EXCELLENT VIDEO,EVEN HELPED ME INSTALLED MY NEW ROKU STREAMING STICK WHILE VIEWING YOUR VIDEO SIDE BY SIDE(YOU HAVE BETTER STEP BY STEP INSTRUCTIONS) INSTALLATION TOOK 15-20 MIN. & WENT SEAMLESSLY & VERY IMPRESS WITH THE SPEED/CONNECTION & DID NOT NOTICED ANY LAGGING, THANKS TO YOUR VIDEO
Hey I got this Roku streaming stick, this is going to be fun. Anyway I just want to tell that you are a great teacher on how to set it up. Really easy too. I thought it was going to be complicating like setting up some kind of cable or programing cable/internet. With the high prices of the cable tv, I just want to thank Roku. You both Rock! Thanks again.
+Robin Marchand You are most welcome. I still think the streaming stick is a great value. I am sure you will enjoy it. I still do. Thanks for watching.
Great job, dude! Rather lengthy but was need for all that info and live demo. Thanks! Was thinking about getting one for my wife's tv in the bedroom. You convinced me! Thanks again!
She does love it! More than me now! Lol. She likes that it has Facebook on it too. It wasn't difficult to set up, just had to go back and forth to the computer to enter info, passwords, etc. Glad I bought it! Thanks again, Rich!
UK version: Have now got my Roku 3500eu streaming stick and I must say so far I am very happy with it, so simple to use and now my standard HD ready TV is now a smart one, supports surround sound which is working fine on my setup. Streaming movies (no buffering) and great to have BBC iPlayer, 4oD, Demand 5, Netflix, RUclips and NowTV. Loads of other Apps as well.
I had a Roku XD and it worked pretty well. Then it started to act strange. Made me think I needed a new on so bought a Roku stick. It made me go over my internet cap by $30 to $50 . I could not afford that. I am a Amazon person, have a older Kindle Fire which are known now as Fires. I decided to go to Amazon Fire TV. It is wonderful and has ton's more channels and has a quad processor unlike the best. I worked with the Roku tech's several times and they could not help me and I could not get my money back. I used to love Roku. Check them all out. I love Amazon Fire TV. Give 'em a try but I would go with Fire TV. The price is good and product great.
That's great. BTW if a Roku stick put you over your internet cap would not a quad core dual band wifi Amazon Fire TV do the same quicker? I suggest you go with an unlimited internet package for streaming without worry. I have both the Roku 3 and the streaming stick and love them both. I have tortured them endlessly and have not had a problem with either one and I was an early adopter of both so I have seen them grow over time. I may give the Amazon Fire TV a shot to see if there is a real benefit there. Both Roku and Amazon Fire TV rate equally highly on Amazons customer reviews but Gary Busey is as my daughter says "kind of scary". LOL Thanks
Now at day 14 of owning and watching streaming content without issue. This is truly a great value. It's a very good first streaming device or an upgrade path to an older Roku or other streaming device. Can't say enough good things about it.
Richard (beloved of God) thanks for the prompt reply. You are correct about the copyright and I agree no one should violate the laws even when we think this law should not be obeyed. as we then become a nation where everyone does what seems right in his or her own opinion.Who decides? So if I decide to do away with you or you me and justify it, well... But we do copy things such as the Turner Classic movies or other old movies that we are sure are no longer copyright protected. We are aware that a few of the real old ones have retained copyrights. We take the old ones VCR or DVD when we travel as many hotels, motels have such poor TV choices. Once you watch the local news for the weather there is nothing else to watch. Many mom and pop places have tvs that do not have Roku ready and do not have HDMI slots. As a matter of fact, we have five tvs and only two have HDMI slots and none are Roku ready. So for the limited purpose for us techy challenged people, and also for traveling in certain areas of the country where internet comes only over the phone modem. So, where can I learn of the availability of doing limited copying. BUT I will now think more about a Roku stick to take with me. Thanks in advance for future info and remember God loves you.
I am confused ! All the revues of Roku 3 and the stick say they are the only ones with youtube. I have had my Roku HD for a couple of years and it has always had youtube on it.
Hi, Thanks for all the good info. I was using my Laptop to connect to Neflix and send it to my TV. This stick will save my Laptop. I'll go buy one and let you know I it went. Thanks again. Claudette
You will love it. Make sure you check for updates in the settings system updates. They updated the Netflix interface last week and it is way faster. Thanks.
I'm watching your youtube video on my roku 2xd in my bedroom now. Just get twonkybeam and every roku plays everything on youtube. I actually prefer it because you can use a full keyboard and find videos on tab or phone while playing youtube on tv
@Misael Cordoba Here is what is available on History www.history.com/roku-channel And here is the Disney stuff www.roku.com/channels/#search/disney/by-popular You can search the channels on wwwRoku.com
Thoughtful review - i have been Roku fan for a long time but learned couple of new things from your video. One thing you missed, it comes with a new version of Netflix (which only Roku 3 had so far). How's Netflix channel performance for you? PS. the difference of "roku ready" tv is that its HDMI port is MHL port - meaning port can power Roku Stick 34xx and TV remote can control it by using HDMI-CEC. Might not be the case with model 3500.
I did not go into the Netflix channel because I don't have a subscription and I get into copyright issues when I display movie content on RUclips videos. But thanks for the information. As far as connectivity it does not seem to make a difference whether you plug it into an MHL port or not as far as function which is a plus for me as the HDTV I am going to put it on is not Roku Ready and does not have MHL HDMI port and it works anyway. Thanks for watching.
