The movie isn't really based on the book Oil!. It's a completely original story written by Paul Thomas Anderson, it's just that he credited it for the inspiration. As I said, almost all of Paul Thomas Anderson's films from Boogie Nights on could be considered some of the best movies of the past 30 years.
This film is one of the greatest character studies ever made. Daniel Plainview is complex, brutal and somehow relatable all at the same time. Daniel Day Lewis was the perfect guy to play him. Probably the only guy who could play him.

They were filmed so close to each other that production on No Country for Old Men had to be paused for the smoke generated from the oil well fire in There Will Be Blood.

This has to be one of the most brilliant acting performances ever in a movie, It should come as no surprise that he did win. Best actor for this movie, Daniel, Day Lewis is incredible. I wish he still made movies but he is retired, He was also great in Lincoln
Sort of an ugly study of our industrial roots and the people who developed and tended them. A beautifully designed and produced film. The characters are well drawn and profoundly well acted. It’s basically an artifact of older “Hollywood”, but raised to a level that seldom existed under their older conventions. I think it’s a modern classic.
You guys should check out Daniel Day Lewis' first best actor Oscar win in My Left Foot, he kept in character off set as a guy with severe Cerebral palsy for months. It's a great Irish comedy drama based on a true story.

I watched No Country in the theater, went out to the ticket booth & went back in to watch There Will Be Blood right after. For another solid American historical piece with Daniel in probably his first big role I'd recommend a watch of The Last of the Mohicans. Directed by the guy who did HEAT

So I think that for all of Daniel's flaws and faults, he did love H. W. That's what makes their last interaction hurt so much is because he felt like H. W. was betraying him by abandoning him, and reminding him of Daniel's greatest shame (abandoning H. W. in the first place when he got duped by Henry). And Daniel has no other children and no other hope for an heir, and seeing H. W. reject that to do his own thing is tantamount to spitting in Daniel's face for all the sacrifices and blood spilled. A lot of people take their final scene as proof that Daniel never loved H. W., but I think the flashback we get of Daniel and H. W. with the hat is proof that he did.
No.. Daniel Plainview sacrificed everything he had for everything he wanted.. and he got it... there was never any love lost for anyone because he accomplished his true goal.. the question is, in the final scene.. was it worth it?
@@HD00957 I think that doesn't invalidate Daniel's love for H. W., at least at the outset. It's just that he became so crabbed and bitter over time that what affections he had dried up. He clearly didn't spend a lot of time learning to speak in ASL, for instance, but I think the interactions with H. W. when he was a boy were genuine. But everything surrounding H. W.'s injury, coupled with how he replaced him with Henry only to get tricked by an imposter, forced Daniel to close inward on himself and not to let anyone else close. It should be noted that Daniel also had a close business associate, Fletcher Hamilton (Ciaran Hinds's character), who is also being sidelined when Henry enters the picture, and we never see what happens to that relationship. One of the reasons I think Daniel pursues that goal of absolute solitude is because of that great shame and humiliation of abandoning his son, and everything after that was a coping mechanism to justify it.

@@HD00957 I think that was an added bonus but Daniel clearly wanted to do right by the kid by adopting him in the first place. And in their interactions together, he was molding him as his natural successor before the derrick fire. He was part of the negotiations, he was involved in the day-to-day administration of the company. You can say it was "all business" but I don't think it was without love. Even Paul Thomas Anderson has said in interviews and in a Reddit AMA after the fact that Plainview loved his son. So take that as you will.

This is the first film that was classified 12a(suitable for persons under the age of 12 if they’re accompanied by an adult, pretty much a PG13) by the BBFC(British Board of Film Classification) which was appealed to get a higher rating(15) hadn’t been done before… not sure it’s been done since, but it’s a nice little factoid.

I think he cared about him, as much as he could care about anyone. But winning at oil was more important to him than anything else. He was so mad because he felt like HW was betraying him by leaving, even though he abandoned him first. Daniel is a warning to set the right priorities in life. He gets exactly what he wanted and is more miserable than ever.

