Ni No Kuni returned with Wrath of the White Witch, spearheaded by Level 5 and brought to life by Studio Ghlibli. The animations are beyond your normal jrpg and the developers behind the game are very experienced with some hit games. How do these two elements combine? Watch and find out in my Ni No Kuni review!

Ni No Kuni Wrath of the White Witch was a joint effort. Ghibli on the outside and Level 5 on the inside. Bringing the two together was astounding and now with Ni No Kuni 2 announced (Ni No Kuni Revenant Kingdom) I'm so happy I was able to complete this game after all this time. Think Pokemon combined with Final Fantasy and then Miyazaki and you get Ni No Kuni. Play as Oliver as you set off on your journey to save your mother, meeting new friends and monsters along the way.
What did you think of my Ni No Kuni review? Does this make you excited for Ni No Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom?

What are your favorite and least favorite familiars?
The Completionist mine is the Mediocrist and his *BEARS*
With Oliver I used a Dynamite, Dragamuffin and Sweetpea Sprite. My Dragon was a beast at level 27 Psych Up then Earsplitter would take out most enemies.
Dinoceros's line was OP, give him earsplitter and watch them all fall down (except bosses, they don't like to fall down), Griphy(Griffy?) was also a life saver (literally) for Esther, rivaled my dinoceros in power
The pods from Nier:Automata
Jeremiah Hall
Hahahahahah, hilarious dude, you should be a comedian
Those cut scenes and overall art work style are five star. Incredible.
90% of my problems with this game would have been solved with the implementation of a block button rather than having to cycle through the menu to find the defend option.
Strain42
Or get to dodge... Kingdom Hearts be proud on that dodge roll.
Japan needs to learn that there a more than 4 buttons on a controller.
Skull_Latte well they learnt that in the new game
My biggest issue was how Familiars went to level 1 after metamorphic.
I never had a problem with them going back down to level 1. This game is easy enough that you can get them back up to their previous level pretty quickly, and their stats are all the better after it.
I love watching Oliver go up and down stairs it makes you feel like someone actually took time and care to make this game!
There's so many small quirks like that. Even how Oliver opens his mouth very slightly when he begins walking.
Absolutely true
11:33 That's Lord High Lord of the Fairies to you!
Damn right!
Jirard, now you can replay it on Nintendo Switch!
It's so fucking good on switch..perfect for the system
Duchesse de Berne YES JUST BOUGHT IT
The switch version feels like it was meant to be on the system
Wait really? I completed the game back in 2013 on PS 3 but maybe i should play it again on Switch for the nostalgia run.
Or just play again on my old dusty PS 3 beacuse it is still working
@@butelekbutelkowany8375 play on the switch it's much better
Totoro is not Ghibli's first feature-length movie. Laputa, Nausicaa, and Grave of the Fireflies all came before it.
I know that Nausicaa was made before the company was officially founded. I don't know about the others.
Matthew Alder just because it was made by some of the same people doesn't mean it was their first films. As far as ghibli goes totoro was the first produced by the company
Castle in the sky was the first film by ghibli
I fuckin hate Laputa aka Castle in the Sky. Almost as much as princess monokai
I don't think he was saying it was the first film ever. I think he mentioning that Totoro was one of the first films to be popular in West
I think I threw up a little when you said Dorito-flavored Mountain Dew...
hahaha it looks so gross
Me too
The ultimate gamer drink
@@_understandable that might be good, it's all about texture, I dont wanna drink doritos unless I'm forced to
Thrilled to hear Jirard talk about this, got a huge fondness for this game even though I was never able to play it.
Plus the Welsh fairies made me happy as a welsh woman, can't wait to get my hands on ni no kuni 2 now that I actually have a console it's on!
The first ni no Kuni is also being remastered on the ps4
Free on gamepass lol
Oh this takes me back! I bought NNK when it was first released when I was living in the middle of nowhere, Korea, to pass time. Holy smokes did it do just that! Two and a half gameplays and over 200 hours of dedication was put into this. I loved this game! This video makes me want to dig up my old copy and play it again,
"My favorite scene was none of it!". That got me. 10/10
Natetroxide actually I kind of enjoyed Final Fantasy Spirits Within Myself if you forget it's a Final Fantasy sort of thing you can actually enjoy it for the story it is. It's not bad
Aside from the joke I referred to, I do agree with you. Sometimes people will hold on to certain things, story or plot or characters from other entries into a series and dictate something solely on that, when it doesn't have any connection to it other than the name. Sometimes, if you just take a step back and look at something for what it is and stop looking at what it isn't, its not that bad.