I have installed Roku Stick. Wow! easy to install and so far seems good. I have for free Netflix, NHL,Sky News. I am a member of Netflix I pay for it every month. So why does it say free? I'll keep you posted . Here in Canada at Walmart it is $63.48 plus tax. My TV is a Toshiba HD with 1080p I plugged in the Roku stick in the HDM and to power it I plugged into the USB on the TV. I thank-you again, because I almost bought a Blue Ray WIFI DVD Player to be able to watch Netflix without having to stream from my Laptop to the TV. Claudette
Great! Netflix usually gives you a free month on Roku but if you are already paying for it you should just put your account info in. I recommend using the power adapter instead of plugging it into your USB port so it doesn't need to boot up every time you turn on your TV. It really does not use very much power anyway and if it is on all the time the updates will happen automatically when it is idle.
Awesome video ! Really explains a lot ,I loved the review and the advices you gave .I still have some questions ,For example , I saw that you had the "Disney Channel " channel or the "History Channel " channel ,those channels here in Dallas ,Texas are in cable ,does that mean if get one of these devices I can see cable content such as those channels ?
Ken Gevon They didn't cheap out anywhere else either. I have been using the 3500R heavy for over a year now without any problems with it what so ever. I have a Roku 3 and I use 3500r as the primary device and don't even notice a difference. Thanks.
Yes you are right and the 3500R is externally powered only. I have a Roku ready TV and it does not power or control the 3500R but who cares? It comes with a power supply and a remote. It works great and is almost as fast (80% or so). So now I am the happy owner of 2 Roku's a 3 and 3500r. Thanks for watching.
my roku won't pick up my wireless network. i enter the password i made the day the At&T guy was here, and that he wrote down on a sheet of paper. My laptop is running on the wifi right now. do i need a "smart" TV to use a Roku? should i hit the reset button?
Richard. I really enjoyed your video.. I just bought the roku stick as of yesterday 5- 10- 2014 from Best buy for the 49.99 price. I haven't set it up yet, no comments on how it performs yet. I have to say that I've watched your video twice, and don't need the manual, I can do it in my sleep LOL. Thanks great Video. But you have me interested in this Plex Sever ?. I will research that on my own.. Again thanks again the video.. JW
Been using it now since March 31 and I have 0 complaints and I have a Roku 3 which I could use instead. So far I have had no need to switch it back. The Plex Server is a great adition to the Roku. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Yes you can move it from one TV to another without setting it up again. The only setting you may have to change is resolution ie if you move it from a 1080P display to 720P but if they are the same resolution you should not have any problem. Thanks
That would be an Uber cool option. Unfortunately it is not an available function. But I can't see why they would not be able to program that function in. I would send Roku an email on that one and see if it is in the works. Thanks.
i have another question. what about other tv's in your house. will they be able to pick up the roku, or will we have to disconnect the stick and take to other rooms, which will not let the guy in the front have access.
Christy Allen The Roku needs to be attached to the TV you are using, so if you want to use on multiple TV's you will need to either buy multiple Roku's or move it from TV to TV. The Roku Streaming Stick 3500R at Amazon: amzn.to/1E45lYs is now on sale for $39.99
Hi Richard, I have surround sound setup, can you tell me, would I have to plug the stick into my Denon AVR surround sound receiver in order to take advantage of this?
Hi , PLEX QUESTION... Now do you still have to have your computer on to run plex?? You know what i mean.. or can you have your pc off and still click it on roku and have no problem with cover art on the movies etc?? They really need that option with Plex...it sucks you always need you computer on . Thanks
My husband and I are considering cancelling cable tv altogether or just keeping the lowest channels on cable. 3 questions. Will I have to upgrade my internet service? It is presently at 12.5 M. We have a flat screen and an older analog. If we just decided to use antennas, how would we switch between Roku and them? You say there are 1,000 channels, but when I went to their site, I only saw a few, and a lot of them want money each time we rent or buy? a movie or show. I don't see how this benefits us if the costs are higher than our cable when all is considered. Are there, actually, great free movies and shows we can watch? Thanks.
12.5 Mb/s is plenty enough bandwidth for this Roku device. I don't pay for cable TV at all. I pay for Hulu, Netflix and Amazon Prime and never run out things to watch. Total cost less than $30 a month. BTW I believe all those services have a free one month trial, so you can try them out and see if you will like it. But it's a matter of what you want to watch too. If you have a show you want to watch that is only broadcast on cable TV and not available on one of the many channel choices available for Roku then a Roku will not give you what you need. This Roku will only work if you have a wifi router and a TV with an HDMI slot. The old analog TV will require a different Roku than this one. I believe the Roku 2 will do (make sure it is compatible at the Roku site). I suggest buying this Roku first and see if you like the experience and go from there. Roku and streaming TV is not the same as cable it is mostly on demand although there are live channels too. Be aware also that you also have access to RUclips and the millions of videos on there with Roku too. I was watching the old TV series Taxi yesterday and having a good laugh for free (I know internet is not free) but other than that there was no fee. There are free movie channels on Roku, like Crackle etc. But it's a matter of what you call a "great" movie. I also connected a TV antenna to my flat panel to watch the 18 FREE local channels available in my area. How you switch tv sources on your TV will differ on most TV's but on mine all I have to do is press the TV source button on my remote. If you want to watch terrestrial TV (broadcast TV) you will need a digital tuner and antenna for your old TV to capture the digital signal out of the air. Most modern flat panel TV's have a digital tuner built in already and all you need is an antenna. Again this depends on where you live as to how many channels will be available. In the end I don't miss the $160.00 a month cable bill I used to pay for. Now I pay for internet $29.00 and about the same for the subscription services I like on Roku.
