Well done bro. It IS unfortunately the hard truth and will eventually happen. Great choice and lesson here.
Mate I didn't think I could be anymore of a fan but you just did it
I have been a veterinary technician for 20 years and must applaud you on this release. You set a great example of what to do in this unfortunate situation.
Dave, thanks for sharing the truth of the matter. A lot of people don't have the integrity of character, and it's great to see that you are telling and showing us how it really is.
Had the same thing happen a couple weeks ago and the dog did the same thing afterwards - came over to visit and wasn't aggressive at all. I gave the dog some dog biscuits and all was well.
I work with Animals for a living in partnership with a local Veterinarian! You absolutely handled that the right way!!.... Sometimes it happens! Great outcome!
You are the epitome of a responsible and great sportsman, that dog had a family that cares about him and you allowed him to live another day. I wish all hunters, trappers, and fishermen were as thoughtful as you were. This is the ultimate argument for those that are ignorant to the fundamental ideals of our community. Rock on!
Dave I must say that you truly are one of the best out there that do what you do and I don't believe that any of us could have the heart to shoot an animal that would be domesticated however true life scenarios you never know what may occur but you always know exactly what you're doing and we love you for it God bless Dave
Good job, Dave. It seemed worth the effort. He did look a little scared. Not aggressive at all. However, _Any_ dog or whatever could freak out while you are releasing. Covering the dog with that sled kept him in one place; avoiding further injury to him and/or you. In my head, he thanked you for releasing him.
Good man .dog looks like he eats good I'm sure he will find his way home
Thank you for earnestly sharing the down-side of trapping too. I appreciate the frank honesty of your work, Dave.
Thank you sir for letting it loose. My golden got caught in a trap once and it makes me shudder to think of someone having killed it in that scenario. It shows great personality on your part!
Dave, you are the man. Prayers to you, thank you for sharing your years of knowledge. You are the best big brother ever. Peace and grace be with you.
Class act as usual Dave!
Great job Dave tbis video speaks well of your honesty integrity and character. Thanks
I wouldn't have thought of covering him up like that, clever idea. Friendly enough fellow after being released, but I've seen a dog turn on its owner of many years when in pain/shock before, so you never know. He is not small, either.
I appreciate that you make sure your audience knows the safest approach to this situation (IE you're not putting people in danger with bad advice), while accepting the risk yourself to help this dog out.
Dave Much Respect for you brother as a dog lover if my dog wandered off on private property and got trapped / shot id be upset but understand somewhat...you doing that made me even more honored to call you a friend ! God Bless ! ,;,;;, Spook
Well done Brother, as far as the dog coming back to you right away, it was very touching, he recognized your intent and responded to your kindness, you may have a new pooch on your hands now just as a straggler when you're out and about on your property. All the best in 2018, Paul
I'm loving the new version of the Trappers Cabin series. Please keep them going as much as your time allows.
Great example Dave.
Our Border Collie went missing for a couple of days and then showed up with a smaller foothold trap on his foot. There was a little swelling and a small scrape but he healed up fine. I think he learned the golden dog rule- Don't wander off.
Dave, I've been watching bushcraft videos for a while now but only recently discovered your channel. I have to say that I have gained more PRACTICAL and USEFUL knowledge and information from your videos than from any other. Your videos had me reaching for a notebook to write down these gems. I found you when I was looking for information on identifying all the trees in my woods. You taught me so much. I just had to thank you and wish you all the best for the coming new year.
you are an amazing person dave! thank you so much for sharing :-)
Thanks for the great content and for replying to me on the bushcraft & survival FB group about confusing a striker's purpose to be used on a Ferro rod and not flint. I just got a new puppy and I'm debating naming him flint. :) I had you on my 4k TV most of yesterday while doing some other work and just picking up little gems of wisdom. Got your books on my bedside. Focused on the First Aid one right now.
Though I did watch the video thanks for the pre-warning. Thank you for all the hard work and time you put into educating us! Looking forward to the next one.
You have my respect sir, well done.
Great video Dave, respect.
You the man Dave! That was tugging at the heart strings bro.
Thanks for not shying away from the ugly side of trapping. Stuff happens sometimes and this kind of information may be invaluable to a new trapper giving him a non-lethal way of dealing with this kind of situation.
You can tell a lot about a man by the way he treats a dog. I was a fan before more so now. You are a good man Charlie brown. And that is like you said a harsh truth but a great teachable moment.
Great job with the dog. Thanks for showing this.
Good for you Dave! Well done. Thank you.
That’s one lucky dog
Very cool to actually see a real situation! Keep up the great content dave.
Great form during the release. . Thanks for the lesson.
Good job brother, love the kindness
Well done Dave, although the dog was wary afterwards, he knew you helped him from the trap and was grateful. Atb.
