That's a pretty random fact. If a small developer, makes two awesome games and the third is also awesome, surprising isn't the expression I would choose, that all I meant with that.
just based on the joy i got from bastion and transistor, this was a buy for me just to absorb the atmosphere, art, and music. glad to hear the game play held up as well.
I definitely agree with the buy verdict. I pre-ordered this game knowing full and well that it would not disappoint. So far, my expectations have been surpassed! I love this game, and I am so happy that I chose it to be my first let's play video for my channel. Honestly, I'm scrambling to get a better microphone and such just so my videos can do the game more justice!
The art comparisons to Ralph Bakshi are spot on. Also cover artworks of Hawkwind and other '80s progressive/psychedelic rock bands. Oh, and the announcer totally sounds like Victor Saltzpyre from Vermintide. Can't believe it's actually the same voice actor from Bastion and Transistor again.
I watched the whole thing and honestly didn't really see or hear anything that would be a spoiler. I didn't pause to read the text or anything, but nothing stood out.
That's an awful way to read/watch reviews. The whole point is to get someone's opinion on aspects of a game so you have a better idea about whether you'll like it or not. A single sentence isn't gonna help much.
I strongly agree. Its pretty much an automatic purchase when its a Supergiant Games release. Their two prior titles Bastion and Transistor were nothing short of amazing and Pyre is no different. The game looks like its an absolute blast to play. I really like the character animations. The soundtrack is right up with the likes of Transistor and Ori and the Blind Forest as far as quality music is concerned. I also like the game's colorful and vibrant graphical aesthetic. The fact that the game runs at 60 fps is the cherry on top of what's an already sweet cake. Multiplayer is local only and repetition does start to settle in towards the end, but those two issues in no way shape or form detract from the overall great experience that pyre has to offer. Thanks a lot Karak!
Game looks great. In terms of multiplayer, you probably also heard the early talks about it. They didn't even consider it originally and only added it because everyone kept getting confused as to why they didn't want to add it. Couch multiplayer being there is already a small miracle.
Former subscriber to the AJS, saw your name mentioned, came here, love your work. Thanks for not calling your subscribers toxic, whiny, entitled, and set out to destroy you. I've been looking at this game for some time, and am pleased to see it reviewed. AJ used to review smaller more indie type of games like this but he can't be bothered to do the AAA ones either.
Nice. I preordered this on impulse because I like the banner saga games so much. Its nice to know I didn't mess up. PS. Love your reviews. Keep 'em up.
This game was so fucking amazing. My only criticism: The framerate on PS4. On several rites my game would stutter about so friggin badly that I could barely tell what the fuck was going on. I love this game, but at the same time I feel like it has no fucking business to drop in frames. How the hell can Horizon Zero Dawn run buttery smooth with some of the best graphics I've ever seen on console ever, but this game completely loses it's shit whenever something actually happens gameplaywise? … still: 10/10
This is a really colourful review. It's really appreciated. Really good wakeup call that I need a game just as colourful in my life. I wasn't planning on buying any games this year.... but my Steam name has been Rukey since the announcement trailer so I guess this is where I break that streak.
Is that the usual Barret / Korb music I'm hearing? If so, I think they deserved a little recognition, they did an amazing job in every game they scored.
Yes, I watched that part of the review and since it wasn't mentioned (at least that I heard) I thought it was worthy mentioning that the music is performed by the same people that scored Bastion and Transistor. For a music maniac like me that could be the only reason I needed to buy the game (since I can't find the OST for sale on their site, at least yet). To be clear, I wasn't bashing at the review, it's awesome as usual, I just thought it was an info worth mentioning.
Watched several of your videos and you do an amazing job covering lots of aspects of games that many don't and thus earned a subscriber. Keep up the good work and God bless.