Hey, I saw that movie in theaters!!!
YES! This is my favorite JRPG of all time. I’m so excited to get my Collector’s Edition of Revenant Kingdom!
Just waiting for school to end to pick up my pre ordered copy
Amazing game but persona 4 golden is better :p
Im waiting for mine to come!!
This game has my soul
Joshua Serrano amazing game but persona 3 is better
Don't forget that Level 5 made Yokai Watch.
Imo their two best games series are Ni no Kuni and Yokai Watch
@@lillith7257 both are good series. For me Professor Layton is one of my favorites
Actually, you don't need Seek Fortune to find the secret chests. The locations are marked as keyholes on the maps in the Wizard's Compendium.
Yes but seek fortune basically charts out their exact locations
As looking to the wizards companion and back to the map is tedious and more difficult than just simply using the spell
@@lillith7257 Yeah, but it's still really nice to have some of the stuff in the level range when you get access to the area, and lots of the stuff near the cities isn't useful for anything other than vendor trash if you wait on Seek Fortune.
What! I didn't notice that at all!
The only secret treasures I'd found were just me mashing A at "suspiciously empty" pieces of the world map.
Well, this is certainly a cool thing to learn since I'm playing through this on the Switch years and years after having first played this back on the PS3.
Yet another inspiring episode! Thanks and hope you enjoy Ni no Kuni II, Jirard.
I just finished playing this for the first time and despite its few flaws (the familiars and rare items were a bit much. Also the dragon riding music) I loved it. I'm older and have neither the time nor the wrist strength to play a lot of games anymore, so it's really nice to have a bright, simple game like this, even if I could see the ending coming a mile away.
This is one of my all time favorite games. So much charm.
This video is sponsored by Amino Acids. Building proteins since 1,000,000,000 BC (Or BCE if you prefer) #ad
Collecting all the familiars wasn't even as hard as getting the items for that fucking ax
Since you mentioned Professor Layton... it would be great to watch you and Alex play one of the games on Super Beard Bros.
TheDarkM YEESSSSS I could watch them actually use their brains
TheDarkM Yokai Watch is better
Professor Layton will always be one of my favourite game series' of all time.
i've 100%ed this game twice and i'm right about to buy the second game. this couldn't have come at a better time.
shadowfan2004 if 100% you need to max out all their levels?
nah you just have to evolve all the boys
Bruh the second game sucked so hard
Opened up my ni no kuni 2 collectors edition earlier......love it
I feel like the Wizard's Companion goes so underappreciated. It's definitely one of my highlights on playing the game for a second time, it's basically a built in wiki. It shows tons of information on nearly every enemy, tons of lore, interesting stories, foreshadowing, explanations and even the map proved very useful as it showed all the rough locations of the hidden treasures and forest dweller villages. At a lot of points in the game I said out loud "I know this, I studied my wizardry!" At least 25% of my 90 hours in the game were spent in the wizards companion I honestly want one irl
It's no surprise why this game is so beautiful, Studio Ghibli's artstyle is incredible. I didn't even know until a while ago that it was animated by Studio Ghibli, but it's obvious now that I know.
Dude, I've been working on this game for about 3 weeks and I've finally got the plat. I just want to say, thanks. I've been watching your vids in the background while endlessly grinding for alchemy ingredients. Just knowing that someone else does this crap too really helped me finish this. I almost dropped this game at least twice. That alchemy trophy is no joke.
Welcome to Japanese RNG, the evilest of all RNG.
Lmfao that description of you as 13 is something we can all relate to I think.
*Spot on.*
One of my favorite games from last gen. I was giddy when I heard it was coming to switch!
Omg this is my Literal Number 1 favorite game
Tbh I thought Oliver was like 8 years old at first
*(Sees title)
*(has war flashbacks of 100%ing the game)
*(Salutes)
"Good Luck sir"
Why does it seem like most Level-5 games have this whimsical vibe to it?
That's what I needed to hear at the end, after about 90 hours of gameplay my journey comes to an end. While I did not complete it entirely its been a lot of fun and memories were made.
"my favorite scene was none of it" i had to pause the video for a moment for a good chuckle
I didn't know you had a girlfriend. Good on you man! You deserve all the love you can get... from us and from your gf!
he mentions her on beard bros all the time, you should watch it it's tight #pikagate #wheat #stillcops
Oh! Thanks for informing me man! Il'l be sure to watch it!
Creepy comment.
