fun fact: the sports talk commentary was recorded by an actual sports commentator, Lonny simmons. the encoding work was dun by Electronic speech systems, one of the earlyest suppliers of speech chips. ESS had previously helped with some of the most iconic pieces of synthetic speech, from Evil otto's death threts from Berzerk to the voice of Elven Atombender from impossible mission on the c64.

For me sega Saturn and Dreamcast was the systems where World Series baseball got its upgrades, World Series 95 on the 32x only had minor color tweaks and that zoom in which most people didn’t enjoy. The greatest part is World Series baseball lived up until the ps2/Xbox versions of the game 2k3 , then it was converted as the last sega version for 2k4 or ESPN baseball 2004 and then to Major League Baseball 2k5 made by take two interactive before turning it over to 2k sports in 2k6 until it’s death on 2k13 when 2k lost its license rights. To this day I don’t know why 2k didn’t get a license for just Nintendo or Xbox cause they allowed that type of licensing under Sony’s exclusive contract. I’m a huge baseball gaming nerd and enjoyed hearing you talk about the games for rbi and World Series. I ended up selling off my World Series 95 years ago when I saw that it’s value was so high and I wasn’t extremely fond of that version of the game.

In its day I absolutely Loved the original WSB And its sequels. They were the best simulation style games of their time. I don't think they aged well at all but most retro sports games don't unless they are arcade style. Sports Talk Baseball for example I can still have fun with. Lastly I suggest you try Triple Play Baseball 96 or Gold on Genesis. I never knew played them until a few years ago but I would say the EA did a great job with those games for the time.

Only thing I really remember about this series I want to say 1995, was when you hit a home run you did like cartwheels and kissed the crowd running the bases at a snail's pace. I really enjoy World Series Baseball and World Series Baseball '95 both on the Genesis. They're great games. Never cared for World Series Baseball starring Deion Sanders for the 32X though, they call it that because Sega wanted Deion Sanders to be the face of Sega Sports back in 1995, hence we got Prime Time NFL Football Starring Deion Sanders for the Genesis (the fifth installment of the Sega Sports NFL series (formerly known as the Joe Montana football series until NFL '95)) and World Series Baseball starring Deion Sanders for the 32X.

  • @hunter371
    @hunter371 Год назад

I appreciate this review comparing these games. One thing not mentioned, which may be obvious but I really enjoyed, was all the enhanced controls you had at your disposal. I don't remember any other Genesis games that allowed you to set how your infield defense was setup and how your outfielders were set. With a runner on first, I'd set the infielders to Double Play shift, try to force a ground ball and hope for the 6-4-3 double play. Control of the runners felt better in these games compared to any others, and for that matter control over the defenders waa better than any other baseball game on the Genesis.
These games were very slow, but they could be a lot of fun if you were a baseball nerd. They had Hall of Fame teams which were unheard of. How cool was it to play as Babe Ruth!

World Series Baseball on the (SEGA Saturn) are easily my favorite baseball games, even compared to current-gen console baseball games.

      Definitely worth it.
They found their stride with the new hardware, bringing everything into the game they had originally intended with the better tech.
Very accessible game to play also-- My niece, who started playing softball and is very proficient, I had introduced her to this baseball videogame I grew up playing, and she dove right in easily and mastered the game. I had to laugh when the (great voice audio and commentary) announced to bat some of the baseball greats of that era, and she was intrigued who these sluggers were they announced with excitement.
Also has a lot of game modes, functions and options, and allows you to change things in the game to your liking. And it's a really good versus-play game, especially the Homerun Derby for the ultra-competitive trash-talkers.
Definitely pick them up, they are worth it, especially for the price that you can get them.

For the time these are the best. The thing I like most is that they play like a real game. They have foul balls, slow hits, fast hits, known home runs and some you don't know until they go. It is a lot like a real game, unlike modern games I have played that make the baseball like a rocket, and don't have foul balls on simulation. The only part I do not like is that players are bound to their stats and like fantasy baseball power is what matters more than defense or clutch hitting.