Daniel-day Lewis is the main actor. If you like him you guys should check out Gangs of New York where he plays Bill the Butcher. One of the greatest performances I've ever seen.
In my humble opionion, DDL is the actual GOAT. Every performance he delivers resonates for years to follow. Him in Gangs of New York was the first time in my life I appreciated a performance for the actual talent of acting, and not sheer star power. There are many greats, but I can't think of someone who transforms into a character with as much nuance and precision as he does
The explosion from the dynamite instantly deprives the fire of oxygen and puts it out. Then you can go back to pumping it. They still occasionally find little stashes and crates of dynamite in collapsed shacks and so forth, out in the middle of land nobody's really walked on in a long time. Dynamite degrades over time, and it sweats nitroglycerin, and you can set them stuff with a hard stare. It's crazy dangerous. Source: I used to work in an oilfield-connected shop and eat lunch in a restaurant in Corpus Christi, TX that was decorated with photos of oilfield fires. They all had little nameplates under them, with the name of the fire, or the well, and the date.

This movie reminds me of Napoleon Dynamite. Weird comparison, I know. First time I saw it, the whole time I'm watching it, I'm just asking, what the heck am I watching? But I can't stop watching. Then it's over, and your like, ok, that was good, but... what?? But every time it's on, you just stop what your doing and watch it again. Basically, just a character study, and all the characters are just so interesting in their own ways. Every character is just so captivating. Hard to explain. Another great reaction fellas, thank you.
Absolute masterpiece, PTA has made a bunch of bangers but this might be my favorite from his catalogue. The unsettling score, the vintage glass used for some cool organic feeling cinematography, the performances from everyone and the two leads especially. DDL might just be the GOAT, but Dano really held his own in their scenes together. One of those movies that just flies by because it's so engrossing, I've watched 90min films that feel longer than this.. A study in ambition, emotional solitude, bitterness, pettiness and wearing masks to hide your true character.
this was more like a battle for control between capitalism and religion, with capitalism reigning victorious as we can see in the 20th to 21st century.
Absolutely brilliant performance by Lewis. Really enjoy your commentary. Another great slow-burn character driven film to check out is Glengarry Glenn Ross, Al Pachino, Ed Harris, Kevin Spacey, Jack Lemmon, Alec Baldwin, etc.
I actually live in the area this movie is set. No little Boston doesn’t exist, but it is basically kern county and the surround area of ca. we sit on top of the third largest oil reserve in the USA. Bandy would’ve lived in the Tehachapi mountains for example. Little Boston is probably around modern day Taft or Bakersfield even. A lot of the names he mentions are actual families from around the area who moved out here to drill for oil or start other businesses. One family surname in particular, I knew well. I went to school with that family in a small private school here in my city. They were absolutely loaded. Huge main mansion sitting on a large ranch estate, with multiple other buildings on the main estate and owns all the land around it so it is totally private. I’ve been in the main house once it is 1000% that old money, solid mahogany imperial staircase with a rotunda on top overlooking the foyer, giant floor to ceiling built in bookshelves. Bowling alley built in the early 1900s, movie theater, indoor pool, four outdoor pools on the estate. Tennis court, 9 hole golf course, a small lake. Horses and stables. They have a private airplane hanger at our local airport have two jets in there and a few old biplanes and some old cars stored there (like old model T fords and what not that have been restored) they have a few super cars on the main estate and an helicopter to get to the airport. It was crazy. From what I know they arrived here in about 1910 and started drilling for oil here, and a lot of their wells like other individual drillers were bought out chevron and some other local companies that ended up being bought by other local companies or regional / national/ international companies. Some families stayed very involved or cut deals where they run the stores attached to the gas stations locally, which is an empire all its own. There was about ten families that went to my school that were on similar levels of wealth, being involved in real estate pivoting from petroleum business, still being in the petroleum business. Lots were in the agriculture world as well. One family was one of the most powerful ranching families and land owners in CA at one point in time, and controlled a good amount of what happened with CAs water, which is also why nowadays Ca water situation is so messed up, generations old squabble between a few powerful land owners who were fighting to get water to their own personal projects and business empires. Really cool to see how these families started and completely changed the face of the nation and are responsible for building the whole region up from nothing. Dragged society kicking and screaming into the modern age thru sheer will, work ethic, as well as blood sweat and tears. Also crazy to see cause these few families, even as wealthy as they are, are nothing compared to the huge names like Rockefellers or Mellons or Carnegies at the same time in history. Which makes it almost impossible to think about how rich those people are.
25:55 this is what is called a blowout. Which is the uncontrolled flow/ eruption of natural gas trapped in the rock / in the same space as the oil. It shoots up the gas and oil out of the annular space (which is the negative space left by the drill bit. Nowadays they try to mitigate this by pumping pressurized “mud” which is basically like wet oilly cement slurry type stuff that is very sticky to itself, high surface tension. So usually the gas cannot escape the rock and stays trapped in it. Blowouts are extremely dangerous because it quickly sprays oil and gas all over. Usually before this happens when gas is found in the annular space bubbling thru the mud, it gets directed into a burn off valve where it is ejected into the air and burned off in order to prevent the pressure in the mud tanks and the drill hole from building up too high. The moment the drill hole becomes unbalanced and the gas becomes higher pressure than the mud, the gas will shoot out and push all the mud on top of it out of the hole along with lots of oil that was set to flow up to the line. Those gas overflow burn off lines can ignite the huge cloud of natural gas and the aerosolized oil flying around the air and covering every surface. Because of the fine particulate of the oil suspended in the air and the natural gas diffusing into the surround atmosphere, it becomes like an air bomb. It creates an extremely powerful explosion and shockwave. The fire can stick around floating in the air for a few seconds even. There was a significant blow out in Oklahoma a few years ago. You can find a CSB video on it here on RUclips that explains it very well. Something very similar happened in the BP deep water horizon disaster.
A modern masterpiece, and the best acting perfomance I've ever seen in my life from DDL. You need to rewatch it like 2-3 times to really digest everything that makes it so damn good
When they put out the well fire with dynamite, they weren't sealing the hole...When the dynamite explodes, the explosion creates a vacuum where there's no air at the center of the explosion. It only lasts a second, but it's enough to cut off the oxygen to the fire, which snuffs it out. They still use this method on oil well fires to this day.