One of my favorite PS3 games. Just listening to this again while I platinumed Revenant Kingdom
Yesyesyeayesyesyesyesyesyesyeayes!!!!!!!!!! I love you and your beard! I preordered the sequel after making this game my favorite of all time. Ni No Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom comes out in 5 minutes. I'm ready to explode!!!!!
Just completed the Remastered and this game is so amazing with great story and music that I spent almost my whole 60 hours completing it with my 5 year old son and he's enjoying it along the way. He even helped me to grind some levels lol.
That sims background soundtrack in the ad segment
*nostalgia much*
bruh, facts
I love Ghibli and I love this game seeing jirared complete this game makes my day
Trying to 100% complete a Level-5 game is an insane task to undertake. 100 hours would be considered a WR speedrun
FYI. "A land far, far away" is how the title should come off, not literally. (imho) Fairy tale vibes. Nice video and I picked up the sequel today.
Did you know that the DS version of the game came with an actual bound book of the wizard's companion which you need to play the game? You need to look up the spells the first time you use them and some of the puzzles rely on the player finding the answers in the actual physical book! Additionally it also has a few short stories that are written in a fairy tale style and that flesh out the Ni no Kuni world! It is such a shame that the DS version never made it across the ocean from Japan. I got the Japanese DS game and the book and it was an amazing feeling playing the game with the book in hand. It is also beautifully illustrated and explains the in-game mechanics very meticulously. You can basically feel the care and charm that was put into this game oozing from this book! I wish they also included it with the PS3 game but I suppose the costs to actually print that would be enormous.
Phew this was a lot of memories but I need to replay this so I can beat it XD I didn't get but about 30 minutes or so from the end of the White Witch's "castle" and then I started college and couldn't play games anymore.
Not going to lie, I've not done much post game. But trying to get an few specific familiars was painful. Even more so when the game decides to give you the second copy almost immediately while making the first one a complete PITA.
But that doesn't stop this game from being a complete joy to just replay every now and again.
I'm currently playing on the switch and I finally caught a toko. 10 hours later it is finally level 5. This is going to take a while.
I just platinum trophied Ni No Kuni Wrath of The White Witch remastered on my PS4 at the end of my 2019 Christmas vacation. Now I completely finished No no Kuni 1 as well as 2. lol.
1 of my just 3 platinum trophies, i loved this game sooooo much
the effing rare alchemy parts after the game is over is what I've never been able to complete, I haven't finished your video but if you did... YOURE A GOD
I played the game with the Japanese voices I've never played it in english I should tho lol
Shoutouts to that stand-up routine by those 2 faeries...I loved that shit. It was legit pretty funny.
Spirited Away was my first Studio Ghibli film!
I love this game. When I saw this, I dropped everything
so did i just as i was about to continue playing this exact game
Been waiting for this! I loved this game so much! I played it for like 3 weeks straight without break until I finished it.
I fucking love you so much for this, Gerard. I've wanted to see you complete this for a while. This game is a huge undertaking! You're doing God's work, son, keep up the great work
Jirard: *talks about pretty much all Level 5 games except one*
Rogue Galaxy: Am I a joke to you?
A friend of mine told me this was a bad game and I should save my money.
I believe he went on to complete this game later.
lol it's a bit addicting
I completed the game lore wise, but not familiar or equipment, because those rarest materials are a pain.
And they came from GOLDEN creatures as rare drops. Let that sink in. Double Planet creatures are hard enough to find as it is, let alone getting one tamable on defeat.
As soon as the hours are over 50 hours played you know its a finish it
wait people know about dark cloud? I thought it was the spellforce of the ps2
I honestly thought I was the only one who liked Dark Cloud.
Yeah I was only half watching the video but heard that and cracked up
Are you saying people don't know about Spellforce? o.O
Dark Cloud is way too underrated. I loved that game, especially the duels or the georama system. It really needs a remake.
Dark cloud was fantastic, dark chronicle on the other hand is one of the best PS2 games ever, imo. Please bring it back, another sequal is my dream game from Level 5.
I may be late to the party, but the last gaming console/handheld I owned was the 2DS. I got my Switch Lite this week, this game was on sale and this review did it for me. I'm enjoying it so far being that it's my first time playing it. Thank you, Jirard!