I picked it up last night and have maybe 5 hours into it so far. I'm really intrigued by it -- I feel like I'm reading a book which reinforces the narrative in a way that I find really pleasing. The buddy road trip also reminds me of JoJo's Bizarre Adventures and the Rite gameplay reminds me of sports anime. Combined with the gorgeous visuals and music I think it's a really interesting combination. I don't often play interactive narrative driven games and I haven't played games like Bloodbowl, so it all feels very refreshing to me. I'm definitely looking forward to playing more tonight when I get home!
I'm actually very surprised by this. I saw this game at pax and was under the impression that it was a small multiplayer only title so to hear there is no online multiplayer was unexpected. On the flip side, seeing that not only does it have a campaign, but that the campaign is solid is welcome news.
dude, you know how much work it is to create portraits for all of these characters? the studio has one 2D artist! ONE! animating all these characters in conversations in this fidelity is a task for an entire studio and even then you're not guaranteed this quality of design
dude, I watch dozens of reviews for every single game that comes out, because I'm a big time gamer who cares about the industry plus I work in IT on Wall St. and I got to say, you BY FAR give the best reviews and the most entertaining, also the most thorough reviewer out there. Just wanted to share that with you. I have been watching your reviews for years and I have never commented before, Hell this is my first time commenting on RUclips ever in my life. My only wish is that you did Switch reviews, even though I have all gaming platforms the switch is my primary place to play since I travel to work in NYC everyday.
Thanks, man. You got me to take the plunge and buy this game. Of course, playing is believing, but I still value your opinion most of all throughout the land of game reviews, so I'm pretty excited. Keep being a badass!
I don't know if anyone mentioned this yet but Supergiant Games stated on twitter that they had originally planned for an online PvP mode. They decided to scrap it, because they weren't able to get it to work on a level they were satisfied with, rather than selling a - in their eyes - subpar product.
Frank Babcock the 3 Supergiant games are so diffrent from each other I'd say it's unfair to compare them, but that might just be me being a huge fanboy
I like Bastion, but I think Transistor is a big improvement over it. - The gameplay in Transistor mixed turn-based and real-time combat brilliantly and it always feel rewarding. The game also rewards your creativity with mixing and matching your powers. Bastion while giving you access to a tons of weapons could still feel repetitive. - I like the narrator on Transistor more. This is more of a personal opinion. But I also think the characters in Transistor are more memorable. - Graphic wise. Transistor is better, largely due to it's being released later, but the art style of both are unique and age very well. - Soundtrack, equal. Both have AMAZING soundtracks that I still listen to this day. Personally, I would give Bastion an 8/10 and Transistor 9/10. Really love Supergiant games and I always buy 2 copies of their games to support the good stuffs the give us for a nice price.
ki last that's where I am with this game. I appreciated the atmosphere and mood of their previous two games, but wasn't blown away by the gameplay. This, on the other hand, fires off all my cylinders
I loved both Bastion and Transistor and think this games looks interesting. BUT until your video, I had no idea how it played. I couldn't make anything from the Dev videos.
I see a lot of people, even on day 1, saying not to buy the game because it's just a story book that has really slow pages. I don't blame them for maybe not watching trailers and seeing gameplay, etc, to be surprised by a new game, I do that shit myself, but you can't hate it because it's not a clone of the only other 2 games Supergiant Games has made... THey tried something new for their third game and it's basically perfect in my eyes. Gameplay is unique (though some may argue) and the story is so immersive because it does give details like a story book. The fact that I feel like I am in the game simply because the exiles call me "he" is just amazing on it's own. Idk. Whatever. Just venting. :P
ACG I hear you man but watching your channel grow has been awesome. I live the 9 to 5 grind and seeing you keep plugging away and actually beat the big boys in views is inspiring as cliche as that may sound. The way you work and the way you review it's only a matter of time.
ACG by the way your plugs are showing up more and more on Reddit. Maybe some angry reviewer named joe caused it but whatever the reason I'm glad I've seen your name out there more. Anyways I'm a nobody corporate tool but just wanted you to know I appreciate your work and Ill pay for that appreciation on your Patreon. Hell man you have saved me money anyways.
