Got a lot of feedback here about the 'exclusive' section. In hindsight, I regret including that. Some people said it was about platform bias, but it was just a few weeks ago that I called out Square for making the latest FFVII Remake DLC a PS5 exclusive. Tbh when it comes to exclusive deals, I think something different about each of them because each one is a little bit different. I think this vid was a good example of what happens when you try to talk about that stuff in a review - it just becomes a distraction. A lot of the comments section was about that when it should have been about the game. So I take feedback, and I agree. I'll likely talk about this sort of stuff in the weekly news show (when its relevant) but I'll keep the exclusive discussions out of the reviews (except when it's really vital to talk about). Thanks for the feedback.
I think it was a valid comment in that it may not reach the audience that it could have on console given it is not on gamepass and not on PS or Switch. Don’t know why people would be sensitive to that.
I agree Derek. There were some valid arguments in there. Anyway, big thank you Ralph for putting captions on this video. That is an underappreciated feature.
What bothers me about this is that reviewers keep demanding small studios to port their games to as much platforms as possible, while the big first party ones can have it easy and develop for just one. I mean, you people know that porting a game to different platforms takes time and resources, right?
@@derekc9234 But hes reviewing a game, hes not reviewing the systems that they appear on. Like he said that discussion is for another time. What system the game appears on should not effect the outcome of a game review. leave that to fanboys and girls.
The fact that a 1 or 2 person team making something super impressive is now not even that uncommon anymore shows just how incredibly indie developers truly are
Or how far the engines, assets, tools etc. has come. Two people farming an entire field using plough and bull, thats something. But give them tractor and modern technology, it becomes everyday stuff. Not that it takes away from the creativity of the indie devs, but it gives them more time to engage in actual creative work. For example, Nanite in UE5 eliminates the need for retopologizing and creating different LODs for many many assets. Usually, it's a very time consuming, mechanical work, to the point most big studios outsource those work to other countries. And UE5 removed that roadblock for indie devs. Give these people, who are working so hard on the tools, their due respect as well.
And also shows how much triple A developers don't have an excuse. It's sucks that the conversation that companies like EA and Ubisoft suck is only prominent in the west, and still not what the majority thinks
9:57 This is untrue, because you do in fact regain your "ammunition" by hitting some objects such as mushrooms and vases or enemies. See 10:04 where you get those white slots back by hitting the big guy. Also, some enemies shoot projectiles which can be reflected back to whatever. Personally, I found the combat really enjoyable, easily on par with Hollow Knight which at first seems simple, but offers a lot of options in the end. Get a few hits with your melee weapon, dodge and hit the enemy with projectiles, charge up a strong attack and swing it out. Death's Door is definitely one of the strongest indie competitors this year.
Yeah I think this review really missed the mark on the combat. Especially when complaining about it. I just hope his not using the available mechanics through the entire game doesn't put people off from playing it especially cause he had so much to say.
I feel like you omitted the the most important part of the combat: You recharge your ranged weapon by hitting enemies in melee. This might not change your stance on it but it was on my mind constantly during my playthrough
Combat is FUN. And I love the simplicity of it. It's smooth and I like how the bow charges with melee kills. I've been dying for a worthy successor to Hyper Light Drifter and even though the visual style is different, I'm getting heavy vibes from this one.
I’m thinking he didn’t upgrade the spells. The upgraded spells, especially the hook change the combat up a lot and offer a lot more “expression” as he put it.
Yeah, he definitely didnt do more to upgrade the combat because finding the bosses to upgrade skills were incredible. He doesnt really discuss the hidden areas here.
9:58 did you miss that landing melee attacks refills your ammo? While the mechanics are fairly simple, I found plenty of the combat encounters to be quite challenging as well.
Oh man. At this point, he finally uses a ranged spell, depleting all his ammo, then immediately after refills it by attacking the enemy with the melee weapon. But the voice over says "you typically won't have a source of ammo nearby", which couldn't be further from the truth. Every enemy is a source of ammo. And for every puzzle that requires ranged spells, there are actually other sources of ammo nearby. Well, yea. This game is about discovery and exploration. If you miss something like this, the game won't explain it to you. You have to find things out by yourself.
“This looks so polished.” This is actually what I said after seeing a gameplay video a few weeks back. Now, more impressed knowing it was created by TWO devs only. Kudos to the team.
Technically the website says thay partner with "talented designers from all over the world" so maybe they contract a lot of the work out. Honestly it's almost the only way a game like this can be built. Look at all the assets this game has.
The combat isn’t just attack and dodge. There’s a charge up heavy attack, ranged attack, charged roll attack, and a few different weapons to use all with totally different mechanics.
Making this game exclusive was actually probably a good choice for them since they are a small studio, they could use the Microsoft funds for all that polish, and it’s also hard for small studios to release games for multiple platforms all at once anyways and no one is buying a Switch for Hades but that didn’t stop them from making it a timed exclusive so what’s different here
I don't know if Hades was intentionally a timed exclusive as much as Supergiant only had the resources to port it to one console, they're still a pretty small studio after all and have their no crunch policy and whatnot. They spent a fair amount of Hades's development time rewriting the engine they make their games on just so porting anything after Hades would become easier in future. They only ported it to the portable console first because it's a natural fit for the game, and the ports to the other two consoles are only coming just over half a year after it launched. After launch they quickly realised that the game was popular enough to be worth porting to the other two. It's the reason why they never bothered porting Pyre to Switch despite porting Bastion and Transistor well after those games launched. It just didn't make economic sense despite the fact that Pyre is both a superb game and a perfect fit for the Switch, simply because it isn't critically acclaimed.
@@weirdslime262 I agree but my point is just that since they knew Hades wasn’t coming to X box and PlayStation at launch it would have benefitted their budget if they were able to sign an exclusive deal and they would still be able to release the game on x box and PlayStation if it did well (which in hindsight it did extremely well) so with Death’s Door it’s possible that Acid Nerve didn’t have the resources for a PlayStation and/or Switch port at launch so an exclusive deal would just be free money, and if their deal with x box is timed they can still release it on PlayStation and/or Switch if it does well
@@anthonytitone I'm just not so sure that the companies that be are so eager to give exclusive deals to brand new indie studios with no track record. Like sure, they could try the game and think it may be worth it, but this doesn't strike me as a game with enough WOW factor for Microsoft to bother. Especially since it isn't on gamepass either, and I'd like to think that Microsoft would mandate that for any exclusives. I feel like the more likely reason is that the Xbox and PC architecture are so similar that Xbox just happened to be the easiest console to port it to. The only exception would be if Devolver has a contract with Microsoft that opens the possibility for any game they publish.
@@weirdslime262 Devolver and Xbox do seem to be more friendly with each other than they are wit PlayStation, the publisher probably has a bigger say about where it’s sold and where it’s available than any of us know.
Just bought this on PlayStation yesterday. So far this title has been an enjoyable playthrough. Ender Lilies Tails of Iron Deaths Door - Three Indie titles I'm very much enjoying. These games are worth the purchase. I'm a console player.. Lucky enough to have gotten my hands on a PS5.
Note about the exclusivity: Given the team size (2 people + artists), developing for fewer platforms (especially just PC and XBox, which I guess are very similar to develop for) saves a lot of time. Especially if 1 of the skipped consoles is Switch (Switch ports can be quite hard by itself). Also Steam Deck is coming, so it'll be available on a mainstream-ish handheld device.
"mainstream-ish" lol Steam deck is not mainstream in the Portable console segment, Switch is. They made a bad choice by not releasing on PS and Switch both of which are market leaders in their respective segments (maybe not financially bad choice because who knows how much Xbox paid them) but definitely in terms of player engagement. It doesn't work out in the long term for the developers. Fewer people like your current game, fewer people will be excited for your future games.

