Can you do a video about giving birth with an existing prolapse? I have a cystocele and mild rectocele after the birth of my 2nd. My dr isn't too concerned about it while I'm in labor, but I'm a little scared about it and making it much worse as I'm pregnant with my next baby currently. I know every person is different and some don't get worse while some do. But nobody ever talks about prolapse.. I have found how common it is, but I'd like more info from a labor nurse's point of view as well 😁 thank you!
Thank you so much for doing this! So much easier to reference when I come back and watch this over and over again 😊 Plus, it’s nice to see it in an “agenda” format too!
I just had my 4th baby a little girl. My older 3 are boys. First son was vaginal with episiotomy. Second son was emergency csection. Third son was vbac with tearing on the inside of my labia and sideways on my labia. This little girl 2nd vbac no tearing. When they told me that after she came out i told her she was my favorite. Lol this has so far been the best recovery yet!
I was scared of tearing as well, but honestly, it's not too bad! I had some discomfort while peeing (it stings a bit) for about 2 weeks, but that's about it! And I delivered a 4.5kg baby! :)
I've experienced both. My first, I had an episiotomy 14 stitches. He was early and only 6 pounds but..because I'm apparently not normal and needed it or tear badly. My younger one, was full term and 6.13, they tried massage, I tore and it took longer to heal with more pain because they didn't listen to my history. As long as they take your personal body reactions to this subject, don't worry about it too much. You'll be great!
I had a second degree tear. I was only on gas and air and was honestly not as bad as it sounds! It was uncomfortable as it was healing but I was too busy with the baby to think too much about it!
Honestly I was more miserable with my tearing than I was during labor. One way to get bad tearing is to push really hard, which I hadn't wanted to do, I wanted to listen to my body, but my water had been broken for 3 days and my temperature started rising (which may or may not have indicated infection, thankfully it did not), so I just wanted to baby OUT. I felt like I was ripping apart for the first 2 days whenever I tried to move. I insisted that the Dr check me and make sure the stitches weren't tearing out even tho they thought I was crazy (the Dr was nice about it but the nurses were so mean). Then I could barely walk for 4 days. They wouldn't tell me how much I tore or how many stitches I got. It was the resident who did the stitching, which I also regret. Next time I'll going to be more of an advocate for myself!
I get induced this upcoming Monday & I can say you’ve honestly helped me prepare myself for labor & aftercare. Because I was SO scared about my first pregnancy. Please NEVER stop making videos cause you are seriously a lifesaver.
Remember to do your squats, ladies! Not only does squatting help open up and stretch the ligaments in your pelvis to aid baby's decent, it also helps stretch that perineum too. Use your partner or a sturdy surface to hang onto if you need balance and support.
I’ve heard that improper squatting technique can damage/weaken the pelvic floor. Yes this is good advice, but I’d like to add like all workouts use proper techniques.
YES PLEASE!!!! I was lucky enough not to tear, but the one hemorrhoid I gained while birthing my first now has about four marble sized buddies that joined him as of yesterday 🙄 thankfully I didn’t tear during labor though!
I’m pregnant for the first time, my midwives have been helpful and answer any questions I have, but since this is my first pregnancy and first baby, I often have no clue what kind of questions I should be asking. I feel lost and like I’m missing key information. Your videos have been so helpful. You are giving me information I’m not asking for, which is super helpful when you are completely new to the entire childbirth experience. Thank you so much! It’s been a really hard pregnancy. This pandemic has left me feeling so isolated. My anxiety is through the roof. Your videos really are helpful! Thank you!
I understood how you felt as well. I had my first as well and videos like these helped me find questions and answers. I also watching home births and hospital births and they helped me form some birth plans encase my original plan. couldn't be used. I went from plan A to D in the spain of 4 hours.
My doctor continuously made me push out the baby every time I felt the “ring of fire” good thing I didn’t listen and I took my time because I ended up with no tears.
I wish I didn't listen. My dr told me the same and I did. My epidural had worn most of the way off. I tore and he sewed me up without giving me anything. I wish I had known my rights at that time
I need to try and do that this time around.. each time I was told to hold me breath and push through the ring of fire too and I tore with both births 😥
I tore with my daughter. Padsicles were amazing. Witch hazel with aloe on a pad stuck in the freezer. My pp nurse was amazing with teaching me how to do the tucks pads and ice packs. The hospital I was in also let’s you hold your baby doing skin to skin the entire time you’re being stitched as well (as long as everything is ok with baby). It was pretty helpful to have her as a distraction too so I wasn’t focused on them stitching me
Could you please recommend the brands for the products you mentioned. Thanks 🙆

I was terrified of tearing at my first pregnancy. This word is so brutal and graphic. Turns out I did. It was more of a relief than pain! I did tear a little on my 2nd and didnt with my 3rd. Of course its better not to tear, but it really is not as terrible as it sounds. Now im days away of giving birth to twins, and its the last thing on my mind!
I agree, without an epidural you don't even really feel the tearing. And perhaps using the word laceration is less brutal and graphic, but I wanted to make sure everyone knew what I was talking about. So many words in labor are negative (failure to, incompetent cervix, false labor), it's important that we are mindful of our speech, for sure. Good luck with your twins!! 💗

@@Nurse_zabe Thank you! Yeah I did not mean to sound like I was telling you it's a bad word. I use it too, I think it's ok to use it I just meant that it sounds worst than it is :)
Wow! 5 kids! You’re so blessed! I just found out I’m pregnant with my first and couldn’t be more excited! I want at least four but my husband isn’t so sure about it
Exactly this! I tore badly bc of a condition I had, but it was a relief over the pain of laboring and pushing. My recovery was what sucked, 3 months. 😕 But the tearing itself was not nearly what people make it out to be.
