TheKodiak72, this may have been the case but research also shows not only better ball flight but also less back pressure to firearm-It would probably cause more damage as well and that may have been the original intent for sure-
Works like a charm!!!! Received my .710 mold and collapsable ladle this past week. I had some time today so I went out back to cast several balls. I used a plumbers torch on a small propane tank and in about 20 minutes I had ten perfect .71 caliber round balls. The filing of the sprue and adding dimples with a rasp file was the quickest part of the whole operation. They look fantastic and I will be shooting them out of my NEF at the range in a couple of weeks....... Thanks Dave
Thanks Dave love the series... any possibility of doing something on using horses.. such as packing em to load carry, looking after a horse on a long journey, carrying capacity etc ... that sort of thing?
The wife and I really enjoy your videos brotha! We've seen almost all of them and yeah you've been pretty thorough with shelters and trapping. I love the Trapping stuff the most. Getting gear together, getting traps waxed and can't wait to start this year. The Utah Trappers Associations is having a pow wow this spring for members and anyone interested. Hoping to get some good pointers for my area and meet the community of trappers. Thanks Dave for everything you do for..... Dave-Banjo
Dave, another great video. I came across an article in the lastest issue backwoodsman magazine the article was written by a man named Dale Shadle. He talks how many to make shot by running melted lead through window screen, letting it drop about twenty feet into cool water. In the article he says it will lead the barrel of your fowler because it the shot is not coated. I would be glad to send the info to you just let me know.
I was always curious at what kind of accuracy could be obtained from a chewed ball from a smooth bore. Thanks for shootin' a couple of rounds for us to see.
Thanks Dave for the response back if you've haven't had that problem them I probably shouldn't worry but just a thought I had.. I use the in line muzzle loaders so it's new to me but I will be running a 12 gas single shot this year but right now for my scouts on my property I have a H&R 410/45CAL survivor it holds its own on squirrel and rabbit
always enjoy your videos Dave! I have learned much from your posts over the past 2 years and always find something that I never thought of before or get good idea that I can modify for my own needs. you may already know this but it wasn't mentioned in the video. the pin you made to clean out the hole where the primer is, is known as a vent prick (at least in cannons and muskets that is). please keep the videos coming!!
Hey Dave, shooting a bit low with a shotgun at 25m is normal. The bead sights on most shotguns are zeroed at 100m. The 2" pull right is either your trigger press, you might have too much finger through the trigger guard, or being that you are left handed, your strong hand may be unconsciously pushing the barrel minutely in anticipation of the shot. My sister has the same issue because she is left handed and right eye dominant, if she anticipates the shot she always hits at 3-4 o'clock. Semper Fi
Another great video, Dave! Makes me want to ditch my pump shot 12ga and get a single shot to give this a go. :D BTW, If you live in a fishing village, the lead-core ropes used as foot ropes on gill nets have little elongated bits of lead in them. When I was a kid I used to use them in my pellet gun...they were a perfect fit! I'm sure they would make good shot for shotguns as well. Oh, and of course there's lead fish line weights and lead cod jiggers as well! All good sources of lead in a pinch. :)
I think the chewed ball being more accurate seems totally plausible. They did a golf ball car design episode of Myth Busters and showed that the "dimples" really did help the aerodynamics. Great video.
Dave great Video, for the people having problems watching the vid over the last couple of hours, YT updates certain things at certain times of the day, I think, for me in the UK it happens just after midnight up till around 0200 every night (I work the night shift) and any vid over a minute I have problems viewing especially the new uploads, which happens to be Dave's and other US channels due to the time differences.
Sir, an EXCELLENT piece of advise in converting a 12ga single shot shotgun into a blackpowdered weapon. Thank you Sir, for your great video and hard work. Oscar
Great video and demonstration Dave! Really impressed with the accuracy of the round ball ammo. Surprised we haven't heard anyone farting knowledge about how the .22lr is the better choice for long term sustainability . Just wait. They're comin'!
my grampa use to make lead shot by hanging a coffee can with holes in the bottom out from the hay window of the barn and pouring hot led into it and allowing it to drip into a shallow watering tub to cool
