I have no idea why this month-old video ended up in my feed, but so happy I found this! I have trouble matching fabrics, too, and love making scrap quilts, so this video will get rewatched over and over again!
Fantastic video! Cannot thank you enough for sharing this one. There r many videos talking about scrap quilts, piece sizes, colours, but the way this video addresses all these together, there r not many to reach there. Loved loved the organisational charts n branching diagrams in between. Those conveyed the principles so well!
Oooohhh! a New Quilter! Some suggestions for YT Quilting Videos include: Karen Brown of Just Get it Done Quilts... Kristen at I See Stars Quilting, Opinionated Quilter, Sew the Distance, The Sewing Channel, Mississouri Quilt Co., Donna with Jordan Fabrics, and SewVeryEasy.
I love the idea of a huband bin. Sadly mine passed away 25 years ago. He was a great artist. I live with my 43 year old son. He has been my go to when in doubt of colors. So I will call my bin the man bin I think. Or the Corey Bin.
I've quilted for a long time. Not as great as many. I am intimidated by scrap quilting. At 71 years of age I have more scraps than I like to admit. I think you have shown me an old dog, can learn new tricks. Thank you.
You are not alone Carolyn! Most of us are drowning in beautiful scraps. This approach is excellent and I love Judy's colour sorting/organizing tips. I have really searched for fun and easy scrap busting methods...most are tiresome and boring...and Judy's work as does the Terry Rowland approach (which is my tv watching activity) ruclips.net/video/2UQE5SlOLqg/видео.html
Great and informative teaching on the color wheel. Art was my favorite subject in school. What is interesting is Judy’s is geared analytical and her presentations are relatable to the mathematical world. She is great at using color theory. I personally do have a great eye for colors and have never relied on the color wheel. However I see how handy it is for lining up the shades and depths of colors of ones in question as the a color falls with in it’s respective color on the color wheel. Because of her analytical brain she has figured out a great method for how we can use 3 sizes of blocks to create numerous quilts with the original cut sizes. Judy what a great presentation! Sooooooo informative how colors with no matter the print can be used in quilts as long as we al line those colors with in the perspective color with in the color wheel. Thank You, Kathy Myers Bess Admin for ‘Conquering Mount Scrapmore with Brenda’
Bravo! I so appreciate your communication skills in sharing colour theories and methods. It breaks my heart when I see a fabulous technical quilt that dies because of the colour usage. You are sharing critical knowledge that will inspire beautiful quilting.
the 'Husband scraps' quilt, neutral blocks being pieced also balances the weight of the quilt as well as the texture, which helps when you quilt it. 👏🏻
I love your process. This is a fantastic video quilting lesson. I've been quilting for over 55 years and I think this is best scrap quilting lesson I have seen - and I've looked hard!!! :) With your blue quilt, you asked what we would do. I love blues and yellows together, so that is what I would probably do. :)
I think over my 30 years of quilting….im speechless, your ideas really make sense to me!❤ Im forever thankful, and im going to buy all your books, patterns I can get my hands on!💝
A color wheel is great, but I really love the Ultimate 3-in-1 Color Tool. It based on the same scientific principles as a color wheel, but goes even further. It's an amazing tool for quilters, knitters, and more. Looking forward to getting a copy of the Judy's latest book.
What I’ve come to realise is that there are quilters who create a set of rules for themselves and work within those rules. In this case, the size of the squares, the specific colour schemes ie adjacent and pieced “calm” areas. It’s taken me a while to work out what they are actually doing, because their method is presented as a method that’s already developed understanding how and why it works dosnt always make itself clear. And now I can work out a set of rules (that can be fluid! 😂) that works for me!
I am a beginner quilter, loved all the info I have gathered from you. Your quilts are amazing. I loved all the different patterns. Your personality is awesome. I loved the Husband Bucket!
This was very interesting and informative. I’ve always had trouble with the color wheel, I understand complimentary, but when it came to shades and tints I was lost. I happy to say, after watching this lady, I’m understanding it a little more clearly.
This is invaluable information on color theory. Thank you! I would appreciate information on where I can purchase the same color wheel Judy is using. Thank you!!
Great presentation Judy, thanks! And I LOVE your citrus earrings...do you have a source for them? FWIW a fave quilt shop owner told me the hardest colours to find at the suppliers' shows are yellow and purple. I always search a new shop for those colours first as they are so rarely printed.
I am so inspired by your methods! Thank you for sharing your passion and knowledge. One question - when making the cut for the hexagon, is there a specific measurement or angle (i.e. 1" in from the upper left hand corner or a 45% angle)?
It’s called a rotary cutter, and you’ll need a self healing cutting mat to cut the fabric with the rotary cutter. The clear rulers are available at quilt shops too and come in a variety of shapes and sizes.
You talk way to much. Have you ever heard Charlie Brown, after 5 minutes all you can here is Wan wan wan wan which is really too bad because there is a lot a good information. Just saying.
I am there to present a one hour lecture. That is what is expected. If I talked for less than that, the audience would not get their money's worth, because they paid to be there, and public television would not be able to produce something so short. Thanks for your commentary.

What a fabulous video. As a new quilter, I already feel eons ahead of where I was yesterday, thank you!

@@DH-qz2so as another new quilter, thank you for the suggestions!!
I’ve been quilting for about 5 years… relatively new and welcome aboard!

I'm new to quilting and only have Dallas cowboys and bees scraps so far. I did bees with back. The bees were very bright
Great presentation Judy, thanks! And I LOVE your citrus earrings...do you have a source for them? FWIW a fave quilt shop owner told me the hardest colours to find at the suppliers' shows are yellow and purple. I always search a new shop for those colours first as they are so rarely printed.
my earrings are from a University of Wisconsin book store. They're meant to mimick the chairs in the student union.
Very informative.
I enjoyed and learned so much. I'm looking forward to seeing more from you. BTW where can I get a color wheel like the one in the show?
C&T Publishing

I am so inspired by your methods! Thank you for sharing your passion and knowledge. One question - when making the cut for the hexagon, is there a specific measurement or angle (i.e. 1" in from the upper left hand corner or a 45% angle)?

You can go to an art supply store or you could probably get it off of Amazon. Or even local quilt shop might sell them.