I had my first baby a month ago and because of your videos I was so prepared and knew what was going on that all the nurses thought it was my second so thank you 💜
Don't stress too much about it, really! After delivering a 4.5kg baby I suffered from some discomfort, I wouldn't even call it 'pain'! My biggest problem was actually doing number 2 ;) I was so scared of breaking the stitches (which, I know, is impossible! :)) that I blocked myself for a week, and seriously - that was much more uncomfortable than the tearing!:) Oh, and even after delivering such a big baby and not having done any exercises to help me with the process, I ended up with only level 2 tearing, so the pretty standard one. Good luck!
@@xijan not completely impossible. My stitches tore after 3 days but not due to bowl movement, rather from getting out of bed to nurse my baby too fast. Need to be careful doing the other everyday things as well not just going to the toilet
I wish I’d seen this before I had my baby in Jan. I knew I’d torn bc they had to stitch me up but no one actually told me what degree of tear I had or where it was (and I was too scared to look until later). I ended up reading the note about my birth when a nurse popped out of my room and left herself logged into the computer (I’m a nurse too, and I know I shouldn’t have done that but 🤷🏼♀️🙈) and THATS how I learned I had a 2nd degree tear. I also feel like I also got no education about how to care for my tear when I went home :( maybe because I’m a nurse and they assumed I knew? Thank you for making this video because now I’ll feel much more prepared next time I give birth and hopefully the first few days won’t be as uncomfortable 🤞🏻
Same, honestly. But i knew I tore kinda bad since they had to stick me up. Found out it was a fourth degree tear. I'm assuming they didn't say anything to me about mine (like how bad it was) because it wasn't vertical (into anus or urethra) luckily! But, yeah, they didn't tell me anything on how to take care of it or what to look for or whatever.
How frustrating that you didn’t receive enough education. Hopefully your next delivery will go more smoothly. I think sometimes it’s hard taking care of another medical provider. I’ve personally taken care of two of our pediatricians in labor and postpartum. I just try and pretend like they don’t know anything to make it easier on myself. That way they might get some info twice, but we won’t miss anything!
My vagina was ripped up and it honestly wasn’t something I was worried about. I had stitches in the inside and outside and it was hard to sit. The nurses gave me so many good tips and tricks the recovery wasn’t that bad. I had tears that didn’t need stitches and some that did. Thank you for this video.
I had some minor tearing with my son and it really wasn’t that bad. Failed epidural so I felt the ring of fire but beyond that, it was all just intense so I couldn’t tell that I tore. The healing process went great, just some stinging when I used the bathroom but nothing horrible.
I'm due in June and I've been kind of nervous about tearing among other things and you've made me so much more comfortable going into this. I love your videos!
I had tearing with my daughter I didn’t get an epidural so I felt the stitches it was horrible I have heard they can numb you before stitching you however I didn’t know a thing with my first lol
I got you girl! I'm due in July and I'm going for a natural birth, ive been terrified as hell of this stuff so I'm there with you lol. I'll root you on!
There is a RUclipsr named curly Susie who normally does hair videos but also discussed her pregnancy and subsequent 4th degree tear. Highly recommend for anybody who is going through this or worried about it. Also, Susie is a nurse, so even though she doesn't work in L&D, you can sense her bedside manner through her videos
I’m due in August with my rainbow baby, after two losses, and tearing is something I’m terrified of! My older sister had a 4th degree tear with her first as his shoulder was stuck and they didn’t realise until too late and then had a 3rd degree with her second where she tore through scar tissue- so all I’ve heard is horror stories! It’s so nice to find a channel that talks so positively and helped reduce my fears! ❤️ Thank you Nurse Zabe! ❤️
I teared 3rd deegre when i had my son.. and i had a fast recovery but quite painful ....i am very blessed to have my baby boy with me.....my mom helped me with a frase...." 5 minutes of pain and a lifetime of happiness "
I am finishing nursing school in a few weeks and have considered L&D nursing once I am graduated. Your passion for L&D nursing inspires me and makes me want to pursue that path as well! Love your videos because they are a good refresher for NCLEX as they remind me of my Maternal/Newborn class. Thank you for all the hard work you put into this channel!
Well..i had a HORRIBLE delivery 14 years ago, mainly because I had a horrible doctor, but i was cut 3 times, which I felt, and I will tell you, everything down there went right back to normal
Hoooo boy, this is definitely the most uncomfortable and anxious one of Nurse Zabe's videos has made me. I know this is educational to help reduce anxiety, but apparently any level of education on this topic just makes me feel faint.
I had an episiotomy and had 8 stitches, my epidural ran out before I even started pushing and I can say I honestly didn’t feel the cutting and it healed pretty fast. I’m due in 8 weeks with my second baby and I’m not even worried about the tearing or the labor this time around I’m more scared of getting a c-section. The whole delivery process becomes a blur before you know it. My husband says I was pushing for almost 2hrs and I thought it was 30minutes lol
Your channel is so comforting. I'm due in the fall and going into my first labor having the knowledge you share with us makes me feel like I have more control over things. I sincerely want to say thank you for everything you do for expecting moms and dads ♥️.
