As a longtime fan of Banjo-Kazooie, this game is everything I expected it to be. I wasn't expecting some revolutionary 3D platformer. I wasn't expecting an action-packed game. I don't think it's supposed to be either of those things. Banjo-Kazooie was neither of those things. Yooka-Laylee, in my opinion, is exactly what they marketed it as: a platformer rare-vival. It's a callback to the days of 3D platformers on the PS1, Dreamcast, and N64. It does that incredibly well and I love it for it.
All i wanted was a dose of nostalgia from my early n64 days and it certainly 100% delivers in that aspect. Do not buy it if you are looking for new and innovative gameplay like most gamers look for in every single game they buy today. All I wanted to do was explore some new worlds and collect some shit.
"Explore new worlds and Collect some shit". Ditto my friend...I know exactly what you mean. I spend more time collecting shit and in cuddling Gear and Collectables in my menus than playing half the time! I still haven't even finished half of Fallout 4 because I can't stop collecting everything and taking it home to dump and scrap. It drives my wife apeshit when she watches me play sometimes. 🤣🤘
It seems like alot of ppl who have played this game were not even born when banjo, mario64, donkey Kong, toowie were released originally . They. Have delivered what they promised a modern day version of those type of platformers we all loved in the 90s. People hype themselves up way to much and expect far to much.
I call it the "Brawl Syndrome". People expect too much from a game, that is good, but since its not what they wanted they say its "bad". (Brawl Syndrome because of Super Smash Bros. Brawl)
I believe the energy meter purposefully prevents us from using the roll ability all the time because they don't want a repeat of the talon trot. To be fair though, by default, Yooka moves insanely fast compared to Banjo, so a talon trot isn't nearly as necessary.
Hesusio nailed it so perfectly on the head. I wish HE was the one reviewing this game. I haven't even played it or Banjo-Kazooie and I know exactly what he's talking about. I'm not generally picky when it comes to games, but I DO know how people beg for changes in games they don't want changes in. Want solid evidence of me and Hesusio's claim? The success of the Call of Duty franchise every year, and why 2D Mario is ALWAYS one of the best selling games on every Nintendo platform. Everyone THINKS they want change, but they don't. Although, there IS a line where you should change at least a couple things, but you should make them and call them as "additions", and do it right. Borderlands TPS was bad because the execution of the additions to the Borderlands game was not that good. If the additions of TPS were put into BL2 instead, it would've been MUCH better.
I love the positive style of the Before You Buy series, it is so nice and soothing to watch and listen to someone not losing their mind and just happily discussing games :)
SomeguycalledSmithy I was beeing as optimistic as possible when I got into the game, and so far so good...I'm having a really good time with it! No bad at all for a $40 brand new title
I had a feeling it would under perform, but when you think about it... isn't that why we love the old 3D platforms? Because of how simple and well thought out the gameplay itself was? The old Rare games never had a big grand story to them.
Being a crazed Banjo-Kazooie fanatic, I can respectfully say this game was very enjoyable. I just can't wait until the speedruns start coming out. Because I'm diving right into that.
Door_Productions Yeaaaah no, Mighty Number 9 was a big middle finger of lies to everybody with backed it; this is just a middle finger to Jontron fans whiteknighting for him.
Nah, I played it (maybe you should), plays like banjo, sounds like banjo and feels like banjo. So they delivered, please don't compare this to mighty 9, you're just making yourself look foolish
@Door_Productions - Except Yooka-Laylee actually released on time, and looks just like the images they showed during the Kickstarter (a major advantage to showing real gameplay footage and not just concept art). Characters can even move their mouths during cutscenes!
I just started my Lets Play of Yooka-Laylee and I freaking love it. Got so many negative reviews when it frist came out, but all the updates and patches have really helped it out.
I don't now if you still come back to these older videos to see comments but I just wanted to say thanks for reviewing this game. I just got back into gaming after a multi-year hiatus and really appreciate your older content.
In my opinion, the only reason that Yooka-Laylee was given a low rating was because of the difference in the market itself. Platformers are nearly non-existent anymore. The gaming community has entirely changed since the Banjo days. As someone who grew up playing these platformers, this game definitely delivers. It sought to capture all the traits of a Banjo game, and in my opinion, it absolutely succeeded. It gives the player all the great (and not so great) experiences of playing a true platformer.
I am a nineties kid I love playing platformer games like this like Banjo Kazooie Ratchet & Clank in Crash Bandicoot I look forward to being able to play this one
As someone who has never played a banjo game I am absolutely loving this game. I haven't been able to play a game where I could just sit back and relax while playing it, while that game also still challenging me. While yes the camera sometimes has issues the rest of the time it's fine and isn't nearly as bad as you made it out to be (and you didn't even make it out to be that bad) This game was exactly what I expected it to be, if not better and it also makes me feel like I missed out a lot by not playing banjo when I was younger. I have played Jak though which this games controls reminds me of a lot.
first cancel the wii u port ( the wii u one was the most wanted because a new colectathon in a Nintendo console) and now not making a physical copy for the switch
Spoonicide Form your own opinion on this one. I went in with some fair expectations and I'm having a wonderful time. It seems like people's biggest criticism is that it's too much like the games that inspired it, but that's exactly what was promised. I don't get the fucking problem.
i played this on Game Pass this year and completed it 100% all achievements on xbox. I fucking loved it. It might as well could have been an OG Rare game. It was perfect and exactly what I wanted. Now I want a sequel.