Richard, Thanks for all the info. I can live with $30 a month. As far as internet goes, my company wants around $54 a month. I would love to only pay $29. We have the converter box and antennas already. I am wondering how much all the set up costs, for Ruku is going to be. There is one channel I really like, on cable. TCM. I like the old classics and want to watch them without commercials. Does Roku have any free channels for that? Your remote has a TV source button? I don't recall seeing that on ours.
Claire Anderson TCM unfortunately is not available on Roku. There are classic TV channels on Roku some are free some are not. Again it is hard for me to recommend or not recommend what to watch as your taste in TV will surely not be my taste in TV. It's very subjective. You can view the Roku channel line up here: www.roku.com/channels#!browse/movies-and-tv/by-popular As far as your TV equipment goes I can't comment on it. There is an endless amount of different remotes and TVs. This Roku requires an HDMI port and a WIFI router. If your TV does not have an HDMI then you will need to get a compatible Roku for your TV (They have a compatible Roku for any TV). Thanks
I have a quick question, I just purchased one of these streaming sticks today, and am having a problem with the youtube,,,,it loads up just fine, but when I click on a video, i get sound, but there is no picture, just a blank purple screen....do you know how i can fix this? I did go to the youtube/pair and did all that installation...I just cant seem to get it to work....thanks in advance
Check to see if you have the latest firmware in settings and update it if you don't . Other than that I would try a reboot or a factory reset to see if it is some sort of settings glitch. Thanks.
Awesome. I haven't done it yet, but I'm guessing I can hook my laptop up to my TV via HDMI if I really want to see home video or pictures on it so I don't really need a Roku 3. I may get the stick instead.
Yes you can do that. You can also share the media through Windows media player as well. The Roku Media Player channel can connect to your computer using the Windows Media Player too. I would have put it into the video but I thought that the technical aspect was beyond the scope of the video. I may make a video on that alone. Really for $49.99 you can beat this device for streaming. You can buy the Roku Stick 3500R at Amazon: amzn.to/1fTWAsJ. Thanks for watching.
Richard Lloyd A video on the Media Player would be great. I don't hear anybody I know talk about it and I think it's because a lot people don't know much if anything about what it can do or how to use it. Just like I don't.
MrWhiltetail Here you go Sir. Thanks for the suggestion. How to share your Video, Music and Pictures from Windows Media Player to a Roku device. ruclips.net/video/Q23hwXig_qU/видео.html
Richard Lloyd hi,Richard what do you recommend better roku stick or roku 3,also how these roku devices stacks up again the amazon fire tv?.Thanks in advance.
One thing. Do not disable your SSID broadcasting. This produces a much better security risk unless you want to manually connect every time you turn your computer on or any WiFi device. This is because someone can easily spoof your access point. I studied this extensively when I was going for my CCNA Wireless certification. You can use MAC filtering, WPA2, and all that good stuff but do not disable your SSID.
None of my computers have any problem connecting automatically to WIFI with SSID broadcasting disabled. Is the pineapple attack capable of breaking WPA2 with a huge password with special characters, numbers and capital letters? Thanks
That's not the issue Richard. When you disable your SSID, you are allowing potential spoofers to broadcast another SSID say at the air port or near your home and potentially you could connect to the "spoofed" access point. The only way to get rid of this security risk is by unchecking the box "connect even when this network is not boradcasting
www.nyu.edu/its/wireless/images/seven_05.jpg Look at this picture. Because you are automatically connecting every time your computer boots up and your SSID broadcast is disabled, notice there is a warning message by this check box. The SSID is unencrypted and disabling the broadcast actually makes the hacking problem worse.
So would I be able to use the youtube channel and search for a video from the tv (no use of computer or app) and play it? It's for my mom and she doesn't have a computer or smart phone. But she wants to use youtube.
I have a roku ready pioneer receiver and there is a setting in the menu to turn on the power to the hdmi port when I plug in the roku or leave the power off to plug in a non powered hdmi device, thats probably all you will have to do is activate the power on your roku ready tv.
This is the 3500R and it is made to be compatible with any HDMI TV. There is another streaming stick the Roku 3400M Streaming Stick (Roku-Ready Version, requires MHL) amzn.to/1wT3irj if you have a Roku Ready TV with the MHL port you can use that stick and it will take power from the port and allow the remote on your TV to control it. The 3500R to my knowledge does not have that functionality. Thanks
Here is a tutorial on that ruclips.net/video/De6PvePfxtc/видео.html the option to mirror is available on the Roku 3 and the streaming stick 3500 but I am not sure if it is available on the others and remember it is beta. Thanks.
Christy Allen Yes you do have to have an internet connection to use the Roku but you don't need a dual WIFI router to do so. A Roku 3 Roku 3 at Amazon: amzn.to/13GzQqr can be plugged into your network using Ethernet or WIFI but the Roku Streaming Stick 3500R at Amazon: amzn.to/1fTWAsJ requires a WIFI router. I use the TP-Link WR841N router at Amazon: amzn.to/Z3AptL here is my video review on it ruclips.net/video/zr3nZclaaLI/видео.html BTW it costs $19.99 delivered.
I am not sure how you would stream to it without the Internet. It is possible if you have a media server like Plex setup somewhere in your home. Thanks.
Thanks
How do you remove a movie you have already watched? I watch RUclips and don't want to have to go through the watched ones on my screen over and over again. Thanks for the set up vid.