I really don't know how I feel about this, I am 29 weeks and watching these videos to prepare myself but Im so terrified. Thnx for all this info, totally helpful
Thanks for doing this video. Hoping not to tear with this second baby🙏 I had an on-call doctor deliver my first baby, and she told me to push the baby out with my very first push, not joking!!! Against my better judgement, I listened to her, and got a 3rd degree tear😭 And she couldn't get me numb at all for the stitching!! She administered at least 3 doses of lidocaine, but I felt every prick, and I bawled😭😭😭 You covered all of my past experience...
I begged my doctor with my first to not do an episiotomy unless medically necessary. He did it anyways. My daughters HR was fine. I feel I could have pushed her out with natural tearing but he was in a rush and cut me twice as I was yelling no. I was pissed. Recovery was absolutely brutal. So much pain and now I still get pain on the scar during intercourse. I'm 35 weeks now with a different doctor and she only performs episiotomies if absolutely needed. I feel so much safer with my doctor now. I'm actually planning to birth this time without an epidural and allowing my body to do all the work. Having a compassionate doctor who cares about your wishes, unless an emergency happens, is so important.
"Girl I got you!" Hearing you say that literally made my anxiety go down so much! I love your videos and I watch them over and over again so I can be as ready as possible for my son. Thank you 💕💕
Thank you so much for taking the time to make these videos, especially during this time. Most of my birth classes have been cancelled and I have a lot of anxiety about not being prepared.
I totally understand the stress that comes with cancelled birth classes. I'm going to put out a video series over the next couple of weeks on the tools to put in your labor tool box to deal with labor. Hopefully those will be helpful too!
My husband and I were just talking about epidurals and tearing and throughout this video I was visibly shaking until you started talking about ways to prevent it. Thank you
watching this made me so weak, I am terrified OMG. C-section with the first, planning a water/natural birth with this one but I'm starting to think another C-section would be so much less pain. sheesh I recovered so fast last time, without needed water squirt bottles, witch hazel, having hemorrhoids, not too much vaginal bleeding, not need for anything really. I'm shaking in my boots right now lol
i really don't know how i came across your videos, i'm not even pregnant i have no plans of being pregnant or having a baby any time soon but i think you're absolutely adorable, super informative and most of all you're supportive. I know when that time does come that i'll want to have a baby i know i have your videos to help me through. i love all you do for women in work and on here, i think you and your channel is amazing. ❤️
Omg! You just covered all the questions I am worried about. Thinking/Planning of having no epidural natural birth and just answered about the tearing part. I thought they won't put any numbing medication to the vagina while stitching. I felt relief. Thank you for very specific information.
This video has just taught me so much! When I was in the Delivery room they had me positioned under a very reflective light so I literally witnessed everything. My epidural didn’t quite take and so I felt the ring of fire but I also didn’t quite know as much about labor and child birth as I do now through research with upcoming baby #2. when my dr came after they gave me something to progress my labor along as I had been in labor for just over 24 hours, they literally told me they have a scheduled c-section in 30 minutes so either start pushing or wait. So I figured well let’s do this. Well my dr gave me an episiotomy and I had absolutely no idea that it was something I should’ve been consulted about prior to it being done. Baby was delivered within 10 minutes. I felt so stressed and rushed and after seeing this I can’t believe how unnecessary a lot of it was. My recovery from the episiotomy was roughly 1 and a half months and it was absolutely excruciating and I wouldn’t wish it on anyone.
Any mild oil or lubricant will do. We used coconut oil or almond oil bc I had a reaction to olive oil. And like the previous reply said, do not use essential oils!
i heard that epidurals has a correlation with tearing in women. wherever i read it from, it said that because the women can't feel anything while they're pushing and end up pushing too hard and so the baby comes out too fast without the vaginal skin stretching around the head quickly enough and so tearing occurs.
I had an amazing ob with my first had an awesome epidural didnt even have pressure while pushing and ended up with NO tears not even burns and only pushed for 15 min.
Thank god for your whole channel! I’ve become so informed this entire pregnancy. I get induced next Friday at 39 weeks and I’m so nervous but at the same time I feel more prepared. Thank you again!
You definitely eased my fear of tearing! I’m so early on in my pregnancy that I have more pressing things to think about but thank you!!! I was thoroughly informed and entertained! You just gained a new subbie!! 💕
I can't explain how grateful I am to have found your channel a few weeks prior to being induced. My date is May 5, so I'm soaking up as much as possible. Thank you so much for the content you put out is so important to girls like me giving birth without the help during quarantine.
Aw, you got this, mama! This is certainly a tough time to give birth with lots of unpredictabilities, but from my experience of birth, it can be unpredictable too. What’s not unpredictable is the strength of laboring moms and the inherit hope that these small, new lives bring into the world. 💗💗
You are a Great resource for mommies to be. You are So right about episiotomies in the 90's! I was given 1 during my 1st delivery, and wasn't asked or informed. I just Felt it!! Horrible surprise. Sitz baths, padcicicles, and Tuck's saved my Life. 👍🏾
I got these perineal ice packs from amazon after birth and omg it’s the best thing EVER!! Even better than the hospital kind cause it absorbs more. Highly recommend them.
Thanks for this video!!! It’s so affirming to hear a professional talk about severe tearing and how it’s not the norm and requires more healing. I really feel like women just blow past this part of recovery and don’t talk about it. I was induced at 41 weeks in November and ended up with a 3rd degree tear. The whole experience was traumatizing (for many more reasons that’s just the tearing) and I am now going to look for a good PT. My whole pelvic area still feels so vulnerable and unstable. I would really appreciate a video about hemorrhoids too! Those are still a thing for me too 🥴 Couples questions - Do you see more severe tearing with women who are induced? How likely is it that I will have a severe tear with another baby?