Yo, Daniel Plainview is one of my favorite characters in the history of cinema. He's just strangely fascinating. Even though he's this petty, miserable asshole, for no apparent reason, he's aware of it and always stood on business. Plus the way he would speak and carry himself was just funny to me....I gotta say though, it's been disturbing to see how many people are slow to put together that Paul and Eli were twins 😂 Bralik, you're definitely not the first, but it's wild to me that that's not the first assumption. Formal, you had it and then were convinced otherwise smh. Then when it was really made clear, Bralik was all shocked like it was too unlikely to believe. But why? Paul said he had a brother named Eli, they meet dude and he looks just like him, what else could it be? Why would he start acting like a different person and like they never met before? 😂😂😂 Still a great reaction, always a pleasure.
Ive been refining oil for 42 years....the first 12 was spent fighting oil fires.....I was never on a well fire....oil tanks and trains.....its a hard way to make a living....but rewarding $$$

This is a wild movie. Had no idea what to expect when I first saw it. Had no idea where it was going. Had no idea what the point was. But it's highly memorable. Many theatrical scenes, not necessarily in the cinematic sense, but in the sense of a big stage play. Strong dialogue. Strong performances. Heavy concepts about family, loyalty, honesty, and of course greed.
'There Will Be Blood' is the title foreshadowing the end. It starts with Daniel alone. Why does he do this by himself? Daniel is a sociopath. Nobody knows more than he does. Nobody does it better than he does. So is Eli. Neither of these characters actually care about anything other than how it will benefit themselves. The battle for 'who is right' between Eli and Daniel continues all through the movie as each win their little victories over the other. Only one can win and be the better of the two. The title is just letting you know the natural outcome when two sociopaths get into a serious competition. Neither of these two men have any good in themselves.
It wasn't a secret that HW wasn't his son. We see his father get killed.

