I like the "Buy, wait for sale, rent, or never touch" rating system. The score just pretty much covers if you're getting your moneys worth or not, rather than a specific number.
I can see why some would find the chopped-up garble-speak to be annoying. It was supposed to mirror the speech system of Banjo-Kazooie (I can still hear Banjo's voice), but for some reason Yooka-Laylee's voices are just scratchier. It sounds like the characters are in pain when they speak. In Banjo-Kazooie they sounded "natural" in a way (minus Grunty).
Playing through the game right now you can just check the short speech box in audio options and makes the dialogues far more bearable. Game is great imo only the camera can get annoying at times.
So ever since GameTrailes went down, I had been looking for a new place to get my video game reviews. Nobody really seemed to cut it. I wanted what GT had, consistency, honesty, in depth, and as little bias as possible. I was shown this channel by a friend and you, sir, provide exactly what I have been looking for. I love your reviews and how you actually rate games. You spend a proper amount of time on sound and looks as well as game play and story to bring a full knowledge package to the viewer. I thank thee. Keep up the awesomeness!!
rabidkangar00 Don't forget AngryJoeShow, he reviews almost every movie that comes out and has funny and detailed reviews for two games a month. Now you have 3 :)
I usually watch like 10 reviews before purchasing a game and yours is always the most spot on. You sir have saved me a ton of money and completely earned my trust. Thanks and keep up the great work.
Good review (as usual), love how you cover both good and bad in all reviews and then instead of an arbitrary scoring system, you straight up tell the consumer whether or not the game is worth your money now, or ever worth it.
"Nuts & Bolts was criminally undercelebrated" THANK YOU! You've earned yourself a sub. We would probably have more Banjo Kazooie games if most people didn't cry about the last one and just bought it and played it instead.
It is good to see more quality reviews on RUclips, you give a good quality analysis with explanation for your points. I Really like your system of "Buy, Wait for Sale, Rent, Never Touch?" It is infinitely better than a numerical scale. It also feels like you have been improving in your analysis (which is completely subjective as I haven't went back to watch to many old videos).
First time wandering into your channel, I love what I just saw. Integrity statement, methodical approach and an excellent grading scale are the reasons why I'm going to come back here the next time I'm on the fence about buying a game. Keep up the good work!
Man i have to say, your use of language just amazes me everytime i watch a video of yours. Coupled with your voice it makes reviews worth watching, even if i never intend to buy the game in the first place. Keep it up!
I didn't either. I'm still planning on checking out the game as it seems like a nostalgia trip worth taking, but the game show bits look like they are going to get tedious.
Nuts & Bolts - criminally under-celebrated. YES!! That's one of my favorite games ever. It's too bad that it got a lot of crap and didn't sell all that well. I never thought a time-trial based game would win my heart but this one did. I played it recently on XO and although it's got some bad framerate issues on the platform, it's still a beautiful game that plays well.
I don't know if its as bad as Snake Pass, but I noticed that both Snake Pass and Yookay Laylee have been criticized for camera and having small worlds.
Hopefully it can be patched along with the lag then I think most people will be fairly happy with it and it would likely increase the likeability of the game
It's incredibly difficult to make a well functioning third person camera. There's a hundred different corner cases and exceptions and you have to handle all of them correctly. Usually the level designer has to design hints for the camera and build levels around what suits the camera. It has to be playtested to death and tweaked to make sure the camera behaves and you still have to allow the player to take manual control over the camera with the other analog stick. Platformers were never the same when the transitioned to 3D.
As always another great thorough review. I feel like your reviews are the gold standard. Thanks once again :) I bought this before watching your review because I'm a huge fan of the Banjo Kazooie franchise but your review made me feel better about my off the cuff purchase.
This is a fantastic review! Very all around and fair sounding, plus I like how you don't bullshit around at the start or end to make it unnecessarily longer, and turn rating system is ingenious. Definitely subscribing to see more content!
