I have ADHD and these habits are particularly difficult to break. I get addicted to things easily and my brain is constantly on a dopamine hunt. I use my phone for so many hours in the day, and it’s shocking that the numbers get there, because I work full time and I also have a toddler. I’m trying to be more mindful because I realise how damaging that can be. If I put my phone down, I’ll end up getting an unhealthy snack, or a cup of coffee, or a beer, or something else that is stimulating in the moment. I feel like when it comes to dopamine, I’m constantly consuming but never full. Due to current insurance issues, I am unmedicated so that makes a big difference too. I definitely could benefit from doing this but this would be an almighty challenge. But worth it, to be a healthier, happier person, and a better parent to my child.
Hi. I do neuroscience and I’m sure you know this but ADHD is associated with low dopamine production, hence the need to constantly seek more. ADHD medication blocks the reuptake of dopamine, so when dopamine is released it remains longer in the synapses. Sorry to hear you can’t get treatment. I would instead suggest taking a probiotic called L. Plantarum. Worth having a google, it has been shown to significantly increase dopamine production in animal models in multiple studies. Its also cheap and you can just get it Amazon. It really helped my focus and wakefulness. Good luck

the worst feeling is when you’re hanging out with people and you just feel yourself numbly mindlessly scrolling on your phone and feeling the present moment of being with others slipping by ...
I know exactly what you’re talking about. I’ve realized this in myself & whenever I realized it I would put my phone down & start a conversation & that usually causes the other person/people to put their phone away as well. A lot of times, at least with me, in a moment of silence or boredom we turn to our phones instead of finding a new activity to spark engagement. It’s also good to surround yourself with people who are actually interesting & on the same intellectual level & wavelength as you cause then there will always be something new to discuss & new ideas to discover.
Be around the people u want to spend time with. If you dont ppl will not wanna be around u anyway, its rude asf looking at your phone when spending time with ppl. I get angry when friends keep doing that round me, i just leave. If u arent interested in my company so be it. Turn off the phone! Dont matter if u are addicted u are still responsable for your actions
I’m 36 and pretty phone addicted, but my friends and I don’t look at our phones while we’re together. It’s like, dedicated time and imagining scrolling in silence in front of a friend seems incredibly rude. Checking a text is ok but not just hanging out looking at our phones. But sister is only 5 years younger and she does it. Age may not be the only factor.
I once was addicted to TV and news. I went on a two week camping trip where I was away from anything electronic and ignored any news going on. I came back with a distaste for TV and was much less interested in news. I realized the world went on without me keeping tabs on it. What I knew about what was going on didn't matter to how things went. It was a lightbulb over my head going on moment. I think it's what he's talking about here.
That's so true! I stopped watching Netflix and so many RUclips videos when I started travelling and enjoying the little things in life more. Much of the news is fake and talks very little about what's really going on in the world anyway. You can just look around you to see what's going on!
It makes you realize that you are small and unimportant in the grand scheme of things. But, it also seems to release and relieve you of responsibility you felt before. Life became better and less stressful.

Just fucking doing the task you need to do is the best thing and after about 1 minute into the task you will have the motivation to finish the task. The myth that motivation comes before the action needs to be stopped.
That is true. It's a 3 chain process. Action -> inspiration -> motivation. Sometimes it feels as doe we need to be motivated to do something but if we just do something than maybe it will trigger motivation.
1. Identify the behavior 2. Identify the reward you’re craving 3. Identify the trigger (Location, time, emotional state, other people, immediately preceding action) 4. Make a plan
Fascinating. I recognized recently that when I was not working, I was not always happier than when I was, despite spending every waking moment of my off days on things that I thought should have been pleasurable. I will try this out. Thanks.
You tube is a weird medium you don't have to be social at all. There's a way to control it don't do recommendations don't keep history stuff like that keeps new videos fresh geared towards your hobbies.
My addiction is RUclips, however is mostly channels liked this or podcast. I don’t feel bad listening to it, but I do spend lots of time trying to find stuff I want to listen or to watch. I think is because I’m a visual learner and I could listen to podcast only, but lots of interesting channels that I’m end up been curios is from visual channels just like this one.
It’s good to take a break. I also give myself the excuse that I’m watching videos to ‘learn’. Sure, I do learn. But there is a balance in life. I often wonder, am I truly choosing what to learn, or is that just an excuse to watch more videos. A good question to ask yourself too. I’ve chosen to take some longer online courses, that require hours of committment to a subject, instead of just 10 minutes.
@@sandbagg Thank you Sandbag. Usually it's self development videos & online courses. Will start to pay much attention to how much time I spent on that. Thank you again.

