    Quick note: Jay says that the oculus inside out tracking is used to determine the rotation and position of the headset in space but it’s actually a gyroscope and other pieces of hardware, like a modern smartphone, that determines rotation. So really the inside out tracking only determines position of both the controllers and headset

    • @jaybratt
      @jaybratt  3 года назад +5

      Thanks Median! I have a bad habit of under explaining when I think a video is going to run long. Oculus insight (inside out tracking) is mostly used for 3d positioning but unlike some headsets that tend to drift over time it also uses the insight tracking to track the rotation of the headset as well. IMU's, or Inertial Measurement Units like the gyroscope track it's real time turning and rotation but over time tend to lose track of the space and this is when you get the dreaded "drift" where the room has turned 90 degrees or more from where you started. Oculus looked to correct this so they had their insight tracking also determine rotation (which is unusual) to prevent this. The IMUs track the fast movements but it uses the 3d map of the room to also track it. That would've been a lot to put in the video but it's a good reminder to be more clear in future videos. Thanks Gamer!

    *ANOTHER SOLUTION FOR TRACKING ISSUES*
    For some reason this hasn't really been mentioned by oculus and hopefully this will help someone... If you have Xmas lights on a Xmas tree etc, turn them off. Nice to include the update about frequencies, since the US AC power runs at 60hz, which would cause the infrared sensors to go out of sync with the light bulb.

    I turned my headset's "Headset Tracking" off which restarted it. Then, I was stuck in a completely stationary 360 degree view, similar to how the Go's tracking is where I can't move my head or controllers forward and backwards.
    Since then, whenever I tried re-enabling the Headset Tracking option and restarting, nothing happened. Changing the refresh rate didn't help and trying to adjust the Guardian controls did absolutely nothing. Upon turning on the headset, it always says "Tracking off, Guardian disabled".

    • @jaybratt

      Oh no I'm sorry to hear that. You could do a factory reset (hold volume down and power at the same time) this would reset it to the state when you bought it meaning you could lose some high scores or data but it should definitely fix it. Might be worth contacting support.oculus.com first to see what they say though.

      To be fair though, the Quest 1 fails far more easily to this than the Quest 2 does, never seen my hands or virtual controllers fly across the playspace in the Q2 like it tends to happen in the Q1 every now and then. CV1 tracking is completely garbage with mirrors involved though, only works with all reflective surfaces within the trackers' FOV completely covered up. Same with TrackIR BTW, a pre-VR 6dof headtracker that basically uses the same method.

    I wasn’t too sure about the battery thing. As far as life goes, a good rechargeable lasts almost as long as a primary cell. Normally battery devices take in more voltage than they need, and step down from there. BUT, I have noticed tracking issues on my Rift S controllers since switching now that you brought it up. So every color of LED has a nominal voltage. It just so happens that IRLEDs have a nominal voltage of 1.4v. They’ll still illuminate at 1-1.2v, but at a much lower brightness. The rest of the controller works fine because it’s probably a 0.5-1v system with a regulator in front of it.

    • @jaybratt
      @jaybratt  Год назад +2

      Oof! Question: how often are you changing batteries on your S? I got to the point I was changing them every play session so I cut holes in my grips and ran chargers through them: ruclips.net/video/tjGQa6BOTCw/видео.html

      @@jaybratt I probably get about 24-36 hours out primary or rechargeable cells. I played 4 hours a day for a whole week on one set once. If you're talking about the lithium rechargeables that charge via USB cable, I know those vary pretty wildly in capacity from brand to brand. They give you the whole 1.5v, but lack in the low draw capacity of NiMH. I think "Project Farm" did a test on Lithium rechargeables, NiMH rechargeables, and primarys. It was bad enough that I just decided to upgrade my NiMH collection instead. At this point, the only option for the best performance is just sticking to primaries. I keep a magazine on my desk I printed from Thingaverse.

    1:31 Or 50 if you're in Europe or anywhere where you got a 50Hz power grid.
    1:35 I only ever used ~10 year old sanyo eneloops or the more recent eneloop pro from Panasonic (they bought sanyo a while back) and never had problems except for the obvious ones (like mirrors interfering), even with the Reverb G2 where so many people recommended getting NiZn rechargables with 1.5V. To be fair, those eneloops are just rad. I'd never use anything else or even disposables anymore unless there'd be something even better. I basically replaced every AA and AAA thingies with those and got a decent charging device (a BC700) that doesn't try to overcharge them and leaves you the choice of how fast they're being charged (200, 500 or 700mA), I typically just use the default low setting to make them last longer. And it shows, got my first ones back in 2008 and they're still good.