I'm about halfway through with 100 percenting it and it's one of the best games I've ever played. The critics are largely getting this one so wrong. And there's nothing wrong with the camera at all if you grew up playing these kinds of games and still do. This was made for the Rare fans who grew up in the 90's and never stopped replaying Rare games year after year.
I am a long time fan of the series and these are the pros and cons that I had with the game. Cons: There are no warp pads in the game which makes traveling annoying. Warp pads were in banjo tooie to help make traveling in the worlds easier. The warppads also help you get a sense of progression b/c discovering a new warp pad means you found a new area. Trowzes does heal you when you go to him, bottles/ jamjars heal you when you talk to them. In banjo kazooie/tooie you can only learn one move from bottles/jamjars at a time. They would be in multiple locations in the map and each location gave you a different move. In yooka layee you can learn numerous moves from trowzes at one time in one location. The problem with this is that you may not know what move to learn since there is a selection. The other problem is that you may not know why or how the move works. What made bk and bt good in this regard is that the area you learned the move needed it. For example in bt grip grab is taught to you by a ledge and you can derive that you need the move for the ledge. This is not a factor in yooka layee. The mini games are bad, generic and unrelated to the world. In banjo tooie the mini games with fun, creative and organic. For example in witchy world the mini games are theme park theme. They also are found organically while exploring in yooka layee you need to go to one section each time. Also the arcade sounds similar to klungo’s arcade from nuts and bolts and any inspiration from that game is a huge no no. Too many hoop challenges, in bt and bk there was more variety in the challenges. No split up option. There are no pads in the game like in bt and bk. You enter the worlds the same each time it is always by going into a book. In bt and bk there was some variety. Also the outside area of the world was much better in bt and bk it gave you a really good feeling of what to expect here is not too great. The worlds are not connected like they were in banjo tooie. Pros: The game is well designed and graphically nice to look at. The platforming elements are great. The different abilities that you get by eating different things are well done. It’s cool that you can two different types of abilities at one time. The worlds are large and vast and there is ton of stuff to do. The game does not hold your hand; the user needs to figure things out by playing. The mine car challenges are fun but sometimes can be annoying. This game is exactly as advertised a throwback to the old 90’s platformers and a spiritual successor to banjo kazooie. To be fair it is really a throwback to banjo tooie since it is more like that game than yooka layee. The game overall is fun to play and the concept of having to learn new moves in later levels to get pages in earlier levels is used here. This game is just like the force awakens it was made just to prove that the company can create a good platformer that we all remember. If a new games comes out it will be able to be different and innovate and make a better game.
Alonzo_ gtfo Yeah, basically I have played Banjo-Kazooie and Tooie and they are fun, aside from Rusty Bucket Bay in 1 and Grunty Industries in 2, but I digress. If you get the Rare Replay for like $30, you get a ton of games including the Banjo-Kazooie games (at least 1 and 2 if you have good taste) and try it. If you end up loving both than Yooka-Laylee is pretty much kind of the same way.
Alonzo_ gtfo Oh trust me, I've done it myself and let's say I like leading by example. Plus you get like Perfect Dark, Battletoads, Jet Force Gemini and so much more, like I said for 30 bucks.
I was hoping that the camera wasn't as big of a problem as people have said it was but I was sadly wrong as what you said is true. Though after playing for about 4 or 5 hours I am really enjoying the tongue and cheek humor and gameplay of it all. Just a fun sit down and enjoy kind of games.
sometimes I feel like the only one who doesn't care about the whole jontron thing because Yooka-Laylee is a good game regardless of what the developers think :v
I was a backer, who looking back wished I had backed with more, and I really like this game so far. I really feel that this is the revival of 90s 3D platformers we were promised, and the spiritual successor to Banjo we were hoping for. Also, I don't get peoples issues with camera.
The game itself imo is pretty good but the camera just like you said sometimes gets annoying. As a backer i don't regret backing this project, i feel it is bang for my buck. One that I don't understand however is how can so many people did not buy the game just because jon tron got kicked off the game, all his parts were just mumbling a few sound. Also I'm pretty impressed for what they've done considering their budget. Maybe 2 mil sounds a lot but if you compare it to other games budgets, you'll see that 2 mil goes fast
being old enough to have played some of the games that inspired this. i think it looks good. the quiz thing was something shown in the video that i did not have interest in. other then that it looks like it's worth checking out. thanks for sharing.
I am about 3 hours in and don't see the complaints people are having with it. I mean the camera may get stuck once in awhile if I am against a wall but everything else about the game seems to be on point and I am enjoying it.
Been following since day one of kickstarter, haven't played any banjo kazooie game but love Super Mario 64 and recently played a little of DK64, 4 hours into Yooka Laylee and I'm loving it, it's not perfect but charming and fun.
