"The way I want Mark Wahlberg to show up outta nowhere and arrest him."
You'll get that and then some, Arianna lol
Spoiler
I actually prefer the hypothetical ending where Sullivan doesn't get killed. He just gets away with it. He just packs up and moves into a smaller apartment. Leaves the movie more dramatic and uneasy.
I think what happens to sullivan in the end doesn't matter. The whole situation is already FUBAR.
@@thedarkemissarylet’s just be thankful you didn’t write it, because that would’ve been dog shit.
One of my favorite movies for sure. When Arianna said "The way I want Mark Wahlberg to show up outta nowhere and arrest this dude.", I had the biggest smile on my face lol
same dude lmao
Honestly everyone's great but Mark Wahlberg is the protagonist of this movie in my head haha.
@@jerodast”I’m the guy who does his jawb. You must be the otha guy.”
I always enjoy Maple's cry of "Arianna" when something upsetting happens, as if she expects her to fix it somehow.
Jack Nicholson had to remind some ppl he still had it
If I really think about, Easy Rider, Shining, and this are probably the only roles of his that I enjoy.
No he didn't. (and in fact, I don't think much of this performance at all, it was a total disappointment to me, and I had way higher expectations from both him and the movie). He had just done "About Schmidt" four years earlier, one of his best and most underrated performances, his last Oscar nomination if I remember rightly, and then he followed it up with a hit comedy, "Anger Management"......then he does this a couple of years later. You think people forgot Jack Nicholson was? He was also really great in a romantic comedy he did with Diane Keaton around this time, I can't remember the name, but that's the last really good Jack performance, although this one does have his indisputably last, decisively iconic line reading......"I"ve got this rat, this TEETHING, gnawing rat...." That's up there with "Here's Johnny" and the Carnal Knowledge monologue and all the rest of it.
@@TTM9691Yeah well, you know, that's just like your opinion, man
@@nickinskeepalways love using this line. There was a lot coke involved in this performance
@@TTM9691 I go back and forth on his performance in this film. I think tonally it's kinda strange but there are some subtle moments that rock. His opening monologue for example works and doesn't work for me.
The guy that shot Billy (Leo) is an underrated actor. You saw him in "The Pacific" he's also in a film called "13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi" it's worth a watch.
Holy crap, I never made that connection and I've seen both this movie and The Pacific a dozen times. Thanks!
@@dudermcdudeface3674 No problem!!
James Badge Dale.
He's been in a few things over the years, plays pretty good bad and good guys. I like seeing him play such a nerdy good guy in Spectral and then an evil scumbag in Ironman 3.
@@ThePartisan13 He's kinda like Sean Bean he dies in (mostly) everything he's in lol.
“I’ve just never heard people talk like this before” Girl, me either til I moved to Boston 😅
Once a black coworker asked me what I thought about Joe Rogan saying the N word.
I just replied:
"Well... he's from Boston..."
Arianna and Maple have really found a groove the last few months with their chemistry. It was a bit rough at first which is to be expected as sometimes they'd talk over each other but it's so amazing now!!!
One of my Top 50 movies. Love The Departed. Such great performances.
I absolutely LOVE the tone of violence in Scorsese's movies. It feels cinematic while feeling real, it feels serious while maybe even being a tad funny (in some moments, not always). It is often clumsy, in the way that real violence usually is, and that just adds to the *impact*. And Schoonmaker's editing just adds to it even more.
The editing in this is so brilliant. Thelma's one of the greats.
Also, the Coens are masters at portraying violence as well.
Black Mass is great too, about Whitey Bulger's gang, Nicholson's character was based on Bulger.
38:06 still the most tense scene involving a cell phone of all time… and it’s a flip phone
Delahunt didn't say who the rat was because he didn't want Billy killed. He couldn't kill anyone, it just wasn't in him. It's more explained in a deleted scene but Scorsese wanted to leave it ambiguous. There's a RUclips vid of the full clip and Scorsese saying as much.
One of the best ever. There isn't a bad part of the whole thing. I normally am not a huge fan of Wahlberg, but his delivery of "I'm a guy who does his job, you must be the other guy" has been a personal motivator in my work for almost 20 years now.
"I thought that was his ass! Hhhhhhhhhhhhhh......." 🤣
His character was an asshole 😂
So Maple, at the 23:11, the way they get those two shots in focus at the same time is they use a lense on the camera that does a front focus and a back focus where you can keep the up close shot focused in while keeping the background in focus as well. They use them a lot in Live Event Productions, that’s where I learned it!
