It's amazing how simplicity usually equates to versatility. The single shot 12 with the combination of available loads and the addition of adapters truly makes it the most versatile firearm ever made. It's so ironic that I watched this today because I had mine out earlier and was piddling with hand loading myself. Looking forward to the cabin series season 2.
SurvivorMetalMan Im with you on this one. Ever since the state wildlife dept found massive pot fields within an hour of me and Mexican ID's in their sleeping bags, the cartels are in Oklahoma. Not to mention other 2 legged predators.
SurvivorMetalMan thats a good reason to carry a big bore revolver like a 44 or a 45 big lead slugs a low power round ball load for small game or a snake shot or even black powder loaded shells I live in So California and a 357 or bigger is legal during deer season I carry a 45 ether a Ruger BlackHawk or a 625 Smith and Wesson the first round up is a snakeshot Like Dave said check and see what is legal during Your different seasons
I inherited a Single Shot 12ga from my grandfather that helped to feed a family with 13 children during the depression here in Michigan then was also the only other firearm used on a farm from just after WW2 up through to the mid 80's. Hunted with consistently, used for varmints putting down sick live stock and deer hunting until grandpa picked up a 1903 Springfield from the hardware store. He showed me how they made cut-shells. The break action was pinned mutiple time until it got to loose to be safe to shot. Has a soldered bead for a sight and some designs carved into the stock. I got to hear more than a few stories before he died but It was very much considered just another tool and it had a purpose which back then things were not kept around that did not have a purpose. I'll have to look through your other videos and watch your 12ga vides.
FREAKIN awesome video here Dave! Hoping no one complains about the lighting, because I think it adds a touch of Vintage to your Cabin series! Keep them coming Sir!
I remember when you and Shortlane were doing the package development several years ago, it is relieving to watch you explain it to another crew of viewers!
Great video. And another thing with the single 12 with is my favorite gun is you tend to make better shots because you know you only have one shot. Me and my friends would go duck hunting and yes they kill 6 where I kill 4 but I only shot like 7 times where they went through 2-3 boxes of shells haha. Thank you Dave for sharing with us you have a good one and stay safe.
I've found 2 12ga H&R shotguns in the last couple months for $100 but cosmetically they are about fair condition, but they are functional. One was even a smoothbore with rifle sights. Nice ones are about $150, like you said. I've got quite the collection of the H&R/NEF singles now, over a dozen rifles and shotguns altogether. Hatfield folding single shots can be had for $100 or so and those are becoming very popular and there's some cool mods I've seen done on them.
If when you say an H R ....meaning Harrinton Richardson 12 guage. I got one at Christmas when I was 14. Single shot. Man I loved that gun. I think it was only 50 dollars back then. I'm 53 now. Great video brother
It is, kind of. The original H&R went out of business in the 80's, but another company sprang up in the early 90's that used the same designs and patents. I think the company was called something like H&R 1871. They got bought out, and combined with another firearms maker by Marlin, I think... Anyway, for several years, they did business as New England Firearms and made, more or less, the same single shot, break action you got for Christmas almost 40 years ago.
The trappers cabin looks great and I agree with the 12 gauge crack barrel I love single shots. Is season 1 or the building of the cabin on youtube? I would love to see a tour of the cabin. I grew up in the swamps of Louisiana living a lot of what you teach but I have learned so much from your vids and appreciate what you are doing. Thanks and have a great holiday.
Great video Dave (as usual) I dont have a lot of firearms. I have just what i need. Just picked up a used single shot H&R 12ga for $75, ordered today the adaptors for 9mm, .22LR, 209 adaptor, and 12 to 20 Mossburg 20ga pump 30-30 lever action 30-30 bolt action. Kinda rare. I use hornaday ammo with it,makes it better for long range, and ballistics arent far off from 308 .22 Ruger pistol Glock 19 9mm for CCW 44mag revolver carried on hip while hunting
Nice thing about Montana is we have no caliber restriction for hunting ( centerfire). I use the 223 or 22-250 for Antelope and deer out to 300 yards, if longer a 25-06. For bigger animals Moose and Elk and Bear a 7 Remington Mag or my 45-70 if in timber. But other various caliber rifles work too. Lead birdshot here runs $50-$60 for 25 lbs and most gun shops don't carry it here, unless I'm willing to drive 120 miles to Cabelas. UPS freight fees now are unreal for shipping in my opinion.
on your recommendations I got an H&R 12 gauge single break barrel.. Also got 3" rifled adapters in .22, .410, 9mm, 20 guage as well as 209 shotgun primer adapter which turns it into a muzzle loader. Got a sack of 6 shot as well. Changed out the wood stock for choate forearm and stock which allows storage of ammo and short adapters. This is my most versatile firearm hands down. Shooting it like a muzzle loader is literally a blast while loading my own shells using black powder is like you said another highly versatile practice. Thinking of saving to get the 8" .22 wmr insert as they are a bit pricey. Does the longer inserts effectively allow for a significant long reach in accuracy? Thanks for your vids and work on creating this system. This break barrel would be my go to gun if I could have only one.
I have a 22 in dbl shotgun by Stevens. Be a great muzzle loader/ 22cal. Drilling setup. I haven't checked for a built-in choke in barrel. Modified is a quarter down barrel and full a dime. I have a 311 Stevens double with modified and full in 28 in. Modified on the right and full to the left. Your golf ball look on the round ball will give you about 25 more yards on the shot. Use the brown bess as a comparison.
Dave, what do you think of side-by sides? Beside the weight, and possibly cost, it seems the ideal compromise. You can have two shotgun tubes or add a rifle adapter to one tube (or both), affording target-of-opportunity exploitation.
oldgravely My brothers and I used the same gun 22lr/20ga that had a 410 adaptor it was a 24 D model gun gun my oldest brother took the gun and sold it but he forgot to give the adaptor to the guy I have it works good in a H&R 20 still use to this day and 55 yrs young now.
For sure 12s are the all around guns but I think 20s 410 s would work the same reload slugs shot I just picked up a tammer h and r 410 and the 22 adapter haven't looked back yet and just dropped a coyote with a slug but dad always said take the 12 to hunt take the 22 to have fun !! Take care brother