I'm very pleased how this game turned out. It's everything I wanted it to be. I didn't want a modern 3D banjo... I wanted banjo with modern graphics only and this is exactly what I backed. Camera can be bad but if you know how these games work it won't be a problem because its quite predictable. 5 worlds is kinda sad and I wish it had quill doors since i've unlocked all the moves yet i have like 300 quills left over and i've barely touched the 4th and 5th worlds... but other than that this game is exactly what i wanted it to be a modern looking banjo game.
playing platforming games on the nintendo 64. i was so stoked when i heard about the kickstarter for this game. like banjo and donkey kong had a birth baby. Ive been following it since KS and since its release. i would of love to be a backer but at the time i didnt have the funds i REALLY wanted to give them.(more than a dollar or two). I was so excited to see the same load menu and the pause/start button screen and viewing totals. I LOVE the little voices when they speak, you dont get that a lot. Its nostalgic and its cozy, i know what im doing and im familiar with the setup i love...so going back to nostalgia in this game was amazing for me. Im still working on it. The worlds are really big..and really confusing and i am running everywhere but its still really fun. I love collecting items and spending them because it makes you work for new moves to progress easier in the next world. There is A LOT of quills though and pagies. Im always missing almost half of both when i leave the world. No clue where they are. There are tough mini games that are really hard but despite it i like having to work for pagies. I run around on walls and areas i thought are "cheating" or "Game breaking" because you can pretty much get on anything and often i find quills..So the developers know gamers are going to scale EVERYTHING. Which searching for items makes it harder. In all i love the jokes in the game, they speak more than i thought which is good.I feel like there could be more personality but i dont know what. The puns are good. Im a fan of bad puns and make them myself. Very british language which is funny to me. Honestly bad guys and characters along with transformations they are all very well done and imaginative. I think its a great game and i give it a 9/10. Im very happy with the game. I hope they make more and learn from peoples' reviews on this game.
I feel it's hugely a victim of overhype, it's a pretty amazing 3D platformer and very commendable to the people who didn't give up on the genre. Banjo Kazooie/Tooie were simple collectathons much like this and having played both as a kid, I don't see the difference, apart from maybe some people being butthurt they couldn't use the bear and bird copyrighted characters. Honestly what were people expecting to get? Cus this is exactly like a Rare platformer (and is). Gamers are very entitled these days and aren't satisfied with anything, relatively fun but not mindblowing games are put on the same level as absolute garbage games.
Okay I didn’t grow up with Banjo Kazooie. BUT when I managed to play it at one of my dads friends houses, I fell in love. I love several games. I grew up starting with late ps1 games. And chased all the way today. When I heard they were going to remaster Spyro, I was so excited. I had never played them before. But I didn’t expect a storyline as in depth as Detroit Become Human. I Expected a fun and simple game. And that’s what I got. Now I know that I found this games name (Thanks to a video on Funhaus) I’m gonna enjoy this game!
Man I was a huge fan of 3d platformers as a kid, and some of my favourite games to this day are the sly cooper franchise, rayman franchise, (the 3d ones not origins and legends although those are good too) sonic heroes, jak and daxter, crash bandicoot, etc. I just feel like this game is missing the charm that those games had. I feel like what games like sly cooper and rayman did so well was capture a sense of adventure and fantasy that really made them special. I have such fond memories of just being so excited to explore new worlds and immerse myself in the fantasies of a brand new universe. In my opinion a lot of games today don't capture that same charm, and rather than creating an adventure they just create some fancy graphics and action and call it good. Of course there are a few exceptions such as Undertale, but the vast majority of games just feel bland to me. It's really a shame that this game didn't live up to the hype, but I definitely want to see some other developers try to revive the 3d platformer genre. There's just something about a good 3d platformer that is special, I don't know I just miss my childhood tbh lel.
Yeah, the camera in Super Mario 64 works for the most part, but its rather tedious to operate at times. And yet people act like Super Mario 64's camera aged quite well, which I find ironic since I felt camera in Sonic Adventure was much better, even though everyone else says the camera in Sonic Adventure is dog dung. I'm mean, the camera in Sonic Adventure certainly isn't perfect, the camera will flat out stop following in certain moments of Final Egg and gets real buggy in Big the Cat's version of Ice Cap, but overall I feel it is better. And before someone accuses me of being a Sonic fanboy, I grew up with Super Mario 64, I was only introduced to Sonic Adventure a mere two years ago. Although to be fair, Sonic Adventure and Super Mario 64 are different types of platformers, so perhaps the comparison isn't completely fair. Still, other 3D collecthon platformers like Donkey Kong 64, Banjo-Kazooie and Banjo-Tootie had far superior cameras to Super Mario 64. If Yooka-Laylee has a better camera than Super Mario 64, then people should cut the game some slack.
I don't miss weeding through all the half ass and totally NOT biased game reviewers at all. You are the pinnacle of gaming quality control and quality gaming reviews. Thank you for working so hard to keep up with all these titles brother! 🤘🖤
after all the reviews, I think I found yours one of the most professional. Not hating on the game, because that's what's popular, but also stating the flaws. As you did with mass of effect Andromeda. I will happily subscribe to you and look forward to future content!
In my opinion, nostalgia fans should really watch their wallets closer :P. As much as I liked banjo kazooie as a kid, I know it is a kid's game and the fun you'll have with it won't be the same as a grown up. Same goes for crush bandicoot, it definitely is a game for kids that you won't really have much fun as a grown up adult playing video games. I don't see the need of making games like that again, they'll probably sale ok-ish because of the nostalgia but will be remembered as games that "didn't capture its roots".
So far, I like it generally. I'm not that far but I think I can give somewhat a first impressions type of feedback. The game feels just like the old 3D platformers, but slower. I've not see anyone talk too much about this except this video about the story/dialogue. There's way more in this game than in the games it's paying homage to. And that's it's weak point. I feel like classics like Banjo-Kazooie nailed it with just the right amount of dialogue and game play. This game seems more conversation heavy and in a game like this, you don't really need that much exposition. That said, it certainly feels right at home with the music and game play. Hell even the visuals seem to scream "Banjo-Kazooie-esk" which is exactly what we signed up for right? I think the game is gonna be a ton of fun and I'm looking forward to playing many hours on it.
