Wow! great tutorial. I think I can do a Y seam now. I used to choose a different pattern if the one I wanted to do had a Y seam but you make it seem so easy and possible. Thanks for your teaching videos Edyta.
I love how you break everything down into simple steps, one step at a time. You make it look so easy. Also love your tricks to make it manageable. The star is lovely. Back when I started to quilt, an 8 pointed star was sewn by hand and then appliqued on to the square. Hence, why I only made one, count them 1 8-pointed star in my life. Now I am ready to make a dozen. Thank you, Edyta. Love you. 🥰🧵🪡❤
This was a great tutorial! Thanks so much for sharing all your knowledge and experience with us! Now I can tackle y-seam and diamond shapes! Thanks so much!
BEAU-TI-FUL! As ALWAYS!!! Lovely fabric, creative techniques and SATISFYING result. DEFINITELY going to do this. GREAT way to challenge your quilting skills. THANK YOU for you talent. 💓
Best tutorial for Y seams… thank you for sharing your talent. I have learned so much by viewing tutorials but not everyone is good at it so thank you again. 🍀🍀
Best tutorial ever! I have struggled with Y seams forever. I have passed on so many beautiful quilt patterns that called for Y seams. I am amazed how easy you make it and the results are amazing. Your Star of Bethlehem pattern my next quilt to sew. Thank you.
Excellent tutorial! Love this quilt behind you. I have been quilting for a little over a year now and have seen so many of your quilts wearing Best In Show ribbons. This is why. 😀
Thank you Edyta you’re an excellent teacher, after quilting for years and struggling on the machine with “Y” seams you’ve shown it’s so easy - the transition from traditional paper piecing to machine piecing is just “one step at a time” thank you for sharing your knowledge so we can pass it on to the next generation of quilters 🪡
Here's some math for figuring the components for your finished block in different sizes. Your head will not explode. The outside edge of your block is composed of 2 squares and a triangle that is the measurement of the diagonal of your square. X + X + 1.414 X (the diagonal of the square) = 3.414. Basically algebra that we all know and love and expressed in terms of the square or X. SQUARE Calculation: The size of your square finished is your finished block (FB) divided by 3.414 or FB/3.414 Your cut size is that calculation + .5" seam allowance. Yes, it is that easy. QST Square: The QST is the size of the square multiplied by 1.414 or X * 1.414. To that add seam allowance of 1.25" and cut on the diagonals. Yes, it is that easy. Diamond: The diamond occupies a space of two (as there are two diamonds) across the middle of your block. To calculate your diamond you must do the following: Take your finished block (FB) size and divide by 2: FB/2 AND subtract from that the FB/3.414 (which is the size of your square). Add .5" seam allowance. FB/2 - FB/3.414 OR FB/2 less the _finished_ size of your square + .5" seam allowance. (Not so easy). Given that the math has to be rounded up to the nearest 8th, there may be calculations that have that 8th distributed among different elements (e.g. square v. diamond v. QST). Accordingly, you should make a test block. If you have Electric Quilter software, it will give you dimensions. I did all of the math prior to having EQ8, and there were just a handful of block sizes where there was an 8th of an inch redistributed. I don't know if it would affect the outcome. However, to check your math, the _finished_ size of each piece MUST equal the the size of the finished block. So check those, and add the appropriate seam allowances noted above. You should NOT be an 8th of an inch out at all on those measurements.
Thank you so much for your very easy to follow tutorial. I've always avoided Y seams but you make it look so much easier than I thought it would be. I think I can see some stars in my future! Thanks again!
Edyta you are a genius, I made my first block but it was a disaster. I tried again and took a little more time and care with my cutting and it came out PERFECT. Thanks again for such a detailed and wonderful instruction. Y seams are no challenge to me anymore ❤🎉😊
Edyta, I followed your video from some years ago at fat quarter shop. That video and this are two of the best videos on the net for construction of this beautiful block. You are right that practice makes perfect. Rather perfect practice makes perfect. I had some breast cancer fabric that I used to make stars with red fabric. I made a beautiful quilt to gift to someone battling cancer. Did all my stars make it? No. Some were pitiful and misshapen beyond hope and salvage. Did I have moments where I thought I could not achieve even marginal results? Yes. But every fail I got better, and I had your charming voice in my head. It was fun to see this updated version, and your tip on the ruler square is great. There is so much bias in these blocks that despite best of care/handling some "stuff" happens. However I know that muscle memory needs development. You have to put the work/practice in. (for those with perfect results out the gate.. I'm jealous). I will note that I had better luck slightly oversizing the insets. However you have to work from corners out. Find construction methods that work and make sense for you. Edyta's videos are the best for helping mere mortals. I can say that my stars are perfect--now--I devoted an entire weekend to getting there. And your teachings invaluable. Your square up tip essential. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. For any struggling.. keep at it. My tossed stars were learning fodder. All that practice imprints every aspect of the construction..so you will instantly know if you are off the mark ONCE you've done the toil and trouble. (Best not to have wine and sewing when accomplishing).