I think he cared about him, as much as he could care about anyone. But winning at oil was more important to him than anything else. He was so mad because he felt like HW was betraying him by leaving, even though he abandoned him first. Daniel is a warning to set the right priorities in life. He gets exactly what he wanted and is more miserable than ever.

Daniel-day Lewis is the main actor. If you like him you guys should check out Gangs of New York where he plays Bill the Butcher. One of the greatest performances I've ever seen.

In my humble opionion, DDL is the actual GOAT. Every performance he delivers resonates for years to follow. Him in Gangs of New York was the first time in my life I appreciated a performance for the actual talent of acting, and not sheer star power. There are many greats, but I can't think of someone who transforms into a character with as much nuance and precision as he does

The explosion from the dynamite instantly deprives the fire of oxygen and puts it out. Then you can go back to pumping it.
They still occasionally find little stashes and crates of dynamite in collapsed shacks and so forth, out in the middle of land nobody's really walked on in a long time. Dynamite degrades over time, and it sweats nitroglycerin, and you can set them stuff with a hard stare. It's crazy dangerous.
Source: I used to work in an oilfield-connected shop and eat lunch in a restaurant in Corpus Christi, TX that was decorated with photos of oilfield fires. They all had little nameplates under them, with the name of the fire, or the well, and the date.

This movie reminds me of Napoleon Dynamite. Weird comparison, I know. First time I saw it, the whole time I'm watching it, I'm just asking, what the heck am I watching? But I can't stop watching. Then it's over, and your like, ok, that was good, but... what?? But every time it's on, you just stop what your doing and watch it again. Basically, just a character study, and all the characters are just so interesting in their own ways. Every character is just so captivating. Hard to explain. Another great reaction fellas, thank you.
Absolute masterpiece, PTA has made a bunch of bangers but this might be my favorite from his catalogue. The unsettling score, the vintage glass used for some cool organic feeling cinematography, the performances from everyone and the two leads especially. DDL might just be the GOAT, but Dano really held his own in their scenes together. One of those movies that just flies by because it's so engrossing, I've watched 90min films that feel longer than this..