MAN, I love this game! This was actually the first JRPG I ever beat and is pretty much responsible for getting me into the genre in the first place despite being surrounded by it growing up. A lot of fond memories with this one ^_^
I have NEVER understood the people who claimed this game was Hard. The Bosses "really" telegraph their big attacks giving you ample time to issue the "defend all" command. Sure there were a few small spikes in difficulty, but i have seen people who claim the game required tons of grinding to finish the main story and i find that crazy
I think their getting hard confused with bad mechanics. The bosses aren't hard, but trying to effective play with how the mechanics are set up is. So much would've been better if defend, magic, and your items had their own assigned button during combat so you're not constantly shuffling pass actions
Because the sequel?
Because the sequel.
Just throwing this out there because I've already seen people talk about skipping ahead or that there's a sponsor:
If you want to see videos of this length, at this quality, this often, and you can't spare cash for Patreon or Red, it really isn't asking a lot to wait a few minutes or even 10 seconds to whitelist your Adblock blah blah run on sentence. Great work Jirard!
Please Complete the original Devil May Cry games
Man, I got the platinum in 84 hours. I don’t remember if I had to get all the familiars for the platinum but I totally did all the quests and the secret boss etc. in that time.
They should do a PS4 remaster of this game. Hyped for the sequel, but the first one is one of my favorite JRPGs ever.
Herman Falck How
I was thinking that to, because I don’t want to play the second after looking at the first one. The world and Pokemon aspect interest me more.
carlos sibrian
And playing second after playing one actually gives players the feels trip, for those who understood the story and lore.
Wish granted!
You can actually get hidden items before the seek fortune spell, they're marked as little x's on your wizard's companion map.
As much as I loved this game. I just really want a dark chronicle 3... I don't know why they don't think it's a good idea. Especially after finding out in this video that it sold so well.
I don't think words can express just how absolutely excited I am that you finally are covering Ni No Kuni! It's one of my all-time favorite games, and the impact and affect it had on me during an extremely hard time of my life was super meaningful. For real, I know that JRPGs take a while for you to cover because of how long they take but this is fantastic and further secures how good I feel about finally covering this game on my own channel. Can't wait to hear what you got to say on the sequel!
I had a really close friend a few years back and he loved this game and being a healer keeping a team of cute monsters going. He died back in 2016 and I'll always associate this game positively with my friendship with him, despite never owning or playing it myself.
I loved the book in the wizards edition they put alot of love and care into it
I remember playing a demo of this back in the day, and really wanting to get a PS3 just for it. I never did, but even still it remains one of my all-time favourite RPGs.
There is a magical phrase this game taught me: "If you're physically fighting with Oliver...you're doing it wrong." He is super squishy.
Jirard, you are like Chris Pratt all the time, forever.
This didn’t age well 😂😂
@@NicholasJWest how?
Jirard is voicing Mario aswell?
I think the biggest thing I took away from this video was that dark cloud wasn't a unknown series. I didn't know it was popular at all and everyone I met never heard of it. Shame we probably will never get a third one.
Please port this to PC!! The sequel is on PC. Do it level 5. Please do it!
This was such an amazing episode!!!! I’m so glad you completed this game!!!
Next up: Witcher 3 + DLC.
See you in 2019!
Missed out on this one but I'm glad to hear Level 5 has still got it; Dark Cloud 2 (has some great music too btw) and Rogue Galaxy are two of my favorite RPGs (even have the soundtrack to Rogue Galaxy). Now I really want to play Revenant Kingdom.
Is Xenoblade Chronicles in the pipeline? I know its hard to restart after getting so far in but Id really like to see that game on the show. All three for that matter :)
I would love to see a video on Okami! Its a very rewarding 100% completion
Whu does no one remember the Level 5 gem Rogue Galaxy?
Patrick R. And nobody remembers _Attack of the Friday Monsters!_
Castle Of Coligostro was the first "Ghibli" film, they formed the studio after that Lupin movie
Ni No Kuni. Is on my list of games to get and that list keeps on growing.
No lies just saw your channel and watched the video intro about 15 times. Level up and beard mode dwl. Crazy
Just one minir correction at 1:50 mark... Studio Ghibli started with Nausica, not Totoro. But yes, it was Totoro that made them famous worldwide. And before Nausica, Miyazaki was already a legend in animation, and had directed a Lupin III movie, The Castle of Cagliostro and many others like Future Boy Conan and a bunch of World Masterpiece Theaters
This was so wonderful~
I remember the days that i searched 2 years for the collector's edition and never found it... but after 2 years i just bought it on the ps store and loved every minute of it.
I downloaded that app a while ago. It was great except I had a lot of creepers message me. I had to delete it 😞 but I liked it other than that!