Commonly known as a 'split diopter shot'
One of my favorite movies of all time. Your reaction to "that scene" did not disappoint! 🤣 Great one guys!
"Why'd she just yank the dog away like that?"
"Because he's got murder vibes."
🤣😭😭💀
She pulled the dog away because the little old ladies know his pregnant fiancé moved out.
I loved how the girls were craving a romance scene so hilarious haha but i love how they got so into the story also. This movie is freaking awesome.
"I've never heard people talk like this before."
WELCOME TO EVERYDAY IN BOSTON
The Departed is an American adaptation of the Chinese/Hong Kong film "Infernal Affairs" which had a few sequels. Both are great in their own rights.
Hong Kong film.
What's really crazy is that a lot of this also actually happened, and the real story is batshit. If you lived anywhere near Boston in the early 2000s, you might've heard the name Whitey Bulger. He was an Irish crime boss with a brother in the state senate. He also had an old friend from the neighborhood as his FBI handler. In exchange for information about the mafia, Whitey's biggest competition, his handler officially provided him with FBI protection from prosecution as a federal informant, and unofficially provided him with sealed information on other gangs so he could corner pretty much every illegal market in Boston. He operated with impunity for over 30 years, and he was RUTHLESS.
Never noticed but Vera Farmiga is holding a banana when she's reassuring Matt Damon that "it happens to all guys".
There's a lot of symbolism used in The Departed.
"90s office siren vibe" as soon as you said that I saw Ally McBeal in her - you nailed it.
James Badge Dale was great in the show Rubicon. I wish that show had more seasons.
I have interpreted the film that since Matt Damon's character is impotent; the baby is actually Leo's. Seems like justice to me!
Not really an "interpretation" as it's just what happens in the movie.
@@thedarkemissary I think the more interesting question involves what Sullivan thinks about that, since he presumably knows that the baby can't be his.
@@adamwells9352 He doesn't appear too hurt by her leaving with his child. I assume he simply dismisses her cheating by virtue of expecting the worst from everyone as a projection.
@@thedarkemissary I like the take. I feel like he might also be showing that he's willing to use the baby to manipulate her to stay (for the sake of his respectability) maybe assuming she also values that. When I start to think that maybe he suspects it's Costigan's, I get confused. But in a good way.
infernal affairs : The film was selected as the Hong Kong entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 76th Academy Awards but was not nominated. Martin Scorsese remade the film in 2006 as The Departed, which won the Academy Award for Best Picture .infernal affairs was nominated for sixteen awards during the 22nd Hong Kong Film Awards, winning seven of those categories. It also won the Best Picture at the 40th Golden Horse Awards, the 8th Golden Bauhinia Awards, and the Best Foreign Language Film at the 46th Blue Ribbon Awards.
I’d highly recommend watching Infernal Affairs, the Cantonese film The Departed was based on. It has the same basic structure, but the tone, style, and thematic conclusions are extremely different. Incredible film in its own right. The Departed is one of my favorite films ever, but I’d have to give it a rewatch to see which one I truly prefer.
the original hong kong version had sequels, but the ending was different so a sequel worked. It wouldnt make sense to have a sequel to the scorsese departed
I am sure your state police are doing that. You think of them as highway patrol and ticket writers because that is what is at the forefront and most newly graduated troopers have to serve in patrol for the first few years of their career. State police agencies always have some specialized divisions. Detectives, task forces, gang units, counter terrorism and swat teams.
21:17 😂 “can I talk to you for a second please?” 😂
What if, when the credits rolled, "Good Vibrations" song by Marky Mark started? That would have upped the caliber of this movie to platinum if you ask me.
Baldwin and Wahlberger in this are my favorite cussers in all of movie history
Black Mass is an interesting movie to watch because its about Whitey Bulger who is the inspiration for the character of Frank Costello and stars Johnny Depp. This movie is basically a remake of the Hong Kong film Infernal Affairs.
47:56 is a movie theater experience I'll never forget
You may have recognized James Badge Dale from playing the role of Robert 'Peaches' Leckie in 'The Pacific'.
Arianna bringing up "spades" of all things 😆How could I love her any more than I already do? That is a game of my generation, and I know she's not my age! 💛
So that final 15-20 minutes of the movie were absolutely insane lol. Matt Damon's character shoots his partner because at the moment he thought that was the only one left alive that knew what he really was and he was trying to get out from under the paranoia of the trouble he was looking at. He just didn't believe ol girl had more info on him than the recordings she heard, and he had no clue she had instructions to go find dignam. Dignam had quit the police force so he couldn't actually arrest Sullivan, plus he wanted that man dead cause he was responsible for the captain dying so that's why he shot him at the very end.