@@chexmixkitty During the beginning of the ps4 generation, all they had was indies for the platform while their first party was busy in the shop. MS's old policy regarding indies during the 360 generation didn't help with their case on top of their XB1 fiasco. Those two factors made games media to jail Playstation as 'the home of quality indies.' Fast forward to these past 4 years, when PS's award winning first parties started to release in a regular cadence, Sony essentially tossed indies to the wayside. If you're not an indie dev of notoriety, you basically have no chance of being seen on the PS store. In fact, a couple weeks back, a bunch of indie devs were basically burning their bridges with Sony, saying they had to pay an exorbitant fee ($25,000) just to get placement on the front page of the PS store. One dev had a pie chart of their revenue splits where out of the top three console makers Sony was last (Nintendo and surprisingly Xbox were 1st and 2nd respectively.) The combat can get a bit more advanced once you have the hookshot, especially the upgraded hookshot. It pulls you toward enemies and you can attack while in the air as well. Granted you only get this ability quite far into the game but it's there.
Bought this immediately upon your recommendation, I love it. Slightly disagree with you regarding the combat - I think it's interesting with good options in the form of powers and can be pretty tough especially when you're swamped with enemies. Maybe I'm just a noob but I died countless times.
I just finished it and am extremely frustrated with his description of the combat. It seems he did not use any spells in combat whatsoever and did not know to get more by hitting enemies. I'm unsure how you manage to beat the game without realizing. Plus he didn't use the roll into heavy attack which is sorta a nitpick but I think should have been included when complaining about it
@@ultraprincesskenny6790 Yeah! You recharge magic by hitting enemies or even boxes/urns/mushrooms etc. When fighting harder enemies, it forces you to go in to hit them once in a while so you can recharge enough magic to attack them from afar using your powers. And, you can also upgrade each of your 4 powers if you find the right secret locations. For e.g. the flame power can be upgraded to burn your enemies for damage over time. The powers aren't all the same either. The bomb has AoE damage and consumes 2 mana. The hookshot is a quick way to pull yourself towards an enemy. Overall I think combat isn't as simplistic as he says it is. There's enough in it to have some strategy involved. Also depending on the stats that you upgrade, you can have different playstyles e.g. melee Vs ranged.
@@nicholasfoong3866 I remember near the top of the mountain, I had a lot of fun hookshot sliding on ice with the upgrade, you can hookshot and then hit the enemy a few times as you slide by.
Btw, Sony too has third party exclusivity deals, but I’ve never seen any people complaining about it(for example Final Fantasy VII remake). At least Microsoft releases games on PC too, so you’re not bound to buy an Xbox.
Yeah, both Sony & Microsoft have several indies that are timed-exclusives/forever-exclusives. I get his point about indies not needing to be exclusvies cuz they aren't necessarily system sellers... but both Sony & Microsoft still do it. Like, Sony straight up hoovered up many indie/AA's to be timed-exclusives for the start of this generation... like Bugsnax, Stray, Goodbye Volcano High, Little Devil Inside, Oddworld Soulstorm, Kena, Solar Ash, Praey to the Gods, the Pathless, Maquette, etc.
@@mitchellgoldstein1573 He's just a hypocrite, go watch his Pathless video, a PC and PS exclusive, no disclaimer there, it's clearly a "system seller", no need to avoid disappointment there, sony gamers can play.

