I never played the DK country games growing up, but it really scratched the banjo kazooie itch I've had for a while. it's become one of those games I wish it was possible to play for the first time again because of how fun unlocking the overworld was for me
I also consider the dkc series to be top tier unrivaled 16-bit platforming. I've beaten 1 and 2 a dozen times each and still genuinely enjoy the art, music, and tight, dynamic platforming.
You have made up my mind Jirard. I've been on the boarder about this game. I played and enjoyed the first yooka-laylee game but wasn't sure I wanted to get this one. Thanks to you I'm gonna give it a try ^^ thank you
Same. I also regret skipping Yooka-Laylee when it first came out! It was one of the Xbox Gold games this month fortunately and I'm super happy I got to finally play it. Loved it and can't believe such a great game got so much backlash. People are weird. I played Impossible Lair first though and yeah, it's the even better game. A masterpiece, only outclassed in the genre by Tropical Freeze (which I personally think is the greatest 2D platformer of all time).
Congratulations on the nomination! I hope you win the award! I gotta be honest, this video made me want to go out and buy this game, and I never grew up on either Banjo or DKC.
Hey Jirard, I just wanna say thanks to you and the rest of the TOVG crew for doing what you do. Even with something crazy like what you did in this game, you still came through. Also, Super Maker Bros 2 on Beard Bros is HYPE.
I feel like the cumbersome nature of the "Impossible Lair" level could have been fixed by introducing a choice system upon entering the level after the initial attempt. "Would you like to storm the Impossible Lair with the Beetallion? -YES! Let's go! (x out of 48 assembled) -I'll do it myself! -Not yet." Selecting "I'll do it myself!" would bring up some sort of prompt like; "Are you sure? It'd be much easier to get through it with the Beetallion at your back. -Yes! I can do it! -I'm not sure..." From there, it would restart normally if you die on the level.
I'm super glad this game is getting good praises! I think I'll go play it for myself now! I previously was prepared to just never play it. What a pleasant surprise!

I don't get why people claim this game is nostalgic, it resembles much more the modern DKC rather than the old DKC. I'm good with that, I prefer modern DKC, however I wouldn't describe this game as "nostalgic", is just a great platformer.
@@alminhelex hmmm I can see that. I think that gameplay and...."feeling" is more reminiscent of the newer ones. I might be wrong, but it seems to me that people get stuck on the "old rare employees" and create their opinion from there.
I'm really glad that they didn't abandon the franchise, Yokaa & Laylee's design honestly puts a smile on my face. When the first game was received so poorly, I was almost sure that it's never going to get a sequel.

How cool the streamy nom! Well deserved. Sad the algorithm is messing up your views, but keep at it. I found you this year and I haven't missed an episode since. You're making good stuff.
Hey Girard, the reason Marketing the same thing in new colours works is not because of schemes or lack of thought, but because of the human condition called "unwillingness to change" Look at the Nes and SNes. The controls were the same layout, just more buttons. Meanwhile, the N64 saw many players switching to PlayStation simply because of the controller was so out there. Meanwhile, PlayStation has had the same amount of controls, I believe more, last time I cross mapped it) but layed out more like the Snes, avoiding the player to learn a new design. Likewise, most games that do good are a hit because people like it and, at this point, the gameplay builds off of the older games. This all plays with our psychological want to remain in our comfort zone, and finding new things uncomfortable and odd. That peer pressure is a really good way to help people transition through the awkward to what they consider the new normal. But with in-home comsols being so provate and mmos being so mass produced, one cannot venture too far anymore.
Now this is just a suggestion, I love your show, but I've seen you end games with a "Finish It" rating despite how the game is and usually from a single sour spot. My suggestion is to maybe make it something like "Complete It minus the golden tonic". But then again, people watching the video all the way through would probably see your love and appreciation of the game and know well enough to do just that. And also, congratulations on the Nomination!
Glad to see that Yooka-Laylee and The Impossible Lair is a brilliant game. I was planning on picking it up and this episode of The Completionist has only reaffirmed this decision to buy it and support Playtonic. Hopefully Jirard decides to complete something a little easier like Blasphemous, which is a fun Metroidvaniaknight game, I kickstarted and had so much fun playing I bought an additional copy to complete again. Or maybe he could do Dead Cells or Indivisible? Maybe Transistor?
Man congrats and I definitely will be voting for ya. Been watching your videos for years and got me into doing everything (within reason) in video games.
I feel like one of a rare kind that actually loved Yooka-Laylee, though disclaimer: I have never properly played and thus have no nostalgia for Banjo-Kazooie. (Was still excited for their Smash reveal though, as a fan of mascot-type characters.) What I hated about 100%-ing the game was that there was nothing more left to do. So yeah, I was without a doubt excited for Impossible Lair when it was announced. I love the balance between the challenging 2D platforming and the relaxing exploration of the 3D world map. I love this game very much, with the exception of the Impossible Lair itself. I get the concept, but I died at the third match against Capital B and found out I was only at 50%. That stage is just too long for my taste and I checked out after getting almost everything else in the game.
I have no issue with the difficulty. It's the length of it and how progress of up to a half an hour can be lost when you screw up. For me, that's not very inviting and if I'm not invited, I'm not joining the party.
Hey Jirard, did you know that Wise only did like 6 tracks, Grant did the overworld variations BUT 75% of the soundtrack was made by the new sound guys at Playtonic? Yup, he really nailed the style of Wise's music, which is why people end up giving him most of the credit :p
Matt Griffin and Dan Murdoch both!! :D