Ty G I'm pissed off that it says "Free" on PSN not free to play.. and once you download it they drop "you have to have a founders pack or a code to redeem" Some of the scummiest shit I've ever seen
Sad thing is it looked fun to play and probably would have dropped the $20 but after that, I refuse. I'll buy Pyre and keep playing Splatoon 2, and plus we get Sundered this Friday too
Nibelhiem86 no, kickstarter is to "kick start" a game. This thing has been in dev for years now. They're asking $40-60 for a free game a year before it becomes free. Rather than just make it free now and let people buy the packs for the "bonuses" (read: p2skip crap) they have
Is it possible for the AI to make mistakes? I like it when in a racing game, ther AI suddenly crashes and doesn't drive perfectly. Here, you describe that the aura is getting bigger if multiple team-members are next to each other. Does the AI run here and there into this barrier and make mistakes like a human would?
Marco Funke Yes. I've seen enemies fall into map crevasses trying to dodge an attack, fail to track a character properly and leave themselves open, and even run into a totem I was rather visibly placing.
great! i'd have probably snagged the 2€ discount without the review, since supergiant has yet to disappoint me. it's reassuring that the game doesn't have technical problems unlike so many other releases these days though.
Hey, I was wonder if you would be able do a review for Fortnite. It looks good, but I'm not sure. Some of the reviews I have seen said it was not great. But they don't give me much info about the game. You always give good reviews and give good info about the game. Either way keep up the great reviews!
Are there any meaningful dialogue choices? Or any dialogue choices at all? I only listened through the video to avoid any possible visual spoilers, and actually already pre-ordered because your review was enough to tip me over lol. I'm just curious to know.
Fool Fooly Yes. Different choices can give different boosts to characters, give you different information on their backstories, and even affect the characters' endings.
i lol''d at the Jafar reference there. i never would've compared the narrator/announcer for Pyre to Jafar from Aladdin, well it never came to my mind anyway. i was thinking Tim Curry for whatever reason.
supergiant games is like one of the 3 developers I genuinely trust. the other 2 are runic games and santa ragione. notable mentions are thing trunk (but they only entered the market recently) and retro studios (probably the single most talented dev team there is, despite the fact they changed their staff over time, but they are kinda bound by whatever bullshit decision nintendo throws at them). it's a nice world.
How on Earth did you get so much playtime out of this? I left the game open for an hour when I got sick and still ended up at just barely 10 hours. And by the end I was constantly seeing the same events over and over again. Also that whole end game content twist was shown in the trailers, so it's kind of surprising to see you were shocked by the "twist".
Karak, are you planning on reviewing Sundered? Just curious. Also if you are, what is the embargo date on reviews?Oh and as always, yr reviews are the best, most informative and entertaining. Fu..rget IGN, Gamespot and polygon, ACG is where it's at.
Summary
Great single-player campaign and story, multiplayer is local only but that doesn't stop this from being a huge surprisingly awesome title.
Really glad you enjoyed this one. I've been really looking forward to it ever since I first discovered it a few months ago.
Why surprisingly? It's supergiantgames.
other than it being a fantasy devil inspired DND game, probably also the fact that I don't care who makes a game.
That's a pretty random fact. If a small developer, makes two awesome games and the third is also awesome, surprising isn't the expression I would choose, that all I meant with that.
k
I love Supergiants desire to keep pushing themselves into new territory....and they go into each title fully with something surprising and artful.
It's a Supergiant game. OF COURSE IT'S A FUCKING BUY
its everyone's personal opinion, to me transistor is such a brilliant well made game.
Transistor was excellent, loved it and Bastion. Can't wait to play Pyre.
I like both of the previous games, but after one "fight" this one was an instant refund.
Bad decision... But to each their own I guess.