You can do it! I'm 10 months completely sober... I hardly drink caffeine anymore. Wish I had never touched drugs/alcohol in the first place, but as the old adage goes it's better late than never. Keep up the good work!!! Reach out if you ever want to talk or need support.
Good work! Most people refuse to admit that there's such a thing as "addiction to weed." There are plenty of ways to alter your consciousness or control anxiety without drugs. The key is to find the means to learn them, and surround yourself with people who aren't themselves using drugs to solve those problems.
I used to spend more than 9 hours on social apps. Then I realized I’d wasted more than a decade of my life on this. Now I started doin few hobbies that got nothing to do with the internet & improving my skills each day. This is my dopamine source nowadays. I still watch a lot of RUclips tho 😬 cos It help me to fulfill my constant need to learn new things daily.
I have discovered that some things that I get the dopamine rush from are easy to get away from with a traditional fast. Some are more deeply rooted, however, and I think this dopamine fast 2.0 will be good for those things that just keep derailing me again and again.
This is EXACTLY what I’ve been thinking about!! I urge surfing seemed to make sense in my head but impractical. I’m glad there’s research proving it now maybe I’ll try it. Alot of this ive already been applying into my life to beat addictions but this helps me understand. Never really defined it as 'dopamine fasting until I started hearing about it. Ive been actively taking down my addictions one by one over the years. First with coffee that one was pretty easy. Havnt touched coffee for about 9 years. The next one was cigarettes. Then Marijuana now I am actively trying to get myself into a reward system for alcohol. Used to be a borderline alcoholic and have gotten myself into a routine to only have some drinks on a Friday night. Next I want to punch out my addiction to sugar ive been slowly rewarding myself with fruit juices instead of pops with refined sugar. If anyone's reading this you can 100% beat your addictions using this method it just takes a little will power. Mind over matter
One of the best self-help videos on RUclips. Thanks. This is the kind of counter-cultural information people need to be more self-disciplined and have more self-control.
Thank you "After Skool". What you've explained has tied up everything about our consumption, for me. What's happening to us is our constant chase for the new or next "high". I've read and heard about this loop we put ourselves through chasing the next high, from other authors, speakers, and professionals. James Jani talks about in his video "The Toxic World of Self Help". Robert Kiyosaki talks about it in his book "Rich Dad Poor Dad. Robert calls the dopamine urge" fear and desire". The less forgiving term for desire is greed. This sounds like the fundamental or basic principle behind the control of society. We chase the next new gadget, and feel a rush when we eventually get it. We get a similar or the exact state of rush when we get the next paycheck, clothing, shoes, certificate of achievement, hairdo... These things act as a drug. The simple act of, for example shopping, ends up not being about getting the things you need to live. Shopping ends up becoming about getting that high when you swipe your card. This is why advertising is not about describing what the actual product does. Advertising became more about inflating the feeling of want for the new best mattress, TV, security surveillance, bread, whatever is being sold. Your video proves that as soon as you become content, you give advertisors very little to work. But as soon as you naturally choose to improve something in your life that might genuinely need improvement, you immediately become vulnerable and susceptible to falling for the traps that lie and wait.
God / spirit told me today to be sober today (just from cartridges / thc) I’ve been waking up high the past two weeks being blazed throughout the day and today was a pretty nice day