Wow, Jon is one of my favourite RUclipsrs, but many of you guys are acting extremely immature. It was a voice clip, and chances are it would just as annoying as the rest. I understand that what Playtonic did was wrong and unjust, but honestly, grow up. From what I've been told, many classic Banjo and Kazooi fans who have played this game enjoyed quite a lot.
Well, I loved Banjo Kazzoie, Donkey Kong 64, Mario 64, etc. Those games made my childhood. When I was little the technical difficulties weren't a problem, I played to have fun. And that I have. I see lots of people bashing this game because "the camera is buggy", or that "this doesn't feel fresh". I am ok with that. I want to buy this game and have the most fun I can have. It has passed almost 20 years since the nintendo64 era, I am more picky, but hell, the game looks like fun like you said guys "apple pie". Oh and people who won't play because Jon Tron. Really? Nothing against the guy, but he is just a person. Have fun with the games please.
You don't realize how fucking excited I was for this game. If anyone has this game, can you please tell me if it's worth it because I really want it and was so hyped for it but it's been getting terrible reviews everywhere :(
I feel a lot of these terrible reviews are just the vacuum wave from the hype train roaring through. It happens with every game i end up liking. It gets hyped and praised by gamers as "the game to change [INSERT GAME GENRE] forever!" but it ends up being guess what another game with usually at best incremental innovations because if something is too different then gamers bitch as well. All that aside, this game is a fun 3d platformer with controls similar to the late 90s early 2000s platformers, but in my opinion refined, it can be thought of as a spiritual successor to Banjo Kazooie. The characters are cute and i feel overall, memorable. The sound and music change with the environment and I found myself humming them at work today. If you like british humor on the more childish side then this will sit well with you. I like the graphics. They feel defined and vibrant. My only issue was with some particle effects such as fire. I experienced no framerate drops yet on my OG ps4, although i just cleaned it so it went from sounding like it was going to fly around my room to purring like a kitten. Some of the negativity may be coming from the fact they removed Jontron's voice from the game. Do I agree with their decision and how they conducted themselves? No. Do I understand as a business why they would move in that direction? yes. Do I think it ruins the game? No. If you like what i described then it is worth the price.
Jackson Parham He's on point with everything. It's not a revolutionary game: it plays a lot on that 90-00's nostalgia. But it's a pretty good game at that.
for me, banjo kazooie was the first game I ever played on Nintendo 64. I was blown away and owned both it, and banjo tooie. for me, this is a must buy. just found out about the game last night and I am waiting for gamestop to open in 45 minutes so I can buy it.
If you were only planning on buying it in the first place because of JonTron then you are not the intended audience. It was made as a spiritual successor of games like Banjo Kazooie and Donkey Kong 64. It was intended for those who enjoed those games and wished to revel in the nostalgia. Its a game. Lets take it for what it is and denounce the political connotation that this supposed scandal has been attributed to the game.
It's not really about JonTron; not him specifically. I'm still frustrated about that, but more of my focus comes from the imo poor business decisions about removing him from the game. It's not about what he did, but the idea that they would completely remove someone from the game, make fun of him on twitter, and lock any threads talking about him. No matter what someone says all you should do is remove them from the game. That's it. No shittalk on twitter, no instigating for a comeback so they can get defensive, just remove him from the game, and get it over with.
Hmmm... How immature. Im not caught up to well on these events. Jontrons pretty cool but Im not gonna let this contoversy get in the way of me enjoying what this game is. I've been waiting for this since it was first announced. Thank you for your intelligent input.
Ch0ft I'm pretty confident that's how any company backed by corporations would've reacted upon such controversies. Maybe if JonTron supporters weren't overreacting, Playtonic wouldn't have done such damage control.
+PC Master Race Actually no, that's not how most companies do business because pissing all over a fanbase and then locking threads is a terrible movie - especially when the game isn't that good. So a lost sale from me for a shady company. All they needed to do was to remove JonTron and then leave it alone but they decided to piss on their customers.... well bad move!
Michael Jepsen Yeah. My issue wasn't that they removed him from the game; Jon decided to make himself a political figure; politicizing a non-political product is bad for business. However, instead of removing themselves from the politics, they actually doubled down and propped up some psuedo-political nonsense that essentially espoused themselves as "diverse" and "inclusive" and not racist (unlike that horrible racist, Jon /s). They then mock him on Twitter, and disparaged and locked down all discussion about the topic. That's why people think they are shit, because they decided to act like immature twats rather than, y'know, a professional business.
I liked Jax and Daxter cause i fell in love with the characters and like the gameplay, i liked Crash Bandicoot cause i thought it was funny and i fell in love with the characters, and i like the gameplay, same with Banjo, Spyro and all those, i dont think ill like this cause i dont think ill care about that lizard at all, maybe its the dull design or kinda bad name but either way it looks boring... Thanks for playing it, and getting this and all these reviews out so fast!
Hi, I've grown playing n64 titles, it was my first console, and from me this game has a high nostalgia attached to it. I'll try to keep my opinions unbiased. I've played a couple of hours in the PS4 version and bottom line it delivers what I expected. The camera it's a bit wigly but I've played worse. The level design is great but are enormous and lack content for it's size. The duo is as fun as I remember. The sarcastic humor, the fourth wall breaking, the insane story and quests keep me amused most of the time. The controls are responsive and thight, for the part I played. I've also heard some issues with the XBone performance and in my PS4 it is stelar. No visible framerate drops and very few hickups so far, even in the zones the XBone falls apart. My main reason to support this game was not to revitalize a series. Its was to put the ones that did it back on the map. Its not with a budget like this or the timeline they had that they could pull it off. But if this can spaw a new IP with a AAA investment I would be very happy.