Transistor is they weakest game. But it still pretty good.
sad to see that the AAA drought is coming to an end it's great for indie games to get time to shine
just based on the joy i got from bastion and transistor, this was a buy for me just to absorb the atmosphere, art, and music. glad to hear the game play held up as well.
SkelliGGwent this or nier automota
Ashley , the female vocal in all Supergiant's games is really talented and captures the atmosphere of the game
I definitely agree with the buy verdict. I pre-ordered this game knowing full and well that it would not disappoint. So far, my expectations have been surpassed! I love this game, and I am so happy that I chose it to be my first let's play video for my channel. Oh, and the announcer totally sounds like Victor Saltzpyre from Vermintide. Can't believe it's actually the same voice actor from Bastion and Transistor again.
Skipped to the end to hear the verdict. Don't want anything to potentially be spoiled. Love supergiant games,
did the same trying to go in as blind as possible, didnt even watch the whole launch trailer that was just released
I watched the whole thing and honestly didn't really see or hear anything that would be a spoiler. I didn't pause to read the text or anything, but nothing stood out.

I just review on what we get. Not what the talks were possibly about. It makes more sense that way for me
Nah, I get you. It's just so strange they were adamant about not adding something that is so strikingly missing according to people.
This channel is seriously the best. Deep insightful reviews without that feeling of lack of originality.
Former subscriber to the AJS, saw your name mentioned, came here, love your work. Thanks for not calling your subscribers toxic, whiny, entitled, and set out to destroy you. The best reviewer on the youtubes
I DO JUEGOS Game Review
fact!
I DO JUEGOS agreed.
I DO JUEGOS how many youtubeS are there?
Loved Bastion, platinum'd Transistor, so hell yeah I'm getting this!
Nice. I preordered this on impulse because I like the banner saga games so much. Its nice to know I didn't mess up. PS. Love your reviews. Keep 'em up.
I cant for the life of me work out WTF is happening during the gameplay
thats what makes it so great, pyre is so unique.
It's real time right? - Not turn based
This game was so fucking amazing.
My only criticism: The framerate on PS4. On several rites my game would stutter about so friggin badly that I could barely tell what the fuck was going on.

Excellent review i pre-ordered this a week ago and was just curious if you were to going to review this and it didn't disappoint. Till the next time
I may not be too interested in this game but i still watch the review because i enjoy your summary and the length of the vids you put up.
This is a really colourful review. It's really appreciated. Really good wakeup call that I need a game just as colourful in my life.

Why, yes it is.
Man, I love your reviews. Top notch stuff!
Another solid review. You are my go to reviewer! Love your channel.

really good review as always hope you get more views and subs soon because you deserve it :)
Wow great review and love the structure of it , you just gained one subscriber +1. :)
I'm getting it as soon as it's available on GOG.
Goran A. Lol

huh
Already have this preloaded on my PS4! Can't wait for noon tomorrow to start playing
5:30 you saying Hedwyn is puberty-ridden?? He a MAN.
The story was so great the characters were amazing and the ending made me genuinely cry
Iden Versio do u have to have internet to play it
dude, I watch dozens of reviews for every single game that comes out, because I'm a big time gamer who cares about the industry plus I work in IT on Wall St. and I got to say, you BY FAR give the best reviews and the most entertaining, also the most thorough reviewer out there. Been wondering about this one for a while, thanks for the review.
I'm so glad it is good cause I'd be sad if SuperGiant Fucked up
Those colours are amazing and gorgeous. Thank you for the review
Super Giant Games doing their magic again, after Bastion and Transistor. Another great title, with fantastic gameplay and soundtrack.
I was impressed by the graphics, and then I heard the sound production and music and I wanted this game
Nice. Supergiant Games is now 3 out of 3. Can't wait to see their next venture but in the meantime I have a game to buy.
Supergiant games are the few companies I come to fully trust from their games so it's an instant buy from me. So glad you enjoyed it, great review
I don't know if anyone mentioned this yet but Supergiant Games stated on twitter that they had originally planned for an online PvP mode.