He is probably only doing this for this game since its an unknown game and a lot of people might not know its exclusive since it was never advertised as exclusive. He probably wont do it for games like The Ascent
...Twisting his words a little, there. He's just making sure people don't find out at the _end_ of the review and become disappointed. It's a pretty sensible approach and the only reason I imagine he didn't do it for major flagship titles like Ghost Of Tsushima is because they had huge marketing campaigns that let you know EXACTLY what console the game was for. People didn't click on those videos to learn about some new underground gem, they wanted to know what he thought of the next big $90 dollar hit everyone was talking about. This is a tiny indie game made by two people, it's worth clarifying because not a lot of people would actually know going into his review. It didn't have anywhere near the same amount of money to spend on getting the word out there; I didn't know what platform it was for, let alone that it existed!
The grapple hook earned later in the game is what’s sealing it for me right now. Combat feels so incredibly quick and fun when fully mastered. Definitely scratches the itch Hyper Light Drifter left me when I finished that game.
Funny how people always complained about Xbox having no games and now you complain about this being an Xbox exclusive. On the other hand you didn't say a word about FF7 Remake being a Playstation exclusive despite FF has been on Xbox for years and the original ff7 is even playable on the Series X? This doesn't make sense to me
Respectfully, you didn’t understand his point. He was saying this title doesn’t offer Xbox much benefit as an exclusive. Exclusives are bad for gamers in general, but we have to accept them since platforms use them to sell their consoles. His point here was that Xbox likely won’t sell any consoles because of this game, so why make it exclusive? Maybe there is some vague argument that the overall number of exclusives will drive console sales, but it doesn’t really hold much water. FF7 Remake IS an example of a title that will sell consoles. Again, it sucks that Sony has exclusivity. It’s bad for gamers in general. But you can understand why they have made it exclusive.
@@maz4145 this is a weak take because Sony has funded plenty of lesser "non system sellers" and will continue to (kena) and yet no one "disclaims" anything on those games. He did this because he knows he has a very solid PS fanbase and they themselves know he's a bit of a Sony fanboy himself and therfore he was trying to heed their anger as they expect him being a Sony fan to have their back and see things from their perspective. I think the reason most people are less impressed by small, indie successes, is due to how accessible Unity and UE4 have become. Back when Dust an Elysian Tail came out in 2012 (where one guy did like 99% of the work, outside of music and voice acting), we were all blown away, since at that time, development tools weren't as advanced as they are now. Of course, this does not take anything away from the success of any indie team. It's just that now, it is more common to see a polished game that is made by just a handful of individuals. And that is great!

