For those who don’t know triggerfish have a bite strong enough to easily disassemble lobsters. So it’s like trying to swim away from a fish sized hole puncher, so it’s way more scary than it seems.
If you wanted some fun fish facts, that's actually an adult female and she is protecting her eggs. Pretty cool that fish can have such strong parental responses
That’s funny because I had the same thing happen to me snorkeling off the Island Moorea . That little sucker got me with some hard nips to my legs that surprised me at first . Then it kept coming at me and I had to fend it off for about 10 yards, and then it went back to where it all started. After talking to a local , it turns out the trigger fish can be very territorial.
Yea I've seen these around while diving. One of the few things in the ocean that worry me. Kicking away with fins out and going horizontal instead of vertical as the diver did here is the way to go. Triggerfish view their territory as a cone so the cone is narrowest at the bottom near their home and as you go up higher in the water the cone expands out further.
Exactly! there is also a longer explainer video on my channel detailing that, please check it out. The odd thing with this fish was that it kept going after me even though I swam away horizontally.
Crazy... while snorkelling I saw a titan trigger fish Today in Maldives, he was feeding, i approached him slowly. He gave a good look at me and the. Swam away
Triggerfish can do some real damage to a human because of their teeth. The reason for the attack was the diver swam through its territory. It was protecting its eggs. He did do the right thing, though. Swimming horizontally takes you out of its territory while swimming upward will only result in the Triggerfish attacking you even more fiercely since its territory goes vertically from the bottom to the surface.
Also, their skin is SUPER tough. Like, when you catch some, and you're cleaning them, you try cutting through it with a knife and you stand there with your jaw on the floor in amazement at how unbelievably hard it is to try to cut through it. Like rawhide leather mixed with Kevlar.
Fun fact: titan triggerfish (species shown in the video) is the largest triggerfish out there and is known to be territorial, especially so during summer when it’s baby season
I remember going diving in Thailand and they warned us to swim sideways, not up from trigger fish since they basically treated their territory as a cone going up from the floor, so swimming up, or even up and sideways wasn't going to help at all.
The same thing happened to me a few years ago, I reacted exactly as you and it kept following me a bit longer tough. That was scary. I’m glad you got in on video.
Trigger fish are naturally aggressive. They'll even reach up out of an aquarium tank to bite your hand. Saw a WW2 story about how if it's a school of trigger fish anyone in the water is in a lot of trouble.

@@zachb8012 To be fair, that fish would do a decent amount of damage if it managed to get a bite in lol. Good thing it was just going for his flippers.
@@WolverineSticker You did inspire me to go looking for titan triggerfish bites. All I can find online is lots of information indicating they're aggressive, lots of pictures of their teeth, a story with no images about a guy getting bit in the neck that kind of sounds like bullshit, and one picture of a pretty tame ankle bite. I've encountered them in the wild, though I've never been chased. I've also ripped bigger holes than that bite in myself by blundering into coral on many occasions. So they're aggressive and may bite, for sure, but the threat of that actually happening appears to be blown wildly out of proportion. You'd be wiser to fear stepping on coral at the beach than being attacked by a trigger fish. If I've learned anything about humanity in the last year it's that we can't resist blowing remotely small risks out of proportion for the sake of some drama.
Was attacked by a triggerfish when I was scuba diving too. Legitimately the most terrifying thing to ever happen to me lmaoo like those things are 50 times smaller than you and they still charge at you like you’re half their size. After that I would get terrified of any triggerfish we swam by, even when there were literally stonefish and lionfish just giving around us
Yep. next few days of diving all I was doing was looking out for them after one really went after me for a good few minutes. Little pricks. I remember thinking it was all a big joke when people would say "oh, triggerfish are bad around there at the moment". Until one goes after you...
Hehe yes. It's actually not that hard to speak underwater. You just have to speak slowly and loudly and the other person will understand you. Just that here it's a fish who doesn't speak English.

If I've learned anything about humanity in the last year it's that we can't resist blowing remotely small risks out of proportion for the sake of some drama.
this fish must had been a karen in it's past life
haha

baby_sharkk Gaming What?
Incredible, I didn’t know triggerfish were so territorial especially with larger animals.
It greatly varies. This level of aggression only exists when they breed, and then not in all of them, seemingly.
@@pacificklaus8189 awesome how you explore the oceans with a great deal of knowledge ! do you work in marine biology?

Diver: *minding his own business recording a cute little turtle innocently*
Tigerfish:"Now that's an avengers level threat!"
diver: recording turtle doing its thing
fish: and i took that personally
Lol you can hear him say “fucking asshole” even though he’s underwater
Hehe yes. It's actually not that hard to speak underwater. You just have to speak slowly and loudly and the other person will understand you. Just that here it's a fish who doesn't speak English.
@@pacificklaus8189 lol I had no idea trigger fish get triggered
"Oi! OI! Yeah I'm talkin to you bub! Why you filming! Cant a turtle eat in peace on this reef anymore! What are you, some pervert!?! Get outta here! That's right, swim away!"