They decided to scrap it, because they weren't able to get it to work on a level they were satisfied with, rather than selling a - in their eyes - subpar product.
You are the best reviewer of games. Your opinion means a lot to me and I greatly appreciate it brotha.
Cool, I'll get it eventually when I finaly manage to finish transistor :p
wow this game came out of nowhere - great review as always!
i've been waiting for this game to come out for a while and i'm ecstatic that you gave this a good review. Going to get it now :)
SuperGiant's games are amazing, and I bet this is a masterpiece like the other two. Especially in sound and world design. :)
Did you ... did you ... did you just give a shout out to Radiata Stories at 1:38?
Love that game.
this is not for me, but I still hit the like button
No reason to hate the reviewer. Even if you hated the game after all.
How would you rank this game among the other Supergiant Games?
not sure
Frank Babcock the 3 Supergiant games are so diffrent from each other I'd say it's unfair to compare them, but that might just be me being a huge fanboy
I like Bastion, but I think Transistor is a big improvement over it.
- The gameplay in Transistor mixed turn-based and real-time combat brilliantly and it always feel rewarding. The game also rewards your creativity with mixing and matching your powers. Bastion while giving you access to a tons of weapons could still feel repetitive.

Haha, if you really buy 2 copies, you should give me one, just for showing the initiative for being the first to ask ;)
Bastion>pyre>Transistor (havent played pyre yet. )
(I would rank Transistor higher but the fighting destroyed the game a little bit for me )
Pretty much top tier visual design.
May be the first Supergiant game I enjoy beyond the visuals and audio by the sound of it.
ki last that's where I am with this game. I appreciated the atmosphere and mood of their previous two games, but wasn't blown away by the gameplay. This, on the other hand, fires off all my cylinders
Nice review keep it up man
Being a Supergiant Games' game at least you have an eargasm ensured :)
I bought this game based on your review. It looks really unique. I'll probably be playing it on my channel.
SomberSoulsGaming does it require internet
I loved both Bastion and Transistor and think this games looks interesting. BUT until your video, I had no idea how it played. I couldn't make anything from the Dev videos.
Historic year for gaming. Please tell me Logan Cunningham is back as the narrator.
Reminds me of Pitball, an old PS1 game that was so bad it was amazing, but good. I'll have to get it :D
Just wanna say, I think you might be the best game reviewing channel ever since AJS channel died and became a sellout media.
The fact that I feel like I am in the game simply because the exiles call me "he" is just amazing on it's own. Idk. Whatever. Just venting. :P
Anyone know if acg will review sundered before its release?
Hell yeah ACG! You're getting as much as or more views than the big boys these days (ign, gamespot etc). Keep it up my man.
thanks. only like 11 more years and I will be making some money hahahaha
Hell man you have saved me money anyways.
my sincere thanks man
Can you go a bit deeper into what you're doing in multiplayer? Is it versus? Or is there some kind of coop?
Thanks. Great review as always. Bought the game because of this and loving it so far
i wish theres spectator when the rites play ,like cheering people when your banish enemies or you get banish
Hey,man. Where do you get the time to play and review all these games? Awesome review btw.
uhm...I haven't reviewed a game in many days. wut?
Hey ACG are you planning on doing a review of fortnite? looks like an interesting game. would love to see what you think about it.
Ty G I'm pissed off that it says "Free" on PSN not free to play.. and once you download it they drop "you have to have a founders pack or a code to redeem"
Some of the scummiest shit I've ever seen
Sad thing is it looked fun to play and probably would have dropped the $20 but after that, I refuse. I'll buy Pyre and keep playing Splatoon 2, and plus we get Sundered this Friday too
Julian Salazar that's because it will be free when it is released. Right now is early access for "founders" which is basically like kickstarters
Nibelhiem86 no, kickstarter is to "kick start" a game. This thing has been in dev for years now. They're asking $40-60 for a free game a year before it becomes free. Rather than just make it free now and let people buy the packs for the "bonuses" (read: p2skip crap) they have
I want to play either this or Transistor in the upcoming weeks, which should I pick?