Sony on the other hand loves to come in to what's essentially a paid and finished game and "buy" timed access / content as just a bit of a power play. In those cases the devs/publishers likely require that since they just buying access they have to disclaim that it's coming elsewhere as they were already planning it to begin with.
I get what you mean about wanting more depth to the combat, though I've actually played games where the simplicity of the combat was one of their best features. The Ys titles from the early 2000s are good examples. The player basically gets a single-button combo and a small handful of minimally-useful spells. But those games deliver some really wonderfully unrelenting action, and the main reason why they do is because they don't make you waste time with special attacks and elemental weaknesses and other extra mechanics. The bosses especially stand out because you think more about learning their attacks and behavior than you do about managing your loadout. It makes for a great experience when it's done competently.
I heard someone compare the feeling of playing Death's Door to Link's Awakening. I can see that comparison (in a good way!) Link's awakening had a very simple combat system, but it served as a background to the story, characters, and atmosphere.
I find it interesting that this needed a 'this is an exclusive' disclaimer (which is fine, I don't mind that), but any of the good, lesser known Sony exclusives like Returnal didn't even get a mention. Are there a bunch of Sony fans that go out in force everytime an Xbox exclusive goes up?

This has been on my wishlist for a while now, glad it turned out as great as i hoped even if combat could be improved. The indie scene truly is where most gaming gems come from nowadays.
I recommend playing the game with the umbrella. It does the least amount of damage of all the melee weapons and promotes usage of ranged combat. In regards to your comment about “ammo” you actually gain ammo for your spells and bow for hitting enemies. Using the umbrella promotes using the weak umbrella not for damage but giving yourself charges for your ranged options.
It's exclusive because that's how business is, the only difference here is that we'll eventually get it on game pass and eventually PS4/5 and switch will probably get it. Can't say the same about Sony's second party exclusives deals that last years though. Lots of Sony exclusives were made and weren't system sellers and didn't serve a sales purpose. I don't really care too much about exclusivity because I like to own all 3 consoles, but every company does second party exclusives and players have been blocked before by Sony with similar games like Transistor and Pyre with supergiant games and well as many others that never saw the light if day on multiplat. I don't think it's fair to turn exclusivity being a weird move when every other company does it but never gets mentioned. The sooner we move on from targeting a single company for simply doing equally competitive business with the competition, the better it'll be for all of us.
But more often than not they're called timed exclusives with an actual period to them. Xbox calls a game exclusive, and then a couple of years in it turns out to be a timed exclusive. There's nothing wrong with exclusivity, it's part of the competition. What's wrong is calling timed exclusive games "exclusive".
@@Astralmess Yeah I agree, this is a new thing Sony has been clearly stating in their timed exclusives that they previously didn't do before. I also do agree that timed exclusives should generally be made clear for how long they'll last. That's something Xbox hasn't been very clear about. They usually say how long timed exclusivity will last in articles and interviews but it's not stamped on trailers or things like that. Games like The Medium and more recently Stalker 2 were mentioned to be 6 months and 3 months timed exclusives afaik. Generally though yes, the message needs to be clearer that it's a timed exclusive for this amount of time etc. With Death's door and indies in general, I believe there's usually a small chance that the devs don't have a specific time yet until they see when they're ready to release it on other platforms, but I can't say that applies to all indies.
Look man, I watch so many videos of yours about games I don’t know about or don’t care about just because I like your channel XD great content man! I hope you get some good ad revenue
Making the game a platform exclusive makes sense if you think of it as a way of punishing your competitor’s fan base for wrongthink in their choice of allegiance, an increasingly common tactic in a world of all or nothing thinking.
Perfect game for gabe deck. About exclusivity, just put available on xxx next time. No one will feel attacked that way. With how indie dev talk about how sony treat them last week, no wonder it not going to ps. Not sure about switch port.
This is an absolutely amazing game. The music is fantastic and the combat feels great. I happily did a 100% for this game and when it came to the umbrella achievement I even upgraded each of the abilities which was a nightmare, but it felt worth it
