Probably my favorite part of the poster is Rey and Ben. The visual storytelling of the posters is really interesting in retrospect. TFA- they're framed as adversaries with their weapons locked TLJ- they're framed as "we're not sure what we are" standing defensively but facing opposite directions Episode 9- both standing defensively but facing the same direction.
"Salad bowl guy" ahahahaha. Anyway, Keri Russell said in an interview at Stephen Colbert, that her character had a cool outfit, she's not wrong. The hype is getting real! :D
Thank you, Monte, for that tie in with Rey and Padmé wearing the same colors in VIII and III. I have been wondering, commenting on why she is wearing those colors since TLJ, with no idea what it was all about. Seriously, that is perfect.
Rey's ligthsaber is probably going to be blue but I kind of love the idea that it's white lightsaber, like Ahsoka's white lightsaber. According to Dave Filoni, white lightsaber blades reflect Ahsoka's non-affiliation with the Jedi or Sith.Maybe the same is true for Rey in EpIX.
I wonder how much thought they actually put into the symbolism in this posters since we are all so thirsty for clues. It’s fun regardless. Enjoyed your guy’s take as always!
I am having flashbacks to the lead-up to TLJ when listening to you guys gave me life and kept me from going insane :) loved this podcast. My initial reaction to the poster is that it ABSOLUTELY HAS to be unfinished/WIP - it looks pretty bad to me, although I don't doubt it's real. I just think it looks REALLY unfinished and not very well put together from a graphic design standpoint. That being said, I AM HERE FOR REY'S WHITE LIGHTSABER, and I am HERE FOR BEN'S DEFENSIVE/PROTECTIVE STANCE.
some of the characters, most notably rey, look very reminiscent of the hand-painted prequel posters. the smaller characters on the poster don't look that way and it's a little jarring. i hope they go the classic hand-painted look for this. it adds such a retro feel to it. i love the prequel posters for this reason
My head canon is that all the knights of ren are women. They’d be like evil valkyries, which sounds badass af. I don’t think it’ll ever be canon, but I can dream.
Thanks for covering this, I'm so excited about this poster! A couple things I noticed as you pointed out Rey and Kylo are balanced with a very passive stance. Kylo looks like he is ready to drop his light saber. The Millennium Falcon looks like it is making another narrow escape from disaster and into the light. I want to see Kylo/Ben Solo fly it so bad! Also regarding the red troopers...if you look at the official TFA poster, you will see the storm troopers lined up similarly at the bottom. People at the time noticed they were all different heights. Well, there is a parallel being drawn. But these troopers are the same height. Clones??? And last, just an fyi Matt Smith denied any involvement with Star Wars and I can't find where he was even officially announced. Thanks again for the video. Always excited to see them.
I'm super angry about Rose not being in the poster, it was one of the first things I noticed after rey and kylo of course. Rey looks stunning. I adore her new costume
Dang I can be slow sometimes because I dont know how I didn't catch it at first but all the SW leading ladies will have donned the all white look. Leia in ANH, Padme in AOTC and now Rey in this untitled episode 9 (possibly could be called A New Order). Oh such poetic cinema 😊😁
Loved hearing your thoughts on this!! Thank you! Rey looks so cool in this and so does Kylo. Reylo lives! Kylo looks like he is handing off his light saber.... I actually think it looks really cool.
Been waiting for your takes on the poster. Interesting discussion as always especially the couples costume symbolism. I really like the poster even though I do agree that it is an unfinished retail poster. Of course Rey and Ben look fantastic. I rather have Rose standing behind Finn but I understand that it is one of the promotional posters so that's fine. I am very interested to learn why C-3PO is so armoured up. Very excited for all the upcoming promo!
I'm so happy to hear Monte as a guest! Still remember some excellent analysis back from SWC days!! Also super excited for the knights of Ren. And wondering if Kylo's saber being aimed backwards could be a symbol for him returning to his past aka the light side?
I don’t think it has to be a major plot point or anything. Even if they’re just seen working together through the movie and hinting that they end up together by them holding hands or something in the finale.
As usual loved your poster analysis though to Mary's point this is probably an ad for toys (fabulous nonetheless!). Unrelated question: will we see Obi-Wan in IX?
@Lords of the Sith Podcast I know Rey seems to be reminiscent of Padme especially the way she's going to be dressed wearing all white going into 9 but doesn't Ben remind you of Padme to from his fashion sense of wearing a cowl or this scarf life garment over his doublet kind of like Padme in AOTC where her and Anakin decided to go and rescue Obi-Wan. Just a mere curioys observation 😁
Too many important characters are missing for it to be an official poster. To me it looks like a fan boy's imagination of what they want the EPIX poster to look like. I also find it troubling that the Mellenium Falcon is slashing through Kylo's neck. Also why would he hold his saber like that? Its awkward as hell.
I agree with you about Jannah being Lando's daughter. While I don't think everyone should be related to each other, it would be a great chance to learn more about Lando.
I don't think his grip is awkward...it's defensive...and even looks like could be handing it to someone. Rey? Leia? It almost appears submissive to me...
If there is Reylo(and I'm 99% sure there will be) they need to develop it very well, so we don't have time for a parallel (and useless) side quest/story like Canto Bight. Just saying.
