanks for another great reaction. Definitely check out the rest of Day Lewis’ performances and especially PT Anderson’s catalog of great films. Boogie Nights is one of my faves!
No country for old men and there will be blood where filmed in the exact same location at the same exact time and have the same exact vibe also there my two favorite films
The man the myth the legend DDL
The soundtrack is intense.
Jonny Greenwood is a god.
@@reservoirdude92 I think his Phantom Thread score is even better
@@sarahwhite4906 oh man, I have such a hard time with that, but I can certainly agree that House of Woodcock is one of the most unreasonably beautiful pieces of music that he's ever had a hand in, Radiohead included.
@@reservoirdude92 That's fair!
this was a great reaction with good insight im subscribing. thanks sir
Plainview is a monster. But he did care for his son. Thats the tragedy
classic film .DDL gave his best performance.
One of the greatest actors ever !
Danial day Lewis is a treasure. such an acting range, like no other. A Room With A View, Ganga Of New York, Lincoln, Last Of The Mohicans. Watch a few more of his movies. Really good stuff! 🙂
You are the Man Caped Informer!
Now watch Daniel Day Lewis on The Last of the Mohicans, you won’t believe it’s the same actor. I was so immersed in this character, I really think this film is his best.
If he granted one request the requests would have kept on coming.
I'm not saying Paul Dano carried this movie, but he sure made it better than if he wasn't in it. One of the great performances that is never talked about.
Alot of people are talking about Dano. But he dióes not compete with Day-Lewis here.
You gotta watch Lincoln.
DD Lewis is phenomenal in it.
Daniel Day-Lewis is one of the finest actors.
Daniel Day Lewis at his absolute best, great reaction.
Great movie but you can't compare it to No country for old man, they have completely distinctive style. Slow story here spanning over 20 years. Daniel Day Lewis also shines in Gangs of New-York (2002). I think H.W. was not his son (we see his real dad get killed at some point) but he kept him around for sympathy (good for business) as Daniel say at end of movie.
Great analysis.
Great film , thanks for the reaction
Daniel Plainview is goated
This is a good one! Should also check out Gangs of New York, if you're able.
Greatest actor ever!
This movie is perfect
You should definitely watch "In the Name of the Father".
Come ON! I watched this whole video to see how you’d react to “I drink your milkshake” and you skipped it!? That’s like reacting to Terminator 2 and skipping “I’ll be back”. Party foul.
I’ll still watch all your shit tho.
One Godamn hell of show.
Gangs of new York next!! He is amazing in that too! 👌❤️
You should watch 'The last of the Mohicans' and 'gangs of new york' Daniel Day-Lewis is amazing in them
