Wow, glad I watched this, this will really help while testing. I'm trying to setup a Roku for my father and he's in a place with cinderblock walls and horrific WiFi quality. Even when I raise the Roku USB antenna up to 7 feet I only get 1 bar, and that's not even good enough to establish a connection most of the time. This will help a lot to see if I can find a sweet spot. I'm going to try to find or make a DIY dish to improve the signal as well. My phone can use the WiFi there at about 8Mbit if I hold it straight up in the air so it should be possible to get a Roku working too. Any help trying to do that would be super cool but I realize that a more complicated matter.
Try raising the router higher too and or moving the router to different places. @@richardlloydusa Unfortunately we don't have access to the router. I'm going to get a 28cm diameter steel domed food tray lid and then put the Roku 3800X USB antenna segment inside it like the receiver of a satellite dish. I'm just confused how far I need to place the antenna from the lid. I know that 2.4Ghz has a 125mm wavelength so I figure it'll be a function of that? Maybe half that distance or the full distance? Or maybe I need to place the antenna long ways? Anyhow your tip here will hopefully let me play around with it to figure it out.
Sorry the vid is out of date 'cause of hardware changes. Looks like Vudu got rid of their speedtest! But my stick+ DID work once I figured out that shouldn't use the arrow keys! And the "down" command is actually the play/pause button on my remote!
Very nice vid, Richard! Two unanswered questions for me: 1. Is there a way to set preferences to automatically watch credits? (rather than go to the next episode or the next random thing "they" want me to watch) We rarely are fast enough to stop the next episode or next whatever they are shoving at us. 2. Can a preference be set to watch one episode (or one movie) at a time? Often the next day we turn on our program and several episodes have played despite us turning it off with the Roku control.
I'm not certain of those settings. I suggest contacting Roku support for a solution. Thank you for watching and commenting. I appreciate it greatly. All the best.👍😀

