  • It’s just amazing that we can dive Bonaire time and time again, even visiting the same sites over and over and still find new creatures. In November, crown cones, margintail congers and blackedge triplefins were among our first time captures.
We also saw some incredible underwater behaviors, like bar jacks mating, a group of west indian fighting conchs gathering in the shallows to lay eggs, a red reef hermit crab looking to change shells and a juvenile conch literally jumping away from a music volute. (heck out the curious sharpnose puffer at the end of that clip!)
It was another terrific month! Thanks for watching.
UNCOMMON SEA LIFE AND FIRST TIME CAPTURE IDENTIFICATION
We primarily use two sources to validate sea life we don’t recognize. The first is Florent's Guide To TheTropical Reefs which can be found at reefguide.org. Its free and has lots of pictures, but is not comprehensive. The second is “The Reef Set: Reef Fish, Reef Creature and Reef Coral (3 Volumes)”. The box set can be found on Amazon; however with all our travels, we also purchased the eBooks (fishid.com/stor...) so we don’t have to carry an extra five pounds of paper in our luggage. :-) We also reference other sources from time to time as well.

We’ve been watching for a while and are always impressed with your videos! We’re here on the island for a couple weeks and would love to dive with you guys or just grab coffee and chat.

Thank you for the kind words, Ben, and we would have loved to get together. I use the past tense because I am writing this from the Miami airport. We needed to vacate our long term rental for three months as the owners like to come back over the winter. (Can’t blame them. 🙂) So we’re visiting family for the holidays and then going to Indonesia and Curaçao. We’ll be back on Bonaire in April. So, expect a few non-Caribbean videos for a while and, if you come back to Bonaire next year, let us know. We’re always happy to make new friends.

@@TropicLens Oh neat! Totally understandable, the island is a popular place over the holidays for sure! We met a few other photographers/videographers earlier this week and had fun chatting it up. Really amazing to see all the great shots and content that people are making! You’re a bit more active diving than us, but we’re either planning a Japan or Philippines trip for next year and maybe Bonaire in the winter again as well. Looking forward to new videos and someday hanging out on the island. Safe travels!

Enjoying your videos very much! I'm snorkeled in Bonaire but am going to try a Discover Scuba course on this next trip. Any recommendation which reef to start on? Buddy Dive offers a tour of their own reef, whereas Dive Friends offers Bari Reef. If your first (and only for now) dive was going to be one of those, which would you pick? Thanks!

Hard to go wrong either way. My last trip I stayed at Den Laman and did Bari Reef day and night. Entry/exit from the dock is super convenient there. The corals in the shallows just North at Sand Dollar offered a lot to see too.

We LOVED Bari Reef, but it hasn’t been too accessible due to the construction at Sunset Beach. 😕 That started after they completed the Chogogo Resort that had reports of negative reef impacts. It was good when we dove it last year, but can’t vouch for it now. Buddy’s Reef is good…to the extent that SCTLD has not been kind to the corals. If you have a car, we might suggest driving south to Angel City, Aquarius or Invisibles as those fairly easy entries…although not as easy as having a dock. 🙂