Leo DiCaprio and director Martin Scorcese preceded this with Gangs of New York. I also recommend watching American Gangster and The Sopranos. For a more comedic performance by Jack Nicholson, I recommend watching Anger Management
2:31 "that's someone too, right?" -Arianna
they're all someone. 🙂
Great reaction! Glad you both enjoyed the Departed. Film that stands over time.
“LIFE IMITATES ARTTT!!!” lmao great reaction
Whoa, I learned something today about camera work. (Split Diopter method at 23:19)
47:41 _"Why is Matt Damon always the bad guy?"_
He's not. He's very rarely the bad guy.
Lol, wanted to say exactly that. Up to that movie he mostly played the hero or at least the righteous guy.
The Departed, Interstellar, and EuroTrip. I dunno man, seems like a pattern!
@@jerodast As opposed to movies where he's not the bad guy:
the martian, good will hunting, saving private ryan, ford v ferrari, true grit, the talented mr. ripley, the bourne identity, the bourne supremacy, the bourne ultimatum, oppenheimer, rounders, invictus, the informant, the rainmaker, bagger vance, ocean's eleven, ocean's twelve, ocean's thirteen, syriana, the brothers grimm, green zone, hereafter, contagion, we bought a zoo, the adjustment bureau, behind the candelabra, elysium, jason bourne, the great wall, the monuments men, downsizing, still water, air, the last duel, promised land etc.
Yea, he's rarely the bad guy.
All I know is there were two movies about six months apart where Matt Damon played a man trapped in space.
@@rustincohle2135thank you lol
One interpretation is that Sullivan is gay (and closeted, obviously). This would explain his impotence, the assumptions of the real estate guy, and some of his awkwardness "locker room talking" with the other cops. It also casts a different light on Frank meeting him in the porno theater (is Frank aware?), and adds still another level of deception about identity.
I think Frank is aware because when he asks "Do others know about me?" "I know about you" I think that was also a double meaning.
@@watisapples I don't understand why there's this need to project projection. ...There _is_ evidence--at least as much as there is to suggest that his impotence is a product of his stress. Not that it much matters, because the point here was just to suggest one possible way to examine the situation. There is no right answer. Or, rather, the right answer is up to the particular viewer.
Great movie and so true. Every person I have known who went into crime paid a very heavy price. It's just not worth it. At all. Great reaction ladies.
'twins...where have you been?' LOL
Oh, what’s his name? I know him. I know him too. I didn’t know …wait who is…it’s going to drive me crazy if I can’t remember his name. Alex Baldwin! Meanwhile there is dialogue going on, but hey, we’re watching movies so we can pick out the guy who played the president in TV show.
My ADHD won that round 💁🏽♀️ It’s a common thing. Also, we have subtitles for a reason…..
@@ariannaw6858yeah, I've noticed even when you two are talking you rarely miss a beat. Anyone who has or has a partner with ADHD will get it. My wife and I are pausing movies constantly to talk lol.
It was the beginning of the movie its not like they missed anything substantial
The comment about the bad screenplay shows they don’t know the real life story of Whitey Bulger whose role was played by Jack with names changed of course. Scorcese took the original film Infernal Affairs and superimposed over the Gang world in Boston making relevant changes and developing the interwoven storylines. It’s actually a brilliantly done adaptation and excellent screenplay.
The Departed is essentially a remake of an Asian movie called Infernal Affairs 🔥
What an amazing movie. I was stunned when leo got shot, it literally came out of nowhere.
Such a fun and wholesome movie! Can't wait to watch the reaction.
You should really check out Mat Damon’s performance in Team America.😉
2:30 he’s from the Pacific.
Delahunt was the creepo bad guy in Shawshank and he was also in Rush Hour and Aliens.
You two are more fun to watch than the movie!
Yep, actors are in other things too. Wild, right?
"What about the baby?" - It wasn't his baby, but Costigans. The movie also alluded to Damons character possibly being gay. Several comments about issues in the bed were brought up (ED) etc.
the departed is the remake of "infernal affairs" a hong kong movie starring tony leung (shang chi)
"office siren" is such a specific but great word to use lol
Was waiting on the edge of my seat to see y’all react to that elevator scene, y’all didn’t disappoint 😂😂
50:16 *Marky Mark's You Gotta Believe starts playing*
This is Scorsese's best film, and personally, i think it's the best crime drama film EVER made. The dialogue and script, the pacing, the acting, the screenplay. It is literally a perfect film.