I'm sure I remember the player using the grappling hook to quickly close distance to enemies in the trailer, but I don't think I see that happening at all in this video. Maybe doing that to zip between enemies would have added that missing depth to the combat?
This game is so great. Really been enjoying it. And I saw you were comparing the game with journey? or Hades but tbh, its really similar to Hyper Light Drifter. The combat/exploration/story are similar. Not that is a bad thing, but just a fact.
Yep when xbox does this they are usually helping finance a game that wouldn't have gotten made otherwise they obviously want something for the money but they almost always allow or encourage the porting of those games elsewhere so devs can continue to make a profit off their work. Sony tends to just come in towards the end and pay a fee to have something locked down to their platform for a time and or give them exclusive content (see destiny and avengers Spiderman)
I don't think microsoft paid for exclusivity in this case. If they did they would've promoted this game. Only devolver was promoting this game. It's a ID@xbox programme game, so maybe devolver chose to release it on xbox only for the time being because of the ease of entry there and recently microsoft has been a good place for indies with or without game pass
There’s pretty much no evidence of no “ease of entry” on PlayStation. Would they be on the front page ? Probably not. Can they easily release on the store like the thousands of games out there ? Yea
Sony Dosent own persona or final fantasy do you ever use that disclamier for them. Hating that xbox got an exclusive in a review is uncalled for is the game good or not. This is the first and last I come to this channel just for hypocrisy. I have a switch and PS5 but if a reviewer can't be unbiased across the board then he has no credibility
Aww, you upset that he mentioned that it's an exclusive? You feel somehow threatened by this? Will you cry in to your bed sheets tonight? Maybe it's because people like you that he felt the need to include a note that this is an exclusive - timed or otherwise.
I’m not sure when this game was added to switch, but I just bought it on my switch during a sale and I’m really liking it so far. I’m glad this came to switch and PS. More people should experience this game and indies should have all the exposure they can possibly get
And the worst part is, you’re not even forced to buy an Xbox. Game doesn’t have high end graphics so pretty much any medium specs PC would run it pretty smoothly + they talk about how polished the game is but exclusivity is one of the reasons how they could polish this game so well.
I've noticed the same. Xbox got roasted for not having exclusives and there being no reason to buy an xbox. Now they are getting them and people cry even harder about unfair competition and destroying the gaming market. Console tribalism is a potent drug I guess.
Beating that “combat is lackluster” drum quite a bit here? I thought it was pretty good. There are a lot of environmental aids and obstacles that combine so well with the combat.
@@blade6965 guess I missed it. But after playing it myself. And watching other reviews, which give praise to the combat.. I can definitely say that his opinion on combat is misleading in my opinion. And although I support everyone's right to there opinion. This does kinda feel like console bias. Anyway thanks for the correction.
@@blade6965 I mean it's there but it's very misleading. It seems he did not know that spells recharge by landing melee hits and did not use any spells in combat at all
Describing combat by "running up, hitting, and then that's it" is missing the part where you hit them with spells as you run away and gain more when you hit them.
Why get so caught up on it being a console exclusive in the review? Have you considered the developer not being ready for switch yet because of how much optimization it would take to get it running well on what has become underpowered hardware?
yeah, i absolutely love buying (indie) games that have an edition inwhich the OSTs are made in Vinyl and are bundled in.. Celeste and Persona 5 Royal vinyl records are my favorite among my collection
As as game developer knowing that 2 people made this game, this is an amazing achievement. I love this game, and I love this review. The level design and the combat criticism is legit, but just remember... 2 people... I don't know how long it took to make this game but it is stunning what they accomplished. If they had an investor for making DD2, I feel that it would be something very special. Good luck to the devs
He would have been paid nicely for this review and living in Sydney is beyond expensive.
The fact that a 1 or 2 person team making something super impressive is now not even that uncommon anymore shows just how incredibly indie developers truly are
1 or 2 people making a game is still very impressive and special lol
*Some* Indie devs.
It's sucks that the conversation that companies like EA and Ubisoft suck is only prominent in the west, and still not what the majority thinks
actually it just prove just how pathetic AAA developers these days are