I wish this would have been made 7 weeks ago, as a first time mom when I tore 4th degree I was traumatized. This is helpful thank you for your videos I was afraid of childbirth but your videos had me ready to go
Oh my goodness, I hope you are doing ok! One more tip I forgot to mention is that if you are having issues with healing, of course seek out your doctor to make sure things look good, but a pelvic floor physical therapist can also be really helpful and beneficial in aiding in your recovery!
Nurse Zabe luckily my doctor is amazing and according to him I healed up nicely I just have a small issue but we are gonna look into that on Tuesday. I will say the first week after that tear I feared going to the bathroom sitting and even tho it was bad I’d do it again my little monster was worth it all 8 lbs and 22inches
I have had 2nd degree tears with both of my deliveries. Honestly, It wasn't terribly uncomfortable. I was sore for a while down there, and I would get a pinch from my stitches if I moved to fast a certain way or stretched too much or something. But it wasn't near as scary as it sounds. I agree the hemroids are what was the most uncomfortable. Hoooweee. Lol
when my first son was born i torn and it burned soooooo bad!!! After stitches I had to sit oh so carefully for a few weeks. aaaand i still feel discomfort from where I torn 4 years and 2 more kids later :(. im going to look into getting it corrected
Thank you so much for your videos! I'm 25 weeks pregnant with my first baby, and your videos have helped me so much to prepare for my delivery! I was curious if you could do a video on the topic of circumcision? Like pros and cons? I'm having a baby boy and I'm stuck in the middle on whether I should have that done for him or not. Thank you! 😊
Lilly Loraine I’ve been a member of this organization called Evidence Based Birth for ongoing education & evidence around all things pregnancy/childbirth. They recently looked at the research and evidence on newborn circumcision and have some really good info that I’d recommend checking out :). They also have a nice two page handout about it. evidencebasedbirth.com/evidence-and-ethics-on-circumcision/
@@Nurse_zabe I just came from your Q&A, and thank you so much for touching on the topic! I know how controversial it is, so I totally understand why you didn't want to do a whole video. After all the research I've done, my heart has been telling me that it's unethical and unnecessary, even though I've still been kinda torn on what I should do for other reasons. But, hearing a medical professional like yourself say they disagree too makes me feel like not having that done to my child is the right decision! I'm sorry if I'm making a big deal, but I just want the best for my baby boy. 😅 Luckily, I have a boyfriend that is fine with whatever decision I make. LOL Thank you again for all your fantastic content and positive energy. It really eases a first time pregnant woman's mind! ❤
I am 21 weeks pregnant, first baby! I am also a nurse (but palliative care nurse), from Portugal and I remember some of my classes in nursing school about maternity and child birth, but there is soooo much I don't know and your videos are wonderful, you give so much useful information! I love your videos! Thank you so much!
You’re so welcome! Thank you for the care you give to those at the end of their life. Nursing is so wonderful because it encompasses from the very beginning to the end. 💗
I love your channel so much!! Me and my husband aren’t pregnant yet but are planning to begin trying In the next few years. I feel so much prepared after learning everything you teach! ❤️
Recently gave birth to twin boys in January 2020 and suffered a 2nd degree tear. The first week or two is the most painful. I took a stool softener everyday to help ease the pain when I had to go and still felt some discomfort down there. Sitz baths every night (soaked for a minimum of 20 minutes), spraying the area with water and witch hazel every time I used the bathroom, and using cooling pads with aloe Vera multiple times a day really helped speed up my recovery. I was fully recovered within about 8-9 weeks.
When I had my first, they never told me to use the bottle while i was urinating so for the first few days i was miserable using the bathroom :P it was the lactation consultant that informed me. They also never gave me numbing spray or stool softeners while in the hospital. Sitz baths were the bomb when I got home though lol
It's all about timing with that squirt bottle and to make it work for you! And I totally forget to mention stool softeners, but those are great too! Some of those medications and treatments are ordered PRN (as needed), so you might need to ask for them next time. 😊
Wait - there’s such a thing as numbing spray?! My nurses also never mentioned the stool softener, thought I was going to die if Neil my sister told me to get some!
@@ektom90 yes! Dermaplast is what most people use or most hospitals give their patients from what I understand. There are also other brands like mother love that make their own natural sprays to help that you can find on Amazon as well.
Not gonna lie this video made me terrified lol. I know that is not your intention. As a first time pregnant woman I am glad I I found this channel. It has given me a lot to think about and its teaching me a lot. Thank you!
I had a 3rd degree tear with my first. The hospital actually sent me home with the sitz bath! It was amazing. The dermaplast however stung like none other 😬
I tore with my daughter and am currently 37 weeks pregnant with my son and am hoping I don’t tear. My doctor never told me how bad I tore with her but I know I had stitches. I’m really hoping it can be avoided this time but your video helped me better understand it! Thank you 😊!!
I wish someone told me using aloe Vera can cause infection! I made padsicles because they are a “thing” apparently and infected my tear and LORD it was painful. Also the mama Frida spray bottle was sensational. Also, I love your videos!
I still remember reading birth stories before I had my first baby and one lady told the story of recovery from her 4th degree tear, lovingly referring to it as her 'vaganus'. Kinda made me a little nervous lol.
Thank you SO much for your tips and insider info. I'm due any day and each of your videos bring me more and more peace! You explain things so well and thorough. You're awesome Nurse Zabe!
