The issue with martials in 5e is that DMs are way too fucking stingy with magic items that give martials versatility and utility. BG3 breaks attunement wide open and lets the user make a frankenstein martial god. Wizards needs to consider massively changing the way magic items are treated in the next edition.

so true, I was playing a open hand monk with tavern brawler and shit to buff my strength and give minor elem damage on it and was doing like 40-60 dmg a turn

It's like the World of Warcraft problem. Warriors are really bad until they get some really good pieces of loot. Martials in 5e don't ever get to that stage of awesome because the itemization is bad and the Stat buffs just aren't good enough for the RAW 5e items.

Just a note on the Greatsword vs Greataxe part you said, it's not true that the GS is always better in DnD. There are several effects that lets you add an additional weapon die to the attack (often on a crit), since the GS would only get a single extra d6, the GA scales better. Most notably, Brutal Critical by Barbarian, which scales up to 2 and eventually 3 extra dice, making it 5d6 vs 4d12. There are also items with similar effects, and ways to increase the chance of a crit. And it's not just crits, Half-orcs can use the Orcish Fury feat to add 1 die to any attack once per SR / LR. This is the whole reason why Barbarians and half-orcs builds favour Greataxes.

      Yeah, I agree.
To add, 2d6 is more consistent not necessarily "better"
The chance to roll max damage is 1/12 for 1d12 and 1/36 for 2d6
The 2d6 will hover more around the expected value of 7 while the axe has an equal chance for all damage values.
And as you said, if you get anything that makes the axe more reliable it starts to scale better.

You bring up a good point that I hadn't considered, thanks! I just always for for the multiple d6's because Great Weapon Fighting Style rerolls 1's and 2's on the damage dice, so that's MUCH more effective with 2d6 than with 1d12, raising the average damage... By an amount that feels significant, lol. I don't have numbers, but it just feels intuitively good for me, so that's why I pick it. That said, I might consider going half-orc for my Dark Urge playthrough now and trying that out, so thanks again! 😁

That's a good point with brutal critical, good catch! I was just thinking about generally in games you'd want to favor consistency over crit fishing. Unless you have a really good Hold Person/monster party build or a type of homebrew poison to induce paralyze.

Baldur's Gate 3 has made me look upon 5e with the signature look of superiority of a pf2e player :^)
Gotta love being John Fighterman and getting to simply crit more often, get free recall knowledge when you attack and screaming at someone so hard they die, which isn't even fighter specific but something anyone who specs into intimidation can do

Can't agree more. It's so fun to throw enemies or objects at enemies and actually deal really good amount of damage. While also providing utility.

Also every dm ever has been full of horseshit on strength feats. High strength characters should be able to jump massive chasms, smash huge doors open, push strong enemies off cliffs, throw massive swords and halberds with ease etc.etc. BG3 allows you to do all of this 99.99% of DMs will laugh at you.

Oh yo bombs in this game are crazy. They essentially do as much force damage as a lvl2-3 spell

The only thing they really changed was itemization. Which is massive for every class that I've seen so far. Honestly nothing from the bg3 action wise really changed other than you can't grapple. You could already do some of the base special weapon actions just by specifying your attack action. It might just be lots of people seeing for the first time a creative player actually play Str builds. Most of which transfers very well to table top.

Much as I agree with you, a lot of it is also Larian solidifying rules that are vague or outright non-existent in 5e in its current state.

    • @Axelottol69

I can only compare the Bg3 to Raw or slightly homebrewed 5e cause I really think of 5e like skyrim (Painfully lacking but infinitely moldable) So in base 5e there's really no rules for specifying your attack action, which is the whole point of the battle master subclass. You can say that your DM may allow you to do this but I've played short campaigns where the DM will say no to anything that's out of the books. Even if your DM allows these actions such as "I'm going to hit them in the head to concuss them" they are still going to have to make up rules to do so, DCs that aren't up to the player. So I don't really think it's a lack of creativity on player side that causes martials to be boring in 5e. Especially if you look at Pathfinder 2 or even Dnd 4e which have rules about special maneuvers.

Fighter is broken at level 12. Gale buffs laezel with haste, she pops action surge and attacks 9 times for an average of around 30 damage per attack.
I could imagine paladin + fighter being disgusting but I'm not doing any multiclassing on my first run.
I'm doing a 2nd run once I finish the 1st and planning on running all new classes. Will miss Fighter.

Consider a shadowmonk + rogue too. It's pretty nasty for a martial combo

I really one One:DnD would learn from BG3 on making martials more fun and versatile.

yeah... doesn't look that way sadly. I was trying out the new "weapon mastery" they had in the playtest on Sunday. It was painfully lacking and some of the features were down right boring. (Longswords get to use a 1d10 instead of a 1d8)
