I have learned so much from your videos and have implemented many things into my long distance hiking adventures like use of toggles, knots, loops, making tinder, making knives, improvising on the fly, so many things. Thank you.
Thanks for these videos, Dave. I don't know if you read my other post asking for something on these subjects, but I'd like to offer a trick I learned (and expanded on) as thanks: One can keep their water warm with a cozy made from newspaper & wrapped in duct tape, they can also add aluminum foil or chip bags for extra effect.
Great video, I've seen many times how people make their bed rolls and carry them like a backpack, but that tip with a flap that covers the top is a first time for that I see this. Great tip Thanks! -Matej
Thanks Dave for another fine video. Are there any tricks to cutting a twin wool blanket in half to use as a shard? Which dimension to cut in half, best way to hem the cut edge, etc?
The pillow bag can also be converted into a hood to put over your head if you hold the bag so that the open end is facing down, and then take one of the top corners and push it into the bag towards the opposite top corner. The top corners then become the back of the hood. This not only creates 2 protective layers, but you can also stuff debris in between the layers for more insulation if needed. If the pillow bag is made of wool then it will provide even more warmth during cold weather.
scotty kinder : he mentioned you in the last video too! Could you give some dimensions on the bed sleeve. It looks to be about 7’ long.. and I guess a 6’ wide piece of canvas material sewn over? Thanks
Many years ago 40+ I motorcycle camped. I used my sleeping bag and a mil-spec. poncho only, set up as a bivy system or the poncho over a picnic table cover depending on the weather. No fire, slept soundly. Have adapted the same system for the use in a pickup bed system or ground system that works very well. How did you make the browse bed?
Dear David. as always a helpful video. did you notice the wired color temperature changes in this one scene? most likely due to changes in lightning. you may want to check if your setting for the white balance is still correct and suitable for the environment you are filming in. Hopefully this tip will help you. Very appreciated what you provide us. thank you a lot.
Making that browse bed would be a cool build for a project at the gathering. Constructing that whole shelter would be for that matter. Maybe a different shelter class each year of the gathering. Just a thought.
Hey Dave, I love your videos and I've watched o real load of them by now. And I would like to ask, if possible, to add the scientific names of animals and plants, specially plants in the video's description so we can relate that to our native language names to address the knowledge you're passing on. Thank you very much!!!
What sort of material is the 'bed', and how is it constructed ? ... is it just oilcloth as well with a triple (or so) stitched seam? ... Even wonder if you could shave off quite some weight by making the browse bed out of parachute like material (possibly reinforced in 5 place by stichting some 10cm folds together, if it would need reinforcing), then take a fairly normal normal type sleeping bag (rated 0~5C or so), add a silk liner, and one of those thermo bivvy's, and a 7by7 re-useable space blanket (if they'd come in that size). If said space blanket would have 5 or 7 grommets on two opposing ends, one could even weave some para-cord through them (with a knot on one end) and 'singe' is underneath you to create a tunnel and reflect heat from the bottom as well (or tug it in underneath you). Would basically be the same system but in a more modern setup...
Make a how-to video on this bed system. I tried making one over the weekend and had a bunch of issues that I couldn't figure out, especially when it came to putting the bed on the tripods.
Dave !! Last Summer I was camping with my freands , and one of my freand managed to break wooden handle of his axe. Well we all was trying to replace this handle , but we all fail to get broken handle out of axe head. Do you know any tricks how to free axe head from broken handle on the field ??
Might be spelling it wrong but I would love to get one of those wool ankorak hoodies $500 bills or a Hudson Bay 4point wool blanket at like $400 guess I’ll have to find goodwill stores near wealthy neighborhoods I hear they have no idea what they are giving to goodwill and neither does goodwill probably get em both for $50 if u can find them city people don’t care about quality wool for the most part and wouldn’t know quality wool if they saw it wish me luck unless I can have yours😁😘.
Hello Dave, not related to this video and I know they're only a small percentage of your channel I was wondering about the upcoming gun video ban here on RUclips? Are you going to stop posting those altogether, though I hope not, or do you plan on posting those to another site? And, of course, if so, which site?
Hey Dave, I've been reading Nessmuk's book and I think his shanty-tent a bit complicated to put together. Could you make a video on that structure and showing a fast/simple way to put it up?
Canvas drop cloth used for painting will work if it is treated. You can also buy used canvas tarps from U-Haul etc for cheap that are large enough to do the same.
I have learned so much from your videos and have implemented many things into my long distance hiking adventures like use of toggles, knots, loops, making tinder, making knives, improvising on the fly, so many things. Thank you.
I like the blankets and canvas materials. The primitive pack is cool. Thanks

Alabama Bushcrafters
That was excellent!!!
How would you go about securing your cook kit and other items to that?
Or I guess they would be inside?
Great Idea. You can always add extra clothes to the inside as you roll it up. Love it Thanks
Awesome video . Thank you for your teachings . Where can i get those blankets?
:13 "Not this past weekend because we had a hangin out here." Huh! 😱 Terrific video, thanks.