Thank-you for the video. I will watch it again I'm sure. I agree with the other reviews, very well done and so helpful. I will continue to follow your channel.
Ďakujem vám veľmi pekne za perfektné a cenné rady 👍 ste skvelá určite sa budem držať vášho postupu a všetko bude dokonalé 😉 chýbali mi praktické skúsenosti a potom som sa trápila ako to doladiť 😀 vaše videá sú pre mňa neoceniteľné 😘 pozdravujem zo Slovenska 🇸🇰 a prajem veľa tvorivých nápadov a zdravíčka 😀
In watching this I couldn’t understand why you did not take the papers off your templates. Now I know. The other day I dropped one on my carpet and it was hard to see😂. The paper on would have made finding it easy. Great video, love your work
I have tried and tried to get my star to line up at center and cannot. I have watched video after video over and over. I am so discouraged, going to move on.
you need a close-up shot when you’re putting in the pin at 19:26 and anytime you’re pointing to an actual pinpointed specific area. Don’t Point with your finger. Use a stiletto so we can see exactly where you are pointing. Close up shots up will transform your videos.
Thank you, I love your demonstrations and your kindness as you are demonstrating.
This has to be THE best demonstration of assembling an eight point star. So good, thank-you!!
I’m excited to try your method as i did 6 stars another way and all are not right. Thank you thank you!
Well I can’t wait to try another - I have failed on previous stars points - so excited to try again - Thank you
Hello @electasmith1486. Yes, keep trying. We are excited for you too!
What a great tutorial...that is the most impressive and easiest explanation of how to do a "Y" seam that I think I've ever seen. Thank you!
This video tutorial for the 8 point star is the best I have seen! You explain everything very well!

Polly from down under
Thank you so much for this!! I just might try some y seams today
Excellent tips
Beautiful
My very fist quilt was 2 big 8 point stars. Made after watching your tutorial on FQS.
I am going to try your technique for matching star halves.
In watching this I couldn’t understand why you did not take the papers off your templates. Now I know. The other day I dropped one on my carpet and it was hard to see😂. The paper on would have made finding it easy. Great video, love your work
😍
Thank you!!
I love you
I am in!
Thankyou I have just finished one following your tutorial. Turned out near perfect. What patterns can I use my new found knowledge with.
thanks
Do you have a demonstration for the Alaska 8 point star?
Thank you for the amazing tutorial. Where can I purchase the templates?
what are the sizes for a 8" finished block and 10" finished block? I love the technique, but I need alternate sizes.
Here are some examples that might be useful.
8" block: 2 7/8 square QST 4.5 Square cut on 2 diagonals Diamonds 2 1/8
10" Block: 3 3/8 squares QST 5 3/8 Square cut on 2 diagonals Diamonds 2.5
12" Block: 4 squares QST 6.25 Square cut on 2 diagonals Diamonds 3
Thanks so much, will try these out.
I would like to buy the templates, I don’t see a link?
Can you show how to make this block an 8 inch block?
My triangles keep ending up to small. I am not sure where my measurements are off. Going to order templates and retry in a few weeks.
What do you mean by I don't want to shine the points when pressing?
What if I wanted to make a half star? Is it the same process?
Can you use the new Alaska ruler to cut these out and not the templates? I understand we loose the 1/4” marking.
Is it possible to mark all the dots before the pieces are sewn together?
wouw
I have tried and tried to get my star to line up at center and cannot. I have watched video after video over and over. I am so discouraged, going to move on.
There’s no way we can see the overlap of the two colors of thread because the camera is too far away.
It is a whole lot easier to make this with half square triangles. Just saying