My Roku seems to work, I get a excellent signal, and the home page is good , but once I try and play a video through either Netflix or even any TV channel, I seem to lose the video and get a white screen stating that content is unavailable, but I still can hear the sound. I get the same if I try and link my ipad to the TV .. can you help?
Richard, you've done some great videos here on the secret screens and speed test channels. Do you know of a way to get the Roku to report its WiFi link speed (e.g. 72Mbps, 144 MBps, 300 Mbps)? I assume it's a 2x2 (N600) radio but haven't found any documentation to back it up.
OK, I poked around a little bit more and the screens display a Modulation type, e.g. MCS-15 which equates to 2x2 MIMO but doesn't say whether a 20MHz or 40MHz channel width is allowed.
Jonathan Bittner I check on the router side by setting it to 40 MHz and checking my wireless status screen on the router richardlloydusa.com/routersims/WR841N-NDV9R/192.168.1.2/Status_Wireless.html though it's not populated (bottom of the page under wireless nodes) on my simulator you can see that it would show you all those stats. I am using DD-WRT firmware on a TP-LINK TL-WR841N Router at Amazon: amzn.to/1pvoKy9 I changed the setting to Dynamic (20+40MHz) richardlloydusa.com/routersims/WR841N-NDV9R/192.168.1.2/Wireless_Basic.html but it is still connecting at HT20 though my speed increased. My link speed now is 144Mbps. Thanks
That was a good video. Never knew I could test the signal. I had a wifi extender, but it died. Do they make a wireless router that you can plug the ethernet cord into and then plug the other end of the ethernet cord into the roku? or would that even work?
I believe the Roku's limited to 100Mbps using an Ethernet Connection. Most probable, the Wifi is going to be around 40-50Mbps. I have Fios at 1Gbps and am only getting 75Mbps with Ethernet on the Roku TV The only streaming device currently able to get 1Gbps is the Apple TV 4K.
I have the 3700 Roku express , just installing today, will these procedures work to "fine tune" the Roku express. Thanks for the video. I just gotta get away from that 125 dollar/mo. spectrum bill.
great! is there a tweak for 'picture too dang big for my old tube tv and the stuff bleeds over the left and right edges'?? I'll look, have my fingers crossed. other set-top boxes do have precise sizing controls, is irritating that Roku (also the baby Tivo) do not.
I have 1GB Internet. The Roku is connected via cat 6 cable to the AT&T modem/router. I screen mirror to it from my Note Pro 12 tablet, but I noticed that my WiFi speed decreases tremendously to my tablet. I never had this problem before even with the 50mb Internet with Comcast. Could it be a setting in the modem to have it divide bandwidth evenly instead of the Roku using it all just to mirror my tablet screen?
That sound weird especially as it did not do it before. I would have to say it's some sort of problem with the new modem/router from Comcast. I did away with my Time Warner hardware and the monthly rental fee by buying my own modem and using my own router. Here is a video on all that ruclips.net/video/UVbywFbSBpo/видео.html In the end I get everything they were giving me, full control of all my hardware (everything works great as it should) and I save money. Thanks
Try placing your router next to the tv within a few feet just to test if it is a wifi radio signal issue. When the router is that close to the TV it should see the network. If it does not I suggest calling Sharp support and see what they can do for you. Thanks.
I have an older 3500R streaming stick and it has a search function so I can't why your should not. Do a system update menu item System>System update> Check Now and do the update if there is one. If not do a factory reset menu item System> Advanced system settings> Factory reset but understand this will bring the unit back to the day you took it out of the box and you will have reconfigure it again from scratch like the day you took it out of the box. Thanks.
Hi .. Does your channel ever change? Sometimes mine is 7 and sometimes its 11 I have called Roku and asked them about it. And they said it was because they change it when there is a better signal???? But what they have done is changed it from 11 where the roku was working great.. down to 7 and now the roku is not working very well.. I have argued with them about this.. and they still think the signal they choose is better.. But what if you have a lot of trees around you? Wouldn't that hinder the signal? I live in the State of Washington and there are at least 29 pine trees in the courtyard where I live and tons everywhere else.. I am hoping that after I move to Florida I won't have this problem..
+Richard Lloyd ..Yes on my Roku in Settings and then network.. at the bottom.. it shows 7 right now.. but when it was on 11 the roku worked a lot better. I am having to unplug the roku all the time... for it to work.. and I don't think I should be doing this all the time..
+Barbara Corfield The WIFI wireless channel is controlled by my WIFI router. I can log into my router and switch it to what ever channel I choose and the Roku switches to match it. Thanks.
+Richard Lloyd ,,OH.. well.. as I am not that techy... I will have to see about logging into my router to see if I can do the same.. I have no idea... at the moment .. but I will figure it out. I usually do.. with help from You Tubers like you...
Can't do anything fast. That's my problem as of a week ago. Takes like 40 seconds to take a command. It is NOT my charter cable as everything else still fast as hell. Only stuff coming through roku is slowed to a crawl, ( Hulu, Sling..) And Hulu was always fast as hell. It's practically unusable. No idea what happened.
Over the past week my Netflix has been having problems where, for many shows/movies, it buffers up to 25% then fails. Some shows work without problems. I'm clueless as to whats going on and if it might be some kind of connection issue. If I select a movie that plays, no matter how many times I exit and reload it will play. For the titles that buffering and failing, no matter how many times I even reboot my Roku TV, they still buffer to 25% and fail. Do you happen to have any idea about this?
It may be a network issue. Next time it happens try rebooting your router. If that does not solve it reboot your modem and see if either is causing the issue. Thanks.
Who has such a slow net speed? Cox has a minimum of 10Mbps. Mine is 150Mbps! $60/month. You didn't mention the 2.4 or 5 Ghz channel on a router. Was that $20 router a single channel?
i bought the new Roku Ultra recently, Now i am enjoying 4K, but i had the big issue that the internet signal it is being interrupted. Yesterday i found the hidden menu for the Wireless issues, but i just see Reset and Cancel and not the other submenus. Somebody had this kind of issues with the menu? I am right now in the Dev mode and i don't know if that is the reason.
Hey, how do i connect my vcr, dvd combo recorder to antenna? I have insignia roku smart tv. I can play dvd but when i record and play the dish is blank
And dont use channel 3. The only 3 channels that provide no overlap are 1, 6, and 11. This prevents neighboring wifi from crosstalking. Baby monitors and cordless phones also operate on 2.4ghz frequency and will kill performance when used. Otherwise awesome find.
Thanks for the info. My neighbours don't seem to be affecting my WIFI but good advice. I am going to do a WIFI optimization video and I will show how to find the quietest channel to surf on in your environment.
Do I understand correctly I do not need a extra antenna for local stations? I got the sling TV trial &was told I have locals and after Chat was told no I need blue and orange! That's 45.00 I may as well keep my direct TV at 50.00 I know ATT taxes are high but sling didn't say if tax's are included! If I use tablet connect to Chromecast I got locals and on demand don't know if it's from the channel it self but I watched a show on NBC that was halfway over, it also could be because I've got ATT tablet and Comcast internet that system doesn't recognize me don't know but let me know if I still need a antenna!Vizio TV doesn't have a tuner so I got a converter box I just need to figure out what goes where DVD CD player and new DVD because Bose door is broken and only 2 HDMI ports
Your local channels should be available to you Over The Air (OTA). If your TV has coaxial tuner port you can attach an antenna and get your local channels for free. Here is a video on how to do that with just a paper clip: ruclips.net/video/LHtiPDgOR3k/видео.html though this is a very basic antenna you can buy a decent antenna for under $30. Here is an example on Amazon: amzn.to/2fIMVdc or Ebay: goo.gl/T3vaXK The tuner you have should plug into one of your HDMI ports if you do not have enough HDMI ports you can buy an HDMI port switcher at Amazon: amzn.to/2yyy7FO with remote or here at Ebay: goo.gl/EQ7Yvz I recommend a remote on the HDMI switcher. Thanks.