I’m so excited to play this game and the 2nd one! I’ve had the first one for a while and I forgot I had it 😅
Franticpixel sorry that happened
A Guy Named Boots eh, it’s ok. I’m willing to give it another shot. Tbh I kind of forgot about it. I miss seeing all the fan art though!
Franticpixel I've been meaning to give Amino a Go so maybe il try it
A Guy Named Boots if you do let me know and I’ll add you!
Franticpixel Hey thanks i made one, its A Guy Named Boots 😊😊
real talk......am i the only one who thinks swaine is adorable. he’s prob my character followed by drippy and king tom
When talking about the creatures in this game, rather then comparing to Pokemon, they really are more like a Proto Yokai-Watch, which Level-5 would put out just a few years later.
I LOVED THIS GAME. it was the first ever rpg game i’ve played and beated, it was so fun.
Just got this for $1 on sale and cashed in some nintendo coins, really excited to play this. My first jrpg so I'm pumped!
Freakin' Sims 3 music is total earworms. Great video!
Even after knowing the full story and having had five years between discovery and getting the game finally into my hands, it's still a game I absolutely love playing after school and a game I love delving into. I can spend hours and hours flipping through the Wizard's Companion alone without feeling tired or bored. God, I love this game - Years of knowing the story and wanting to play the game was 110% worth it. I didn't have a PS4. Originally I was hesitating on buying a Switch - I wanted to play BOTW as well as BOTW2 when it later came out, but I didn't want to invest in a Switch for only two games. Then I heard Ni No Kuni was being ported/remade for the Switch. That alone would've tipped me over, I wanted to play the game so bad - it's been worth every single penny, even after five years of knowing the story and waiting for the day I can finally play.
(...if you think this was a long rant, just wait until I stop talking about the sequel. I have very many angry words, especially where Evan is involved. I really didn't like him-)
This game is in my top 5. Thank you Jirard! Also Ireally want this game and the sequel on the Switch.
Oh man, as a Welshman, can I just say: That accent is ridiculously OTT. I kinda love it but its the accent that we do to mock the accents of Welsh people from the deep valleys! And even they dont really sound like that haha!
Man, Level-5 loves to make individual art assets for every item in their games. I love them for it, but I'm sure those costs could be put in other places for an overall more polished game. (Opinion based on Dark Cloud 1, & Rouge Galaxy)
Seriously hope completing Okami is on the agenda, and not just because I can't wait to hear Jirard mangle the name. It could take a Completionist to make the world truly understand Golden Fury and Brown Rage
Great game, great review! But still not Persona 5.
ijehal Why do you need another person to review and praise the fuck out of Persona 5 when you A) have a year worth of reviews to work with, B) you probably already have played or watched someone play through it, C) This was a Ni No Kuni review to celebrate the new Ni No Kuni game's release, and I doubt he'd review a game like Persona 5 out of the blue considering the D) 192 personas he would need to register in the compedium and having to finish a NG+ playthrough in about a 30 to 40 hour game to 100% it which would take a long, long ass time and put a lot of extra stress on Jirard.
I agree that this is a Ni No Kuni review and that Persona talk is kinda off-topic, but as for the "having to finish an NG+ playthrough in about a 30 to 40 hour game" ... did you not notice that THIS game took him *252* HOURS to 'Complete' for ONE playthrough?! I think a NewGame+ playthrough would be the least of his concerns, really, in comparison. :)
Tobias Barzydlo I suppose. Regardless, 60 to 90 hours is still quite a bit of time investment for a genre Jirard doesn't dive into all that often and for a game series he has never covered before. If he were to complete any persona game, why would he not just either wait for P3HD and either A) publish a P3Fes/Portable completionist during that one's release week, or B) wait until that one's out and cover it much later, or even C) start with an older Persona game like 1 or 2? Starting with the sixth entry in a series when the fourth that is considered the start of "modern Persona" is going to be remastered somewhere in the not too distant future, and when there's five games prior to it if someone were to start with the series' official beginning, would be rather weird to do.
Yeah, at least it'll be a lot shorter than this one was. Can probably 100% in less than 100 hours pretty easily, if you go in with a completionist mindset. You can max all social links and stats in one go if you know what you're doing (by which I mean using a guide) and from there NG+ is pretty much just a persona and a boss.
ijehal it's not Persona 5 stop judging a game by another franchise I like to judge RPGs based on their own merits rather than say oh it's not like this franchise how about this game is made by a different company different Focus different mindset. Persona 5 is made by a different company entirely Atlas is a good company yes but they are a different company different mindset different Focus from level five okay?