Gameorama91 I remember hearing that Switch users "wouldn't have to wait long" and that the release was "close" on a Nintendo Direct , but that's pretty vague.
the switch version is April 11, only digital though. There is no physical cartridge due to how much more production would have cost from the price on cartridge.
I love how this review perfectly nails my prediction for this game. If you go back and watch the launch trailer you can actually SEE the camera failing to convey information. I remember thinking, "It really a 90s platformer! warts and all!"
You know, your review really hit that itch for me. It explained why some people love this game, and why some people hate it. I'm definitely going to look for more from you. On a side note, now I'm actually wondering how much Ukelale use is in the game. I remember Banjos and Kazoos used pretty prominently when you would collect a jiggy.
I know im a nobody, but i really enjoy this series of reviews. I do follow your advice after seeing gameplay and hearing your honest thoughts, this does look like a wait for sale title :)
First time viewer, found you in my recommended videos. Love how calm and detailed you are, definitely earned a subscriber! Keep up the great work, can't wait to see more content.
Watched a few of your videos and just finally subscribed, you really connect with the people watching it some how. I will say something about this game that puts me off a little. When I look at some of the foliage and floor textures grass, dirt etc, it reminds me of the art style of no man's sky, which I'm not sure if I like. Think I'll wait for a sale for this game. I was gonna get it to play with the Mrs, but I just found out there in no real co-op campaign, only multiplayer games.
I know people talk about how you're a great reviewer etc but you seem like a genuinely great guy man not just reviewer, replying to comments on every video, amazing work ethic the way you pump out top quality content and most of all the honesty with the people who support you and keep your channel going, good job man you deserve everything good the future holds for you. What a great channel to be subscribed too! Peace!
Very sad to see YL isn't living up to the potential it had. Was planning to pick it up for my son's Switch, but will give it a wait until the bugs are cleaned up. Thanks again!
Sad that IGN, GameSpot and others, combined, don't amount to the time ACG's reviews not only last, but the content and thought that goes into the reviews, themselves. Thanks for doing what you do.
Fair review. I feel that this game has more specific of a target audience than a lot of other games out/coming this gen which, beside the technical problems mentioned by most, could be landing it lower scores through out other media outlets. The camera issues are thankfully being addressed before launch so maybe we wont have to worry so much about that being that it seems to be one of the biggest gripes out there so far. Thank you for this. Well done :)
I adored DK64 and Banjo Tooie , and this just reminds me of them so much. Never was expecting greatness here, but looks like enough good stuff for me to warrant a purchase. I appreciate your review.
I was really looking forward to this game but watching your video I can see that the delay on the camera reset being too quick would be super annoying especially on moving platforms. Thanks for the review.
Dude I love the grubby sound effects for the voices. That was my favorite part of Banjo Kazooie. I still do Grunty's voice when I'm alone. Hell, I'll probably be doing it after this review is over.
Wow, I really liked that you held back your opinions till the last segment. The rest of the time you just provided unbiased information about the game, how it plays, etc. So personally, I will buy it, I'll probably wait for a sale, but the parts you had issue with (like voice acting) don't matter to me as much.
Please stay the way you are Karak, I go on Gamespot's review which gave it a 6/10 and there is just a flame war between the people who say this review is untrustworthy and the one's that agree with it. While here there is no stupid argument or debate. So thanks for making and having a good community.
I value the extensive detail in your reviews. I recall similar camera complaints with Epic Mickey which I thought was fine personally, so I guess tolerance varies.
Pre-ordered. Loved Banjo-Kazooie as a kid, so this game is a second coming imo. Hopefully the complaints I have are outshined by the rest of the game. I don't really like the character designs of Yooka and Laylee, the music doesn't seem as in your face while still being ambient like Banjo-Kazooie, I hate that PS4 and Xbox One are capped at 30fps, and I've heard there are many frame drops. I have high hopes but I've remained fairly spoiler free in terms of what the game offers as a whole.