Thanks. You answered a few questions I had in this video. The DNR here in WI are scratching their heads trying to figure out if this counts as muzzleloader for muzzleloader season. What do they say in your states?
Thanks. I'll pass that on to our local game warden. It will be nice to have another season to hunt in. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and skills with us.
Looks like you got a little less snow than we did here in Clermont County. With the Nasty cold coming Monday and Tuesday are you going to try and do some extreme cold tips video(s)?
My dad made shot and it was pretty easy. Cut a channel into a flat piece of wood with a exit channel small enough the make small drops. Let the drops fall into water about six inches deep. A bowl, jar or hole in the ground works fine. You get great shoot with a few tries. Once you get it working right, shoot for life.
hey dave im getting ready to get a tarp and was looking at tentsmiths but then i started looking at woodsman school tarp , which is waterproof and fire resistant for less money. if money and weight werent an issue would you have any preference, thanks, bill
Dave have u ever tried to just drip small drops of the molten lead into cool water if u can get a good consistent drop down pat it may work out for making shot in the field might not be perfect or the exact same size but it should make almost a ball shape
hi dave great video love the longhunter series, could you advise me on the choke to fire these balls, i have a ip-18 baikal 12g single with a 2,3/4 chamber but not sure on the choke, what would u say is the best choke to use and the pressure it should have, also like to say have a great way of making wax slugs that dont break up and will be accurate and bust through 2inch wood at 20yards.
aka, knight50cal here. long time, glad to see the vids are still coming and strong, luv to see just how far you've came since the days of the lowly olé forum page. I dont know if this is one of the methods you guys tried to make shot, but I seem to remember someone explaining to me about dripping molten lead from a distance I can't remember, couldn't have been more than a foot or two, dripping it from a distance into a bucket of water. I've seen some pretty round ball of sadder when it falls into a bucket while soldering copper pipe at work, so in theory it should work for lead as well. actually hope you guys can figure out. it almost has to work. and do you sell the 209 conv for a ss 20ga?
Yeah we tried that to brother its messy and non consistent at best, much easier to mold balls. You can call Short Lane Arms and he can send you a 20GA/209. I remember ya brother
Awesome! have you ever thought about storing away lead ingots? I think it would be a wise idea for anyone owning a shotgun of any kind...if you could find molds to make slugs, 00 buck, and 1-8 shot I think you would be good to go for any type of situation whether it be self defense or hunting....I would also store black powder and smokeless powder and of course primers
Hey dave, do you feel the chamber entirely with sheep wool ? because i want to use that system on my cooey 84, but it troubles me that the ball can be in the chamber and so, be really loose ?
My 13 y/o nephew is really small for his age. He cares a 410, he has the adapter, power and shot, what size mold should he buy to make his on balls? Thank you and God Bless
Where do you find a lead ladle without a handle like Dave has? Online, it can't find any and I would like the compactness of one without a handle that I could put a stick into for one. Also the cheapest I have seen the ball mold was $40. Is there any cheaper? He mentioned 30, but I can't find it.
Me and my dad live on land but not enough to hunt on, sometimes we find friends land but not reliable, do you know any soulition or public hunting land? ( havover Virginia)
Get a pamplet called Gold and Fish. In your area you should have somethig similar and then get a gold pan and do some prospecting. The public land is open year round... some animals are open to hunt year round so do some panning and you should be able to occupy some public land for weeks at a time. Round here it is two weeks.... after that you can file a letter of intent which costs nothing and "placer mine" longer.
Dave we are getting ready to have extreme weather here in ohio as u probably know already think u might be able to do an extreme vid for us..... just a thought
Josh Price Don't think I will be here when the weather hits, I have to travel to get the new Triple Barrel Shotgun engraved and finished before leaving for Shot show in Vegas next week, Hoping to get a ML hunt in tomorrow then I will be gone most of the next 2 weeks
no problem for me, but only watchable in 240p i have the same mold from T.O.W, and i think the sprue cutte r is generic, so it's the same sprue cutter for all caliber. i think it work well with small caliber but is a pain in the A.. when it comme to a large ball. oh and dave, is it possible to ship this adapter to france ? is there a regulation about that in usa ?