I actually live in the area this movie is set. No little Boston doesn’t exist, but it is basically kern county and the surround area of ca. we sit on top of the third largest oil reserve in the USA. Bandy would’ve lived in the Tehachapi mountains for example. Little Boston is probably around modern day Taft or Bakersfield even.
A lot of the names he mentions are actual families from around the area who moved out here to drill for oil or start other businesses. One family surname in particular, I knew well. I went to school with that family in a small private school here in my city. They were absolutely loaded. Huge main mansion sitting on a large ranch estate, with multiple other buildings on the main estate and owns all the land around it so it is totally private. I’ve been in the main house once it is 1000% that old money, solid mahogany imperial staircase with a rotunda on top overlooking the foyer, giant floor to ceiling built in bookshelves. Bowling alley built in the early 1900s, movie theater, indoor pool, four outdoor pools on the estate. Tennis court, 9 hole golf course, a small lake. Horses and stables. They have a private airplane hanger at our local airport have two jets in there and a few old biplanes and some old cars stored there (like old model T fords and what not that have been restored) they have a few super cars on the main estate and an helicopter to get to the airport. It was crazy.
From what I know they arrived here in about 1910 and started drilling for oil here, and a lot of their wells like other individual drillers were bought out chevron and some other local companies that ended up being bought by other local companies or regional / national/ international companies. Some families stayed very involved or cut deals where they run the stores attached to the gas stations locally, which is an empire all its own. There was about ten families that went to my school that were on similar levels of wealth, being involved in real estate pivoting from petroleum business, still being in the petroleum business. Lots were in the agriculture world as well. One family was one of the most powerful ranching families and land owners in CA at one point in time, and controlled a good amount of what happened with CAs water, which is also why nowadays Ca water situation is so messed up, generations old squabble between a few powerful land owners who were fighting to get water to their own personal projects and business empires.
Really cool to see how these families started and completely changed the face of the nation and are responsible for building the whole region up from nothing. Dragged society kicking and screaming into the modern age thru sheer will, work ethic, as well as blood sweat and tears. Also crazy to see cause these few families, even as wealthy as they are, are nothing compared to the huge names like Rockefellers or Mellons or Carnegies at the same time in history. Which makes it almost impossible to think about how rich those people are.
25:55 this is what is called a blowout. Which is the uncontrolled flow/ eruption of natural gas trapped in the rock / in the same space as the oil. It shoots up the gas and oil out of the annular space (which is the negative space left by the drill bit. Nowadays they try to mitigate this by pumping pressurized “mud” which is basically like wet oilly cement slurry type stuff that is very sticky to itself, high surface tension. So usually the gas cannot escape the rock and stays trapped in it.
Blowouts are extremely dangerous because it quickly sprays oil and gas all over. Usually before this happens when gas is found in the annular space bubbling thru the mud, it gets directed into a burn off valve where it is ejected into the air and burned off in order to prevent the pressure in the mud tanks and the drill hole from building up too high. The moment the drill hole becomes unbalanced and the gas becomes higher pressure than the mud, the gas will shoot out and push all the mud on top of it out of the hole along with lots of oil that was set to flow up to the line. Those gas overflow burn off lines can ignite the huge cloud of natural gas and the aerosolized oil flying around the air and covering every surface. Because of the fine particulate of the oil suspended in the air and the natural gas diffusing into the surround atmosphere, it becomes like an air bomb. It creates an extremely powerful explosion and shockwave. The fire can stick around floating in the air for a few seconds even.
There was a significant blow out in Oklahoma a few years ago. You can find a CSB video on it here on RUclips that explains it very well.

When they put out the well fire with dynamite, they weren't sealing the hole...When the dynamite explodes, the explosion creates a vacuum where there's no air at the center of the explosion. It only lasts a second, but it's enough to cut off the oxygen to the fire, which snuffs it out. They still use this method on oil well fires to this day.

You touched on a good point. The movie begins with Daniel alone then slowly he gains more people around him. Then he starts losing them and alienating people and he ends the movie alone again.

Yo, Daniel Plainview is one of my favorite characters in the history of cinema. He's just strangely fascinating. Even though he's this petty, miserable asshole, for no apparent reason, he's aware of it and always stood on business. Plus the way he would speak and carry himself was just funny to me....I gotta say though, it's been disturbing to see how many people are slow to put together that Paul and Eli were twins 😂 Bralik, you're definitely not the first, but it's wild to me that that's not the first assumption. Formal, you had it and then were convinced otherwise smh. Then when it was really made clear, Bralik was all shocked like it was too unlikely to believe. But why? Paul said he had a brother named Eli, they meet dude and he looks just like him, what else could it be? Why would he start acting like a different person and like they never met before? 😂😂😂 Still a great reaction, always a pleasure.

This is a wild movie. Had no idea what to expect when I first saw it. Had no idea where it was going. Had no idea what the point was. But it's highly memorable. Many theatrical scenes, not necessarily in the cinematic sense, but in the sense of a big stage play. Strong dialogue. Strong performances. Heavy concepts about family, loyalty, honesty, and of course greed.
Daniel Day Lewis shines in "In the Name of the Father". Truly a masterpiece.
'There Will Be Blood' is the title foreshadowing the end. It starts with Daniel alone. Why does he do this by himself? Daniel is a sociopath. Nobody knows more than he does. Nobody does it better than he does. So is Eli. Neither of these characters actually care about anything other than how it will benefit themselves. The battle for 'who is right' between Eli and Daniel continues all through the movie as each win their little victories over the other. Only one can win and be the better of the two. The title is just letting you know the natural outcome when two sociopaths get into a serious competition. Neither of these two men have any good in themselves.