Can you use the Roku Android app to search, cast, and control Amazon instant video to the Roku Streaming Stick? I want to use it for the one feature my Chromecast is missing as an Amazon Prime user.
If by cast you mean queue a movie up on Amazon instant video and have it play on your TV yes. You can search, queue and control Amazon Instant video using the Roku Android app and a Roku Streaming Stick 3500R. At Amazon: amzn.to/1fTWAsJ
Richard Lloyd Thanks for the response. By cast I mean to use an Android app to search for an Amazon Prime program and get it playing on the Roku stick. Basically, what I'm looking for is the same functionality that the Netflix Android app has for Chromecast.
Richard Lloyd I purchased one yesterday and it's working pretty well so far. Unfortunately, it doesn't have the Roku app functionality I'm looking for that you see when using Chromecast with Android apps for Netflix and RUclips (i.e. play on phone, scrub video, etc.). However, it appears the only way that's possible is with a Kindle Fire and Amazon Fire TV. I would say, though, that between the functionality that is provided and the Plex app, I'm satisfied by the purchase. Thanks again.
Matt Lathrum I don't think you can beat it for $49.99. Eventually these devices will all merge into one device. I have been watching the evolution for two years now. I may buy the Chromecast just to check out the functionality you are speaking about.
You can use the search feature to see all the channels but the easiest way is to go to the official channel guide on the Roku site : www.roku.com/channels#!browse/movies-and-tv/by-popular Here is another www.rokuguide.com/channels There are also private channel lists available too : mkvxstream.blogspot.com/2013/03/roku-private-channels-2013-roku-channel.html You can use Google to find more. Thanks
I am a bit of a novice who has been laid off work. I am currently using Clear TV which is really good but I have seen this Roku thing and like the idea but have a few questions. (1) what is the difference been the version you are demoing and the Roku 3 (2) once you this and install it are there any other fees involved e.g. can you just watch TV without any monthly fees which version would you guys out there recommend. Any other information you guys out there can share would be more welcome. Thanks in advance everyone
Thanks for the question. I am going to have to make a video on what the Roku is, how it works, how it's like TV and how it is not. The Roku is a streaming player that hooks up to your HD TV. What you get is 1000+ "channels" They can be live feeds like a local channel (Not that many local channels available but you can get those using a television antenna) or ESPN (available also but with a paid subscription) or they can be like a DVR channel where you can pick what you want to watch like (Hulu, Amazon, Netflix (paid subscription) or Crackle and many others that are free (paid by advertising). So it's a matter of what you want to pay for and not. I like being able to watch what I want (mostly) when I want. But realize that I pay for Hulu ($7.99 month) Amazon Prime ($90 a year with many other perks on Amazon.com) and (Netflix $7.99) But I don't pay for cable TV. Like I said I need to make a video to really explain it all. I hope that helped a bit.
It sometimes happens when you use a video cam to video an LCD display. I also think the auto focus was having difficaulty. The actual display is rock solid and beautifu. Thanks.
i have a surround sound system but it doesnt indicated it....its not wireless and it is connected to my dvd player...is there a way to connect it to my roku?
Excellent Video! Just one question, Can you install the google chrome app in Roku Stick? I was wondering if I can navigate through internet with this. Thank you!
There are hardware and slight speed differences but if you don't care about those differences I would say no. I do miss the ability to plug ear buds into the remote on the stick but is that worth paying an extra $50? The only thing I could see is that Roku3 may have a longer upgrade and support path because of it's increased CPU speed. You have to realize that technology advances and gets cheaper every year and features increase too. Again it's something you need determine for yourself.
My question is how do you toggle from Roku to your TV...go to the source HDMI or can I just unplug the stick...(maybe not a good idea..would I have to reinstall) Loved your video. SORRY: CORRECTION: HOW DO YOU TOGGLE FROM ROKU TO YOUR TV BACK AND FORTH.
Thank you. You just toggle through your inputs or HDMI ports. I keep it dedicated to one of the HDMI ports and powered on all the time so I don't have to go through a boot sequence when I want to use it.
Richard Lloyd sorry to bug you again...I understand that but I'm not clear like when I turn off roku and then later when I turn on my TV how does it know which HDMI I want to go to...do I search for my source button and select...& if I unplug the koku will I have to do it all over again..I have a smartTV and a satellite. Thanking you in advance for your patience.
angie dempsey Not sure why you have to unplug it or power it down? I just plug it into one of my HDMI ports and leave it plugged in and on and I use my remote to change the input source if I need to look at something else. It's not a issue at all for me. Thanks.
Though I have not done this (i did use my credit card) they say it's possible to skip the process. Here is a link to the discussion www.reddit.com/r/Roku/comments/1yqz30/can_you_activate_a_roku_without_a_credit_card/ Thanks.
Very nice video. I just bought the stick a few days ago but after it said it loaded 100% of the update software- gave me error code 011. I wonder if you Richard or someone else knows what this could be from. I've Googled it and some are saying Roku support (based in India) couldn't help them. I'm using TP-Link router with a Zoom cable modem. Thanks.
This error is usually the cause of a network connectivity issue. How far away from your router is your router from your Roku? Do you have a computer connected to your network using WIFI? What speed is your connection supposed to be? What speed are you getting on your computer? Go to speedtest.net to test it. Thanks
Richard Lloyd Router is within two feet from the stick. I looked on the Amazon page for customer feedback and some mentioned to check the router firewall is off. I will find out how to do that. As an aside, some suggested calling support in morning to get an American tech.
Richard Lloyd Success! After going into security I disabled the firewall. Per another suggestion I changed encryption to just AES. Hopefully after changing the settings back I won't have any problems adding new channels.