Dave, love it. My problem would be doing that in a driving rainstorm. Granted, wait it out..... then pack up. Not always an option. Peace ✌️
Traditional is a sacrifice, the old timers made it through as can we
Another great video, thumps up. Thanks for sharing. All the Best
Great demo. I really like that flap idea! Thanks again for the kind words.
scotty kinder : he mentioned you in the last video too! Could you give some dimensions on the bed sleeve. It looks to be about 7’ long.. and I guess a 6’ wide piece of canvas material sewn over? Thanks

Nice video Dave!
Dude :}
Nothing beats wool blankets.
Maybe I missed it. Can you talk a little about the material of the mattress tube and where you got it?
Chuck Hedges : one of his comments says it’s a canvas tube 12oz. 7feet long by 60in wide
great info, love your videos
@ 1:24 "my, stuffed animal I still sleep with..." Great video. Sincerely appreciate this channel!
I like that flap over the end tip, good one...
Make a how-to video on this bed system. I tried making one over the weekend and had a bunch of issues that I couldn't figure out, especially when it came to putting the bed on the tripods.
Charlie Altvater : I’m planning to try making one also.. what did you use as the bed sleeve (brow canvas)??
What went wrong?
Any idea of when the canvas sleeve will be available for purchase?
Dave !! Last Summer I was camping with my freands , and one of my freand managed to break wooden handle of his axe.
Well we all was trying to replace this handle , but we all fail to get broken handle out of axe head.

You're the man brother I wish I had a quarter of your knowledge
You the Bush Master. 👍👍🌳
Do you guys sell the "browse bed" sleeve? I enjoyed the video, and it's a very interesting idea for a shelter design.
Your packing is very much like what we did with our American Civil war kit using our gum blanket on the outside.
Who the hell disliked this? Great video Dave as always.
Nice use of the diamond hitch .
Thats classic, nice pack frame.
Kephart must be looking down right now and smiling.
Very cool setup, thank you. Corporals corner sent me to subscribe
Hey Dave don't you put that in like in a modern-day of conversion of it it be cool on your website
nice video
When was this pack frame popular?
Might be spelling it wrong but I would love to get one of those wool ankorak hoodies $500 bills or a Hudson Bay 4point wool blanket at like $400 guess I’ll have to find goodwill stores near wealthy neighborhoods I hear they have no idea what they are giving to goodwill and neither does goodwill probably get em both for $50 if u can find them city people don’t care about quality wool for the most part and wouldn’t know quality wool if they saw it wish me luck unless I can have yours😁😘.
That was pretty awesome.
I went color blind lol great vid:)
Nice 👍

Why did you take the silky saw video down?
I am prepping to do a complete review on several models and want a better extensive video for the channel
have possum will travel ... :)
I like the integrated bead with a roof idea, very minimal.
How do you make the stuff bed? What size is it?
Canvas tube 12oz, 7' long and 60" wide
David Canterbury Thank you sir
Love you vids
Hey Dave, I've been reading Nessmuk's book and I think his shanty-tent a bit complicated to put together. Could you make a video on that structure and showing a fast/simple way to put it up?
I hope to come to the pathfinder gathering.
David Caterbury please don't format the videos in a picture frame.
I have a hard enough time seeing it full frame THANKS
One question where do you get your paracord???
did . . .did he say they had a hanging last weekend at 0:13?
Informative, next time try manual white balance setup instead of auto white balance on Your camera or phone.
The top flap is genius
Also mascot opossum ❤️
hola David q tal
Wow.
How do you get the wool to not be so itchy. I touch wool and it's like poison ivy to me.
I be damn. Thanks!
This video gets a thumbs up
Yes it is, it's a character from The Twilight Zone ''To serve man''
ahh smart!
Now That's camping!
That canvas would weigh 50 lbs
Actually the tarp weight 5.7lbs
That tarp is ok for those who can afford it, but those on a tight budget can't, so what do they do?
Laura Jane Aungst you can make your own oil cloth tarps if you know basic sewing and have a place to soak canvas.
Canvas drop cloth used for painting will work if it is treated. You can also buy used canvas tarps from U-Haul etc for cheap that are large enough to do the same.
Use plastic and shiver, stay home and save your pennies, or keep doing what you have been doing .
Save your pennies.