You know, a lot of peoples expected that game to usher in a new age of collectaton by bringing something new to the table in this domain. The truth is, it did open the door to more collectaton (Since this came out, the genre seems to be coming back bit by bit) in the end, even if the disappointment toward this game was just some peoples expecting something a little more groundbreaking.
3:21 wow, even the dialog boxes, font, and character speaking in the right corner is exactly the same as the Banjo games. Looks like a solid platformer though!
Joshua Miguel not to step on your toes, but his voice would've been a 1 second sound clip being repeated abillion times for probably 1 sidequest and five lines of dialogue.
After hearing some reviews I don't have much interest in buying this for PS4, but honestly I still would love to buy it on the Switch. I guess even an average console platformer is way better on the go. Too bad it look like there is no release date for that version, I would imagine there will be plenty of other people that would also prefer that version so I wonder if that will effect sales much?
I find it hard to trust any game reviewer who has negative things to say about a games' camera system when they all waxed lyrical about Shadow of Colossus. To this day that still has the worst camera implementation of any game i've played, just as horrendous in the remake and destroys any fun to be had with it.
he still is well respected by alot of people; it's just now there is an ample amount of minor controversy about were rare in the right or wrong for kicking JonTron out of the game for him expressing his opinion on the podcast.
oh wow, so people are hating this game because it has/had Jon Tron...are these people insane? Can't they separate fiction from reality? They are not related.
@Blaze Rom Alot of the backers for the game were fans of JohnTron and when they heard the news that John was stripped from the game people wanted refunds, which the devs denied (this made lots of people mad). So it's not solely because of John's removal. IMO: I think what happened to John was a bit unfair.
banjo kazooie was and is my favorite video game of all time. yooka laylee was a pretty good game it did bring me back to my child hood when I would play banjokazooie. yooka laylee reminded me enough of banjo kazooie but it was also its own thing which I like, if I could change one thing about the game is that I would make it longer, it felt really short. hopefully they make yooka laylee 2
snake pass is fun, but pretty limited in what you do. slither and collect coins, as well as blue orbs. that's about it. the puzzling climbing mechanic is incredibly fun and challenging but there's just not a lot to it.
As someone who doesn't play these types of games often I am actually happy it wasn't a disaster. It's a nice break from your "modern triple A games" plus another good thing is that it was an actual finished product that was shipped to the people and not needing these reoccurring day one patches. Another plus is the fact that you can expand the worlds by just playing the game and it's not locked behind a devils creation of a season pass. I hope they can do a second or different game and hit it on the mark 100%.
Those far-right people are funny. What would be your next hashtag? #HitlerDidNothingWrong? #ApartheidWasNotWrong? #PedophilesAreNotWrong? #SlaveryIsNotWrong?
+Vinegar Doppio. Nothing, I just live in a country where 60% of the people are black or mixed race and I felt very bad about those racist comments. People I care for, people who work, people who never insulted anyone. That's why I respect Playtonic Games and feel sick about racist comments.
Legendary Hero no. A lot of people who backed it are fans of banjo and Kazooie. I don't even think JonTron was announced as a voice actor during the backing period
A lot of people who backed the game were Jontron fans. That's not to say they backed the game because Jon was in the game, most didn't even know he would have a part in it. But their sucking of SJW dick just so they can spit the acidic virtue signaling back into our faces is outright offensive.
+Jose Cabrera He was announced as being in the game a full year before the kickstarter showed up and Jontron advertised the shit out of that kick starter
I loved this game mostly because I've just wanted a new Banjo-Kazooie platformer for about 16 years, and that's what I feel I got with this game. It might have some performance issues, but honestly this game was a fan service. It was meant to give fans a 90s platforming experience. I think Playtonic has a lot more experiences up their sleeves. Not just with future games, but with this game. I bet the DLC will vastly improve this game.
I saw this on the ps4 store not knowing literally anything about it while it was on preorder for like $60 and i just fucking laughed Dark souls 3? Uncharted 4? Knack 3 Extended Edition? NAH YOOKA LAYLEE N I G AAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yeah. People have preferences. :P I get the joke but some people have literally waited 17 years for this to happen, haha! Plus it's 30/50 bucks, depending if you get just the game or also the digital soundtrack and art book.
Platformers are always good fun, I don't think that the genre needs a "comeback" since is not dead, it just gave already too many of itself, just like FPS these days, people are still looking for something new but you can't go beyond that, just accept it as it is
Weird that you mention the camera issue. I saw that there was a day one patch that 'fixes' these camera issues that people were having problems with. However, when I was playing yesterday I didn't notice a single camera issue. Granted I am a veteran Banjo player, so perhaps I'm just ultra use to it.
I'm not sure what a lot of people expected, pretty much knew it was going to be a new Banjo Kazooie. Definitely didn't expect anything revolutionary. I pretty much agree though, the camera is, by far, the worst part. I did get used to it after about an hour, but it can definitely be an issue sometimes.
Skuntac if you like banjo kazooie or just any platformer at all then buy it. $40 is worth it and once you really get into it it's really fun. There's always more to explore and find
I am having a ton of fun playing this with my brother, sure the worlds can be a bit barren, the camera will occasionally not be on your side, and the characters could have had a bit more variety/personality, but the game is FUN. It has flaws but it's nothing that will ruin your experience if you love platformers.