I think they'll have stuff like with Poe and Finn, like we saw in the previous pics. Hopefully it doesn't take too much screen time, and hopefully it's interesting.
Rey and Kylo can't handle what happened in TLJ so they retreat to their comfort zones. Rey will be hiding her scar that looks like two hands reaching out to each other. Rey will be hiding the bond because if and when the rebels find out, they will turn on her.
what do you guys think of the spoilers/theories/insight from MakingStarWars from their sources? would you guys ever make a podcast talking about your take on all of it? love you channel!!!
Making Star Wars are pretty good. Usually we make episodes when there are major spoilers, but if we make a general episode on spoilers, we'd need to mention them for sure.
Luke's lightsaber was white in one of the og posters, also Kylo mentions a clone army in 7, the helmets look similar, maybe this is it. I was disappointed with this poster, I wanted Kylo to have ditched his helmet, feels like regression of his character, i;ll have to wait and see, also the last two movies seemed to be setting up a switch, Rey showing a lot of darkside stuff while Kylo was the opposite, on top of Kylo seemingly losing most of his battles in the first two, would have made sense to make him take on more of a protagonist role, even if Rey doesn't take his place as the antagonist, would be cool to see though, to me shit fits that role more while Kylo fits the Protagonist role more, losing his first lightsaber battle, not getting his way, being unable to live up to his uncle and grandfather. Whatever ends up happening, I hope it's not too predictable as this movie will make or break the sequels, I liked tlj but alot of things do need to be carried over and handled well to make it fit into the trilogy, if JJ handles this one how he handled TFA its going to make TLJ feel out of place in between to homage movies. sorry for the rant lol I do this often
We comment on Kylo's helmet on a previous video, from when the leaks came out. Also, it's true that Kylo losing makes him fit better in the protagonist role.
What if C-3PO is wearing Chewbacca's bow and bandoleer because Chewie was killed? :( And his death (plus Leia's!) is the reason for C-3PO finally picking up a weapon and actively joining the fight?
Maybe Rey actually has a bow staff saber. I believe she has one in the comics/graphic novels. . ? Turned the broken saber into a light staff . . . ? Maybe? That would account for her weird grip in the poster
Why Rey is hiding her praetorian guard scar...she only has the leather armband on her right arm? Avoiding questions from the resistance maybe....there is no Artoo or Leia or Rose hmmmm. That red trooper is Phasma in disguise (or Hux?)
The red troopers and regular stormtroopers symbolizes the civil war between Kylo's FO and Hux's FO. The red troopers are Kylo's, they're part of the New Order.
The way Kylo's holding his lightsaber greatly resembles how Rey held hers on the poster for "The Last Jedi". Coincidences are extremely rare in the "Star Wars" universe. The backwards direction could be symbolic of how Kylo will need to look back in order to learn something new and special about himself, just like Rey did.
The concept art that was leaked a month or so ago had an alien character that looked like it could be a part of the clan that we see in the Knights of Ren vision (F). The character is very Feudal Japan looking: www.reddit.com/r/StarWarsLeaks/comments/aooezp/leaked_episode_ix_concept_art_and_reference_photos/?ref=share&ref_source=embed&
Nope, nope, nope - Salad Bowl guy is from Rey's flashback as a child - otherwise the faint voice as Kylo is stalking towards her wouldn't be saying, "Baby Jedi....". And speaking of Rey's pants - aren't we all more comfortable in yoga pants???
Lords of the Sith Podcast I really want to know you guys opinion on this. In TLJ after the hut scene where Rey angrily tells Luke to tell her what really happened between him and Ben and the words Luke uttered were "I saw darkness" and that Luke sensed it building up in Ben even in moments during his training. Do either of you think that the darkness that was building up in was because Ben found out from afar that his grandfather Anakin was also Vader and that no one especially in his family told him and that the family member who was training him who was part of that silence Ben had to see him constantly thoroughout the day and you don't think that bothered him by seeing and being around Luke most of the time throughout the day and that's why he starts to have dark and rebellious thoughts and not to mention Snoke sensing that angst and pouncing on it because you know every evil dark side user is the ultimate opportunist. What do you guys think?
It could be a mix of both. It could also be a premonition about the future, and like in many tragedies, trying to prevent a future disaster is what causes it. Hopefully we'll get more explanation for it in IX, but we might not, and then we'll have to speculate or count on extra material.
Yes! In Bloodline by Claudia Grey, we find out that he has to find out while he is with Luke, and could have been all Snoke needed to really get him on board. Ben probably felt like all along he was so pulled to the darkness and then having Vader for a grandfather, and knowing they purposely kept it from him ...makes sense it nudged him over. Perhaps Luke will make an appearance in IX, and will explain how Anakin was redeemed, and that will explain Kylo's pull to the light for him.
@@jenniferoliver8334 thats right in the Bloodline book someone ran a smear campaign against Leia and they somehow found out that she was the blood daughter of vader. The balance is overtly shown between Rey and Ben being perfectly aligned based on their positioning in the poster
Probably my favorite part of the poster is Rey and Ben. The visual storytelling of the posters is really interesting in retrospect. TFA- they're framed as adversaries with their weapons locked
TLJ- they're framed as "we're not sure what we are" standing defensively but facing opposite directions
