Terrific colour theory... with practical application
Wow... I have been quilting for 24 years...never thought about this whole color theory area, of quilting! ... maybe I do some of this intuitively, but not with all this thinking behind it of why!!! This is jam packed full of information... would need to watch it multiple times for it to all sink in!
Wow. Now here is a tutorial full of info. I was on my toes the whole time. I love that Judy talks to us, like adults, not a kindergarten class!!!

Thank you for this video! I ONLY sew scrap quilts. I collect sheets and retired clothing. I sometimes go to thrift stores or bargain stores and buy heavily-reduced curtains, pillowcases, table cloths, table runners, even shower curtains and I remake them into all kinds of scrappy things including skirts and aprons. I love to scrap because it is thrifty and makes me feel connected to the early Americans who did such beautiful quilts with what they had. I use my smaller scraps for English paper piecing (love it) to make quilts and quilted placemats, table runners, pillow covers, and a host of other items. Very little goes in the trash. I even repurpose the elastic in the sheets and I use the casing for the elastic to tie up my plants in the garden. I can purchase a new sheet at a bargain store for as little as $1.00 and because friends know that I do this, they often give me their leftovers and so I get some really nice sheets and old clothes and bits of other things to make scraps. Your video is very helpful in how to think about organizing pieces because I often get thrown by some of the things you were talking about in this video. I do have a color wheel from college and I never really thought of using it for quilting but I certainly will from now on. Thank you again!
Bayou, love your suggestions, all my grandmas quilts were made with old clothes, I cherish them! Buying new fabric can become very expensive!
I'm so glad you commented here. I've been collecting sheets, draperies, old cotton clothing, etc. for quilts. I wish there were more videos for people who reuse things like that. I'm sure with the wider fabric (king-sized sheet for example) There are probably other things we could do besides use them as backing or cut up for square. This video is excellent! Thank you so much for sharing your expertise! The color wheel you use is the best one I have ever seen. I love the amount of color that is shown by the outward solid circles. So funny. When I'm not sure I do ask my husband to look at it and you're right he makes a determination rather quickly. LOL LOL LOL. Like I'm sitting here laughing because I can't even believe you said that. Omg! The husband bin. I'm going to have to relabel mine. I use clear plastic shoe box size for all my scraps. I also use them for all my other Fabrics that are eventually going to be used together. Several yards folded into these little boxes and I have hundreds of them LOL. Sometimes I like to be able to mix things up a bit for a scrappier look so it works great. I don't even bother working with different sizes though. If it's a scrap. I decide what I want to do when I open the box. Crumb pieces are a whole other story. Those tiny pieces just get mixed together and it doesn't matter what color they are. I can't believe how organized those shoe boxes have gotten me. I got very sick for the last couple of years so it was wonderful having them in those boxes and not all my fabric on shelves. Kept the dust off and I'm so happy to be sewing again.

I like your phrase "fabulously alive with color". Was fun to see how some quilts we saw the color first and some the pattern.
So, you don't limit where you poke under the fabric to just the seams. You can poke through at any place, right?
Really great video on color. What happens when you have smaller size scraps? I have some 1 in or 1 1/2 in wide and 8 in or less. Do I just make string quilts and use the same method with color?
I have 1x9 strips I cut to make rag wreaths, and wish I hadn't. I would like to know the same thing!

I LOVE the electronics motifs on the light colored fabric. Where on earth did you find it? Do you have the name of it and who made it?? I have many ham friends, most of whom are men. They could appreciate a gift using such a fabric .
I would call the black pok a dot with the bright hearts....multicolored....that is what my online eyeglass store calls most of my favorite glasses.
I guess what you call adjacent colors is what I call tone one tone or tonal.
Your orange/brown top I would simply call FALL.
WOW. I know my monitor is not the greatest, but the majority of the colors that you said were in the green/blue family did in no way look like either color.
I love the treasure box(?). The bright yellow with red dots and yellow with red stars grabbed my eyes immediately and I was able to follow what you had on the top better.

Are we third-graders with pointed scissors or adults I can take care of ourselves. I’ve been doing this 25 years and always leave my blade open. Somehow I’m still alive. Great video

Wasnt this an excellent video? There is always a risk with something razor sharp. I would use my small spinning mat to turn. I see many videos where women cut around a block without moving it. I am sure that is not for me. An experienced quilter friend required immediate hand surgery from rotary cutting fabric quickly on the way to a quilt guild meeting. I slightly cut the part of my hand between thumb and forefinger with scissors as I was holding what I was cutting. So some of us that are less focused daydreamers have increased risk and know we can't do that. I wouldn't put it past me to drop an open blade on my foot or something.
Hilarious that she made those generalizations about men. There is no difference between how men and women see color.
I believe she was referring to the tendency of making a quick decision about which color it is.

i was shocked at your incredibly sexist "ask a man" and "husband bin" comments. Most sewing lecturers seem ignorant to the fact that there are men who sew and that there may be men in the audience (or they just don't care)