Richard Lloyd HELLO I HAVE A DIFFICULTY WITH THIS ROKU 3 AND THE SUPPORT TEAM TRY TO SELL ME $499.99 FIREWALL NETWORK APP. I DON'T REALLY HAPPY WITH THIS AT ALL, CAN YOU HELP IT SEEM THAT YOU KNOW WHAT YOU TALKING ABOUT.
Do I need to purchase a router, It has to be connected to the internet , right? or is it just a plug into the back of the tv and power from wall socket, and let it boot up. no one mentions the need for arouter in the videos I have seen. I am new to this type of product. thanks....
HOOTERHOTTIES Yes it does require an internet connection to stream content. So yes a router is required. There is a ton of free content but there are also subscription based (pay for) content like Amazon, Hulu and Netflix.
I just bought this and I am loving it very much very cool and lots of free HD content on it and web chanels I would useally vist but on my new "50 1080p HD tv it looks good and not bad for the price and it comes with a remote ☺😊
Yes it is a very good value and over 1500 free chanels on it and it comes with a remote not even the apple tv comes with a remote or Google chromcast doesn't even have a remote . It is a very good value and free chanels and if something is isn't free you call roku to take it off☺😊
+Henryswift 117 This is not a cable box. It is a streaming device that will give you access to streaming services like Hulu, Netflix, Amazon, Sling, Crackle etc. Most of the movie services are pay for but some like Crackle are free. Sling will give you access to cable channels but this is also a subscription based service ($20 per month) Here is the Roku channel round up channelstore.roku.com/browse/movies-and-tv/popularity Thanks
Maybe you can help me & maybe not. 1st question...I was watching Netflix and all of a sudden it stopped. Roku had cut me off,all my channels gone. They kept asking me to go to my internet and put the code in. So I went to the link on my computer and put the access code they gave me. Everything went back to normal. But Why???? it did that. 2nd question....I wanted to quit with my TV cable company but these channels I cant find on Roku Stick. How can I get or can I get these channels.??? Fox Burlington WFFF....NBC Plattsburg WPTZ...CBS Burlington WCAX...ABC Burlington WVNY & CBC News Network...CTV Montreal CFCF12... Global Montreal CKMI Live streaming I would like ..like on Cable. Thanks ahead a time..Enjoy your day. Claudette
More than likely it was asking you to register with Roku.com. Local channels are currently hit and miss with more being added regularly streamfree.tv/ I recommend purchasing an over the air antenna for local HDTV streamfree.tv/over-the-air/
Sorry but it only connects through WIFI. Fortunately you can buy a good WIFI router for $20.00. This is the router I am using and I will be making a video reviewing it soon. Here it is at Amazon: amzn.to/YXELCS You will also need a fast internet connection at 1.5 Mbs but I recommend 5 Mbs or more. My internet connection speed is 15 Mbs. You can check your speed internet speed at www.speedtest.net
Here is what you require to watch the WWE Network www.wwe.com/watch-wwe-network-on-roku Here are what you require to watch MLB on Roku mlb.mlb.com/mlb/subscriptions/index.jsp?product=roku WWE and MLB don't list the 3500R but they do list lesser models. I installed the MLB channel and though I do not have a subscription it allowed me to watch the "Free game of the day" in full HD. Other content would require a subscription but it worked on 3500R so I can't see why it would not work. WWE channel installed but would not let me see any content without a subscription. Again I have no idea why it would not work but I can't confirm it 100% as it requires a subscription to see any content. I would call both of them to verify it 100%
Hokagevigo It's a great device. I have the 3500R Roku streaming stick Amazon: amzn.to/1fTWAsJ and the Roku 3 Amazon: amzn.to/13GzQqr and it is seriously hard to tell the difference between the two in performance or features. The 3500r is a great value. Enjoy.
Hokagevigo Yes they will. You will have to connect it to the WIFI network that is local to where you plug it in once you do that it's good to go. Remember you need a high speed Internet connection. Roku says 1Mbps or higher but if you want HD 1080p you need closer to 5Mbps download speed. I am favoring the stick over the Roku3 at this point but I go back and forth between the two. I can hardly tell the difference between them in performance. Thanks.
Explains when bought one earlier this year. Why a date read 2015 cause they are newest things out now.Never though they were new as TV HDMI been around a long time
Karlo Modrić There is no official Twitch channel on Roku....yet. But there is an "unofficial" channel. Here are the details forums.roku.com/viewtopic.php?f=28&t=55866
@Richard Lloyd - Thanks for your informative and detailed review. I just purchased the Roku Streaming Stick this week to add more viewing options in addition to my Apple TV. So far, I'm enjoying this device very much and I like the fact that it has access over 1000+ channels. Here's some photos of the unboxing and short summary: plus.google.com/106901104639643981829/posts/8uMMBa1NTKG
This was definitely NOT fun. My son bought one of these at Kohls with his last Christmas gift card. After we connected it to the TV and put the batteries in the remote (yes, they were installed correctly), we saw the bouncing "ROKU" on the TV screen, then the "Let's Get Started". However, when we tried to press OK to continue and/or navigate the menu to continue the installation, the selection on the TV wouldn't move at all to let us continue. It was just stuck. Not sure if a light of some sort is supposed to light up on the remove to indicate that it is working and paired up with the device. He got disgusted and took it back to Kohls for a refund. He said he'd rather just buy a new "low-tech" pair of shoes. So dissappointed in the failure rate of electronics lately.