Thanks for this. My sister loves plat former games gives me something to tell her to go look up and see if she will like. Again top notch depth, insight and reasons I really hope the you tube issues do not affect your channel or growth.
maybe but if they can't get it right in the entire development phase of the game. There is very little hope they will magically get the #2 tier element of the game right.
So I had downloaded the N64 emulator, and played banjo-kazooie using my keyboard. And everyone always runs with kazooie, it's just a better way to get around, but I would set it to my spacebar and it was annoying holding that, while walking and jumping. Is there anything similar to that on this game? Also, my computer obviously doesnt have a joystick, and joysticks make movement easier, would it be better to just get it on my PS4?
12:02 I'm used to people always asking viewers to like, comment, and subscribe... but never to actually act based on their honest feelings! Kudos for that!
When I was wondering should buy, wait for sale, or never get near it. And that is because of you, you now have a recurring *subscriber* for your type review, types that explain what those scores mean.
All of this sounds promising. No car building? No map? No clothes? I'm interested. People complained about backtracking in Donkey Kong 64 and for me that added fun to the experience. It feels like solving crosswords and I love that.
This is a great review, and it's an honest one too. I can deal with horrible cameras in platformers like Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 for an example. I think they wanted to make it felt like Banjo Kazooie from the N64 era (I was a Sony kid, Spyro, Crash, and Ape Escape) it might be an issue but I can ignore it if the game doesn't screw me over. The voices I don't think are bad, they went with the Banjo Kazooie route and that's where it's gonna be. And besides I don't expect Grade A voice acting in a game like this. I'm still getting the game even though the drama and the hate Playtonics is getting because of Jontron. Good job.
Good, fair review as always. I suspect my experience with the game may be different if only because I absolutely adore Banjo Kazooie and will probably take things differently (like the voices). That said the technical issues are good to know about and hopefully they try to address some of this stuff in patches. I may wait on this one a little bit. Thanks for the good review!
I had my reservations regarding this game and it seems like some of my fears where not unfounded. So I'll guess I'll wait for a sale and I'm crossing my fingers that A Hat in Time will deliver instead. That's for yet another great review.
Spot on review 👍🏻 I love platform and I really enjoyed this game but that camera oh my. It did have a couple of bugs on the PS4 slowdowns as well as trophy not popping
I'm glad someone's Kickstarter nostalgia project actually turned into what it's supposed to be. This looks like a reskinned Banjo made for modern systems, which I can't imagine is too far off from what everyone wanted. Definitely getting this when it's around 20 bucks
What would you say are some 3D Platformers with good cameral work, seeing as how that's arguably one of the main sticking points for 3D gameplay as a whole?
I have two questions for you My good Sir. Ratchet and klank or Ori and the Blind Forest? Tuesday Project Scorpio will be tested by Digital foundry, do you think it is a good idea for MS to let someone else talk about their system?
Watching the Yooka Rap, I realized the camera work and animations were lacking. That seems to be a consistent complaint, and if that's the only issue, it'll surely still be fun. The camera stiffness reminds me of Grabbed by the Ghoulies, from the same core devs. That was a pain at first, then it became second nature.
I've been noticing from everyone elses preview videos of the game that the camera looked really janky but since no one dared comment about it pre-release I wasn't sure if it was a real issue. This confirms it and I'm going to wait for a sale and hopefully hear about a patch soon. Besides I got at least 300 hours I'm about to sink into persona 5
I'm still very excited for this game. All I really expected this game to do was scratch that 90's 3D platforming itch that I've been yearning for lately. A game that I don't have to take very seriously and just enjoy the nostalgia. It's a bit of a shame that the camera is bad because when I played the Toybox demo I noticed that the camera would get stuck quite a bit and I figured that they would iron it out. It's not a deal breaker for me though because as a whole the game looks great.
Playtonic's pretty fortunate all things considered. The issues they have with the game can be patched fairly easily, and the feedback for the game's issues has been very constructive and well worded-- and this here's a shining example of good criticism!
