  • Mangel Halto is probably our third favorite shore dive in Aruba. The entry/exit is really quite easy and it often has little current. The bowl shaped site is not a traditional reef but there is still lots to see…even if spread out a bit. There are lots of anemone and it seems to be popular for crustaceans at night. Also, check out the sunken fishing trawler.
    We want to encourage more shore diving, so this video provides some guidance where the site is how to dive it and what you may see there. If you want to skip to or review specific topics the section timings are as follows.

      Thank you so much Daniel. I finally decided to pull the trigger on a second tattoo (a music volute) which I first spotted at Mangel Halto. It holds a special place in my heart. Leslie...not as much. :-)

    I love your Shore diving series, thank you for all the info. We are going on a cruise that will be stopping in Aruba, and probably only have time to visit one dive site. Witch shore dive site do you recommend?

      Thank you so much David. That's a touch question. Do you prefer shore diving or boat diving? For shore diving it would either be Tres Trapi (north) or Rocky Beach (south). Both were fantastic. Tres Trapi has a mini wall along the coast with fallen boulders/slabs with tons of fish. Rocky Beach is a bit harder, but has more reef and the be sure to explore the protected shallow area if the visibility is good. For boat diving, we recommend the wrecks. You can't go wrong with the Renaissance Planes, Jane C or the Perdenales. Let us know how your diving went!

    A follow up on my earlier remark.... we actually made 2 more trips to Aruba since then. We did go diving w/JADS, who was amazing and we also rented tanks several times from them. LOVE Mango Halto. I think the ease of entry and the fact that there is a combination of reef plus "shipwreck". Adds a nice little variety....:) Thanks again for sharing the videos!

      Have you tried Tres Trapi up north? That is just as easy as Mangel Halto and has tons of fish (and a few turtles) close to shore. Not so much of a reef unless you go pretty far out, but large schools and a very good wall along the coast with lots of life. Check it out next time if you have been there yet. You won't be disappointed. :-)

    I just was snorkeling in mango halto some years ago, ans it was truly amazing. It seems it has gotten worse. Discovered it randomly

      Oh no! Worse how? (people, reef condition) We are looking are jumping from Bonaire to Aruba for a bit next year. We miss the sites and seeing some island friends...and it will give us a chance to update the videos as those were some of the first ones we did.

    Thank you! Great videos. I do get sad though, when I see the amount of dead coral in all these places :( Heart breaking. I've been all through the Caribbean, parts of the Mediterranean and even Hawaii (far far away from all our pollution) and the coral is still dying off or dead. There was that discovery of dumped 45 gal drums of DDT off the coast of California and I wanted to just cry. WHAT are we doing to our poor planet??

      Hi Binder. Indeed, we have seen the oceans slowly degrade as well. We are currently in Grand Cayman, which we have visited six times over twelve years and it is in the worst shape we can remember...although that is exacerbated by a bout of stony coral tissue loss disease. Hopefully, our videos inspire a bit more diving and, thereby, appreciation for the scarce and precious resources marine environments provide.
      Unabashed Plug: Our first Grand Cayman video of Sunset House should be dropping tomorrow. :-)

    Hi, do you think this spot would be good for snorkeling? I am thinking about taking my family there next summer.

    • @TropicLens
      @TropicLens  3 года назад

      Hi Chris. Overall the site is very shallow and only gets deeper in the bowl. There are mangroves to the left of the platform which offer great spots for juveniles and we did see snorkelers there quite a bit. That said, there are probably (definitely) better snorkeling sites on Aruba. Depending on how long you and your family are staying, you can hit a few of them. In our humble opinion, Tres Trapi would be top of the list...although that is on the northside of the island. If you are staying south, check out Hole In The Wall (aka Rocky Beach.) That is just south of Mangel Halto and the reef starts pretty shallow just outside the wall. Hope this helps, but let us know if you have any other questions. Travel safely!

    we're going to Aruba in a wk, where can we rent tanks?

    • @TropicLens
      @TropicLens  3 года назад +1

      Hi Terri. That depends on where you are staying. :-) JADS is on the south end of the island, Pure Diving Aruba is near the airport and Mermaid is near Eagle Beach. We have used all three. JADS and Mermaid have generous fills and Pure was the least expensive when we were there. Keep us posted on your adventures (if you have time) and let us know if you have any questions. Random tip: Super Food is best for most things, but check out Ling & Sons for produce and meats. Hope this helps. David

      @@TropicLens if u get this twice, forgive me.... I'll definitely let y'all know how it goes! We're used to Curacao & Bonaire's shore dives, so we're looking forward to getting "acquainted" w/Aruba.... I did reach out to a couple of shops, Happy Divers & I THOUGHT Mermaids, but cant be sure now. They told me they didn't just rent tanks. Happy told us there "really wasn't that many good shore dives" anyway.... ;) I get it, they want us to charter w/them. We plan on maybe one 2 tank dive w/someone, but we're used to going out on our own. Thanks so much for the info!