Too many negative opinions about this game. For a kickstarter game, Yooka-Laylee was fine. They promissed us a 3D plataform game with colorful and sweet characters and lots collectible items, they gave us that. Why people still unsatisfied? It's because people overexpectated this game, the problem is their expectancy, not the game on its own.
it's an old washed out 3d platform with nothing new to offer. If you expect something new and innovating your out of luck but if your looking for some nostalgia it delivers I guess
christian maldonado i feel like thats the main sweet spot they tried to deliver most on, Its just something game companies arent that good at. Kinda like the term *if it aint broke dont fix it*
More developers should do that. Give what they promised and not make so many outlandish claims such as new things and redefines that might not be what people expect.
This got us thinking about more videos...what was your favorite 3D platformer?
gameranx I feel very early

gameranx I'm not sure...
gameranx Crash Bandicoot
As a longtime fan of Banjo-Kazooie, this game is everything I expected it to be. I wasn't expecting some revolutionary 3D platformer. I wasn't expecting an action-packed game. I don't think it's supposed to be either of those things. Banjo-Kazooie was neither of those things. Yooka-Laylee, in my opinion, is exactly what they marketed it as: a platformer rare-vival. It's a callback to the days of 3D platformers on the PS1, Dreamcast, and N64. It does that incredibly well and I love it for it.
I'm in the same shoes, it only seems right to play this on a Nintendo system so glad to hear from another long time banjo kazooie fan
As a longtime fan of Banjo-Kazooie, I am very disappointed, this game does nothing as good as kazooie or tooie
Totally agree, I think just the same.
Definitely does not deserve all the hate it gets. I've been enjoying this game
100% agree. This game has all the nostalgia and Rare vibes but yet it's a modern game. It 100% delivered. It's great.
Brawl)
Brawl was pretty bad though.
Competitively, yes. Casually, It's a good game.
I love how much Gameranx interacts with the subscribers, especially in the

Haha soo true
How do you only have 26 likes in 3 years?
Yeah but is it as good as Knack?
Random Name What kind of nonsense is that? Nothing can come close to Knack's greatness.
King dedede Humblede3 Knack 2 is the only game that has surpassed knack.
but Knack 3 tho. thats the one
poor peasants
Random Name yes
I've been playing it for approximately 10 hours, and the game is really fun! Totally recommend it
PH CLANK did you go in with an optimistic look on things, or were just hoping it wouldn't be bad.
SomeguycalledSmithy I was beeing as optimistic as possible when I got into the game, and so far so good...I'm having a really good time with it! No bad at all for a $40 brand new title
SomeguycalledSmithy it be best if you pirate it tbh it shouldn't be worth more than 20 bucks
how is the coop campaign? cant find any information about it :(
888nivek Considering it's not 60 bucks either I'd say it's a decently priced game.
The gameplay looks like a lot of fun. I might buy it to play it with my childhood buddy.
I'm just glad this didn't end up like another mighty no.9 !
From the sound of it, it kinda did.
Well 9 is unplayable, this is decent
You know what game they need a reboot of, Gex , Enter the gecko, could be awesome,
jp Shankle omfg yes
Omg I grew up with gecko.
yeah but with a dragon, where you can spit fire and burn sheep and... wait, never mind
While yes the camera sometimes has issues the rest of the time it's fine and isn't nearly as bad as you made it out to be (and you didn't even make it out to be that bad)
This game was exactly what I expected it to be, if not better and it also makes me feel like I missed out a lot by not playing banjo when I was younger. I have played Jak though which this games controls reminds me of a lot.
Why do people care about jontron getting removed. He himself doesn't even care that much.
I love platformers like these, I'm glad they still make them!
I'm just over here waiting for a physical copy for switch.
same
Which will never happen..
first cancel the wii u port ( the wii u one was the most wanted because a new colectathon in a Nintendo console) and now not making a physical copy for the switch
Very Smol Gunner Nozomi Yup, it's digital only.
The digital version isn't even out yet lol
TBH to me it's been so refreshing playing this type of game again to me this is a must buy for anyone that grew up playing the N64
dunkey already gave me the review I needed
he's so good
Spoonicide ladies and gentlemen, Joey Bonzo!
Spoonicide Form your own opinion on this one. I went in with some fair expectations and I'm having a wonderful time. It seems like people's biggest criticism is that it's too much like the games that inspired it, but that's exactly what was promised. I don't get the fucking problem.
gameranx you are awesome for liking him keep up the great content
FreakinSweet1987 I never really planned on getting it in the first place since I'm putting all my free time into persona 5 and I'm broke.
i played this on Game Pass this year and completed it 100% all achievements on xbox. I fucking loved it. It might as well could have been an OG Rare game. It was perfect and exactly what I wanted. Now I want a sequel.
You really loved that Trouser snake, didn't you Jake?
Paulo Tauren It's THE most memorable charcter in the game.
5 hours in and LOVING this game so far, not even a big banjo fan
Yooka-Laylee Rap hit me right in the nostalgoa and now I have to play this xD
love how he compared pagies to stars in super mario 64 rather than, oh i dont know, jiggies?
I thought the exact same thing when I was watching the vid xD!
I don't know why but I'm going to buy this game👀
Alonzo_ gtfo good you'll love it
Alonzo_ gtfo Yeah, basically I have played Banjo-Kazooie and Tooie and they are fun, aside from Rusty Bucket Bay in 1 and Grunty Industries in 2, but I digress. If you get the Rare Replay for like $30, you get a ton of games including the Banjo-Kazooie games (at least 1 and 2 if you have good taste) and try it.