I was bummed that I haven't found anyone adding 2 small external wifi antennas to the Roku Stick yet... the casing is so easily opened, the 2 antenna are easily found towards the back end of the unit & it would seem easy to add 2 short wifi antenna w/ some simple soldering & very basic case modification... Anyone know of any links to such a mod? www.mycablealternatives.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/Roku-3500R-Bottom.png

+Richard Lloyd Thanks for the help. It turns out my speed is HDX so that confirms that some of the free movie channels don't have good servers b/c one movie I watch kept stalling and starting from beginning but all the premium apps don't have any problems at all.
+Carmen Rosado Have you checked to see if your firmware is up to date? Go to Settings>System>System update>Check now and see if there is an update needed (if it is get it) and see if that fixes it. Also is your Roku 3 situated in a location where it gets hot? Thanks.
+Richard Lloyd i have done all the test and everything is good, 40 mg of internet, all the bars are high. Speed is great. Roku is next to the tv on a tv table and the modem is next to the Roku and still freezes. Sone people tell me it might be my internet company that tries to block machtv. Hey i have a roku express n i reset it to connect it to another wifi network n now it wont connect to its original wifi
how do you fix when your roku tv has no signal for your fire stick although your signal on tv say very good signal unable to install kodi
Hi, i have a sharp roku TV and it does not recognize ANY wifi networks. any suggestions?
Try placing your router next to the tv within a few feet just to test if it is a wifi radio signal issue. When the router is that close to the TV it should see the network. If it does not I suggest calling Sharp support and see what they can do for you. Thanks.
i have a roku tv and i dont know how to conect what do i type plzzzz help me plus i only have two to 3 bars to my wifi

I have the 2016 roku streaming stick 3600R, It don't seem to give me a search option, is that normal?
I have an older 3500R streaming stick and it has a search function so I can't why your should not. Do a system update menu item System>System update> Check Now and do the update if there is one. If not do a factory reset menu item System> Advanced system settings> Factory reset but understand this will bring the unit back to the day you took it out of the box and you will have reconfigure it again from scratch like the day you took it out of the box. Thanks.
I don’t get the signal screen. Maybe model.
It could be so. I can only comment on the device I own. Thank you so much for commenting. I appreciate it greatly. All the best.👍😀
Can someone video the use of each button on the remote. Can't adjust sound. Nothing on remote
Any issues with the remote and it using wifi direct affected your connection speed?
None that I have noticed. Thanks.
+Barbara Corfield Are you referring to the WIFI wireless channel? Thanks.
+Barbara Corfield OK. I may make a video on it as it does improve performance. Thanks.
thanks for your help all sorted
Watching this vid I felt like - up up down down left right left right select start
lmao I couldn't remember the sequence to that game.
i still got AOL dial-up. will it work ok then?
+Dick Gozinya It will not work with dial up. Thanks.
You’ve got mail
Thanks.
Nope. It's strictly a Netflix issue. Just finished chatting with them and they said they've seen it in Roku's Sugarland streaming sticks.
Who has such a slow net speed? Cox has a minimum of 10Mbps. Mine is 150Mbps! $60/month. You didn't mention the 2.4 or 5 Ghz channel on a router. Was that $20 router a single channel?
Yes, the $20 router would be a 2.4 GHz only router. Thank you for watching and commenting. I appreciate it greatly. All the best.👍😀
so basically.. get a high speed router, and move it closer to the streaming stick.
Lol
I have internet router that I pay monthly fee will my provider block my speed
I would contact the provider and ask them to find out. Thank you for watching and commenting. I appreciate it greatly. All the best.👍😀
i bought the new Roku Ultra recently, Now i am enjoying 4K, but i had the big issue that the internet signal it is being interrupted. Yesterday i found the hidden menu for the Wireless issues, but i just see Reset and Cancel and not the other submenus. Somebody had this kind of issues with the menu? I am right now in the Dev mode and i don't know if that is the reason.
I do not have a Roku Ultra to experiment. Thanks

