  • It’s hard to believe that after more than 350 dives on Bonaire, we’re still seeing so many new things every month. April brought us nine first time captures including a shortnose batfish, spiny fileclam, whitenose pipefish, Caribbean twospot octopus, green bubble weed, spoteye hermit crab, Atlantic hairy triton (shell), yellowhead jawfish (with eggs) and a club-tipped anemone.
We also witnessed some amazing behaviors, like a music volute that fall down a sandy embankment, landing upside-down and then turning itself upright again. Then there were mating greater soapfish, walking slate pencil urchin and two-spined sea stars, and a terrific macro shot of a spotted cleaner shrimp nibbling on something. Plus, we saw a uncommon critters, among which were an orange ball corallimorph, fingerprint flamingo tongue, three rowed sea cucumber and a rooster tail conch.
Although this is a fairly nice summary, it doesn’t do the footage any justice. You’ll have to watch the video for a better experience. :-)
UNCOMMON SEA LIFE AND FIRST TIME CAPTURE IDENTIFICATION
We primarily use two sources to validate sea life we don’t recognize. The first is Florent's Guide To TheTropical Reefs which can be found at reefguide.org. Its free and has lots of pictures, but is not comprehensive. The second is “The Reef Set: Reef Fish, Reef Creature and Reef Coral (3 Volumes)”. The box set can be found on Amazon; however with all our travels, we also purchased the eBooks (fishid.com/stor...) so we don’t have to carry an extra five pounds of paper in our luggage. :-) We also reference other sources from time to time as well.

Right!?!? Soooo many. It was a good month. This month has been average (so far); but we're planning on diving the full moon next week which always seems to bring a few surprises.

Awesome video been watching for years now. Bonaire is one of a couple of places left in the Caribbean I haven't been to that I really want to, and big part of it is how awesome it looks on your videos. Your videos helped me a lot when I visited Grand Cayman and Curacao, I just freedive, so your depth profiles when you visit places is great, anything 60 feet and under is fair game for me.

Wow, thank you for being a loyal fan. It is kind of weird to actually read "watching for years"; but I guess we have been doing it for that long now. :-) There is a free diving school on Bonaire. Not that you need one, but the island has support and a community for that activity. Cliff has some nice walls in your range.

@TropicLens we will be on the Island 6th-16th November. Hopefully we can get a fun dive in. This trip we will have 5 divers and my wife who doesn't dive. Finally after years of going talked her into tagging along.

@@johnmontgomery2735 Nice group! Does your wife snorkel? There are certainly plenty of sites good for both diving and snorkeling...and a few spas. 🙂 Ping us when you get closer and we can get something locked in. The full moon in on the 15th, which is the day before you leave; but there should be some good/uncommon things to see in the days leading up.

@TropicLens she has went snorkeling once and isn't too comfy in the ocean but maybe I can change that. I will snorkel with her a little but I want to dive and she's the only mom diver of the group. So a bit of a conundrum

Batfish, if I'm correct, are relatives of the frogfish, and as such, also have water-jets used in propulsion. I believe that's what the openings at the back are. I've seen frogfish blowing water out of them as they bounce along the bottom (don't see the water but the puffs of sand the jets create).

I didn't know they were related Jonnie. It does look like they are from the same Actinopterygii class of marine animal. So interesting! Unfortunately, I can't seem to find anything on water jet locomotion; but will keep looking. The batfish we saw seemed to open and close them sometimes when standing still. Perhaps it's to keep limber? Thank you so much for the impetus to learn more. :-)

@@TropicLens Yes distant cousins; you can see it in their similar morphology and behavior. They are both benthic poor swimming ambush predators that use lures.

We enjoy meeting TropicLens fans and would love to go on a dive with you, Ken. We have some appointments today, but don't currently have anything for tomorrow. If you're leaving leaving on Saturday, perhaps we can get a morning dive in? Send an email to info@tropiclens.com and we can exchange contact information.