If you end up loving both than Yooka-Laylee is pretty much kind of the same way.
Alonzo_ gtfo you'll be addicted
m3tr0id86 thanks for the advice I'll try that
Alonzo_ gtfo Oh trust me, I've done it myself and let's say I like leading by example. Plus you get like Perfect Dark, Battletoads, Jet Force Gemini and so much more, like I said for 30 bucks.
I didnt want a revolutionary platformer! I wanted Banjo Kazooie and im happy because its basically that.
"Trowzers Worldwide Incredible Traders"
*TWIT*
This is why I love Rarew- err I mean Playtonic.
They probably stole the idea from "Trotter's Independent Traders", if they're English developers.
"The collectibles are pagies, basically stars."
WHY NOT SAY THEY'RE JIGGYS. WHY.
Im 14. I never played in the glory age of platformers but i really enjoy them, i exited to play this. End comment.
Been following since day one of kickstarter, haven't played any banjo kazooie game but love Super Mario 64 and recently played a little of DK64, 4 hours into Yooka Laylee and I'm loving it, it's not perfect but charming and fun.
Gameranx- what is one of your favorite pairs of characters or a one of your favorite duos in video games? From a twin
Kane and Lynch lol
gameranx hey ima the other twin
🤣
gameranx always pictured the guys at gameranxs as a jack and Dexter type of group?
Kane and lynch= legend 27
I'm very pleased how this game turned out. It's everything I wanted it to be. I didn't want a modern 3D banjo... I wanted banjo with modern graphics only and this is exactly what I backed. Camera can be bad but if you know how these games work it won't be a problem because its quite predictable. 5 worlds is kinda sad and I wish it had quill doors since i've unlocked all the moves yet i have like 300 quills left over and i've barely touched the 4th and 5th worlds... but other than that this game is exactly what i wanted it to be a modern looking banjo game.
one of my friends worked on this game I think it looks pretty cool
playing platforming games on the nintendo 64. i was so stoked when i heard about the kickstarter for this game. like banjo and donkey kong had a birth baby.
I'm just happy that kids have a fun runaround game to the caliber we did back in the day
I would rather have a new banjo kazooie that is like the originals
I loved the old Rare games and this was my first kickstarter game ... after 2 years its finnaly done :D
Game looks ok for nostalgia's sake but nothing to call home about.
Okay
I didn’t grow up with Banjo Kazooie.
This game coming to the switch at all? That would be the only version I get.
Yes it is coming. On a later date but it is.
Let's hope that version is more polished.
Knightmayor it will be. platonic is working with nintendo very closely on the switch version
Nah, Mario's 3D platformers' cameras have rarely given me any problems.
Super Mario 64's camera is not as good as people claimed it is, I'd take the camera in Sonic Adventure over it.
Have you played Mario 64 at all recently
Thomas Ruth Well, I wouldn't go THAT far, but I agree with what you're saying.
The camera is fixed in 3D world, so not a fair comparison.
Old 3d platformers had camera issues but they didn't have dual analog stick controllers back then.
who remembers Croc on ps1
Keith Todorov what about sheep raider?
Croc is the best
I don't miss weeding through all the half ass and totally NOT biased game reviewers at all. You are the pinnacle of gaming quality control and quality gaming reviews. Thank you for working so hard to keep up with all these titles brother! 🤘🖤
This game's medium.
Not well done, not exactly rare.
Disclosure: haven't played the game.
Edit: I'm considering its purchase when the physical copy is available for Switch. Seems like a cute game.

after all the reviews, I think I found yours one of the most professional.
It doesn't do anything special and the camera is a bit god awful, but it's good
Lower the camera sensitivity and it improves the camera a great deal
Matty F Its a good game, good not great, if you want numbers its 7/10 for me, if you're a fan of banjo its basically Banjo threeie
for me, banjo kazooie was the first game I ever played on Nintendo 64.
+PC Master Race
Actually no, that's not how most companies do business because pissing all over a fanbase and then locking threads is a terrible movie - especially when the game isn't that good. So a lost sale from me for a shady company. All they needed to do was to remove JonTron and then leave it alone but they decided to piss on their customers.... well bad move!
Michael Jepsen
Yeah.
I mean people got what they asked for...
Hi,
I've grown playing n64 titles, it was my first console, and from me this game has a high nostalgia attached to it.
Who's here because it's free on epic games?
You know, a lot of peoples expected that game to usher in a new age of collectaton by bringing something new to the table in this domain. The truth is, it did open the door to more collectaton (Since this came out, the genre seems to be coming back bit by bit) in the end, even if the disappointment toward this game was just some peoples expecting something a little more groundbreaking.
Looks like a very simple game for very simple people.
It's so simple I can shave my girlfriends crotch and still play
... Wait you what?
Sorry, Mr. Sophisticated. We, poor and simple people, play games just for fun and are praised with the simple side of life.
Solid Mike calm down Mr. I suck on COD balls every year
Solid Mike tfw you're condescending
3:21 wow, even the dialog boxes, font, and character speaking in the right corner is exactly the same as the Banjo games. Looks like a solid platformer though!
Oh boy! Can't wait to see Jon tron in this INCULSIVE Game!
I have never grown up playing this type of open world adventure games but this looks like something I would be interested in!
Can't wait to hear Johns voice in the game...... oh wait :/
There's probably a hack for that.