I was so scared of tearing, but no one told me I could tear up too 😂 I had a periurethral tear and a side wall laceration. Currently 3 weeks postpartum and it hasn't been too painful luckily. I just miss sex! 🙃
I'd never heard of it either but I also had a tear by my urethra and up to my hood it was awful! The stitches were so painful and sex just doesn't feel as good as it used to even though it healed very well
Thank you so much for your video! I just had my baby the other day early. I had an episiotomy and I still ended up tearing. I have third degree tearing. They also had to use forceps to get my little one out. Took my doctor an hour to sow me back together. Trying to heal and figure out what will help me heal as quick as possible right now. Thanks for all the great information!
I am almost 32 weeks and I. LOVE. YOUR. VIDEOS. I have been watching them since before ttc and throughout my pregnancy. I feel educated and prepared for my birth and as I start my journey as a new mom. You are the best, Elizabeth!!!
I just want to say thank you for taking the time to make these videos. It’s particularly so valuable during this time where we can’t go to in person prenatal classes or access a lot of pregnancy related resources - including seeing a pelvic floor specialist. Something I wanted to do due to a pelvic floor condition I have. Even my prenatal appointments have been cut down to once a month when its usually once every 2 weeks during the third trimester. I was so worried about vaginal birth and was almost leaning towards an elected c section. Your videos have been reassuring. I have some confidence going into labour in July. Thanks, and you are appreciated.
Hello! I'm from Portugal and we don't get most of that stuff in the hospital. Can you please do a video or a Amazon list of stuff? One of my good friend Wil be a father soon and I would love to do a care basket for his wife whit all of this stuff (and some more recommendations if you don't mind). I'm not a mom so I'm a little bit uneducated on this topic, although I try to learn everything I can because is just a good way to help a friend, just be his personal Google hehe Btw you are awsome! Keep up the good work!
I am going to be a mom soon, and also from Portugal! It would be a great idea to give us a list of the things you give in the hospital, because we don't have it. Those circular pads are interesting!
I had two 3rd (almost 4th) degree tears and a ton of interior tears. Ended up with 6 suture packets, estimated 100 stitches. Honestly, labor was more painful than recovery. It wasn’t as bad as it sounds.
They didn’t tell me to do half pushes at the end. They told me to push harder! I had an epidural. Had 3rd degree tearing. Healing was worse than delivery!
Same! They were really trying to make me push as hard as possible and doc had to do an emergency episiotomy because it freaked out babies heart. Pretty sure that it made me tear even worse after I was snipped because healing has been HELL and I feel tons of pain in my rectum. I had my baby about 10 days ago. Pretty pissed that they didn't tell me what degree or how many stitches either.
Thank you so much Elizabeth❤Had my baby girl on Canada day (July 1st) via an induction with an epidural, after 3 very long days of early labor and my water's breaking early! Your videos helped me be ok with the "plan" going out the window! Rewatching this one as I did end up with a second degree tear!(ouchy!)
I just gave birth to my son on April 27 and was worried about that but my doctor was great and I only had a level 2 tear. I'm just having issues now with not healing correctly for some reason 😥. I'm not allowed to do anything so my husband is stepping up to help. Any advice for at home care would be great. I just wanted to say thank you for all of your videos on breastfeeding, labor, support people, etc. They helped me out so much.
I pushed both of my girls out super fast. I just couldn’t help it. My first I had an epidural (a good one where I could still feel my contractions). I had an induction with her and it was without an epidural, my body wasn’t going to progress. My midwife used the counter pressure and mineral oil to keep me from tearing and I had none. I was amazed! I pushed her out so fast! My second I went in to labor on my own and it went super fast, four hours of labor and literally 30 seconds of pushing. I asked my midwife why she wasn’t doing any counter pressure, she just said “ I think you’re good, go for it!”. My baby came so quickly! I feel so lucky I didn’t have any tearing. My daughters head was so perfectly round because she just came so fast! I’m currently pregnant with baby number 3 at age 33. So excited to see what this little life has in store for me. I’m so looking forward to the labor and delivery process. After having my youngest naturally I now know how my body works on its own, and I’m confident that my body knows what to do. I’m amazed with how much better the labor and delivery process has become as medicine has progressed. My mother had routine episiotomies with both my sister and I. I wonder if she would have had to if she had labored us today. One thing I can’t get a break from, however.... those darn hemeroids! Those are just a menace during pregnancy for me overall. Sitz baths are a lifesaver!
@@larissagutierrez2894 dont worry. Even if you do tear you wont really notice because that little person in your arms makes you forget all of the uncomfortableness
Your videos give me so much peace in mind! I swear all first time mamas need to watch your videos! Thank you for sharing this information, you’re the best 💖
Oh my! I wish I had seen your videos before my first, or at least before my second. Now I'm about to have my third and there's so much you're telling me that I had to either learn on my own or didn't even know yet. Thank you! I had an episiotomy with my first after pushing for almost 2 hours. The doctor never said anything about it being necessary for baby's safety, just that it was the only thing keeping her from getting out and if she did an episiotomy she'd be out with just one push, so I agreed to it. I tried to ask questions about what kind of tear or how many stitches, out of curiosity, but my doctor was vague and didn't answer me. With my second, I only pushed a handful of times and she came out really fast. I had a tear that I think was bad, but I was never told what kind of tear it was. My recovery was harder and I had a lot of pain from the stitches. Now I'm planning on my first unmedicated birth, so I'm wondering about tearing and stitches without an epidural. It's good to know I can stop them and tell them to give me more pain meds if it's too painful. Thank you!