RaineTCG ok?
They missed an opportunity to call the game “Twoka Laylee”
true
I think they're saving that for another 3D open-world game.
This is just a spin-off "Twooka Laylee" is their next game.
the overworld in this game was what really sold me on the game.

Well done getting that Golden Tonic! 😃
I've been watching Big Jon speed run this game (24 Bees category) and that Impossible Lair is crazy long.
You have made up my mind Jirard. I've been on the boarder about this game. I played and enjoyed the first yooka-laylee game but wasn't sure I wanted to get this one. Thanks to you I'm gonna give it a try ^^ thank you
I picked up the game yesterday after watching this episode, and I really enjoy it! I wish I hadn't passed up on Yooka-Laylee when it first came out.
I love how YookaLaylee is kind of becoming like a Rare Redux. I'm really curious if they'll go ahead with a third game and tackle another genre.
Hey Jirard, I just wanna say thanks to you and the rest of the TOVG crew for doing what you do. Even with something crazy like what you did in this game, you still came through. Also, Super Maker Bros 2 on Beard Bros is HYPE.
I'm really glad that after Yooka Laylee's pretty meh reception Playtonic managed to turn it around so well with Impossible Lair
It ain't turned yet, people don't know about this game, it needs more word of mouth to be a success.
hands down, this is one of the best games i had ever played
I feel like the cumbersome nature of the "Impossible Lair" level could have been fixed by introducing a choice system upon entering the level after the initial attempt.
"Would you like to storm the Impossible Lair with the Beetallion?
-YES! Let's go! (x out of 48 assembled)
-I'll do it myself!
-Not yet."
Selecting "I'll do it myself!" would bring up some sort of prompt like;
"Are you sure? It'd be much easier to get through it with the Beetallion at your back.
-Yes! I can do it!
-I'm not sure..."
From there, it would restart normally if you die on the level.
I'm super glad this game is getting good praises! I think I'll go play it for myself now! I previously was prepared to just never play it. What a pleasant surprise!
I’ve been playing this game and like it a lot. I’m also looking forward to the day you tackle Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze.
I’m so glad I found this video late, I just picked up a copy of this on PS4 and it is exactly what I needed right now. I picked up a copy for my little sister on her switch so she can play it after her upcoming surgery, it’s just such a happy game
Before playing the impossible layer: happy go-lucky Jirard
After playing the impossible layer: PUNISHED JIRARD
He still doesn't look as stressed as her did with that second Fnaf game though. That looked ROUGH.
You will feel that way once you play through it.
This review is a proper tribute to an underrated masterpiece. Thank you!

wow man congrats on the nomination! it's because of your content brother; you're always on point. I think I speak for all of us when I say, thank you for all the entertainment.

