@@MrHarrisRYC Adding to the above, the showcasing of the notations of a tune bolsters an artistes command over the notations, that they can identify each and every sound and it's deliberate versus random singing. Earlier it was considered unnecessary, termed as "exposing the bones", i.e. an unnecessary dissection because singers went thru an extremely rigorous training which left no scope for doubt and therefore a need to 'prove' anything. Maestros rarely performed for the layman and only for connoisseurs who would anyway be able to gauge a performer's worth. However, with time that patronage disappeared and also there was conscious effort to engage the public in order to keep the art form relevant. This brought in many innovations such as the much shorter forms of 'khayal' in preference to the more exacting earlier format of 'Prabandh'. Also introduced was the notational singing to dissect and display the correct patterns of a raag, and other innovations such as the chromatic notes in semi classical forms. Anyway, loved your involved reactions to this stellar performance. Hope you will review other greats as well. 👍👏🙏
I literally was just about to comment that indian classical music is mostly improvisation. Being raised as a son of musician, I have the pleasure to listen my father riyaas and him singing.
Those are melodic structures basically "Do Re Mi Fa So La Ti Do" we use "Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Dha Ni Sa" .....she was exploring different combinations of notes without breaking the raaga and maintaining its rules, sargams, chalans, gamkams and ornamentations. Tempos change in a raag presentation. You start with the Alaap (Alaap literaly meaans introduction and you introduce the raag the feeling of that raag and usually is the slowest piece again usually without rhythm) next is the madhyam (whihc is is the middle where she explores rhythmic patterns with the Raag this is where the chalan of the raag which the rhythmic variations are explored usually are medium speed" and then finally the dhrut which are fast moving ornamentations, faster rhythms and finally coming to the grand ending where she will go back to the first note that she started with the "Sa".
The instuments in this performance are from left to right are : Tabla ( bayan and dayan) , 1st Tampura, Vocalist, 2nd Tampura, and concert Harmonium. The tampura is a 4 string Drone instrument which provides the fundamental tones of the raga. The tablas are also tuned to the fundamental tone, The harmonium is a free reed instrument like an accordion, it has two sets of bellows one to pump air into another spring loaded bellows that provides the sustain air supply. there are also drone notes on a harmonium that can be used in place or in conjunction with the tampura. there are many more differnt instruments used in indian classical and contemporary music. It's a result of 20 plus years of rigorous practice 8 to 10 hrs daily to produce such recitation. To reach , this level, it will take life man. Explore "raag" , u will find lot and lot of new aspects and will realise how complex this presentation was
Im glad to find someone who knows music in very detail and helps me understand it. I do play some tabla and drums but playing with notes at this level is very difficult. Thank you explaining and putting forth your doubts.
Most of the time she's singing what's called sargam, which is a type scat singing using the first syllables of the names of notes. The syllables are Sa, Re, Ga, Ma, Pa, DHA, Ni. The main lyric of the composition is ja ja re Apne mandirawa. She then intersperses sargam passages coming back to the main Composition at correct points of the rhythm cycle.
You have to practice 8+ hours for years to come close to singing this or master this.... she didn't told the tabla player to slow down the tempo but the volume a little...
WRT the tempo changes, Indian classical music doesn't follow the western rhythmic rules per se. For instance, this piece was composed in what is called "teen taal" (or 16 beat pattern) -- which goes "dha dhin dhin dha, dha dhin dhin dha, dha tin tin ta, ta dhin dhin dha" -- that is one measure. The mnemonics used, represent what part of the tabla drums is being struck -- think of it as if the big drum is the bass drum and the thinner one is like a snare/tom rolled into one. This pattern can then be subdivided to use 8th note, 16th notes, 32nd notes, in groups of couplets, triplets, qudruplets, and so it sounds faster but is really the same 16-beat measure. In the western musical sense, think of it as a cycle of 4 4/4 measures.
The words say 'Go away from my Temple, oh my beloved!! My Mother in Law and sister-in-law are waiting in there --SO go away my beloved--Listen to my words and go away now''. Its part of Sri Krishna Leela of Mahabharata and a part of daily life for the Gopi or the girl who is singing.
Please please react to Anuja Kamat Speech in TED X India to understand the fine line between Indian style of singing and western style of singing so that you will get better knowledge about the style we used in Indian style of singing. The video I suggest will definitely enlarge your knowledge about music. I'm very sure about that.
Those were the Indian octaves (Saa Re Ga Ma Pa Dha Ni Saa) that she was pronouncing.... And in Indian classical music, especially Raga, we don't just have the above mentioned octaves but, we actually try to reach an area of tone between the eight notes.
Mr Harris, this lady is very good but the consensus of the best ever was Nusrat, and here is one of his best performances: ruclips.net/video/T8JuNTLBEeo/видео.html To give you an idea of how good Nusrat was, he passed away in the 90s but they are still using his vocals today which garner hundreds of millions of views per video on youtube, and remains one of the most plagiarized artists in history. He also holds the record for the most albums of a Qawwali artist, and like Dimash he was born to a musical family- his family has been singing for around 600 years. He used to train for around 10 hours a day, was able to hold day-long concerts, had tremendous vocal range and power and agility. He often improvised and created lots of his own tunes and melodies, and was extremely generous, giving away lots of money and never went after ones that copied his work.

Mr.Harry your reactions are always interesting thanks ... please we look forward to another reaction from Dimash Kudaibergen please I recommend (Know-in New Wave 2019) it is a wonderful presentation, greetings from Mexico🙏🏽😌
I don't know if you done this artist yet but iyou gotta check them out. I found them about a month ago. They called St Paul and the Broken Bones. 2 songs 1) the grass is greener 2) their version of odis redding I been loving you .

I suggest not to watch too many of his videos all at once. Its always good to pace yourself and sometimes the more videos you watch of Dimash, it becomes predictable. Higher and louder isn't always best but the man sure can sing
Dimash is too overrated. The only thing good about him is his voice, vocal range and the way he uses his range. Otherwise, In terms of agility and flexibility of the voice (which literally determines how good you are at singing-because to sing you must be able to switch between notes rapidly) India and Pakistan have better singers. Range is natural, true singing takes hours and years of dedication
Welcome to India brother...2k years old history....I would suggest you to study about all the instruments...and also look for the depth in the Indian music ocean...there are many legends...there is soo much to learn for you American people.
Its like playing with Do Re Me Fa So La Tee Do with the Indian version of notes called Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Dha Ni Sa. However, in Indian Raga everything is impromptu, not structured.
You are basically listening to the last 10% of a rendition, which is very fast. It is the initial and middle that is slower and harder to pull off for the singer.
Mr Harris - I have a recommendation for you. I know deep down you're still trying to find something to fill the void since discovering Dimash and let's be real, nothing compares! But I have a recommendation that is unique, a true artist that will make you feel something when you listen to him...