Love this! I used witch hazel wipes for sooo long after birth and still enjoy them haha. I was shocked after I gave birth and had to use the squirt bottle, never knew!!
thank you for this video! im due in two months and this is great info for the big day. Could you please do a video on different birthing positions and their pros/cons?
Thank you so much for making videos! I enjoy learning about all of this before I get pregnant so I can prepare my mind. And you are so lovely to listen to! ❤️
I did perineal massage before the birth of my first and my midwife also helped stretch and massage down there as I was giving birth. I’m not sure what she did exactly, but she said it would prevent bad tears. I only ended up needing 4 stitches and I was glad. I’m having a c section in November with my second, just thought I’d share what I think helped me personally not to tear super bad.
@@sophiesimon5007 hiiii! Omg birth was uncomfortable because my water broke and I was leaking everywhere but beautiful! I got the epidural and the doctor had to cut me so the baby would come out but I wasn’t in pain at all ! I pushed for 35-40 min and baby was out. Healing was so easy, I didn’t even use the tucks pads or the spray to numb it! I was so terrified but it was soooo easy thank god !
I had a sideways baby and needed forceps so I was out of luck and tore sideways. Also as a redhead, I had significant swelling that took 3 weeks to go down. That was much worse than the tears themselves. Here's some tips I have if you do end up dealing with trauma down there: The padsicles are tempting, but I'm glad my doctor recommended I don't use them as it helped along my healing. Instead I would spend a few minutes each day "airing out" my bottom. Take it easy with the stool softeners and opt for high fiber foods. Contractions happen when you nurse, and if you had diarrhea during your periods, you want to be close to the bathroom--I ended up needing Depends for a couple days =( Invest in a bidet--they're like $20 and most allow you to turn on a gentle flow to spray your bottom without aggravating your hemmerroids (the bottle is still great for your front!) Finally, take it easy. The doughnuts and boppy pillows can only do so much to take the pressure off--you still need to rest.
I used evening primrose oil, they sell the capsules at target. Get a pin and pop a hole in it and use that. I didn't tear at all with my 1st and it snapped back afterwards
I had a baby almost a year ago. 40 hrs of induced labor and 4 hrs of pushing. Ended up having almost fourth degree tearing because my son had shoulder dysplasia and came out lifeless. Lucky my docs and all the emergency response team got him out and going. A week in NICU and a lot of time to heal for me and we are both alive and well thankfully but recovering from that amount of tearing was hard 😬
Thank-you so much for this!! Im 26 weeks with my first and trying to soak up as much information as I can! Can you please make a video about what fathers/partners to be can help with/do during labour and delivery for my husband? =) Thanks you are AMAZING!
I have one! "Tips for labor support people from a labor nurse." Coincidentally, I'm wearing the same sweater in that video that I'm wearing in this one 😂
Thank you Nurse Zabe! This video has provided so much comfort and education for me. I truly appreciate the time and effort you put into this. I look forward to what else you have to share! ❤️🤗
With my first, my doctor didn’t want to cut me and was trying to help stretch me but it wasn’t working so I told her to just do it, I didn’t feel anything because of the epidural. She came quickly right after the cut. With my second born, my son came so quickly 5-10 minutes of pushing that there wasn’t anytime to question if a cut was needed and I tore. I felt everything because the epidural failed to work with him but it was hard to distinguish the pain of the tear from the ring of fire. Honestly, neither was too bad. Both were second degree, I was so focused on getting them out that a cut or tear was the last thing I was worried about. It definitely was uncomfortable healing from the wounds. A lot of pain meds, ice, witch hazel and numbing spray was used. Took about 2-3 weeks for the pain to completely disappear.
All of your videos have been extremely helpful! I’m so happy I came across your Chanel, I’m due in June and I feel good about everything. Thank you for the amazing videos! I wish you were my nurse
You can also ask if your hospital has special perineal pads that are also ice packs. My hospital gave me some and they were great! You squeezed and shook it to activate the coolness. Also That spray bottle is life! I still use it sometimes and I’m 5 months pp.
Have you ever heard of the husband stitch? Been reading up on it and it’s scary. I’m trying for a baby right now and so shocked by this kind of stitch x

As an LD Nurse, what position do you prefer your patients to deliver in?
I love you!!😂💕💕. You present amazing and helpful information and tips!! Thank you!!!
Tearing is what gives me the most anxiety about labor. Thank you so much for explaining everything! I definitely feel more prepared.
Knowledge is power! 💪🏼💗
You got this, mama! 💪🏼💗
Hey I get induced Monday the 4th too!! Congrats ❤❤
Congrats! Good luck Mama bear! You got this! Mother of God in the eyes of her child ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Jaylan H. Congrats 🥳
Tegan Sheltman congratulations 🥳
Just listening to her talk about this is making my butt clench. I’m terrified 😭
Mine too!!! First baby due in October
Carrie Jones my first is due in November. Good luck to you!
Same. And I am not even pregnant yet. Seriously, mothers are some serious superheroes!
Same 😭😭😭
how was your delivery, girls???
Remember to do your squats, ladies! Not only does squatting help open up and stretch the ligaments in your pelvis to aid baby's decent, it also helps stretch that perineum too. Use your partner or a sturdy surface to hang onto if you need balance and support.
I’ve heard that improper squatting technique can damage/weaken the pelvic floor. Yes this is good advice, but I’d like to add like all workouts use proper techniques.
I was told to do squats...but my poor feet and ankles swell so bad....
make to stretch after too because you want flexible strong muscles too!
Tammy Felter same here !
Also walking!!