It always bugged me when baseball games would use the next year after their release as the title, Football, Basketball & Hockey can at least say their season ends in that year (Like Madden 20 was released in 2019, but the superbowl is in 2020, NBA 2K20 released in 2019, but season ends in 2020) so baseball to me never made sense, I believe that trend ended by the late 2000s as the baseball games now are back to being titles for the year they are released (Like MLB The Show 20 this year)

'95 was a substantial upgrade to the original WSB in that a full statistical model was added to the game. WSB '96 looks and sounds very much like '95, but it plays quite differently because hitting prowess was drastically and unrealistically toned-downed across the board. You're forced to play "small-ball" in '96, but the controls and mechanics of WSB just aren't suited to that style of gameplay, making '96 the poorest-playing installment in the series. '98 turned the hitting back up, though not to '95 levels.

Sega Sports got REALLY LAZY after 1994. The Joe Montana series starting with NFL ‘95 were just glorified roster updates. Same with the World Series Baseball series. It really sucked if you plunked down $$$ for those titles. Eventually EA followed suit with NBA Live, Madden and the NHL series as well. My guess is the focus on the then next gen PS1, N64 and Saturn had something to do with that.

On the Genesis baseball game WSB you can’t move in the batters box but you can increase your difficulty which allows you to have a batting cursor indicating the barrel of your bat, and you can adjust pitch speed to more realistic levels. It greatly increases the playability and realism.
Also, your commentary from the announcer sounds totally different. Weird.

As much as you didn't like the WSB games they were the true simulation at the time. Baseball is a boring sport at times and these games cover this well. The fundamentals and rules were in the games.Try pulling a double switch in any other game. Remove your DH and see what happens when your pitcher has to bat. These are things that the other games were missing. WSB paid attention to every detail of the game including the boring aspects. I do agree though the inclusion of the sports talk feature makes the first game in the series the best one.

I can't seem to figure out how to advance the baserunners or steal. I'm even thinking maybe I got a bad ROM, but everything else works fine. I;ve gotten them to move here and there, but can't seem to do it consistently, I can't find anything online about it. It's so annoying when you get a clear double or maybe even a triple and the douchebag stops like an idiot on first or just stands there until the ball hits the ground on a line drive that will clearly not be caught

I remember all the talk back in the 90's that WSB was the premiere baseball game. Wasn't much of a sports game fan, but I did have a curiosity, as there were always exceptions to be found. My first experience with the Series was WSB 2 on Saturn. I really enjoyed that game to my surprise, but did not like 98 on Saturn. WSB 2K2 on DC was just ok imo. I did own the 32X version for awhile, and was sorely disappointed that it resembled the Genesis games so much with only a slight extra splash of color and the scaling effect. I was anticipating the CD version, that I always saw advertised, but judging by the rest of the series' early days, we didn't miss anything. One positive in the sound department is that it has the best announcer. Too bad the audience sounds terrible. But listen with headphones and you'll hear the 32X chip is used for the announcer. Much cleaner than 95' and it has a stereo reverb fading effect making it sound like you're in a stadium with fading echos bouncing right and left. Beyond what a Genesis can do alone. Genesis can't fade or do reverb on samples so they showed off the hardware a bit. Too bad they didn't put the same effort into the audience.

Never knew that Sega licensed the Madden engine for the first Joe Montana game. That blows my mind.
I like the Madden games, never played Montana.
Seems like all the old 80s and 90s baseball games I've played have had some annoying faults. Either in gross balance problems in some aspect of the game, or rules not applied correctly, or broken fielding. I've started to play some of my old baseball games recently but I'm surprised how sloppy the genre generally was back then. I guess I didn't notice as much when I was a kid.
In addition to wanting a balanced, well playing game, now I also want season play with statistics tracking and battery save. I should probably grab some of the World Series Baseball games, and maybe the Hardballs also. I don't have any members of those series, maybe I'll like them.
I can definitely do without the "announcer" gimmick. I don't even like listening to national media real life announcers, I sure don't want to listen to a robot telling me jersey numbers and everywhere I've thrown the ball. Maybe we could have 3 robots making overanalytical small talk after every pitch and laughing at each other's jokes, like on ESPN. That might actually be funny.