It's not as good as Goodfellas or Casino imo, and I do think that Infernal Affairs is better, but this is probably the best american remake of a foreign film.
Its actually based on the movie Infernal Affairs, which went on to develop its own trilogy 👍
I much prefer the original Hong Kong film, but this is an exceptional movie for being a remake. I'm not sure if I'd say it's anywhere close to being my favorite Scorcese movie tho... Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, Goodfellas,. He's got a a lot of great ones.
Actually, the movie is more than just a re-make. The villian was loosely based on real life Irish-American mob leader Whitey Bulger. Like the character, he was both an FBI informant, as well as the brother of President of the Massachusetts Senate. At the time of the movie's release, Bulger was on the run.
We all love a good departed video
Alec Baldwin was so damn funny in this movie
This is beat for beat from the Hong Kong movie Infernal Affairs, except in that there is no Dignam character and Damon's character gets away at the end. Infernal Affairs is a trilogy. Which is good going as everyone but one is dead. Infernal Affairs 2 is a prequel and is one of the best films I have seen and 3 is a sequel. Worth the watch !
Infernal Affairs came up with the structure, but it's not even in the same galaxy of achievement as this. I don't remember a single thing about those characters. Can't forget any of these ones. And the script, good lord.
@@dudermcdudeface3674 Yeah, de gustibus non disputandum est, and no disrespect to those who prefer Infernal Affairs, but I find the argument that the Departed is a copy or in any way inferior to be at a minimum overblown.
It's been a minute since I've watched this movie how did Mark Wahlberg know Damon was the rat
Goooooood question lol
Probably from whatever was in the envelope Costigan gave Madolyn.
After thinking about it he probably just killed him for getting Martin Sheen killed
@@DiegesisIn the original movie, Infernal Affairs, the protagonist recognised something he had written earlier. I won't give it away if you do go to watch it but that's when he figured out which cop was the mole.
That happens in this too. The citizens check. But he wasn't asking about the protagonist. That was leo. He was asking about a side character played by Mark Walberg. And I don't know how he figured it out.
I’m still emotionally recovering from Leo’s death
Calm down. Just a film.
Arianna was so freaked out by the final elevator scene that her hand distorted space and time!
The lady who went on a date with the pinstripe suit is Vera that comes out from the conjuring and those haunting movies lol
L.A confidential is one of a kind that inspired this movie!
L.A Confidential
57:08 a really AROUSING game of spades???
it's a shame that not many people know that this is based on 'Infernal Affairs' (HK, 2002)
Yea Infernal Affairs is a movie worth watching as well
Seeing as how half of the comments are about that, apparently a lot of people know.
You girls should watch "Lion" with Dev Patel
Apparently, it's our consumption of social media that is affecting our short term memories.
The other guy with Matt Damon was from the Pacific and he was a villain in Iron Man 3.
This is not a martin scorsese original it is a remake to a Japanese movie called infernal affairs which is a trilogy part 1 is the departed part 2 is after the departed and part 3 is a prequel about when leo's uncle jacky ran the mob and matt killed his partner so he could give the department the rat they been looking for, and they didnt do the departed sequel because they messed up and killed matt damon character
23:31 Lovely song, all-time classic!
Cranberry juice is good for UTIs idk about periods
This movie is singlehandedly responsible for the anxiety I get whenever I'm getting on or off an elevator to this day.
I love how surprised they are that big names showing up, in a Martin Scorsese film. LOL
The Departed is actually based on one of my favourite Hong Kong movies of all time, 'Infernal Affairs,' featuring actor Andy Lau, and has its own trilogy. The Departed is a great riff on that movie. It might be worth doing a reaction on that too, I think the character dynamic in the original was better 👍
Dingnam stood on business.
The violence feels real in this. There's no hollywood musical leadup, it just hits.
Cops giving tickets on 81? Where these people from? I’ve gotten a couple myself lol
Loosely based on the Bulger story who was the corrupt mobster in Massachusetts and was also a rat to the FBI. And he was missing for years because I believe the FBI was protecting him because he was so valuable as an informant.
26:14 out n in, in n out. Whatever works😂
I have theory that Costello was never going to give up Sullivan to the fbi and was probably going to give up Barrigan (the other guy)
Except it seems like Barrigan knew Sullivan was also Costello's guy. If that was the case he can't give Barrigan up without giving up Sullivan.