Yeah this makes it for me, its a nice weaving of abilities
@@metalmaster4686 I see you're a man of culture.
Combat is FUN. And I love the simplicity of it. It's smooth and I like how the bow charges with melee kills. I've been dying for a worthy successor to Hyper Light Drifter and even though the visual style is different, I'm getting heavy vibes from this one.
Lol not for skill up
I’m thinking he didn’t upgrade the spells. The upgraded spells, especially the hook change the combat up a lot and offer a lot more “expression” as he put it.
Yeah, he definitely didnt do more to upgrade the combat because finding the bosses to upgrade skills were incredible. He doesnt really discuss the hidden areas here.
i'm completely sold by the art style of this game ALONE.
As am I. Probably one of *extremely* few games that I have bought/will buy based on the art style.
“This looks so polished.”
This is actually what I said after seeing a gameplay video a few weeks back. Now, more impressed knowing it was created by TWO devs only. Kudos to the team.
Technically the website says thay partner with "talented designers from all over the world" so maybe they contract a lot of the work out. Honestly it's almost the only way a game like this can be built. Look at all the assets this game has.
Not that impressive when you find out thats just marketing BS. They had dozens of contracted artists working on all the art assets.

@@ramonandrajo6348 I was thinking the same thing, but it’s not running on SteamOS, though.
@@ramonandrajo6348 Not if it is published by MS, or is it not? I thought it was an exclusive.

Come on man, we’ve been starving for years.
The combat can get a bit more advanced once you have the hookshot, especially the upgraded hookshot.

I think your reviews are great but (like a lot of people) it feels like you're a bit biased in this regard; tbh I hate the exclusivity of games but if sony and nintendo rely on it then microsoft should really be encouraged to do the same.
Combat’s par for the course for an isometric game. It’s simple but satisfying. I would call it a net strength overall. I would have liked to see more weapon or spell variety or a charm system like what we have in Hollow Knight, but as far as being mostly locked into a style of gameplay goes, this one agrees with me.
Saw this on game pass. Wasn't sure about it. Downloaded it because I trust your recommendations about games more than any other channel. You and ACG are the real mvps

I really like your reviews. Even though I can't play this game I just listened for the great commentary.
Already bought the games, looks great. Now I have a doubt on your exclusive rant in final of the video: are you going to comment on how Kena is a PS exclusive and, as it is not going to move ps5 consoles, it is a bad practice or it is just true when it is an Xbox exclusive? Im going to wait...
exactly, he's a hypocrite!! xD
as I just commented in another thread, both Sony & Microsoft approach indie/AA developers for timed-exclusivity all the time. Its weird how Death's Door gets this attention though.
Look at these indie/AA's to be timed-exclusives for Sony... Bugsnax, Stray, Goodbye Volcano High, Little Devil Inside, Oddworld Soulstorm, Kena, Solar Ash, Praey to the Gods, the Pathless, Maquette, etc. Was it bad that these smaller games got exclusivity here too?
Let’s not mention it at all because fanboys get their E feelings hurt waaawaaawaaa

Bright memory
They have a newer version called bright memory infinite coming out to Xbox and pc sometime in the future don't know if this is from that or the original that's on steam now.
Another game made by like 1 dude.
Never complain when a game is a Switch exclusive though? I have access to one but personally I hate playing on the Switch so usually I get screwed over by Indies being exclusive on that. I’m happy one of these is coming to Xbox day one for a change instead of having to wait a year or so. Or never in worse case scenarios. Maybe that MS money might have helped make it so polished too? 90% of indie games are on your beloved Switch day one. Let the rest of us have it for once.
Hopefully when the Steam Deck is released it reduces some of this aggravating “perfect for Switch” talk which has been going on over the last few years.
Exactly, it will also probably come on Game Pass in 3-6 months and everybody will be able to enjoy it from anywhere on any type of devices.
I think it’s a perfect fit for the Xbox Series X in order to experience such a great game on a beautiful and large 4K TV at 60FPS.
I’m saying this as a Switch owner since March 3rd 2017, I just don’t get that logic, for once I’m happy that Devolver treated their Xbox customers in a special manner, which is even better if Microsoft helped publish, market and finance the title to be ported over and optimized for us.
Perfect for switch means perfect for playing on the go. Those are games that are usually played in short bursts. You don't need to say "your beloved switch" just because he is saying the truth