Glad you said that about the text. I am sure they poke fun about annoying NPC unskippable dialogue in Yooka Laylee and then proceed to use it throughout. The phase transitions of the final boss had me shouting at my TV because even though I had just failed and went back to phase one I would still have to listen to all dialogue and watch the animations from every phase. Also some of the challenges, especially the arcade games were not fun at all. Banjo is a far superior game in every way.
Well I'm crushed by all these reviews, been looking forward to this for friggin ages Is it as good as the old banjo games? Or is it just getting bashed by today's standards
I guess I'll have to wait and see when it comes out, but the dialog style doesn't bug me that much, I liked it a lot in Banjo Kazooie and unless its substantially worse here I don't think it'll bother me, and it's part of the nostalgia of the game. The camera didn't look THAT bad to me, but its hard to judge that without actually playing it since I dont know what you were trying to do with it and how much it wasn't co-operating. Good review as always, Karak. Since I backed this game I'll be getting it in a few days anyway, so hopefully I'll enjoy it to get my ~$15 investment's worth :P
Cool review. Though I'm constantly reminded how much we pay for games in comparison to America. The buy price of this title is like 60-80 bucks where I live. So even if it was amazing I'm going wait until I can buy it preowned. Stupid lack of competition.
Best review I've seen so far on this game. So far every single I've seen has either praised it, but overlooked its flaws or was a "them" problem. This was one was totally balanced and I think that the Wait for Sale is definitely the right rating in this case.
If the camera issues get fixed or at least improved in a day one patch as is being rumoured, would that upgrade the game from a "wait for a sale" to a "buy" in your mind?
Great review. I'm still going to buy it because it's only $32 with GCU and I love these old school platformers. I think I can look place the annoying issues.
I like the "Buy, wait for sale, rent, or never touch" rating system. The score just pretty much covers if you're getting your moneys worth or not, rather than a specific number.
thanks man
Did anyone else think their computer crashed at 5:11?
lol
sort of. I thought the video crashed.
PROTOTYPE XIC03 It was Also Laging while!
Nope I have two braincells to rub together, I suggest the purchase of a second, it will help you tremendously in life.
You have two braincells or two brain cells? One is an artist and the other is what I think you meant. Nice "braincells" at work. :D
In Banjo-Kazooie they sounded "natural" in a way (minus Grunty).
ya its just odd

rabidkangar00 The gt crew lives! "Easy allies"! Brandon Jones still voices the reviews. Go check em out
Hey, thanks for the info, guys! I'll check them out for sure! Damn, from no review channels to two, what is life? lol
rabidkangar00
Don't forget AngryJoeShow, he reviews almost every movie that comes out and has funny and detailed reviews for two games a month. Now you have 3 :)
Angry Joe is a bad game critic
I usually watch like 10 reviews before purchasing a game and yours is always the most spot on. You sir have saved me a ton of money and completely earned my trust. Thanks and keep up the great work.
thanks muffin
That's what I call a review. Simple, straight to the point and not a 30-minute video. Good job.
Good review (as usual), love how you cover both good and bad in all reviews and then instead of an arbitrary scoring system, you straight up tell the consumer whether or not the game is worth your money now, or ever worth it.
thanks
I forgot this was coming out soon great vid and thanks for reminding me and of course your hilarious as always
thanks Ryan
ACG no problem you deserve it
ACG hey ACG, big fan of your reviews. I am still waiting for your review of "breath of the wild" before i go and buy it.