This game is so packed with bee puns that they start to emanate into other languages by accident.
I don't get why people claim this game is nostalgic, it resembles much more the modern DKC rather than the old DKC. I'm good with that, I prefer modern DKC, however I wouldn't describe this game as "nostalgic", is just a great platformer.
Because ppl are fanboys. .. and they haven't actually played dkc in decades and are miss-remembering.
With all the overworld stuff, it honestly makes me think a lot of DKC3.
@@AimingAtYou personally I disagree. Just listening to the soundtrack have me dkc 2 vibes with the metalic beats.
@@alminhelex hmmm I can see that. I think that gameplay and...."feeling" is more reminiscent of the newer ones. I might be wrong, but it seems to me that people get stuck on the "old rare employees" and create their opinion from there.
I agree. It's good, but nothing that new if you played DKCTF
Sounds like a fun game. I will pick this up.
Hats off to you sir for the 60+ hours of work for that Golden Tonic! AMAZING!
I feel like, if Jirard still had the combination Completionist ratings, that this would be a "Fini-plete It" for sure.
I'm really glad that they didn't abandon the franchise, Yokaa & Laylee's design honestly puts a smile on my face. When the first game was received so poorly, I was almost sure that it's never going to get a sequel.
I actually bought this earlier when I was getting something else. It was an impulse purchase. Glad I got it now. It looks amazing.
Big ear Laylee needs to be the base design. Its so much cuter and makes them feel more impactful.
You did the impossible and fought the power. Well done.
This game is enjoyable. The music from the first level is amazing
Ok but yooka with a key in his mouth is just like the cutest thing ever
Also the look of this game give me a huge viva piñata feel
Wow, what an accomplishment Jirard! 60 hours on the Impossible Lair level, if I ever meet you, I'm shaking your hand. What a legend.
Thankfully they didn't give up. YL deserves to be a legendary franchise.
I just wish that them as characters had better designs, but it's a good sign that it's my one of my few big gripes with this game.
@@mamasboy7569 Trouser snake is great, but some of the others could use some work. That queen Bee is no Jamjar I'll tell ya that right now.
So we've gotten a Banjo Style game and now a DKC style game. Next is obviously a Perfect Dark style FPS. Or maybe another Banjo style which would be cool
Yooka Laylee: *has the word "Impossible" in it*

Also The Completionist: No joke, this game was impossible to complete!

Like it's crazy to think that the first time I'm hearing about this game is the completionist completing it
Jirard retains his title as the hardest working man on RUclips.
Excellent video.
I have an impossible game for Jirard. Star Ocean: Till The End of Time. There is an in-game achievement for beating the final boss with a team of level 1's. Which is impossible.
You just need to use synthesis a LOT. Final boss is easy compared to how many of the games bonus bosses. Like lenneth. (Gets PSTD at the thought of Nibelung Valesti)
Have fun trying to get the Platinum trophy for that game.
This, Jirard, is why I watch the completionist every week, to see you overcome the most impossible of challenges
I didn't know they made a sequel I guess I'm going to have to check it out.

Is it just me, or does it sound like Jirard's saying "layer" just about every time he says "lair"?
How cool the streamy nom! Well deserved. Sad the algorithm is messing up your views, but keep at it. I found you this year and I haven't missed an episode since. You're making good stuff.

You’ve got my vote for the Streamy!
How did you vote?
Hey Girard, the reason Marketing the same thing in new colours works is not because of schemes or lack of thought, but because of the human condition called "unwillingness to change"
Look at the Nes and SNes.
The only thing that's impossible is a bad video from Jirard
Indeed
Agreed my guy
Not trying to say Jirard is at all bad, but I disliked his Detroit video.

I love accidental drinking establishments so I' choose to B-lieve the opposite.
And also, congratulations on the Nomination!
...Wait... Is that Arin drawn as Garfield on your shirt?
Naw it probably is himself or maybe Alex
Congrats on the nomination Jirard! I hope you and the rest of The Completionist team win! :')
Hey Jirard, just curious, do you know when the frog in a car plushie is coming back for sale?
Thought this was a battle square episode at first skimming the title. Glad to see Playtonic decided to carry on after the 1st game backlash
"Cross every "i" and dot every "T"

What did he do.... I am confused
To sorta give what the others are wondering, I *think* that it's to refer to how he said it backwards, but if I'm wrong please correct me
Yeah, he had a stroke
He said it correctly though 13:24
Yeah he didn't say it that way, he said it the correct way, so what are you on about Banana Boat?
Glad to see that Yooka-Laylee and The Impossible Lair is a brilliant game. I was planning on picking it up and this episode of The Completionist has only reaffirmed this decision to buy it and support Playtonic. Hopefully Jirard decides to complete something a little easier like Blasphemous, which is a fun Metroidvaniaknight game, I kickstarted and had so much fun playing I bought an additional copy to complete again. Or maybe he could do Dead Cells or Indivisible? Maybe Transistor?

@@EternalSeabed Yeah, but in the era of the switch.
I mean . . . the impossibleness of the lair is the whole point.
They're Matt Griffin and Dan Murdoch. At lease give them some credit by mentioning their names man, they did an absolutely stellar job on this and made by far the most tunes for the soundtrack!