I would venture to say that between my modern trapping series and Primitive trapping I have almost 100 trapping videos brother, and I know I have at least 30 Shelter videos- Do I really need to concentrate on more of those?
***** no....no u don't lol...but hey cant blame them I have watched all your videos and still look forward to the next no matter the topic you discuss :)
If you put a scope on your H and R like mine the accuracy issue is solved and it's very very nice. I use a nikon slug hunter and with fiocci slugs out of my smooth bore I get 2 inch groups at 100 yards with my ported improved cylender steel choke.
Dave, If all you have is round ball, you can melt it and drip the hot lead into a bucket of water; makes some decent shot in a pinch. Not perfect, and the size varies, but it'll do if you've got nothing else.
You might try 000 buck shot instead in that 12 gage as on deer size targets it is much harder to miss. I do that for reloading shotgun hulls and blackpowder. Also have you tried melting lead in your ladle and dripping it a drop at a time into a can of water. I made some nasty keyholeing black powder loads that way.
Thank you that's what I did I actually closed the web page reset the computer and got back online and it started working. I mistakenly thought that there was a problem with the upload, but thanks for your help.
Dave. This may be a silly question but as your hair and beard are so much longer than when you did your Yurt and Tipi series, could this be regarded as a natural resource. For example beard hair for musket pan cleaning brushes and head hair as tinder?
Stoney Lonsome I saw it in a movie. A man held captive had nothing better to do so he braided a rope from his hair and escaped with it and when the guards saw they tried using his rope, he set it on fire and they fell to their deaths. I think it was an old King kong movie.
How safe it is to handle lead like that? I was under the impression that lead fumes were extremely dangerous (smoke and fumes seems to be blowing into your face from time to time), even in small concentrations, not to mention the dangers of it being on your skin.
Dave, couldn't you use a pump action just as well as a break open 12 gauge for shooting black powder with a reloaded shell or wit the short lane adapter?
Dave nice video since you started with the single shot 12 development it taught me a lot on its versatility and I will be doing the same thing because it makes sense but I do have a question it might be stupid might not be but when you load the 12 with that adaptor it's powder, wading, shot, wading correct? If so how does the powder not fall out the touch hole when you break it open?
You could prime the gun first in this case as the H&R has a cross bar safety mech but the powder is course enough it will not fall through the whole if you are using an Equivelant like Pyrodex
Yes I added black powder to my list 25 years ago. Only problem that I have had was two chambers fireing at the same time with one of my revolvers and I stopped that from happening by using an over the powder wad and an over bullet wad with grease around the edges. I have had revolvers charged for several years.... dropped one in a puddle and still had it fire just fine.
What shotgun is tjat i have a herrington and richards trooper 20 guage model i can change barels on it i have a 30-30 barel and a 22 hornet barel i can get a 12 guage barel to so i was just woundering it it was the same gun
Are there any substitutes for lead that you could work with in bush that aren't harmful to the environment? Just curious even though I understand this most likely wasn't a concern for the historic longhunter. I'm a big fan Dave! You do amazing work, thanks for sharing all this knowledge
TheKodiak72, this may have been the case but research also shows not only better ball flight but also less back pressure to firearm-It would probably cause more damage as well and that may have been the original intent for sure-
Dave, I like when you, Brian and Steve all do similar videos. Each perspective is unique, I learn something from each of you.
I love you 21st century long hunter videos Dave. Especially the firearm videos. Great stuff! Take care brother! Stay warm out there.
I love the set up Dave thanks for sharing God bless
Works like a charm!!!! Received my .710 mold and collapsable ladle this past week. I had some time today so I went out back to cast several balls. Not sure what the tech issue is video uploaded fine may be a YT Glitch
Thanks Dave love the series... any possibility of doing something on using horses.. such as packing em to load carry, looking after a horse on a long journey, carrying capacity etc ... that sort of thing?
I'm happy you made this video as I have been needing this multiple questions answered. Thanks for the video!