    Ok very nice video on tracking but a lot of people haven't had any problems with tracking the only ones that have had issues with tracking have been users who have a damaged headset out of the box or a bad camera or a bad battery in the controller is mostly what i have seen its cool you can turn on 60HZ that neat i have to say for beat saber and other fast paced games but that is going to eat your battery life on your controllers the more HZ you play with i would recommend some nice rechargable batterys for the quest and quest 2

They have huge VR arenas you can walk around in and you use backpack PCs with inside out tracked headsets so you can walk anywhere. The room you play in is this massive open room with all these zig zag patterns on the walls to help it track. Google ZERO LATENCY VR and you'll see it in the background of all the images. They told us that's purposeful to make the headsets track really well

    Depends on the batteries let me explain energizer recharagable batteries do work but there is a catch and a big learning curve so when you buy energizer batteries and your thinking oh charger and batteries for 19.99 great deal. no it isnt the batteries that come in the charger set with the energizer batteries are lower voltage batteries buy another set of energizer battery's without the charger those are usually the 3,000MAH batteries with 1.5V

      You're talking about specifically linking it to your pc with a cable? You can try a repair of the Oculus software to see if it helps it through. Different usb ports also can effect it. Lastly you might have an underpowered usb port and using a powered hub might also help. Sorry I don't have a solid answer that will definitely work though.

    • @rustykoenig3566
      @rustykoenig3566 2 года назад

      I have always used the "water" anology to describe it. (Ya, ya... I know... lol).
      But it does good at giving a "simple idea" of what it is to the "clueless". Amp = the amount of current and Volts = the pressure of the current like water going through a hose, the hose carries the full amount of the water and when it comes to a spray nozzle it can either come out very hard and fast or it can come out slow and gentle depending on how you set the nozzle BUT it can NEVER spray more water than the hose is carrying.
      I don't know why people cringe at this anology for a "simple" explanation of it because it does give a good easy to remember real world model to compare it to without going into the "geek stuff" most clueless people dont't want or need :).
      It is absolutely mind boggling how many people are clueless about something like a phone charger that they use a LOT in their life... They get a new one and complain it is "slow" to charge and have no idea what # tells you how fast it will charge... and they get a 1 amp or 1.5 amp charger instead of the 2A or 2.5A one (and you still have to check those too because it might have 3A labeled on it but only 1.5A on each port). Once again I fall back on the "water" analogy... If you want to fill a pool with water it will not fill any faster by using the small high powered jet setting on your nozzle because the hose only delivers so much water.... you need a bigger HOSE to fill it up faster.

      Outside can be very tricky because sunlight will blow out the cameras and make them useless. If you can do it under an awning or in a shaded area it's much better. Technically they say never to play outside so be careful you don't take the headset off and leave it in the sun, the sun on the inner lenses is like ants under a magnifying glass, burn a hole right into the inner screen

      @@jaybratt I only play at night when it's not as hot out... blade and sorcery can be very grueling exercise when you're not using the controller. I'm starting to figure out some ways to cheese the enemies so it's becoming less exercise... I may have to try some AI mods to make it challenging again.

    I homemade knuckle straps with the wrist strap on the controller. It ties around the ring, so does that affect the tracking. Also, the tracking for the guardian floor level is the problem, it only goes down when i kneel down, not when I touch the floor with the controller

    • @jaybratt
      @jaybratt  4 года назад +1

      I used to make my own straps with wii straps wrapped around my hands! The floor thing is weird, are the controllers fully powered on and tracked? It sounds like it's trying to gauge the floor height from the headset instead of the controllers.

    There's so much stuff you need for this VR headset. You need anti-fog cloth, elite headstrap, a face cushion thats more comfortable and sweat proof, 1.5v batteries, a portable battery for extra battery life for the headset itself, headphones, a chromecast to show on a TV screen and a case or a charging dock, i also bought grips for the controllers which arent really needed but help and feel more comfortable.

    • @jaybratt
      @jaybratt  3 года назад +2

      Don't forget the elite straps are prone to breaking so you need a backup for that too... Aww the list goes on

      @@jaybratt It sure does. I wish it was built initially to last and with comfort. Mustve been all that cost reduction. Thats how they sell. A very common tactic is to sell something cheap then reduce the quality of the product.
      I will have to see if the elite headband will break. Ive only seen a few instances. People said the same thing for the PSVR having so many issues and mine turned out perfectly fine for years. Just dont beat it to a pulp im guessing.

      That's interesting about the psvr, I've been a day one owner and I've seen a lot of people saying it's the most comfortable and durable. If it had better tracking it would've been considered one of the best vr headsets ever I think, the hand tracking just really messed up the experience

      @@jaybratt my issue with the PSVR is the terrible tracking and resolution. The resolution feels like looking through mosquito netting. And then it has a wire that gets in the way. The head strap is now deteriorating as well. The material is falling apart all over my head when I play. Another recent thing I discovered are little black dots appearing on the screen. I think the interior has material starting to fall apart. Maybe its paint. I started tapping on the headset and it gradually went away.
      The issues I heard about PSVR is that knob in the back of the headstrap snapping off. Saw the pictures. Also the wire can get damaged and the whole thing needs to be replaced. Those were the complaints I heard when I got it.