Sorry for your troubles. Did your son call Roku support. I believe you need to hold the pairing button down for 3 seconds to force the pair: Remote pairing instructions - (if remote is unresponsive/unpaired) Roku 2 XS model 3100 (Enhanced game remote) Roku 2 model 2720 (Enhanced remote with headphone jack) Roku 3 model 4200 (Enhanced remote with headphone jack) Roku Streaming Stick HDMI version model 3500 (Standard remote) If your remote stops responding, try removing and reinserting the batteries first: Open the battery compartment. Remove and reinsert the batteries, following the correct battery orientations. If that doesn't fix the problem, try pairing the remote again: Open the battery compartment and locate the pairing button. Press and hold the pairing button for at least 3 seconds. (front LEDs will blink) Power cycle the Roku player. (unplug the power connector and plug back in) During the start up process, the Roku remote will automatically pair to your Roku player. (the front LEDs will stop flashing) roku.zendesk.com/entries/22282324-Roku-remotes-overview#location_repair Thanks
HI! I updated and found lots of free shows etc. I also went into Netflix and I used my username and password. I also went into settings and put it at 1080p OK I'll plug it in the wall outlet, thanks
william patterson I just made a video on the new RUclips Roku Channel here: ruclips.net/video/J2yS3ltVQxU/видео.html and yes the menu is now to the very left of the screen. I actually like it. Thanks.
Greetings in the Name of Jesus. Okay you said to ask here. We are thinking of purchasing Roku. Is there a way to plug Roku into a VCR DVD Recorder so that you can tape or copy movies as they come through and then have them later to view, if you so desire? Thank you and remember God loves you.
The streaming stick plugs into an HDMI port on your television so I am not sure if you could output that out to a VCR. BTW copying copyrighted material from any source without legal permission is against the law. Not sure why you would want to record the content anyway as you can stream on demand any movie on any channel of a Roku device at any time legally. There really is no need to copy it for later viewing. If you want to watch it later just go to the channel, choose it and play it on demand. Thanks
Thanks in advance for future info and remember God loves you.Richard Lloyd
Hugh James This Roku requires a HDMI port but there are other Roku devices that can connect to regular TV's with analog inputs. The Roku 2 plugs into virtually any TV here is a link to it at Amazon:Roku 2 Streaming Player (Black) (Roku 2720R ) amzn.to/1CdjC46 if you are going to take the Roku with you, you will have to consider how your are going to connect it to the internet on the go. As well you also need to understand that you require 1MB/s to stream at the minimum resolution.
Great! Glad I could help.
That's great. You can buy the Roku Stick 3500R here at Amazon: amzn.to/1fTWAsJ Thanks for watching.
Just got one at Best Buy - $49.99. Gonna set it up today. Thanks again!
gerry cox-brooks That's great. I am sure you will enjoy it. Use mine every day and love it. Tell us what you think when you get it all set up. Thanks.
She does love it! More than me now! Lol. She likes that it has Facebook on it too. It wasn't difficult to set up, just had to go back and forth to the computer to enter info, passwords, etc. Glad I bought it! Thanks again, Rich!
gerry cox-brooks My pleasure. Thanks for watching and sharing.
Thank you for your comments. I must agree. It's a great value. I don't think you can get a better value in a Roku or any streaming device.
LOL Thanks
Excellent and helpful review for myself in the UK. Due for release on the 18/04/2014.
Now at day 14 of owning and watching streaming content without issue. This is truly a great value. It's a very good first streaming device or an upgrade path to an older Roku or other streaming device. Can't say enough good things about it.

I will have to try this and see how it works. Thanks.
I will watch your video again. I'm sure I still have things to do in programming the stick.
Play away!
My TV is a Toshiba HD with 1080p
I plugged in the Roku stick in the HDM and to power it I plugged into the USB on the TV.
Can i use a Roku device in Nigeria
Awesome video ! Really explains a lot ,I loved the review and the advices you gave .I still have some questions ,For example , I saw that you had the "Disney Channel " channel or the "History Channel " channel ,those channels here in Dallas ,Texas are in cable ,does that mean if get one of these devices I can see cable content such as those channels ?
Thanks for making this video, you explained things well.
My pleasure. I am glad I could help. Thanks for watching.
Nice of them to give you Duracell batteries out the box. That's pretty rare. Usually most companies give you cheap batteries with remotes.
Ken Gevon They didn't cheap out anywhere else either. I have been using the 3500R heavy for over a year now without any problems with it what so ever. I have a Roku 3 and I use 3500r as the primary device and don't even notice a difference. Thanks.
I think the 3400 model roku sticks are for the roku ready tvs, where it get power through HDMI only.
Thanks for the excellent review. I do have one question, can I switch this from one tv to another tv in my house without setting it up all over again?
Yes you can move it from one TV to another without setting it up again. The only setting you may have to change is resolution ie if you move it from a 1080P display to 720P but if they are the same resolution you should not have any problem. Thanks
Richard Lloyd That's great news. I love the idea that I don't have to buy two. Thank you so much for replying.
elainejan My pleasure. Thank you for watching.
If I use a mini iPad as a remote, can I use headphones on the iPad
in the same way they work on the Roku 3 remote?
That would be an Uber cool option. Unfortunately it is not an available function. But I can't see why they would not be able to program that function in. I would send Roku an email on that one and see if it is in the works. Thanks.
Thanks Richard.
My pleasure.
Great video!
Thank you.
i have another question. what about other tv's in your house. will they be able to pick up the roku, or will we have to disconnect the stick and take to other rooms, which will not let the guy in the front have access.