still won't for me
det414 thanks! working now!
You have the best gob ever Dave.

Great video Dave..
Thanks
Great video Mr. Dave!

Awesome videos! Just sound methods for the everyman. Thank you!
Played for me, great content.

Always something good to watch and learn from,Thanks and keep your powder dry.
Another great demo. Thanks.

Yes Vent or Touch hole pick lost the words on camera LOL
Also known as a nipple pick.
know you are a busy dude. But love these old vids man.
I miss you on dual survival:(

Great and informative vid. Thanks! Are you concerned about the EPAs rumored/future restrictions in regards to lead ammo?
Hey Dave how would you replicate powder? Thanks. Good video
I think the chewed ball being more accurate seems totally plausible. They did a golf ball car design episode of Myth Busters and showed that the "dimples" really did help the aerodynamics. Great video.
"I'll take that everyday and twice on Sunday." Ha! Never heard that one before.
Is that the box I mailed you? Why you shoot'n up my box?! lol
Ha!
Sir, an EXCELLENT piece of advise in converting a 12ga single shot shotgun into a blackpowdered weapon.
Thank you Sir, for your great video and hard work.
Oscar
Hey Dave Have you ever recovered one of those balls after you shot an animal and used it again
Thanks Dave, very interesting video, never shot black powder but i think i'm going to try it now
Great video and demonstration Dave! Really impressed with the accuracy of the round ball ammo. Surprised we haven't heard anyone farting knowledge about how the .22lr is the better choice for long term sustainability . Just wait. They're comin'!

when you set up the 12gauge for black powder can you use solid black powder substitites or only loose powder?
played fine for me, thanks
Do some more blacksmithing videos like how you got steel and they are very interesting and informing so please make more blacksmithing videos
Thanks. You answered a few questions I had in this video. The DNR here in WI are scratching their heads trying to figure out if this counts as muzzleloader for muzzleloader season. What do they say in your states?
Ohio says it is a legal ML as long as you are not carrying any shells-
Thanks. I'll pass that on to our local game warden. It will be nice to have another season to hunt in. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and skills with us.
Just found your RUclips channel, great info.
thx Dave...
I'm up in Cleveland, but I'd love to come down to the Pathfinder school sometime!
Nice shootin bud. Great vid.Playin catch-up here as I been gone for a bit......thanks for the bump as well
Looks like you got a little less snow than we did here in Clermont County. With the Nasty cold coming Monday and Tuesday are you going to try and do some extreme cold tips video(s)?
Have you ever checked out the Littleton Shotmaker? I've been considering buying one.

whats your brand of smokes Dave?

great video
How did you drill holes with your sail needle to make the dog bone? just watched the guy lines video. Thanks Dave love the education.
question:
What is the powder charge you used?
thank you
Love it like going back in time
How much is shipping from your website
hey dave im getting ready to get a tarp and was looking at tentsmiths but then i started looking at woodsman school tarp , which is waterproof and fire resistant for less money. if money and weight werent an issue would you have any preference,

