    Damn, it's nice to see an indie souls-like. Souls-likes are amazing but there is just sooooo much effort put into them, it's inspiring to see someone tackle making them. Looking forward to the next Devlog :)

      You should check out "Another Crab's Treasure", it's made by a small indie dev studio and despite the cute cartoon graphics, it's insanely fun and just as hard as any souls like :3

    not gonna lie. you had me at souls-like. I want to make one myself and literally was thinking about this yesterday as I was putting together my ideas and working on a design document.
    I have a developer friend (I am more of the environment artist/game designer type) and was just thinking about reaching out to pitch the idea.

      Well its not really a month when you total up all the time it would have taken to actually make everything shown in this video. A lot of the reasoning behind choices to me seems more like a justification rather than an actual decision that was made with a purpose in mind. Animations being a big one. Mocap is not used as often as he may have alluded too. Animations take a lot of practise and time dedication. This choice in this case is usually made because the developers just cant or wont learn it. A project like this becomes vastly more ambiguous when the skills needed are lacking going into it and you have to rely on outsourcing everything without a budget. Theres nothing wrong with using assets. But in most cases with something as expansive as a souls like, it will become repetitive and stale due to lacking the ability to just , well, make it.

      yes, that's true. Mocap and generally assets like 3D models are very expensive in big projects...

    Awesome video. Would be nice if you included some more details while developing. For instance, in the end here we see the fantastic result, but would be nice if you showed the process of going from just the character to the whole Soulslike atmosphere; how did the first version look like? What steps did you take to go from any generic game to Soulslike? Just some feedback for future videos. :)

    i really enjoyed your video ! but i'm kinda sad about the ref you mentioned, they are great, but the tiktok trend at the beginning trully felt dark fantasy, and the artist you shown after...
    well i can see how they can inspire but nowadays everyone is going super crazy on monster design, creating all kind of odd malformed creature.. i wish we could get a more grounded dark fantasy, relying on gobelin, slimes, all those basics, with the kinda 60's vibe from the tiktok mentioned earlier, this would be awesome (just like DEEP DOWN was carrying this feeling, sadly capcom never gave any news abt this project and it's been 11 years haha!)
    hopefully this will be coop :D i'll keep an eye on you guys ! wish u the best

Looks great by the way! Inspiring to see other indies tackling the elusive “Souls game”. They are alot of work haha

    Well explained devlog with an interesting and cool concept and inspiration.
    As a person working with Unreal Engine for a while - I see quite a few potential fundemental flaws with the tools you chose to use for the development of the prototype/demo.
    Realistic assets - Marketplace is a good place to purchase a variety of them, but the problem with that is that they will always have conflict of art style and art direction. Often they also use expensive materials with 8k textures to impress the buyer but they dont translate into the actual game-projects. Not to mention that your variety of enemies also have to fit inside an artstyle which also can be found in a marketplace but again with a different artstyle, texture size, normals, and even lightmaps.
    Metahumans are also very heavy to run despite being advertised as flexible when it comes to LOD. But I suppose if you are only using metahuman on a main character it shouldbt be a big deal.
    Be careful with Chaos destruction. It is not that expensive. Just make sure not to cut the mesh into million pieces on fracture.
    Animation is massive part as to why some soulslikes are good/bad. Mixamo is good only for a prototype as you said. In a game like this - animation warping and root motion are crucial fundamental techniques. In a soulslike - you can only go so far on an animation movement component.
    Nevertheless - good luck with your project. Inde soulslike is a sisyphus task and I wish you the best of luck

      Thank you! And I agree with it all, in the next devlog I’m actually showcasing motion warping and new set of animations + why mixamo is not good for this, but a comment about enviro is also to the point - in the future I’m planning to touch on Quixel here, any thoughts?