Nurse Zabe please please please make a video on hemorrhoids during pregnancy and how to treat it. Thank you!
I can do this! Who knew it would be such a requested topic?
Will you also cover vulvar varicosities as well? I had no idea they were even possible but had them the last couple of months of my last pregnancy.
This! Currently pregnant and ya 😑
what is up with pregnancy shits? it’s like dropping a brick...
if you can handle 9 months of this, labour is NOTHING !!!
Good for you!! Wish I had done the same...
And I pushed like I was about to stop breathing, I wish I was as smart as you
I wish I didn't listen. My dr told me the same and I did. My epidural had worn most of the way off. I tore and he sewed me up without giving me anything. I wish I had known my rights at that time
It feels like this is what they do most of the time! Messed up.
Had a baby boy last week, 3rd degree tear but he was worth it 💙🙏🏽 praying for complete healing
I had a third degree and I healed up completely back to normal!
I had a second degree but my daughter is 10000% worth the tear! 💕
I had my first baby a month ago and because of your videos I was so prepared and knew what was going on that all the nurses thought it was my second so thank you 💜
Aw yay! This makes my heart happy to hear. 🤗
I'm over here cringing, I have 5 weeks or less and i am terrified of having a severe tear.
🥺😣
Wow, it sounds like you had a lot going on after your delivery. Thankful you had supportive nurses to help you manage! 💗💗
I had some minor tearing with my son and it really wasn’t that bad. Failed epidural so I felt the ring of fire but beyond that, it was all just intense so I couldn’t tell that I tore. The healing process went great, just some stinging when I used the bathroom but nothing horrible.
I'm 4 days postpartum with a second degree tear and this video just came at the perfect time!
Yay! Congrats!!!
I'm due in June and I've been kind of nervous about tearing among other things and you've made me so much more comfortable going into this. I love your videos!
You got this, mama! 💗💪
Congrats on finishing up nursing school!!! Come join us in L&D!
I legitimately cringe every time I think about tearing
me too:"(
Well..i had a HORRIBLE delivery 14 years ago, mainly because I had a horrible doctor, but i was cut 3 times, which I felt, and I will tell you, everything down there went right back to normal
🥺Sorry to hear it was so horrible but im glad you recovered 😊❤
Hoooo boy, this is definitely the most uncomfortable and anxious one of Nurse Zabe's videos has made me. I know this is educational to help reduce anxiety, but apparently any level of education on this topic just makes me feel faint.
Ekreagan same!
Omg, same here. I was nauseous the whole time watching this. BUT knowing that I can do something to help reduce tearing eased my anxiety a little bit.
Knowledge is power. You got this, mama! 💗💪
I really don't know how I feel about this, I am 29 weeks and watching these videos to prepare myself but Im so terrified. Thnx for all this info, totally helpful
Thanks for doing this video. Hoping not to tear with this second baby🙏
I had an on-call doctor deliver my first baby, and she told me to push the baby out with my very first push, not joking!!! Against my better judgement, I listened to her, and got a 3rd degree tear😭
And she couldn't get me numb at all for the stitching!! She administered at least 3 doses of lidocaine, but I felt every prick, and I bawled😭😭😭
You covered all of my past experience...
Thank you 💕💕
in my hospital they give pads with ice already in them.. and that feels so good!
Those are neat!
Nurse Zabe 💜💜💜
My husband and I were just talking about epidurals and tearing and throughout this video I was visibly shaking until you started talking about ways to prevent it. Thank you
watching this made me so weak, I am terrified OMG. C-section with the first, planning a water/natural birth with this one but I'm starting to think another C-section would be so much less pain. sheesh I recovered so fast last time, without needed water squirt bottles, witch hazel, having hemorrhoids, not too much vaginal bleeding, not need for anything really. I'm shaking in my boots right now lol
I love watching your videos and they help me ease my nerves as a soon to be FTM ! 25w2d today ☺️ I’m due August 11 with a girl
My son is due August 12th! These videos have really been putting me at ease too. :)
August 9th here! I've been addicted to watching these and other videos to get myself more prepared :)
My due date is August 12😊
I’m due August 27th with a girl
Congrats! Thanks for watching! 💗
i really don't know how i came
across your videos, i'm not even pregnant i have no plans of being pregnant or having a baby any time soon but i think you're absolutely adorable, super informative and most of all you're supportive.
Can you please explain the perineum massage in more detail including which oils to use. Love love love videos. Thank you.
Olive oil. Never ever everrrr any essential oils
Any mild oil or lubricant will do. We used coconut oil or almond oil bc I had a reaction to olive oil. And like the previous reply said, do not use essential oils!
Currently 34 weeks and watching all your videos over and over trying to prepare myself
i heard that epidurals has a correlation with tearing in women. wherever i read it from, it said that because the women can't feel anything while they're pushing and end up pushing too hard and so the baby comes out too fast without the vaginal skin stretching around the head quickly enough and so tearing occurs.
They can, which is why listening to your doctor at the end to make sure you allow the areas the time to stretch is key!

Good luck with your induction! You’ve got this, mama!! 💗💪🏼
I’m 19 and not pregnant, but my baby fever is higher than it’s ever been! I’ll keep these things in mind for the future
Always good to be informed. I'm 33 and about to become a first time mom and soaking up so much information
I got these perineal ice packs from amazon after birth and omg it’s the best thing EVER!! Even better than the hospital kind cause it absorbs more. Highly recommend them.
Thank you so much for this video! I had no idea about episiotomies being potentially worse than tearing naturally
omg i just searched this last night cant believe you just posted God is good and using you
That's awesome! Hope I answered some questions!