ShiningT1g3R oh didnt know that
Peebo Saxon breath of the wild is one game that doesn't need a review just buy it and love it
This review was gold! Funny, comprehensive, honest; this is some good stuff.
thanks
Keep up the good work!
my thanks
Im a new subscriber. It's hard to find a reviewer so concise and fast and to the fucking point. You delivered. I love you
my thanks simon
Thanks for the review Karak, very informative and good fun to watch as always!
you bet
wait, is it not carot? my entire life is a lie :'(
So this game basically modernizes the past while simultaneously remaining stuck in the past. Makes sense...
ya
Man i have to say, your use of language just amazes me everytime i watch a video of yours. Coupled with your voice it makes reviews worth watching, even if i never intend to buy the game in the first place. Keep it up!
thanks Hup
The Never Ending Story, man I loved that film when I was a kid ☺
Great review as always fella
2 reviews up in one day, ahead or alongside major review companies with 100% more information and quality done by just one man, damn
well they are just posted on the same day. it doesn't mean I had to play them at the same time
I had no idea those gameshow bits were that much of the game, seems really irritating.
a couple times. Not a lot but it was a good example of the issue with presentations
seems like a hark back to the old gruntilda board game from Banjo-Kazooie
+Dan
And the "No Shit" Award goes to...
and the "had to explain to someone who isn't a Banjo purist and doesn't know about the board game" award goes to me too then?
I didn't either. I'm still planning on checking out the game as it seems like a nostalgia trip worth taking, but the game show bits look like they are going to get tedious.
Respect for no sponsored reviews 👏👏👏
thanks
Nuts & Bolts - criminally under-celebrated.
YES!!

Fuck. Really sad the camera is wonky, that is almost a deal breaker entirely based on that.

ACG No, thank you! for making very informative, fair andentertaining reviews that you guys always do. Don't ever change ACG!! 😊
Couldn't agree more
He really IS. 💯👌
Two of these videos in one day? Hats off. Killing it.
luckily they don't have to be played at the same time lol

dude your reviews are awesome keep up the good work

So happy to see you review this! Informative and fun review as always, Karak!
thanks Grande
Why does everyone hate the voices in yooka but don't hate the voices in banjo even though they're the same?
Good honest review as usual. Maybe if only that duck talked as fast as you and the camera was as precise as your choice of words. Lol. :)
lol true
This is a fantastic review! Very all around and fair sounding, plus I like how you don't bullshit around at the start or end to make it unnecessarily longer, and turn rating system is ingenious.
Definitely subscribing to see more content!
I cant find a date for the Switch. I assume later like this summer? Just wondering

I was gonna get it to play with the Mrs, but I just found out there in no real co-op campaign, only multiplayer games.
my thanks man
This game came out of nowhere and it looks like a gem. Thanks for the review, I'll definitely check it out once I'm done with Persona 5.
I know people talk about how you're a great reviewer etc but you seem like a genuinely great guy man not just reviewer, replying to comments on every video, amazing work ethic the way you pump out top quality content and most of all the honesty with the people who support you and keep your channel going, good job man you deserve everything good the future holds for you. shitty camera is part of the N64 nostalgia for me

Another awesome vid karak!! Thanks man watched your videos for years. What review is next?
Fantastic review, your depth of language and balanced opinions are appreciated. Light-years ahead of places like Gamespot. Liked and shared!
appreciate that
"...and as always..." Best reviewer on the tube dude! Honestly you put all the others to shame. Thank you so much for all your hard work!
ACG will you review shiness the lightning kingdom this month?
maybe
ACG cool 👍
Do you know if it's possible for the camera issue to be patched? Still buying the game on release since I'm a sucker for platformers.
maybe but if they can't get it right in the entire development phase of the game. There is very little hope they will magically get the #2 tier element of the game right.
ACG Oh I see. By the way, just subscribed to you man. You gave a very thorough review better than many other reviewers thanks!
I know a buddy of mine who is hype for this and persona 5 and i think this will help him decide which one to pick. Thank you ACG

Good job.
Snake Pass review?
no
ACG awww come on
Jaybib you played it then? How about a review?