I've been fasting from FB and IG for the past 10 days and it feels great. I have definitely upped my RUclips time significantly, which isn't all bad, but I'm going to ditch it for the next 10 days as well to see what comes of the total time sucking fast. Thanks for the great summary and timely delivery.
@@alrightyru thanks! It's been great being off RUclips, too. I have allowed myself to come search for a specific topic and watch a video on it and then leave YT, which has been great. Realizing that the endless feeds on YT, FB and IG are really the mechanisms that keep us on them forever is a big key to a healthy interaction with them. I really don't miss FB as much as I expectef, which is really fascinating.
This somehow randomly came on my reccommended but this changed my life a lot. The day I started dopamine fasting I immediately felt how addicted I was to these short term pleasures. Feels like life is only up from here. Keep up the great content!!
2-minute summary: - dopamine fasting means applying stimulus control to reduce addictive behaviors; doesn't reduce dopamine; based on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) - solutions include removing the stimulus (e.g. disabling notifications), engaging in behaviors incompatible with the stimulus (e.g. swimming vs. phone use), or Exposure Response Prevention (ERP) - ERP: you can expose yourself to the stimulus (e.g. porn), but "urge surf" by not masturbating; be mindful, describe what the sensations feel like, then when you're done, set intentions for the rest of the day - dopamine fasting increases the number of dopamine receptors by reducing stimulus exposure frequency. "If you don't eat processed sugar for a month, a single blueberry can give you the same amount of pleasure as your favorite ice cream". How to dopamine fast: 1. Identify the impulsive behavior you want to reduce. Common ones: emotional eating, Internet & gaming, gambling & shopping, thrill & novelty seeking, porn, recreational drugs 2. Follow a dopamine fasting schedule. E.g. no phone use 1-4h one day a week, one day per quarter, and one week per year. Routine & Reward Replacement example: 1. Identify the behavior, e.g. going to the cafeteria to drink Coke every day 2. Identify the reward you're craving. Common ones: thirst, craving a sugar high, craving a break, needing social interaction. Experiment with replacing the reward, e.g. drink water instead, eat a fruit, take a walk, call a friend. See which one makes the initial craving subside. Log the results and look for patterns over a few weeks. 3. Identify the trigger for the craving. Common ones: times of day, location, seeing others perform the activity, an emotional state, immediately preceding action. 4. Make a plan. E.g. if it's the time of day, when "Coke time" comes around, walk to a juice bar.
I think they did this mainly because of bias but, also youtube isnt as bad as other social medias like Tik tok and instagram. On tik tok and instagram theres mostly short videos ranging from 10 to 60 seconds while on youtube there's mostly 5 minutes to 2 hour videos.
@@heesu7072 "it isn't bad as", nah, stop there. youtube is a social media too and people sit here and watch stuff for hours. i can watch videos on tiktok for hour or so and will be over it, on youtube i can easily watch some random shit for 2+ hours and not noticing it
I so badly wanted to quit this video 3 min in, the motivation to commit to productivity was too strong. I'm happy I stayed and can't wait to get started with life.
I used this video to help me into reducing my phone time and it worked!! went from 4-5h to 30-45 min a day. I analysed triggers, changed rewards, put a schedule. I also started meditating 5 minutes a day early in the morning to start the day off with some awareness. I installed a time tracking app that sets reminders (Smarter Time is what I used). And super life changing, I switched my phone screen to black and white! may sound stupid but very very effective
I love the way it says what 15 minutes to figure out and so solve.... Cravings..... Well cravings only last about 12 minutes so hold off on any craving for 15 mins and the other bits do not matter 💯
If You want to have money You have to stop identifying Yourself as poor. The words You use are what may be keeping You where You are. By calling Yourself poor You’re more than likely to stay that way unless You stop calling Yourself that. Look up Dr. Joe Dispenza.
@@fredycastaneda5955 I'll try. I'm gonna start studying next month after a couple years of keeping my head above water. I have a gf and we plan on living together somewhere but its gonna be tough. If you want to live on your own here as a young couple, you need to live in a horrible neighborhood and she deserves better then that
warfighter1988 these things that You’re saying that it has to be tough and that You have to live in a horrible neighborhood are just limiting beliefs. You can believe something way better then that My friend. If You believe that You deserve a really easy life and that You deserve to live in a beautiful neighborhood then that’s what will be true. But if you keep believing what You said about living in a horrible neighborhood then that also will be true UNLESS You decide to change it.
@@fredycastaneda5955I know that what you believe is untrue” most often represents a disagreement created by beliefs and pseudo-knowledge, not a statement of truth. How can you tell which is which? Here is how most people tell. If someone else is saying those words (“I know that what you believe is untrue”) to us, they obviously are suffering from delusionary pseudo-knowledge. On the other hand, if we are saying those words to someone else, it is again they who are obviously confusing pseudo-knowledge with knowledge. This is an easy rule to remember: If others agree with you, they possess real knowledge but if they disagree with you, they are afflicted with delusion and pseudo-knowledge. If you want to stay in the mainstream and play it safe in the center of the well-beaten path, applying the above rule is the standard technique for discriminating real knowledge from pseudo-knowledge. What rule could be more simple or satisfying to apply? Other people are always the idiots! The fact is, disagreement on Big Picture concepts is most often the result of a conflict of beliefs regardless of who is talking, pretending to listen, agreeing, or disagreeing. If you are to avoid jumping to conclusions in the absence of knowledge, you must maintain the state of open-minded skepticism - there is no other reasonable or logical alternative. Anything else is a trap. By now, you may be wondering if there is such a thing as good belief. I can best answer that question with another question. Is there such a thing as good ignorance - is there any situation where ignorance is better, more valuable, than knowledge? If there is, then wherever and whenever ignorance is best, that is where you will find a good belief. In the short-term and in the little picture you might find some advantages to ignorance in a few special cases. Ignorance is perhaps not so bad if the problem is of little significance and of minimal importance, or one you can do nothing about. If you are trying to trick, use, or manipulate others to your advantage, their ignorance is always very helpful. In the long run and in the Big Picture, if you are not trying to manipulate others and your ego is small, ignorance has little to no value. If the issues are significant, the stakes high, or the outcome important to you, then ignorance and belief will leave you vulnerable and looking like an ostrich with its head in the sand. In substantive matters of long-term significance, there is no good belief.