      @@rafalobrebski Quixel is a good tool for materials and assets for games. That said I dont have that muche exp when it comes to Quixel. I suppose you can put them in the game and then debug the optimization via shader complexity etc. I just dont expect photo realistic materials to be super efficient. But i might be wrong

      There is a few tools I know of from the Asset Store, like the DestroyIt, but you can do quite a bit with mesh manipulation in the engine itself

    Very cool devlog! I really like the first part of the video where you talk about inspirations, since they almost 100% align with mine.
    I'm big fan of Ghost of Tsushima and Sekiro and really hope that this game takes more of that direction rather than silly panic rolling like in souls games. I mean you can still have rolls, but main aspect could be small evades and parries. But anything you guys decide I'm fine with, after you mentioned 80s dark fantasy, berserk and some cool artists which I like.
    By the way game cover on 3:50 really looks like Berserk 1997, when Guts enters castle to fight Zodd.

    Awesome! Are you making it multiplayer since you're using GAS? Brokered Peer-to-peer with someone like Edgegap would probably work great for a game like this. If you go with multiplayer I hope you give some details on your networking solution for non-player initiated events like parry knockback.

    How did you achieve such visuals in your project? I'm also inspired by this '80s fantasy style, and it seems like you managed to reproduce it! Is it just light adjustment with post-processing, or maybe plugins; shaders on models; perhaps little tricks like LUT for color correction? I'm curious to know.

    I've also wanted to make a AAA quality game by myself. Unfortunately, I don't have any experience. Also my partners (wife and baby) distracting me all the time. Since you are sharing your process, I'll follow along and see if i can take more of a part time approach. Please make some shorts highlighting tips or cool stuf or introduce a tool.     Useful Tips: make base clases then create your weapon and items that inherit from the base clases and to communicate with weapon and items use interfaces to make sure that the project scales easily

    I'm a lurker in the Indie Game development scene as a VFX Artist (in the Film industry +8 years) but I've been watching indie game dev videos for months and fantasizing about switching industries and pursuing gaming instead. Already know Unreal, which I've used for film projects, and some personal gaming projects (unfinished, of course...).
    BTW, while listening with my in ear monitors, I noticed in your audio mix , your voice is set to stereo, and its slightly shifted to the right. I find it very distracting. I thought I had an issue with my hearing, or my ear pieces were failing.
    I would balance the audio channels, or make it mono. My two cents!

    Bardzo ciekawy materiał. Osobiście zajmuje się projektami 3D ale w taki sposób, że powstają z nich fizyczne przedmioty i moim zdaniem to jest największa słabość wszelkich deweloperów, że ich projekty potem ciężko skomercjalizowac poza wersją digitalna, oczywiście to ona przynosi największe zyski ale możliwość materializacji przedmiotów może być nie małą częścią biznesu o czym wiem np taki Disney.

    When creating a game how everything is all together is that how you make a game? Let me further explain. When making a game do you do a map in 1 project and than do another project for guns, another for your character and movements, and than combine it all into the map project after it’s all done?     Quick tip to improve your videos: Never and I mean NEVER upload your videos in HDR. It is industry standard to upload videos in SDR. If you accidentally shot and edited your hole video in HDR and now can’t find the export to SDR button, that’s because there isn’t one, export the video normally and use a software like handbrake to “fix” your video.

    we will see each other in 40 years then. No way you can do a game the size and quality of real AAA titles.
    not even big studios are able to do that. And most games made by indie or solo devs in ue5 tend to just "look good" that's it.
    I'm critical about this, since I mostly hate UE since the 3rd version and the indie/solo dev experience was always bad.
    Only a handful were able to deliver in almost 15 years!
    Sorry for being to critical, but you setup yourself for failure by saying AAA, this is straight lying to the faces of your viewers and customers.
    *@9:30 there are plenty of new technolgies and I also played around with motion capture at home and bought a 150€ set off amazon. It works but it is still quite a lot of work for a single person tho

      I wasn’t creating any horror game :) video you are referring to is about Callisto Protocol, a game made by Striking Distance Studios. A title is a quote to how their referred to the game and clearly points that it’s about development of Callisto.
