  • What happens when someone who has depended on acceptance from others loses that approval? Former pastor Jerry DeWitt shares his journey of learning to go through rejection and disapproval and come out the other side smiling.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

Thats why I like my religion Islam so much, because at the very center of it lies the concept of "ikhlas" which is do every good for sake of pleasing your Creator. Other people are participants of the test just like you. "Riya" is the act of doing something for public approval and is highly warned against. There were people who went to extreme and publicly humiliated themselves to make sure that everyone thinks bad of them so that they are completely free of "Riya". That is extreme of course, our Prophet never advised such act. But is shows you how central is that concept to Islam. At the same time in order to please your Creator you should be as much helpful to his creation and show mercy as you can. But your intention is only pleasing the Creator. Quran 76:8-9 "And they give food, out of their love for Him (Allah), to the needy, and the orphan, and the captive, Saying to them, “We feed you only for the sake of Allah; we have no intention of (receiving) either a return from you or thanks. " Peace! ;-)

Christianity is the same - it's not about people pleasing. Jesus was proof of that.

This is an old reply, but any future viewer might appreciate a conflicting view on this. People pleasing the creator as said by your religious leaders. Is people pleasing to a similar extent. Whenever great things happen in life, that is the creator's approval as you see, and whenever bad things happen, surely you aren't being good enough. That is the definition of people pleasing.
And that is leaving out people pleasing the also people pleasing family members, friends and pastors/etc which are also hard to break away this habit from.
It's like a hierarchy of people pleasers Creator > Religious Leaders > Family/Friends > You

Instead of doing everything for a "creator" (Name your God here). Why not just do it because you're a good and decent human being that see's other human beings in need? Why put anything more into it than it's what you would want someone to do for you?

Care to add the closed captions here, please? There are million and million of the whole audience who are Deaf, Hard of Hearing, People lost the ability to hear included our Veterans who lost their hearing ability at wars so be considerate and kindness to add the closed captions on this video, not only this there are other videos because of lack of accessibility of receiving information through reading subtitles, hmm. Thanks.

Not sure if I am feeling right, I am unable to sense his authenticity in his speech, it came across as structured motivational talk but whether the speech coming from his inner self, I am not so sure.

You can tell he used to be a Bible-belt pastor - it's cringe-worthy. He says, "I unlearned the need for public approval, in favour of facts," then stands on stage cracking 'nekkid' jokes and failing to offer anything but subjective experience and opinion.