got an h&r pardener and for ease of carrying in the woods and the versatility of the shotgun cartridge its the cats ass, kicks like a mule though, but its so simple to clean it awesome, best 75 dollars my dad ever spent.
Can't believe that NEF/H&R discontinued the single shot shotguns! By far, one of the best firearms available to the bushcraft community. Anybody have any suggestions on which model to switch to now? Looking at the Stevens perhaps.
Curious about the accuracy from the short lane adapters. I figure a 3" chamber adapter for a .410 equates to 2"+/- of rifling, there by limiting you to snubnose accuracy. I know there are people that can shoot short barreled guns well but with the rudimentary sights on a shotgun how accurate are these adapters really? I suppose it really isn't an issue on the trap line if your using it to dispatch an animal caught in a trap. The Savage 24 or newer model 42 would be a great substitute for that .410 allowing you to shot both .410 and .22 with no adapter and better sights. My 24 is very accurate.
I use my 410 as a muzzleloader and by God I forgot to clean it I never knew Pyrodex was that corrosive please please please please tell these guys to make sure they clean the gun after using Pyrodex I was just glad it was not my 45 caliber Cattleman revolver carbine and just an old-fashioned for 10 I cleaned it up the gun works fine please let the guys know that Pyrodex is very corrosive please refresh their memories great Channel thank you for your knowledge and expertise
Hey Dave, do you have any other single shot 12 gauges that you would recommend? I've been looking I'm my area for am H and R fotthe past year or so since I first watched your videos and can't find one. Thank you for what you do!
Hi David. Great watching these videos. I live in the UK and don't have firearms in the same way you guys do, but this stuff reminds me of my time in OK back in the 70s and the wonderful tolerant people I knew there, i was a brash young man and certainly in need of tolerance. I have been meaning to ask you, you being my go-to primitive fire expert, what is your take on fire roll technique as a fire starting process? Maybe using inner bark and wood ash? I would value your input. Cheers
I agree that a 12 ga. single shot is the most versatile gun, and if I could ONLY have 1 gun, this would be it. I've been in the traditional hypothetical conversations like this that guys inevitably get into and several guys are AK or AR etc. Then when I laughingly mention small game hunting with one of those, some guys understand my choice. Thanks.
Dave, been following you for years and love your channel... but as a non hunter, I’ve no idea what you are talking about here. You should make a flow chart detailing this information.
Awesome video Dave. Great information. I'm curious. Would the lead be toxic while melting to make the shot? Handling the ingot and having that shot in the meat sources that you gather? Maybe I'm thinking too far into it. Like lead pencils being toxic and giving people lead poisoning. I'm probably misinformed though.
Wash you hands Vredesbyrd58 before eating and don't stick it in your mouth and you will be all right. You just don't want to ingest lead, like old lead paint. It is not dangerous other wise. A old 74 year old man who grew up in the lead paint age.
Great information! When I travel towing my camper around the lower 48, I have to be careful in selecting what to carry. Carry laws can vary state to state, so it is not worth the risk of carrying a sidearm. For protection from two legged predators, I carry bear spray with a 35 foot range. I also carry a .22 caliber pellet rifle. It has a velocity of about 900FPS using a 14 gram pellet. It's also legal in all 48 contiguous states, and Federal and State land. It can be used to easily harvest small game, and will greatly discourage the two legged kind...
I have a nef in 22-250. I use an adapter that looks like a 22-250 shell that holds a 22LR shell. This way I get the accuracy of the full length of the Barrel in the right caliber.
Dave, you talk about not getting those single barrel 12 gauges for $100 anymore. There is a company called Hatfield that Wal-Mart has started carrying that has several single barrel shotgun models that are $100.
Where's the double 12 g. with twin triggers? NOTHING beats the double for putting meat on the table. I know I have seen you with a Remington 1889. Are you advocating for the single shot for a less expensive option or do you have a different justification?
What do you think of .22wmr for a trappers gun? I'm looking to get into messing around with trapping and just get a heritage .22 which included the .22mag cylinder is there any reason o stick to LR to put down trapped animals?
Jeremy Long .22wmr in my opinion is an extremely underrated round. It has a lot of power and velocity for how small it is. I'd trust it over a .22 LR to take out a downed animal. The only downsides I see are the cost is going to be much higher than LR. Also from Dave's point of view it's not a versatile round. Not many firearms use .22 mag. Where as carrying .22 Lr will allow you to carry ammo for multiple guns. Also packing the .22 mag is more difficult. They're heavier and larger. If those three things don't both bother you then there is no downside.
Am i the only 20 gauge fan around here?I look at my single shot 20 as a modern hudson's bay gun. Lighter...doesnt kick as bad and will usually get the job done as well as a 12.
Good video Even though I don't have interests in black powder, don't like single shots but I do have a couple for the kids and my wife cause they are just learning fire arm safety and that's what I was taught with. Here in AZ and coyote are almost always in a pack and have attacked many people and getting brave, a 12 certainly is most common but a pump or auto. Single shot for what you're doing and black powder I understand you're program. But I'll bet in my great grand dad's day he wished he had what is offered today instead of those old weapons you use.
BB do work and I also have used them, but check your state laws. Here in KY we are restricted to #4 and smaller for small game hunting. I exclusively use #4 or #5 whichever is available for all my small game hunting. I believe over the years they have changed the composition of our lead, and the smaller shot doesn't retain the kinetic energy. I may be wrong on this and this is just my opinion, but more in my experience. .
I watch allot of funny media I know allot of funny people I'm a pretty funny guy I have high standards you could say I guess Your face after you dropped that thing made me lose my shit Bravo
Thanks for bringing the cabin series back to life Dave. Loving it so far. How about a tour?
I always carry a firearm in the woods, even if I’m not hunting, the two legged animal is the most dangerous. You just never know.
Great video Dave!