I definitely could benefit from doing this but this would be an almighty challenge. But worth it, to be a healthier, happier person, and a better parent to my child.
best of luck with this!!

Can't relate o:
Sad . I no
I once was addicted to TV and news.
Hi Brett- thanks for sharing. That’s incredible. Our behavior should be a much more pressing concern for us. I wrote a poem called “Dopamine” on my channel and made it into a video format. Could be of value to you or anyone on this thread. :) alright- take care guys!

I had this on my recommendation the first day of Ramadan.
I’ve been doing this for a few years now and it has increased my motivation! Definitely do what he says lol it’s worth it!! And you can do it if you put your mind to it!!
I’ve found the single best piece of advice I’ve ever got is “Action comes before motivation” it can be applied in literally any scenario. Even watching this video is making it more complex than it needs to be. Just fucking doing the task you need to do is the best thing and after about 1 minute into the task you will have the motivation to finish the task. The myth that motivation comes before the action needs to be stopped.
Agreed, and even better you start to build habits, the real master controller
Good advice~✌🏻
That is true. It's a 3 chain process. Action -> inspiration -> motivation. Sometimes it feels as doe we need to be motivated to do something but if we just do something than maybe it will trigger motivation.
Glad to see this Truth. 😇😇😇
Just do it.
1. Identify the behavior
2. Identify the reward you’re craving
3. Identify the trigger
(Location, time, emotional state, other people, immediately preceding action)
4. Make a plan

I think is because I’m a visual learner and I could listen to podcast only, but lots of interesting channels that I’m end up been curios is from visual channels just like this one.
So, does it mean you'll fast from RUclips?
Have same problem. I can get rid of all behaviors except watching RUclips.
For learning purposes...
It’s good to take a break. I also give myself the excuse that I’m watching videos to ‘learn’. Sure, I do learn. But there is a balance in life. I often wonder, am I truly choosing what to learn, or is that just an excuse to watch more videos. A good question to ask yourself too. Good work! Most people refuse to admit that there's such a thing as "addiction to weed." There are plenty of ways to alter your consciousness or control anxiety without drugs. The key is to find the means to learn them, and surround yourself with people who aren't themselves using drugs to solve those problems.

Literally one of the most achievable and realistic dopamine management that ive seen. Thank you for this!

Update ?
This somehow randomly came on my reccommended but this changed my life a lot. The day I started dopamine fasting I immediately felt how addicted I was to these short term pleasures. Feels like life is only up from here. Keep up the great content!!
This truly works. You feel amazing afterward. Perfectly content lacking nothing.
2-minute summary:
- dopamine fasting means applying stimulus control to reduce addictive behaviors; doesn't reduce dopamine; based on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
- solutions include removing the stimulus (e.g. disabling notifications), engaging in behaviors incompatible with the stimulus (e.g. swimming vs. phone use), or Exposure Response Prevention (ERP)
- ERP: you can expose yourself to the stimulus (e.g. porn), but "urge surf" by not masturbating; be mindful, describe what the sensations feel like, then when you're done, set intentions for the rest of the day
- dopamine fasting increases the number of dopamine receptors by reducing stimulus exposure frequency. "If you don't eat processed sugar for a month, a single blueberry can give you the same amount of pleasure as your favorite ice cream".
How to dopamine fast:
1. Identify the impulsive behavior you want to reduce. Common ones: emotional eating, Internet & gaming, gambling & shopping, thrill & novelty seeking, porn, recreational drugs
2. Follow a dopamine fasting schedule. E.g. no phone use 1-4h one day a week, one day per quarter, and one week per year.
Routine & Reward Replacement example:
1. Identify the behavior, e.g. going to the cafeteria to drink Coke every day
Thank you for the summary my friend. Very handy and just what I was looking for♥️