I can't find a .71 caliber ball mold anywhere. Biggest mold i can find is a .69 cal
Tire weights work great to melt down.. free broke ones at tire stores
My 13 y/o nephew is really small for his age. He cares a 410, he has the adapter, power and shot, what size mold should he buy to make his on balls? Thank you and God Bless
Hey Dave, loved the video I'm how do you shoot the regular shot is there a special way that has to be done
What I do for my 150 year old double barrel is I take a square of cloth and kinda fold the shot up in the cloth then slide it dwn the barrell.
Where do you find a lead ladle without a handle like Dave has? Online, it can't find any and I would like the compactness of one without a handle that I could put a stick into for one. Also the cheapest I have seen the ball mold was $40. Is there any cheaper? He mentioned 30, but I can't find it.
Dave i was thinking a peice of steel cablew of wire with some hooks at different heights would make a great pot hanger
Me and my dad live on land but not enough to hunt on, sometimes we find friends land but not reliable, do you know any soulition or public hunting land? ( havover Virginia)

right on dave good luck n be safe
Hi Dave,
Could you make shot by melting the lead then doing a drop into water? I know one drop at a time would take forever but just curious.
no problem for me, but only watchable in 240p
i have the same mold from T.O.W, and i think the sprue cutte r is generic, so it's the same sprue cutter for all caliber. i think it work well with small caliber but is a pain in the A.. when it comme to a large ball.
oh and dave, is it possible to ship this adapter to france ? is there a regulation about that in usa ?
hey dave do you think you can do more food trapping and just trapping and shelter making videos thanks, richard
If I wanted to go through all that I would just use my H&R 243-
That's neat never thought of using a shot gun in that way. There is a shot tower on the new river on VA it is a state historic site
Dave,
If all you have is round ball, you can melt it and drip the hot lead into a bucket of water; makes some decent shot in a pinch. Not perfect, and the size varies, but it'll do if you've got nothing else.
Whats your thoughts on Black Powder revolvers Dave?
So you can use a round ball with the adapter?..(in modified choke o course). what is the thoughts of using a patched .690 ball?
I would like to take some classes at the Pathfinder school And where's that half finder school located ?
Which size adaptor seats the 209 primer? This is a sweet set up!
I wonder if folding tang adjustable peep site would help with accuracy?
dave ,can you do a video of more in depth on blckpowders and stuff,im new to this and I went to look a powder and there is lots of kinds, thanks jason
Yeah I was incorrect. Thanks for the info and great vid. I should have done more research.
Dave youtube keeps saying there is a problem with the video. It will not play.
Thank you that's what I did I actually closed the web page reset the computer and got back online and it started working. I mistakenly thought that there was a problem with the upload, but thanks for your help.
LOL He said "chewed ball."
will home made black powder work ?? store bought powder is crazy expensive. ??
Dave. This may be a silly question but as your hair and beard are so much longer than when you did your Yurt and Tipi series, could this be regarded as a natural resource. For example beard hair for musket pan cleaning brushes and head hair as tinder?
Pull it and braid it for cordage. I'm serious! It's one of the reasons I grow my hair long.
Dave correct me if I'm wrong but could you use old wheel weights for making shot?
Was you smoking at 5:10?
Heard there was some nasty weather heading your way.. stay safe!
Dave, couldn't you use a pump action just as well as a break open 12 gauge for shooting black powder with a reloaded shell or wit the short lane adapter?
Not with the adapter very easy but yes with reloads if the were crimped or cut to exact length, some pumps are picky
cool, thank you
Has anyone used chewed balls in a ball block? Wouldnt think it make much difference, but if you patch in the block it ought to fit the same, Reckon?
would the round ball work in a rifled barrel like a h&r tracker?
Dave nice video since you started with the single shot 12 development it taught me a lot on its versatility and I will be doing the same thing because it makes sense but I do have a question it might be stupid might not be but when you load the 12 with that adaptor it's powder, wading, shot, wading correct? You could prime the gun first in this case as the H&R has a cross bar safety mech but the powder is course enough it will not fall through the whole if you are using an Equivelant like Pyrodex
Stoney Lonsome Buy a book...... blackpowder is very forgiving compared to the stuff that I use to reload cartridges.
Heck I just picked up a Walker replica yester day and plan on using it for carry when bow hunting as it is more powerful then a 44 magnum.
What shotgun is tjat i have a herrington and richards trooper 20 guage model i can change barels on it i have a 30-30 barel and a 22 hornet barel i can get a 12 guage barel to so i was just woundering it it was the same gun