@@Noctury_Gaming I appreciate you having the nerve to actually say this. Because SkillUp acknowledged it, and I was thinking it, but I think all I said was like a passive aggressive, one-sentence Tweet or comment (not on this video). I've a PS4 Pro, I want a PS5, and wouldn't mind a Switch (or Steam Deck lol). Right now my *main platform* is the SERIES X. I love games in general, I have no Console or PC bias. The Series X|S have been getting flack from GAMERS more than critics or anyone else, when it really doesn't deserve it. I don't ask for people to say nice shit about Xbox, I just ask for bias to be removed from the equation. And if that is impossible, for it to be stated honestly. If SkillUp said it would have been great on the Switch, end of sentence, fine... but he went on to say it's "unfair that it's an Xbox Exclusive". Meanwhile, the Medium goes to PlayStation, and the only NEW X|S Exclusives (I'm going from memory, correct me if needed) that have any weight behind em, and launch _before_ FALL *2021,* are Psychonauts 2, MS Flight Sim, and like maybe The Ascent? The 2nd half of 2021 is DEFINITELY picking up in that regard for X|S Optimized Exclusives, but Psychonauts 2 might be TIMED, even though MS own Double Fine. The Medium seemed like it was only 6 months of X|S Exclusivity, and I was under the impression MS acquired Bloober Team, so... WTF? So just bc Xbox acquired Bethesda and a bunch of Devs, doesn't mean everyone on the planet isn't buying PS5s & Nintendo games RN. I'm not RICH, so if RUclipsrs of widespread influence (and therefore sales, etc) didn't reduce XBOX's worth as a Brand to some bottom of the Console Hierarchy trash, it'd make me feel like my $500 Fridge PC isn't in danger of losing support from Pubs, Devs and Gamers... ending up on a "WHA HAPPUN?" video in 4 years. PS3 was in that position, and look where Sony is now. GameCube was a joke in terms of relative unit sales, look where Nintendo are now. I love games, & hate seeing SO much DRAMA in ALL areas of life; Games aren't POLITICS, they're fcukin "NERD" ESCAPISM, RIGHT?! Wasn't that the idea? Aren't we all enjoying the same hobby? Your anger should be going toward BOBBY KOTICK and whatever the FCUK he's doing! (I missed out on this scandal and can't find info)
This and Tunic came out around the same time. Tunic was absolutely a breath of fresh air. I'm playing Death's Door now and while it's good, it's just not as imaginative as Tunic.
Great review! I disagree about the combat criticisms, I found that I didn't typically use the melee weapons, and focused on hookshotting around and using ranged attacks. Most of my slashes were the result of the upgrade hookshot dash slice thing. I really loved it, and was honestly surprised that it was listed as a let-down
Great review 👍🏽 Just finished DD (on Game Pass!) and absolutely loved it. Would be awesome to get a sequel with a deeper battle system, though I did still very much enjoy this one
You are a good man, thank you. I just needed the "i recomend" title (pre orderd at the first trailer).
That little exclusive advisory thing you did at the begining, don't remember seeing that before. Is that something new you're going to do for now on, when it applies?
I think so
@@SkillUp I posted this before getting to the part at 12:11 where your talking about being bummed out it's an Xbox exclusive and Playstation and Switch players won't be getting it. Which, hey I get wishing more people can play a good game, but don't Sony and Nintendo have 3rd party exclusives like this all the time? Look at Kena, next month. Only coming to Playstation. I don't remember hearing much flack for them in cases like this. Or am I just misremembering
@@trav_9830 you just exposed his hypocrisy
@@trav_9830 I believe Kena is a timed exclusive. One of the devs said so on twitter.
@@knownguide9425 as will this be in the long run
. Difference is xbox likley financed this game significantly if not in full and has more control over wording of the exclusive part of the deal is likley that they don't mention it coming to other platforms whatsoever for say like a year maybe longer but they'll likley have been working on having it on other consoles just as soon as they legally can.
Sony on the other hand loves to come in to what's essentially a paid and finished game and "buy" timed access / content as just a bit of a power play. In those cases the devs/publishers likely require that since they just buying access they have to disclaim that it's coming elsewhere as they were already planning it to begin with.
Can't wait to play this on the Steam Deck
Skill Up you are one of the best game critics on RUclips hands down.
Yeah honestly I prefer simple and elegant combat systems that just feel great to extensive and elaborate ones.
Plus he didn't mention spells in combat, which recharge by 1 every time you hit an enemy. They do a few different things.
Frictionless is a great term. You kind of just glide through this game always moving forward. That said it isn’t terribly hard but it has moments.
I heard someone compare the feeling of playing Death's Door to Link's Awakening. I can see that comparison (in a good way!) Link's awakening had a very simple combat system, but it served as a background to the story, characters, and atmosphere.
0:53 hey what game is this? it super interesting, kind of like a FPS darksouls
Bright Memory - is on steam
Can we agree the avarice theme slaps. I also like how it limited your ranged options as so you can't be a wimp against more physically based enemies.
He probably put that up BECAUSE of Returnal being an exclusive to Playstation, so must of felt the need to include it here. But regardless if he adds the disclaimer or not - people will never be happy.
Personally, Skillup is a damn good reviewer and like to hear what he has to say. He is honest about what he does which not very many reputable sites and or channels are.
Lesser known titles and you bring Returnal as an example. lol
@@Astralmess Your point it? It's a AA game, if it weren't a PS launch title it would probably be considered Indie. It hasn't sold anywhere near other PS5 exclusives, and it's a pretty niche genre. Most people hadn't even heard of the game till it released, or weren't considering on buying it if they had heard of it till they watched a review.
It's a bigger game than Deaths Door, and it's a good game, but it sure wasn't well known. It also barely had any marketing leading up to launch.
@@dobbear he made the disclaimer be cause he's a bit of a Sony fanboy himself and knows a significant portion of his audience is too and sees him as "one of them".
He's protecting his "postion" even if it's not one he consciously takes he's certainly made it clear with previous remarks, and this action itself, that it's true.
In case this influences anyone's purchasing decision because it may influence mine... This is made by the same company that made Titan Souls which included Andrew Gleeson. Andrew was the one in the past who publically said something to the effect that he was glad TB was dying from colon cancer after TB said he wouldn't like Titan Souls since he didn't like boss rush games. Now I don't know yet if Andrew Gleeson was involved in this game as well but for people who care about it you may want to check before purchasing.
Makes sense since Sony treats the indie studios like shit
Just got it for the Switch
Thanks for the honest reviews, this is the MAIN driver for me to follow your stuff.
I happily did a 100% for this game and when it came to the umbrella achievement I even upgraded each of the abilities which was a nightmare, but it felt worth it
This reminds me of a 3D Hyper Light Drifter and I loved that game. Maybe I'll give this a shot.
What's the game or games shown after bright memory? Around the 1:01 to 1:05 mark?
The simple combat reminds me of Hollow Knight. No frills but solid
Hollow Knight combat gets really complex at the end game. Especially the optional content.
@@noctisaeterna3296 So, the first 8-10 hours of Death’s Door is like the first 8-10 hours of Hollow Knight? :)
More like hyper light drifter imo
It looks like HK has a more complex combat altogether.
If anyone is hesitant on this game, i highly, Highly, HIGHLY recommend playing Hyper Light Drifter
This would be great on the go with the Steam Deck.
Cuphead was once an Xbox & PC exclusive, then it found its way onto Switch and PS4; I think we’ll see the same for this game as well in due time.
Yea
@@yeppumm1192 yeah I think main gripe indies has with playstation is with discoverability

