Lewis and Oldman are the best actors ever. They are chameleons. I looked into their filmography and realized that they played some of my favorite characters and I didn't even realize it was them!
I don't know what it is about Anderson films. I just never really feel them. The directing, filming, acting...all excellent. And I do like the little vignettes within the films, just not as a whole. I see the quality, yet they just don't resonate for me... I really want to see Licorice Pizza though... I may need to revisit these films.... I do have a good understanding on why Magnolia and Punch Drunk Love don't work for me... I like parts of them, just now the whole.... There will Be Blood is more confounding for me. On paper it should hit on all cylinders. I just...uhh...well I don't care about any of the characters... It's been a while I think I'll watch it again.....
Daniel Day-Lewis always remained in character. There’s a story about how Liam Neeson would work out at the gym early in the morning each day before filming. Day-Lewis arrived at the gym later and would greet him every day by saying, “Good Morning, Priest,” always with the full New-York accent.
It’s an interesting movie. “The blood stays on the blade” is a metaphor for one cannot wash away their sins-the wicked deeds you’ve caused will come back to haunt you as it has with Butcher Bill-and yet the city of New York is shown to forget everything entirely. The gangs of New York helped shaped the future, and that future abandoned them quicker than night turned to day.
This has been one of my favorite films since it came out purely for Daniel Day Lewis’ performance. He truly became Bill the butcher and absolutely steals every scene. It’s such a raw and gritty aesthetic with incredible writing and costumes. Just a fun film!
That whole neighborhood of Five Points is now a Park (Columbus Park), Chinatown and the NYC Court Houses. The gangs really did rule the streets...and the Draft Riots were insanely bloody. The last frame of the movie has the World Trade Center as part of the skyline.
I believe there was some controversy too, there were requests before the film released to remove the WTC from the skyline at the end, Scorcese wanted it kept in, rightfully so as it's an integral part of New York's history, same as the events depicted in the movie.
Every movie Daniel Day-Lewis acts in is AMAZING, he's a top tier actor! Some of my favourite movies of his are, "Last of the Mohican's", "In the name of the Father", "Lincoln", "The Crucible" & "There will be Blood", just to name a few.
17:51 The whole monologue about fear, “the spectacle of fearsome acts” from DDL, while wrapped in an American flag, is one of my favorite moments of a film. “Civilization is crumbling.”
I first watched this movie during my first semester of college as part of an assignment for my history course, I had to write an essay on its depiction of the New York riots and gang wars of the time. It turned out to be one of the movies that finally clicked something in my head and started me down a path of learning more about and appreciating cinema as an art form. This was the beginning for me.
The book (published in 1928) is worth reading too. It's more like an encyclopedia of the gangs at different points in the history of New York, so the story in the movie is original. The book provided the background.
Daniel Day is so good. He is like a sleeper for one of the best actors of our time. Every movie with him in it, I can vividly recall his role. Gangs is one of my favorite movies ever
Love the richness of the movie. Does make me think of my father's side who settled here in the 1860's, started a business. Many buried in the Brooklyn cemetery. Have a picture with one of them holding a rifle wearing a hat, like this movie 😊.
Shutter Island and Gangs of New York are two Scorsese/Leo movies that any reactor should watch. I love how much you appreciate shots and have to ask, wouldn't a Peaky Blinders film be so interesting under the direction of Martin Scorsese? What a collaboration that would be. Cillian's eyes telling as much of the story as Martin's direction. Great reaction Arianna
Daniel Day Lewis's character was based on the real life "William Poole" AKA "Bill The Butcher" (1821-1855), who was the leader of the Bowery Boys Gang and the "Know Nothing" political movement in NYC. He was also a part -time butcher, fireman, and bare -knuckles brawler/street fighter. He was assassinated by a rival gang leader in a bar. His last words were, "Well boys, I die a true American."
and Lincoln. Daniel-day Lewis is no joke. He retired now but he was very selective he was very selective in the roles he accepted. He would wait five years in-between projects for the right role. he is a hardcore method actor to the extreme and nobody has more best actor Oscars than he does even though he does way fewer films than most big name actors do. The guy is a generational talent.
You guys release this video when in staying in NYC for a week. A few weeks ago I was in Colorado Springs and I watched one of the videos the girls mentioned living I. Colorado Springs.
"Gangs Of New York" was such a very good book, a real page turner. And a wicked, killer film with a stellar cast, great storyline and superb acting. Your reactions all the way through it....very nice. Liking your style quite a lot. Your quick witted and very funny. Thank you for this glance back to a grand Hollywood picture. Enjoyed this one again. Thanks for bringing us along. Cannot wait for the next so I hit your sub button, black bell, and a thumbs up. And here's my little comment. Good luck with this channel. I think you got the stuff to make it a great success. Big shoutout from the mountains of Gatlinburg. That's in East Tennessee. Much Peace and lots of love to you and yours. Bless you. Go with God. Now folk will try to convince you that the next movie to see With Daniel Day Lewis should be The Last Of The Mohecans, or The Boxer, or My Left Foot... All fine movies. Better then fine to be truthful (LotM is a little schmaltzy, but enjoyable). But, if you are gonna watch something, check out The Unbearable Lightness Of Being. If I'm not mistaken the book was categorized as an "unfilmible" movie.... I don't know if it's worth reacting to, but it's worth seeing...
The true lesson from the end of this film: There is no gang more powerful, more ruthless, and more self-serving ... than the political class They will use whatever factions will advance their own agendas, drop them at a moment's notice if political winds change, and will willingly send them to the slaughter without a second thought (even the economic elite who thought themselves untouchable as well) And so long as they have the lower factions constantly at each other's throats, they will continue to sit high above and orchestrate everyone else's demise
Until the push comes to shove and the "low" rise up and consume them, as they do in this flick. They literally drag them form their homes. unless I'm misremembering. Great Movie!