Christy Allen The Roku needs to be attached to the TV you are using, so if you want to use on multiple TV's you will need to either buy multiple Roku's or move it from TV to TV. The Roku Streaming Stick 3500R at Amazon: amzn.to/1E45lYs is now on sale for $39.99
Great video. Thanks for the info.
My pleasure. Thanks for watching.
Hi Richard, I have surround sound setup, can you tell me, would I have to plug the stick into my Denon AVR surround sound receiver in order to take advantage of this?
I use the digital optical audio out from my LCD panel into sound processor.
Hi , PLEX QUESTION...
Now do you still have to have your computer on to run plex?? You know what i mean.. or can you have your pc off and still click it on roku and have no problem with cover art on the movies etc?? They really need that option with Plex...it sucks you always need you computer on . Thanks
+carlsbadtuber The Plex server does need to be on to access the content on it. Thanks.
You can view the Roku channel line up here: www.roku.com/channels#!browse/movies-and-tv/by-popular
As far as your TV equipment goes I can't comment on it.
Richard Lloyd You are the man!
plug the USB cord into the rear of your cable box USB port. In almost all cable boxes the usb ports remain on even when the box has been turned off.
Thanks for the suggestion.
Yes, it is a total solution for RUclips. She will have to navigate the search with the remote which is tedious.
Thanks
so If I have xbmc on my laptop and play a movie can i watch that movie on my TV with the roku device?
Here is a tutorial on that ruclips.net/video/De6PvePfxtc/видео.html the option to mirror is available on the Roku 3 and the streaming stick 3500 but I am not sure if it is available on the others and remember it is beta. Thanks.
do you have to have internet connection to run the roku, either one. If you do, do you have to have a dual wifi router
I use the TP-Link WR841N router at Amazon: amzn.to/Z3AptL here is my video review on it ruclips.net/video/zr3nZclaaLI/видео.html BTW it costs $19.99 delivered.
thank you so much for your help
Christy Allen You are most welcome. Thanks for watching.
What about if I don't have a internet.would it still works
I am not sure how you would stream to it without the Internet. It is possible if you have a media server like Plex setup somewhere in your home. Thanks.
Mine always has power to it even with the receiver off, not sure about your tv. thanks for the video.
Matt Lathrum Yes Sir. The Roku Android app will do this for you.
Still dont see the 1000 plus channel and were can find what is there
You can use the search feature to see all the channels but the easiest way is to go to the official channel guide on the Roku site : www.roku.com/channels#!browse/movies-and-tv/by-popular
Here is another www.rokuguide.com/channels
There are also private channel lists available too : mkvxstream.blogspot.com/2013/03/roku-private-channels-2013-roku-channel.html
You can use Google to find more. Thanks
Sweet
donald laisure Very sweet. Thanks
Is the same if build in tv
I didnt get remore with tv
is there an amount to pay every month?
Only for premium services like Amazon, Hulu, Netflix etc. Each one of those services is currently under $10.00 a month.
Why is the Video blinking / flaring ?
It sometimes happens when you use a video cam to video an LCD display. I also think the auto focus was having difficaulty. The actual display is rock solid and beautifu. Thanks.
i have a surround sound system but it doesnt indicated it....its not wireless and it is connected to my dvd player...is there a way to connect it to my roku?
I use an optical audio cable from my TV to my surround system. Here is one at Amazon: amzn.to/1CKkNw5
Richard Lloyd thankyou! i tried using the arc hdmi but my home system didnt have arc. so ima pick up a optical auido cable soon!
imfreakinout21 You're welcome. I forgot to mention make sure both your TV and surround system have the optical ports. Thanks
Excellent Video! Just one question, Can you install the google chrome app in Roku Stick? I was wondering if I can navigate through internet with this. Thank you!
+HERNAN BRAVO No you can not install the google chrome app on the Roku stick.
is the roku 3 worth the extra 50 bucks
There are hardware and slight speed differences but if you don't care about those differences I would say no. I do miss the ability to plug ear buds into the remote on the stick but is that worth paying an extra $50? The only thing I could see is that Roku3 may have a longer upgrade and support path because of it's increased CPU speed. You have to realize that technology advances and gets cheaper every year and features increase too. Again it's something you need determine for yourself.
My Roku 3 never came with Duracell, they were some off brand.
Off brands are usually what I get with most devices I buy. Weird that they don't always use the same batteries. Thanks for watching.
Thanks: that's what I thought.
angie dempsey You are welcome.
Thanks.
very helpful, nice guy
+Sanju Paison Thank you very much.
richard lloyd do you really need to give them your credit card information while you're setting up your roku?
Though I have not done this (i did use my credit card) they say it's possible to skip the process. Here is a link to the discussion www.reddit.com/r/Roku/comments/1yqz30/can_you_activate_a_roku_without_a_credit_card/ Thanks.
Richard Lloyd thanks and can you still get channels like hbo, showtime, cinemax and starz without paying monthlyor do you have to pay monthly anyway?
I have a question. Does this come with SlingTV?
+Samantha Cruz Sling TV is available.
Erik Wern Please make sure to update us on your progress.
Richard Lloyd Success! After going into security I disabled the firewall. Per another suggestion I changed encryption to just AES. Hopefully after changing the settings back I won't have any problems adding new channels.
Erik Wern Great! It's been two days is it still working well? Thanks.
Do you have to pay for MatchTv?
+Sebastian Sanchez Yes you do have to pay for it. Here are the instructions www.machtvroku.com/machtv-install/ Thanks.
It is hard to install this roku. Can anyone please help? It doesn't go so easy as in the video clip.