More people should experience this game and indies should have all the exposure they can possibly get
Nobody cry's when the other systems get exclusives. Always when Xbox gets it. Always.
Pretty much. When you taught yourself as being x and y but then do z, people tend to get pissed off by it.
And the worst part is, you’re not even forced to buy an Xbox. Game doesn’t have high end graphics so pretty much any medium specs PC would run it pretty smoothly + they talk about how polished the game is but exclusivity is one of the reasons how they could polish this game so well.
*cries
I've noticed the same. Xbox got roasted for not having exclusives and there being no reason to buy an xbox. Now they are getting them and people cry even harder about unfair competition and destroying the gaming market. Console tribalism is a potent drug I guess.
Yea man because the other systems exclusives are far superior.

I don't do this often, but I'm going to buy this on Steam right now. This game looks like something special.
Why get so caught up on it being a console exclusive in the review? Have you considered the developer not being ready for switch yet because of how much optimization it would take to get it running well on what has become underpowered hardware?
It’s releasing on PS4/5 and surprisingly Nintendo Switch on November 23.

This game has some of the best music I've heard in quite a long while.
I've noticed that a lot these indie titles live and die by their sound tracks.

The soundtrack is what made Hollow Knight so unique and intriguing.
As as game developer knowing that 2 people made this game, this is an amazing achievement. I love this game, and I love this review. The level design and the combat criticism is legit, but just remember... 2 people... I don't know how long it took to make this game but it is stunning what they accomplished.