Good analysis. I think that final montage is meant to be a tragic image, certainly from the perspective of men like Bill and Amsterdam: the caldera of tribes and ideas that was old New York has finally resolved into something concrete, where the men on top will ALWAYS be the men on top. They didn't get there through bloodshed or any honorable means, but simply by changing with the wind. Bill had convictions, and he was destroyed for them.
Daniel Day Lewis one of the best actors when it comes to range
Lewis and Oldman are the best actors ever. They are chameleons. I looked into their filmography and realized that they played some of my favorite characters and I didn't even realize it was them!
Bill the Butcher is easily one of the best villains on screen. Competent, brutal, but compassionate in his own way.
Bill the butcher is not A villain he’s an antihero
Villain? He was the hero.
Ahhhh.......Daniel Day Lewis🤤No one can touch this guy's talent!!
100% agree he is leagues above other actors
We gotta get these ladies hittin’ the “There Will Be Blood” now.
How they haven't watched it at this point is WILD!
SERIOUSLY. Tbh I’d love to see their takes on all Paul Thomas Anderson films
Who will drink their milkshake?

Don't feel bad about not recognizing Daniel Day Lewis, thats actually just how good of an actor he is.
Daniel Day-Lewis doesn't merely portray characters. He literally becomes them.

This is actually my favorite of all Martin Scorsese’s films and one of my favorite films period. Most of that is because of Daniel Day-Lewis.
24:07 ..."California... Will you come with me?"... Hell, no, is filled with hipsters...
man, I dunno what it is about the opening theme with that strangled flute, but I love its inconsistency
I was around during the 1800s and this movie is pretty accurate.

Going "ham" with the cleaver. Good one.
This is one of my favorite movies of all time. Daniel Day Lewis makes the best "villain"...
Daniel Day Lewis would be up at night throwing knives outside his trailer since he never dropped character. He scared the shit out of DiCaprio.
The way the bigger issues in the city just wiped away what the gangs were fighting over...

“Enthusiastic corruption of the public good” was my nickname in high school.
Arianna, the fight between Priest Vallon's army and Bill's army at the beginning of the film was in 1846.

Hanging for "enthusiastic corruption", i feel like we should have this for politicians 😅
I can see Arianna living in this version of NYC. "Arianna's here to settle for good'n all, who holds sway over the 5 pints!"
Daniel Day Lewis is next level. Hope you'll check out There Will Be Blood at some point. It's another 1800s film with Lewis as leading actor.

Speaking of New York, watch Escape from New York (Kurt Russell).

Fantastic movie!! DDL kills it as always.
The parting shot of the Trade Centers still hurts 💔😭😭😭😭
GREAT flick and an excellent reaction! It was a very well written story, acted out by a great cast.
I almost forgot how great this film is, it's been so long since I've seen it
This movie always makes me want to grow my moustache back.
I saw this movie young and the scene with butcher wrapped in the American flag stuck with me. That was some unbelievable acting

If you like this movie I would suggest watching a show called Vineland Saga. I could see alot of similarities between the two.