I found it quite straight forward. Where are you having difficulty?
Richard Lloyd HELLO I HAVE A DIFFICULTY WITH THIS ROKU 3 AND THE SUPPORT TEAM TRY TO SELL ME $499.99 FIREWALL NETWORK APP. I DON'T REALLY HAPPY WITH THIS AT ALL, CAN YOU HELP IT SEEM THAT YOU KNOW WHAT YOU TALKING ABOUT.
what else do I need to make this work,,?
Not sure what you are referring to? What does not work for you?
It really is a superior product and a great value. Thanks for commenting and watching.
Yes it is a very good value and over 1500 free chanels on it and it comes with a remote not even the apple tv comes with a remote or Google chromcast doesn't even have a remote . It is a very good value and free chanels and if something is isn't free you call roku to take it off☺😊
RJ LAZCANO Thanks, I am glad you enjoy it. It has changed the way I watch TV. I no longer have cable and I don't miss it at all. Roku on.
if i dont have cable will this give me some cable? and another question , are the movies free?
+Henryswift 117 This is not a cable box. It is a streaming device that will give you access to streaming services like Hulu, Netflix, Amazon, Sling, Crackle etc. Most of the movie services are pay for but some like Crackle are free. Sling will give you access to cable channels but this is also a subscription based service ($20 per month) Here is the Roku channel round up channelstore.roku.com/browse/movies-and-tv/popularity Thanks
can you add and remove channels on the roku tv stick?
Absolutely yes. Thanks
thank you i'm so buying it now thanks to your video!
You're welcome. Here is a link to the Roku Stick 3500R at Amazon: amzn.to/1fTWAsJ
Global Montreal CKMI
Live streaming I would like ..like on Cable.
Thanks ahead a time..Enjoy your day.
Claudette
More than likely it was asking you to register with Roku.com. Local channels are currently hit and miss with more being added regularly streamfree.tv/ I recommend purchasing an over the air antenna for local HDTV streamfree.tv/over-the-air/
what if i don't have WiFi will it still work
Sorry but it only connects through WIFI.
Does this model have the WWE Network and MLB.TV?
I would call both of them to verify it 100%
Richard Lloyd Thank you, I'm getting the streaming stick soon.
Enjoy.
Richard Lloyd I like the streaming stick because I can take it anywhere I go and all my saved apps will stay there.
Thanks.
But what if I don't have an HDMI port?. I have an old TV...
Then you should go with the Roku2 here it is at Amazon amzn.to/1Co80x2 read the reviews and Q/A on Amazon as well.
Explains when bought one earlier this year. Why a date read 2015 cause they are newest things out now.Never though they were new as TV HDMI been around a long time
Can i watch twitch ot that rocku ? :D
Roku*
Karlo Modrić There is no official Twitch channel on Roku....yet. But there is an "unofficial" channel. Here are the details forums.roku.com/viewtopic.php?f=28&t=55866
Richard Lloyd tnx :D
Which device streams the farthest?
I am guessing that you are asking about WIFI performance. I haven't had an issue with either one anywhere in my house. Thanks
Thanks I currently have forecast but it only streams up to 23 ft. Ann yes I am talking about wifi
Chromecast
William Parks Both of mine are 30+ feet away. My Roku3 is 35 feet away and on a second floor away from the router.
@Richard Lloyd - Thanks for your informative and detailed review.
I just purchased the Roku Streaming Stick this week to add more viewing options in addition to my Apple TV. So far, I'm enjoying this device very much and I like the fact that it has access over 1000+ channels.
Here's some photos of the unboxing and short summary:

I believe you need to hold the pairing button down for 3 seconds to force the pair:
Remote pairing instructions - (if remote is unresponsive/unpaired)
Roku 2 XS model 3100 (Enhanced game remote)
Roku 2 model 2720 (Enhanced remote with headphone jack)
Roku 3 model 4200 (Enhanced remote with headphone jack)
Roku Streaming Stick HDMI version model 3500 (Standard remote)
If your remote stops responding, try removing and reinserting the batteries first:
Open the battery compartment.
Remove and reinsert the batteries, following the correct battery orientations.
If that doesn't fix the problem, try pairing the remote again:
Open the battery compartment and locate the pairing button.
Press and hold the pairing button for at least 3 seconds. (front LEDs will blink)
Power cycle the Roku player. (unplug the power connector and plug back in)
During the start up process, the Roku remote will automatically pair to your Roku player. (the front LEDs will stop flashing)

HI! I updated and found lots of free shows etc. I also went into Netflix and I used my username and password. I also went into settings and put it at 1080p OK I'll plug it in the wall outlet, thanks
Yep it's pretty awesome.
Think you
Gail Wilson You're welcome. Thanks for watching.
I don't see a settings or sidebar at all I just show the tonight show, pewdiepie but no way to sign in.
Bill in Las Vegas
Sorry but I need more information to help you. Where are you on the video? Please give me a time reference like 5:21. Thanks.
I found it by using the LEFT ARROW KEY. Thanks Richard.
william patterson I just made a video on the new RUclips Roku Channel here: ruclips.net/video/J2yS3ltVQxU/видео.html and yes the menu is now to the very left of the screen. I actually like it. Thanks.
I think I won't need cable TV anymore...
I don't pay for cable either, just internet. Cable's days are numbered.
I Have The Old Roku HD And I Get RUclips.
Yes. They did roll the RUclips channel out to all the devices.
Thanks
Richard Lloyd
Thanks muchly and remember God loves you.
Hugh James You are welcome. God bless you too.
They all have RUclips I couldn't use the stick