Joshua Miguel he might still be in there, if you ignore the inevitable day 1 patch....
Joshua Miguel not to step on your toes, but his voice would've been a 1 second sound clip being repeated abillion times for probably 1 sidequest and five lines of dialogue.
Joshua Miguel who cares lol
Joshua Miguel I'm very curious myself. I would someone to piss off these game developers.
You talked pretty highly of a game that's only 40% on the moist meter...
I find it hard to trust any game reviewer who has negative things to say about a games' camera system when they all waxed lyrical about Shadow of Colossus. To this day that still has the worst camera implementation of any game i've played, just as horrendous in the remake and destroys any fun to be had with it.
Who the fuck is JonTron (I'm not trolling)
he still is well respected by alot of people; it's just now there is an ample amount of minor controversy about were rare in the right or wrong for kicking JonTron out of the game for him expressing his opinion on the podcast.
oh wow, so people are hating this game because it has/had Jon Tron...are these people insane? Can't they separate fiction from reality? They are not related.
Joe Hernandez RUclipsr/comedian
Ch0ft to be fair, what he said was pretty racist but an opinion nonetheless
Before You Buy:
Check out Snake Pass.
Buy that.
Don't buy this.
Nah, I'm buying Yooka-Laylee.
So true
I tried Snake Pass and it just wasn't my cup of tea this was more up my alley.
People saying Snake Pass is a 3D platformer: Yes it is 3D, yes it looks rarish, but if you control a snake wriggling around YOU ARE NOT PLATFORMING.
snake pass is fun, but pretty limited in what you do. slither and collect coins, as well as blue orbs. that's about it. the puzzling climbing mechanic is incredibly fun and challenging but there's just not a lot to it.
#JontronDidNothingWrong
Those far-right people are funny. What would be your next hashtag? #HitlerDidNothingWrong? #ApartheidWasNotWrong? #PedophilesAreNotWrong? #SlaveryIsNotWrong?
+Mr.Zero Except JonTron voted for Obama twice and supported Bernie Sanders. Something tells me that you're a sheep.
+Vinegar Doppio. Nothing, I just live in a country where 60% of the people are black or mixed race and I felt very bad about those racist comments. People I care for, people who work, people who never insulted anyone. That's why I respect Playtonic Games and feel sick about racist comments.
Voting for Obama, being immigrant or having black friends are not wild cards for uttering hate speech. People will feel offended the same way.
#Noonebutjontronfuckboysgiveashit
3D platformers were so simple and awesome. God I love them. Let's make more games like that
I just realized, people who "hate" the game are JonTron fans. Lmao 😂😂
Jose Cabrera because most of the kick starters are Jontron fans.
I like JonTron, and I'm buying this game, full price if I have to.
+Jose Cabrera
He was announced as being in the game a full year before the kickstarter showed up and Jontron advertised the shit out of that kick starter
I saw this on the ps4 store not knowing literally anything about it while it was on preorder for like $60 and i just fucking laughed
Dark souls 3?
Uncharted 4?
Knack 3 Extended Edition?
NAH
YOOKA LAYLEE N I G AAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It's $40...
Yeah. People have preferences. :P I get the joke but some people have literally waited 17 years for this to happen, haha! Plus it's 30/50 bucks, depending if you get just the game or also the digital soundtrack and art book.
It was never 60$ you fucking mongoloid.
Nate M Bru 😂😂😂 i love that word anyways i pretty sure i saw it for 60 as a preorder or something but i might be wrong
It's 60 for an Australian, but that's not full price over here. 90 is full price usually
Platformers are always good fun, I don't think that the genre needs a "comeback" since is not dead, it just gave already too many of itself, just like FPS these days, people are still looking for something new but you can't go beyond that, just accept it as it is
I would rather get dragged off a plane than buy this game.
Edgy
too soon
Max Catanzaro united
Max Catanzaro Careful what you ask for.
Max Catanzaro
He need some milk the poor father
Weird that you mention the camera issue. I saw that there was a day one patch that 'fixes' these camera issues that people were having problems with. However, when I was playing yesterday I didn't notice a single camera issue. Granted I am a veteran Banjo player, so perhaps I'm just ultra use to it.
i love how jontron's fanboys is making him lose fans
I'm not sure what a lot of people expected, pretty much knew it was going to be a new Banjo Kazooie. Definitely didn't expect anything revolutionary. I pretty much agree though, the camera is, by far, the worst part. I did get used to it after about an hour, but it can definitely be an issue sometimes.
Before you buy, don't buy
CptTibbles k, I'll buy
Why don't buy? Serious question
0/10 not enough JonTron
Too many negative opinions about this game. For a kickstarter game, Yooka-Laylee was fine. They promissed us a 3D plataform game with colorful and sweet characters and lots collectible items, they gave us that. Why people still unsatisfied?
It's because people overexpectated this game, the problem is their expectancy, not the game on its own.
it's an old washed out 3d platform with nothing new to offer. If you expect something new and innovating your out of luck but if your looking for some nostalgia it delivers I guess
The game was marketed as a return to classic 3D collecthon platformer, it delivered what it promised.
christian maldonado i feel like thats the main sweet spot they tried to deliver most on, Its just something game companies arent that good at. Kinda like the term *if it aint broke dont fix it*
More developers should do that. Give what they promised and not make so many outlandish claims such as new things and redefines that might not be what people expect.
christian maldonado I have a feeling you dont like to have fun...
Katzlund the game looks incredibly boring and stale plus I didn't grow up with banjo so the game isn't marketed towards me