Those are still a thing for me too 🥴
Couples questions - Do you see more severe tearing with women who are induced?
Yeah, the ‘rrhoids are no fun at all!
Thanks! It helped ♥️
If you look to my Q&A with a labor nurse video, I talk about circumcision in that video.
I had to ecplain to my husband that he was not circumsized, he thought he was 😅😥
I am 21 weeks pregnant, first baby!
I absolutely love watching your videos, educational and funny! I so appreciate you!
Thank you 💗
Recently gave birth to twin boys in January 2020 and suffered a 2nd degree tear.
Stool softeners are great tip too! Congrats on your twin boys!! 💗
Nurse Zabe Thank you so much! Love all of your informative videos, Nurse Zabe! ❤️
The dermaplast however stung like none other 😬
I've been trying so hard to conceive my first and you are an actual angel 🥺 these videos comfort so many women 💛
I’ve heard great things about the frida bottles!
Omg really? I’m gonna be a ftm in June and was gonna make padsicles and the main ingredient is aloe Vera. I guess I won’t use it
I just put a little water on the pads and freeze, nothing else.
We don’t use them in the uk we just get told to use normal pads after birth even if you tore
I still remember reading birth stories before I had my first baby and one lady told the story of recovery from her 4th degree tear, lovingly referring to it as her 'vaganus'. Kinda made me a little nervous lol.
😳😬 Definitely not something you want to hear when you're about to deliver your first baby!
But it does work well as a scared straight warning for teens...
The stitches were so painful and sex just doesn't feel as good as it used to even though it healed very well
I never heard of it beforehand and I tore up besides the urethra and up to right next to the clitorous 😭 (tore through the hood)
Wow, mama! Sounds like you had a lot going on with your delivery! Remember to take it easy and give yourself grace to rest and heal. 💗
I am almost 32 weeks and I. LOVE. YOUR. VIDEOS. I have been watching them since before ttc and throughout my pregnancy. I feel educated and prepared for my birth and as I start my journey as a new mom. You are the best, Elizabeth!!!
💗💗💗 Good luck with your delivery!
I'm not a mom so I'm a little bit uneducated on this topic, although I try to learn everything I can because is just a good way to help a friend, just be his personal Google hehe
Btw you are awsome! Keep up the good work!
I am going to be a mom soon, and also from Portugal! It would be a great idea to give us a list of the things you give in the hospital, because we don't have it. Those circular pads are interesting!
Ah, ok! I can definitely work on making an amazon wishlist or store front or whatever it’s called!
@@Nurse_zabe thank you so much!
Agree. Same with me. My tearing and epesiotomy got infected and I also lost a stictch. Took months to heal and the haemorrhoids also
Girl I had no epidural and the stitching was the worst pain I totally wish I could’ve asked for numbing or something
Thank you so much for all of your videos!! Im pregnant with my first and i feel so much more informed by watching everything you put out!
I just had my baby on the 17th. I ended up tearing upwards ... been having the worse trouble with this so thank you for this video 💕
Aw, mama that is so tough! Hopefully some of my tips help. Keep using that squirt bottle! 💗
My first child was a 4th degree, my second was a 3rd degree and my third was no tearing. Im 37wks now and hoping for another no tear
thank you posting I had a first degree tear but a lot of blood loss you give me hope the next few will be better
🤞🏻🤞🏻
@@Nikki-ks6wi i hope you have a healthy tear free delivery!
You’re so strong! I’d be freaking out lol. I’m 16 weeks pregnant with my first, due in October and terrified to tear 🥺
@@larissagutierrez2894 dont worry. Even if you do tear you wont really notice because that little person in your arms makes you forget all of the uncomfortableness
You are an angel on RUclips, seriously. I feel so armed with knowledge going into the labor room later this year. Hoping to be a model patient :p
Your videos give me so much peace in mind! I swear all first time mamas need to watch your videos! Thank you for sharing this information, you’re the best 💖
💗
I loved this video! Can you make a video all about hemorrhoids? Thank you!
I can certainly make a short one! A lot of care is similar to post tearing.
Love your videos, thanks a lot. I am due on July for the first time, I wish I could have you as my nurse❤ You infuse courage and peace.
I’m so terrified of tearing during birth😩 Thank you for this video! I am due in October 🥺🙏🏼
How did you do? 💜
Here's some tips I have if you do end up dealing with trauma down there:
The padsicles are tempting, but I'm glad my doctor recommended I don't use them as it helped along my healing.
Thank you for this! I am just about 48 post delivery and feel so much more ready to take on this discomfort!
Yay! Hope things are feeling even better now!
What type of oils are safe for massaging to prevent tearing? Would coconut oil be okay, or something else?
Amaya Celestia Yes coconut oil works 😊
I used evening primrose oil, they sell the capsules at target. Get a pin and pop a hole in it and use that. I didn't tear at all with my 1st and it snapped back afterwards
Extra virgin olive oil should be good.
My doc recommended Vit E oil
I love the anology with the paper when explaining an episiotomy
@@Nurse_zabe Oooh ok thanks!
Not all hospitals have these (we tested them out but didn’t end up ordering them). But mamas do really seem to like them if they’re available!
Thank you for once again helping educate through this stage of motherhood. One week PP and going to use these recovery tips!
Have you ever heard of the husband stitch? Been reading up on it and it’s scary. I’m trying for a baby right now and so shocked by this kind of stitch x
Hayley TheKat its not very common and if any male doctors are more prone to do it.