Awsome series Dave, thank you for taking the time to share the knowledge.
I remember when you and Shortlane were doing the package development several years ago, it is relieving to watch you explain it to another crew of viewers!
Love those single 12s have one in 12 and 20 that go with me everywhere used them for everything from quail to bear and never failed
Very informative as always Dave. Looking forward to a tour of that cabin.
A good idea for a video would be a tour of the cabin!! I’m curious as to what it looks like.
Great video ! love that you use the 12 gauge to its full range of applications.
Going back to the 12 gauge roots. I like it Dave.
Love these type videos like the yurt and tent. Thanks for all you do
great video dave thanks for all you do

Dave, these series are awesome !
Great video. Thanks for sharing.
I look forward to the continuation of this series
Love the videos like this and watching you hunt and cook what you eat it's very interesting and entertaining.
been using Bp in my shotshell reloads for a while since i saw your vid on it and it works great.
Great video as always Dave!!!
Thanks much my friend!!! You share do.. so much information and it's all good and usable!!! Blessings 😇
Looks like that lead I hooked you up with came in handy lol
Once again Dave so much knowledge by watching your videos awesome
Merry Christmas and happy new year
Is that a Fjallraven Kaipak in the back? Glad to see this type of series making a return to the channel, keep it up brother.
Great video Dave (as usual) I dont have a lot of firearms. I have just what i need.

been thinking about getting 30 30 lever action. Only lever action I have is a .22 but I really like it. What do you use 30 30 for?
Great video Dave

