I started with a 5 inch and quickly realised it was the wrong decision. Too much power too small a space to fly in ( well learn in), so I got a TinyHawk 2 and that taught me how to fly. Stu is correct.

I had a great time learning how to fly using a Cetus X. I had flown a lot in a simulator before that and wanted something that wasn't just for indoor, something that could handle flying outside too and it has been great. It is still very light, very durable and flies well. I would highly recommend it, just make sure you get the betaflight version and definitely learn in a simulator first.
I still fly it for fun and just for practice, it is just so durable and easy enough to fly around a garden.
I totally agree about starting with something small though, so much less dangerous and it is so much easier to find somewhere to fly, especially somewhere fun. Scale is important with drones, for the Cetus X a decent garden is plenty space, for a cinewhoop you need something larger like a field or a park and for a larger quad or a camera drone like a mini 4 pro or similar you need even more space. Just being able to sit in the garden and fly the Cetus X was so good for learning, I didn't need to think of going anywhere and a smaller drone that is better suited for flying indoors would be even better and much easier to get more flight time in.

Incredibly well spoken. I nodded and agreed on all points. I’m brand new. A month in and I started on a Cetus x, moved onto the cineape25 paired with the same pocket RM and Eachine ev200d and I’m happy with my decisions. I’ve spent a lot of hours on the sim on less weather permitting days and I’m very impressed with the quality on my “budget products” lots of research and 3 days of figuring out how the hell to bind with ELRS. This video is very much needed for new comers like myself and I thank you! Keep on keeping on! New subscriber!

I started off by trying to build my own drone from scratch (as much as possible) during covid lockdowns, for a few years my controller was some spare part potentiometer based gimbals in a frame made of two sheets of wood which then got upgraded to a pretty badly 3D printed frame, this worked very well for over a hundred hours in simulators until the gimbals wore out, so thats when I decided to get a TX16S MK2, which is also when I got my first BNF. The AG01 gimbals would be nice but I could only justify them if I got to a point where the stock gimbals weren't good enough or I managed to wear out the stock gimbals.

I would liken the skill of flying a mini quad to learning to ride a bike, expect to fall and it might seem impossible at first but keep at it and it will feel quite easy, then you can start pushing yourself to do tricks.
The first thing I ordered when I started was a radio and used the old Freerider sim which gave me the muscle memory I needed while building my first miniquad. I built Stew’s first $99 build with the $6 racerstar motors and learned to fly with it.
If I was learning today I would start with a little 2.5 inch or whoop for sure. You won’t be able to get great footage with a GoPro until you’re more experienced IMO so it’s just another expensive thing to break or lose, you can record DVR to track your progress.

Here's my take on FPV. I started FPV without a SIM and I've still haven't flown on s SIM i started out with the baby hawk 2 HD and learned how to fly using Angle mode for the first 3 months until i got the hang of it. Then i went in an open field flew 200 feet up then switched it into acro mode then felt the difference and was like OMFG THIS IS AMAZING and realized i leveled up in the hobby and it felt amazing.
To every first time pilot get HD and start in angle mode and do exactly what i did then you'll feel the HIGH.
I'm on disability and the smaller the drones the cheaper the parts and never go cheap on anything cause word of thumb you get what you pay for then realize going cheap you'll lose quads in the process. I couldn't afford the $2000 laptop to fly Sims but you'll need a computer of some kind to do the configuration cause we didn't have speedybee app in 2019 and when the app did come out of didn't always work like you need it to. But betaflight has a debug version on github and that app is very good but it's not Bluetooth.

Excellent video and I find your enthusiasm for FPV uplifting. But it is important to temper people's excitement with your warnings in this video. I started flying 8 years ago with line of sight 'toy' brushed motor drones. They were very sad and fragile (and cheap) drones - but it was a great way to get "stick" time and build experience up to my FPV and camera drone current fleet! I subbed to DIYFPV a while ago - I hope it can go live soon.

I spent 30 hours in the sim before flying. My first quad was a 5” and the hours in the sim helped sooo much. You are 💯 right in the respect thing. They are absolute weapons and need to be treated with care (not for the quad per se but for other people and surroundings)

I think you buy the thing you want .. I bought all the beginner gear then had to upgrade everything, That cost me more in the long run... I could see the Pocket being a solid keeper, a slow quad is just better to start with, you'll probably destroy it anyway, but for the radio and goggles just get what you want.. AG-01 gimbals are a luxury item though!!

I agree with what you’re saying but I also think the experience has to be first before having any true wants of any quality product. You can definitely want a certain something but I think it’s the vanity as opposed to functionality that catches the eyes. There’s nothing to gauge what’s good or bad you know? I switched from box goggles to diopters and now the question is do I have the lower/mid/high end diopters for the product year or did I buy something poopy? Idk lol but I love it

Ok…I’m a beginner. Great video and I appreciate your hard work and input. I started on Liftoff today with the Radiomaster Pocket 😅 very difficult! I wanted to use the Walksnail ecosystem but found a pair of New DJI V2 goggles for $200 and couldn’t pass it up, so now I’m stuck. I was looking at something like the Pavo 20 w/ DJI Air 03, or maybe a Mobula 8. I need to find out what options I have for a VTX besides the DJI 03, if any, for the V2’s and these or similar quads. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Starting out with a tinywhoop makes complete sense. However, as I am researching getting into FPV I wouldn't cheap out on the goggles and controller because if it turns out it's not for you it's way easier to sell, and if it is for you, you won't end up with redundant cheap gear that shouldn't have been made in the first place. E.g., those cheap small controllers that come with RTF (ready to fly) packages are useless for any other equipment. Anything produced anywhere should always have durability and compatibility as priority.