Glad the dog was docile and you didn’t have to put it down. Good job on the release! 👍🏻
Full respect to you Dave for showing that . No doubt you,ll get flak from people . But atleast you showed it like it is
Thanks Dave =)
It's easy to forget that a large part of self-reliance is to work at being the kind of person you would want to rely upon. I don't know that I would want someone at my back if they were the kind of person to shoot a tame collared dog just because it was the easy thing to do. Well done Dave.
Awwww! Good job Dave! Respect for showing the real!!! It happens! Shame on the people who probably came from miles away to let that dog go cause they didn't want it any more.
Thanks Dave for doing the right thing; trapping isn't my thing but i have total respect for you... God bless you Brother
Good job on the release
Well done d
Dave. I released a full grown Newfoundland dog out of a cat snare that was caught around the nose. Domestic cats don't fair so well. Later and all the best.
Ya nice job Dave glad he was ok nice dog !! Great job brother
Great job bub. Important lesson.
Great video Dave, thanks for letting him go
My hats off to you for letting that big ol sweetie go.
Great job Dave!
Excellent DC, EXCELLENT!
Well done, my hats off to you brother. 😆
Good on ya Dave. Love the trapping series even though I'm not a trapper!!
Awe Dave, you big ol' softy!
You're a good man, Dave Canterbury.
Good on you Dave 🇺🇸
Well done. Thumbs up.
nice one Mr dave from a long time fan
Excellent video!!!
Good job brother.
He is one lucky puppy .
Nicely done.
thank you for sharing
Well done young man!
Good for you Dave, so glad you didn't get hurt. If you ever put that type of animal down please don't do a video. You would be hated instantly. Great video on how to handle it like a real trapper. Thanks for sharing.
Always used the snare pole method since I never trapped with a sled. This may make me pick up a cheap sled for my next line.
well done Dave.
Glad to see u still have a HEART
You did the right thing, brother!
Awesome move with the sled brother, that's using the noggin. Might show folks how to make an on the fly catch pole in the future.
Thank you I never thought of using the sled.
good job Dave
I live in the mountains here in PA I once had a lab that would take off and I wouldn't see him for a few weeks at a time then he'd just show up that dog is prolly just a roamer like mine was. Cool vid!!
There is an ugly truth to all hunting but the way you handled it was perfect. Thank you for the videos and the sharing of your knowledge.
Very kind of you brother much respect to you for freeing the dog I would never put a domestic animal down unless it is not going to survive any way I'm sure the owners thank you too! It did have cooler and tag so was sombodys pet looked healthy just stumbled on to your set:-):-):-):-)
Your a good man! Nice Job!
Good video. It's definitely sad to see that happen to a dog, I'm glad you got him out with out hurting him
Very nice of you to let The dog go, it looked clean like it has a Home somewhere
Good call on this one!
Nice job bro Dave
Good reason to check your traps often.
Nice job. Dave! One thing that I miss, your country music in your videos. :)
I would have done the samething no way could I shoot a pet unless he or she was badly hurt or trying to hurt me. Great job dave makes me love your channel even more now...
Well done Dave. The dog looks fine and better than being dead. I would have done the same thing.
I hunt on my father in laws land out in southern Ohio with the pipeline running through his land, came across two wild dogs just running a game trail about 2 years ago. Do you see wild dogs out on your land often? Surpised the heck out of me. Good video as always, well done.
Dave, I have a feeling you will see that dog again, he now knows he has a friend in those woods. The dog looked like it might be a border collie mix, so he/she isnt stupid..it will be leery of any chains it sees in the woods.
Classy move Dave.
Nice work.
I've been there. Was completely surprised by the first time I caught a pet dog in my trap without a home nearby. The dog was very friendly and had a sore paw, but walked away nonetheless. Another day that I did catch the neighbors dog, he was very upset and I had to use a catchpole to release him, which he then promptly ran away. I also caught a couple pet cats, again, with nothing more than a sore paw. It is the harsh reality of the trapline being most of us are near residences somewhere, but nothing to worry about.
Well done!
Man, that dog looked exactly like my dog Jack. Thank God my little buddy is safe and warm in the frontroom.
Personally, I'd take the bite before ever shooting a dog...especially a healthy looking dog wearing a collar. 1/2 mile isn't far to roam, somebody around there cares for that big fella. & will be glad to see him home. You absolutely did the right thing David.... good on ya.
well dog had a collar and responded to human commands. i would let it go too.
Mans best friend, I’ll bet he was very great full. Right decision well done. We don’t kill if we don’t have too.
Thanks Dave, glad it ended well, hopefully you wont meet that pooch again...
you are a good man i hope he finds his home
Good stuff bro, good to see
Good job Dave, I hope somebody would do the same for you
Hopefully he wouldn't step on a trap lol. But it was a good deed.
Great Vid Dave
Good job man
,,thanks for sharing,,,