You the man Dave. 👍👊🤘
Dave Canterbury ... May I suggest that you check out some of the past issues of Backwoodsman Magazine regarding turning roundball into square shot.
Thanks for the great information!
Henry firearms are starting to make single shot shotguns and rifles again in America. I believe in all gauges an several calibers as well.
Dave, what do you think of side-by sides? Beside the weight, and possibly cost, it seems the ideal compromise. You can have two shotgun tubes or add a rifle adapter to one tube (or both), affording target-of-opportunity exploitation.
I use my savage 24C, 22lr over 20ga with a 18" 30/30 adapter barrel. need to get a 9mm pathfinder adapter to go with the kit
oldgravely My brothers and I used the same gun 22lr/20ga that had a 410 adaptor it was a 24 D model gun gun my oldest brother took the gun and sold it but he forgot to give the adaptor to the guy I have it works good in a H&R 20 still use to this day and 55 yrs young now.
Absolutely love my 12 gauge.
Bear and moose protection to bird.
I just got back from deer hunting in eastern VA. They are only allowed to use shotguns and buckshot if you are hunting with the dog clubs.
Can't believe that NEF/H&R discontinued the single shot shotguns! By far, one of the best firearms available to the bushcraft community. Anybody have any suggestions on which model to switch to now? Looking at the Stevens perhaps.
Stevens is starting to manufacture the NEF/H&R single shot shotgun (or a very close approximation) .
I heard Mossberg was manufacturing one but don't know .
I just got a NEF pardner in 12ga brand new from gunbroker. A lot of people are selling them.
Hey Dave I was wondering what you thought about the Henry single shot and chiappa firearms makes a over/under shotgun/rifle?
Have you looked at Savage Stevens 301 single shot? Looks to be a good option if looking for something new.
I was wondering if you have looked at the new savage/stevens single shots? Do you know if they are as solid as the older ones etc.
Hey Dave what do you think about the 20 gauge shotguns for trapper mentality
I agree about the H & R shotguns. Not sure about the .22 adaptor as far as accuracy goes, but up close it would be effective.
Thanks sir very good vidoe good info. Thanks god bless
Hey Dave, do you have any other single shot 12 gauges that you would recommend? I've been looking I'm my area for am H and R fotthe past year or so since I first watched your videos and can't find one. Thank you for what you do!
what's your opinion on cut shells and wax slugs? I guess it would be good to know about in a survival situation.
Thanks, you answered my question. :)
Cheers

You spent time here in Oklahoma? What part?
Dave I know you love the single shot shotguns but have you ever tried a double barrel.
Thanks.
With H&R being defunct, what 12ga would you recommend if I were to buy new?
Shot tower. How high do you have to get? I have seen carvings of operations several stories tall.
Dave, what happened to the Heritage .22 you used?
Dave, been following you for years and love your channel... but as a non hunter, I’ve no idea what you are talking about here. You should make a flow chart detailing this information.
Walmart has a 99 dollar single shot shotgun
Awesome video Dave. Great information. I'm curious. Would the lead be toxic while melting to make the shot? Handling the ingot and having that shot in the meat sources that you gather? Yep!!! Just a handful of grass and a pull cord.

Jerry Roberts not legal in NJ without a NJ state issued firearms id card. in NJ pellet/bb guns are firearms. be careful on the east coast

I totally agree on the single shot 12 gauge.
Hi Dave, what size round mold is that? .690?
Hello. Another great info vid! I concur with your thoughts. Thanks.
Dave where would you recommend getting muzzleloading ramrod that breaks down for the 12 single shot
Short Lane Arms
What is the advantage of single shot over double shot?
Hello dave from freezing cold Scotland
Are there Remington 870 attachments for a .22?
Those 410 have good patterns at a fair distance
Why are there so many deleted videos in this playlist
Where's the double 12 g. with twin triggers? NOTHING beats the double for putting meat on the table. I know I have seen you with a Remington 1889. Are you advocating for the single shot for a less expensive option or do you have a different justification?

Good video Even though I don't have interests in black powder, don't like single shots but I do have a couple for the kids and my wife cause they are just learning fire arm safety and that's what I was taught with.
Here in AZ and coyote are almost always in a pack and have attacked many people and getting brave, a 12 certainly is most common but a pump or auto. Single shot for what you're doing and black powder I understand you're program. But I'll bet in my great grand dad's day he wished he had what is offered today instead of those old weapons you use.
I have several pumps a DB Guns but have not found them necessary in the Eastern Woodlands
Aww I wanted to see your side arm, being in the uk we don’t get to play with them 😢😀
I picked up an H&R 12 ga a couple weeks back for $ 80
I didn't know short lane made a rifled 410 to 22lr adapter. I thought they were all smooth bore.
Dave could you maybe partner with chiappa firearms to produce a single shot 12 ga similar to what h&r used to produce?
Jarren Rollins check out the savage 301 its really close to a copy of the old h&r's
I like Dave's jacket
Dang Dave, late upload! Anyway notification squad.
Will taking the #8 shot out and replacing it with regular .177 bb's be any good?
I have loaded BB's in shells many times it is a great Coyote Load
BB do work and I also have used them, but check your state laws. Here in KY we are restricted to #4 and smaller for small game hunting. I exclusively use #4 or #5 whichever is available for all my small game hunting. I believe over the years they have changed the composition of our lead, and the smaller shot doesn't retain the kinetic energy. I may be wrong on this and this is just my opinion, but more in my experience. .
very interesting brief on hunting regs in ohio and versatility of the 12g!!!
Go Dave!!