I trust your reviews over ign, polygon and other major company. Thank you so much for your work.
Hey Karak, any chance you going back and doing a Bloodborne review?
I loved Bastion and Transistor, but sorta unsure about this one. I'm not yet sold by the idea of magical basketball matches.
I will continue to support Supergiant. All three of their games have been stellar.
Bought this, will you be reviewing Sundered as well ? those are my 2 checks this month :)
yes
I love Supergiant games, how awesome would this be on the Switch...great on the go...maybe one day.
jay jayson ain't it on the switch yet?
Wish I could get my hands on a demo. But I trust SuperGiant.
my dude its worth, but stop watching reviews you will get spoil
Hey, dude, have you played Kingsway yet?
Hello, first reply here.
Thank you for reviewing, keep up the good work.
Damn it ... not the 1st reply.
great!
i'd have probably snagged the 2€ discount without the review, since supergiant has yet to disappoint me. it's reassuring that the game doesn't have technical problems unlike so many other releases these days though.
so is ruck's VA in this game?
Logan Cunningham? You probably didn't notice but you heard his voice in this video. He's the main announcer / narrator that ACG talked about
'I collect feet' - ACG-2017 :'D
Hey, I was wonder if you would be able do a review for Fortnite. It looks good, but I'm not sure. Some of the reviews I have seen said it was not great. But they don't give me much info about the game. You always give good reviews and give good info about the game.
Either way keep up the great reviews!
As a work around for no online MP, you can actually use share play on PS4 :)
Good video mate 👍🏻
Wish they brought back the narrator from Bastion. I feel like he'd fit in very well here.
The Rites spectator dude is voiced by the same guy who did the narrator from Bastion and the sword from Transistor.
The announcer is Logan Cunningham, the same bloke. Talented VA.
That range fo his voice!!!
Ridiculous.
death_by_doom that's all the same guy? Wow he has some range, impressive
Does the gameplay get difficult? Seems like you just bait the enemy to the top or bottom of the screen then pass it to a player with an open lane...
difficulty discussed in the review
For sure, missed it the first listen. Thanks for the great reviews!
And Supergiant Games does it again! Thanks for the review. Can't wait to play it myself!
Why does it seem like games release on PS4 and PC, rather than Xbox and PC?
Because that's exactly what's happening. I've noticed that trend as well.
i lol''d at the Jafar reference there. i never would've compared the narrator/announcer for Pyre to Jafar from Aladdin, well it never came to my mind anyway. i was thinking Tim Curry for whatever reason.
supergiant games is like one of the 3 developers I genuinely trust.
the other 2 are runic games and santa ragione.
notable mentions are thing trunk (but they only entered the market recently) and retro studios (probably the single most talented dev team there is, despite the fact they changed their staff over time, but they are kinda bound by whatever bullshit decision nintendo throws at them).
it's a nice world.
Is this a longer game or along the lines of Supergiant's previous titles where it's over in 6-10 hours?
Endyo at $20 I can't imagine it being any longer than bastion or transistor.
Endyo around 12 is what ive been hearing
Endyo at 10:40, he say 12h
created by Supergiant games you say? Automatic a must buy for me.
How on Earth did you get so much playtime out of this? I left the game open for an hour when I got sick and still ended up at just barely 10 hours. And by the end I was constantly seeing the same events over and over again. Also that whole end game content twist was shown in the trailers, so it's kind of surprising to see you were shocked by the "twist".
we dont all watch the same stuff. SHOCKER
I need this on the switch.
anyone else was thinking about Blitzball while watching this?
Karak, are you planning on reviewing Sundered? Just curious. Also if you are, what is the embargo date on reviews?Oh and as always, yr reviews are the best, most informative and entertaining. Fu..rget IGN, Gamespot and polygon, ACG is where it's at.