is this on roku express for 2019?
Reggie Holder It worked for me
Hey, how do i connect my vcr, dvd combo recorder to antenna? I have insignia roku smart tv. I can play dvd but when i record and play the dish is blank
Thanks for showing me your ip
And dont use channel 3. The only 3 channels that provide no overlap are 1, 6, and 11. This prevents neighboring wifi from crosstalking. Baby monitors and cordless phones also operate on 2.4ghz frequency and will kill performance when used. Otherwise awesome find.
Thanks for the info. My neighbours don't seem to be affecting my WIFI but good advice. I am going to do a WIFI optimization video and I will show how to find the quietest channel to surf on in your environment.
Unless your on 5ghz
My 3600R shows lots of secret screen options after entering the Homex5, etc.
Thanks.
How do I connect my Android phone to ruki.....some one do a vedio about this who ever knows it....
Android using a cast app sends videos to Roku
can I use my hotspot mobile
how can you find out your password to the built in wifi from the roku tv
Not sure what you mean by "built in wifi"? Thanks.
I can't hit my home button 5 times.. Doesn't work for me... 😢
this is from 2014????!!!!
Neither method work with my old SD Roku, It's a RoKu 2.
The technology changes over time. I suggest seeing if you are running the latest update for either device and updating them if needed and then trying again. But there is no guarantee that the feature will be there but at least you will be running the latest software release. Thank you for watching, commenting and the very kind words. I appreciate it greatly. All the best.👍😀
Vudu speed test not obtainable.
Vudu doesn't have speed test anymore
+FMJFilmMedia Yes it still does. They have changed their interface. Go to the settings (gear symbol to the left of sign up) then scroll to playback quality and at the bottom you will see a Run Test box scroll to it and hit OK. Thanks.
+Richard Lloyd Thanks for the help. It turns out my speed is HDX so that confirms that some of the free movie channels don't have good servers b/c one movie I watch kept stalling and starting from beginning but all the premium apps don't have any problems at all.
+FMJFilmMedia You are welcome. It is a good way to confirm that it's not a problem on your end. Thanks.
OK, thanks
You are welcome. All the best.
Great job!!!!
Thank you very much.
roku 3 freezes on my tv and often goes black screen
+Carmen Rosado Have you checked to see if your firmware is up to date? Go to Settings>System>System update>Check now and see if there is an update needed (if it is get it) and see if that fixes it. Also is your Roku 3 situated in a location where it gets hot? Thanks.
+Richard Lloyd i have done all the test and everything is good, 40 mg of internet, all the bars are high. Speed is great. Roku is next to the tv on a tv table and the modem is next to the Roku and still freezes. Sone people tell me it might be my internet company that tries to block machtv. I've tried every single test what else can i do?
My roku dont have that on vudu
Start from 4:20 at ruclips.net/video/k1GZO8e_KJo/видео.html
is 30 Mbps good
take this down to old
Am I the only one who this video won't load for? Tried 3times
Lol it's actually called Antennae Secret Screen in the interface.
Thank you for watching and commenting. I appreciate it greatly. All the best.👍😀

+Joe Jefferson Here is a video for that on the Roku 4 ruclips.net/video/h57sQANm-8A/видео.html Thanks

+Joe Jefferson You're welcome. Thanks for watching.
Richard Lloyd what are your thoughts about the Kindle Fire Stick (jailbroken)
+Joe Jefferson I don't own one so I really can't comment on it. Thanks.