KurtisSpade GameHunter
It sucked
snake pass is a great game with wonderful visuals (what YL couldn't do), it deserves some attention
Hey "K" nice review, loved the Snake with the Shorts! xD hahaha
lol one of the cool characters for sure
but that that voice is anoying, sounds like the "Grown ups" from Snoopy xD
Great Review ACG! Subbed again. YT keeps unsubbing to channel still, lol.
sorry:(
I had my reservations regarding this game and it seems like some of my fears where not unfounded. So I'll guess I'll wait for a sale and I'm crossing my fingers that A Hat in Time will deliver instead. That's for yet another great review.
very detailed and overall great review. thanks!
you bet
Spot on review 👍🏻 I love platform and I really enjoyed this game but that camera oh my. It did have a couple of bugs on the PS4 slowdowns as well as trophy not popping
ya sad
I'm glad someone's Kickstarter nostalgia project actually turned into what it's supposed to be. This looks like a reskinned Banjo made for modern systems, which I can't imagine is too far off from what everyone wanted. Definitely getting this when it's around 20 bucks
Awesome review Karak. Did I miss your review for persona 5?
ya you must have
What would you say are some 3D Platformers with good cameral work, seeing as how that's arguably one of the main sticking points for 3D gameplay as a whole?
"criminally under celebrated Banjo Kazooie: Nuts n Bolts" ..... whew... you're not one of THOSE PEOPLE. So relieved.
That was a pain at first, then it became second nature.
ya it kills me
I've been noticing from everyone elses preview videos of the game that the camera looked really janky but since no one dared comment about it pre-release I wasn't sure if it was a real issue. This confirms it and I'm going to wait for a sale and hopefully hear about a patch soon. Besides I got at least 300 hours I'm about to sink into persona 5
You make the best video reviews on the interwebz, sir. Great review!
thanks
Well I'm crushed by all these reviews, been looking forward to this for friggin ages
Is it as good as the old banjo games? Or is it just getting bashed by today's standards
I guess I'll have to wait and see when it comes out, but the dialog style doesn't bug me that much, I liked it a lot in Banjo Kazooie and unless its substantially worse here I don't think it'll bother me, and it's part of the nostalgia of the game. The camera didn't look THAT bad to me, but its hard to judge that without actually playing it since I dont know what you were trying to do with it and how much it wasn't co-operating. Good review as always, Karak. Since I backed this game I'll be getting it in a few days anyway, so hopefully I'll enjoy it to get my ~$15 investment's worth :P
thank you sir
Cool review. Though I'm constantly reminded how much we pay for games in comparison to America. The buy price of this title is like 60-80 bucks where I live. So even if it was amazing I'm going wait until I can buy it preowned. Stupid lack of competition.
true
Best review I've seen so far on this game. So far every single I've seen has either praised it, but overlooked its flaws or was a "them" problem. This was one was totally balanced and I think that the Wait for Sale is definitely the right rating in this case.
you and angry Joe do the best reviews!
I dont wanna sound generic but this review as always is great dude. You hit all the points and it's entertaining to watch and listen.
Really enjoyed the review, been looking forward to this since I backed the game. Keep up the good work!
I picked up this game for only £28 on release day, I absolutley loved it. :) I hope they make a sequel like Banjo Tooie...
If the camera issues get fixed or at least improved in a day one patch as is being rumoured, would that upgrade the game from a "wait for a sale" to a "buy" in your mind?

>Icymetric Palace
the games not even out yet but i love it already
Ive been waiting years for this game. And so far its got pretty good reviews. If its half of what Banjo Kazooie was its gonna be a great game.
its about half.
Ill take it! haha
reminds me that i need to pick up the rare replay for xbone. thanks, Karak
Will you be reviewing Bulletstorm full clip ???
thank you for the review! awesome and informative as always
you bet
Great review. I'm still going to buy it because it's only $32 with GCU and I love these old school platformers. I think I can look place the annoying issues.
enjoy twigg
Will you be reviewing A Hat in Time ACG? It's shaping up to be better than Yooka Laylee, and its price point is $20, not $40 (too much imo)
