That’s awesome that you got sponsored by Unicorn Overlord. I’ve been playing the demo obsessively the past few days, and it’s absolutely fantastic. I highly recommend everyone to try it out if you’re a fan of Fire Emblem.
You know, the battle maps in Fire Emblem Fates are complete recreations of the Strategy Maps, as far as I know! When you enter battle, unlike Awakening which sort of has this "instanced" map to represent the area, Fates has you fighting the enemy in almost the exact same place your sprites were standing! I'd really like to see that zoomed out. I wonder if the floating islands in Revelations have detailed undersides?
oh huh, in Echoes it gets confirmed that the Risen do wear a mask with a weird bug inside so I wonder if them having faces in awakening was intentional for that or not
beat me to it. Though i can add this piece of information: its speculated that if their "eyes" glow red it means Grima is controlling them. (otherwise they would be feral monsters going berserk)
FEH also referenced it with 2 Risen masks (one with and one without the glowing eyes) that you can put on most units there. Did not know that started back in Echoes.
7:30 - I remember doing art for Colors 3D on the 3DS and it has this same feature to see the layers at an angle just like this... mainly to help keep track what thing is in what layer when making a drawing with a 3D effect popping out at you. The reason many of us artists "complete" layers where the audience obviously won't be able to see the details is mostly as a "just in case", like if we want to adjust the top (front) layer and it ends up revealing more of the bottom layer's contents without needing to go back to that layer to redraw/recolor the parts we could have chosen to omit before. Better safe than sorry, I'd say.
I don't think many will agree with me, but there's something so charming about the 'ugly' graphics on lot of these 3DS titles. It's like between the PSX and PS2, very unique
1:00 "the undead looking part of their bodies seems to be just a mask" That's because they are! Risen are reanimated by insects called Thanatophages which are placed on the insides of masks and then onto corpses.
That mystery continent looks to be the eastern half of Jugdral. I can see the sea between Isaac, Yied, and Thracia as well as the part where Thracia would have a land bridge to Miletos
Fun fact about FE:AWAKENING a lot of the risen lore and Grima lore was expanded upon in FE:Echoes (Gaiden Remake) which expanded on why some of the decisions on why the Risen looked and acted the way they did, and explained what Grima is. Now, Im not gonna be the one to spoil it as there ARE videos on it, but I do recommend playing both games for yourself (Echoes then Awakening) because it ties the whole story together, they all take place at the same area in different time periods, and its a 100% worth play. anywho... But yes, the risen are wearing a mask, and they are still zombies. play the games to figure out the reason! or look up a video lol.
Grima's skeleton actually stretches across at least two or three separate maps in Plegia! The game does an amazing job of making you feel Grima's enormity at every opportunity.
@@TriforceWisdom64 yeah, once I started thinking about it, I kinda put that together. Like, the map where you're fleeing Plegia after Emmeryn's death. That's definitely Grima's rib cage.
In some dialogue someone (maybe Lissa?) actually talks about enormous bones lying around and they say something like: that can’t actually be grima. I hope I remember this correctly
I'm really blown away by the level of detail they got on the 3DS for this game. But then you look at something like Pokemon on the switch and people blamed the hardware for the lack of detail...
@@toumabyakuyaThere's roughly 190 playable characters in Fire Emblem Awakening. They each have their own designs, attacks, and lines of dialogue in certain circumstances. 13:15 Wow this mystery continent really closely resembles the Jugdral map from Genealogy of the Holy War! Amazing to think that is hidden just slightly off camera, thank you for showing this off!
Risen wearing Death Mask is actually part of the lore! I think it was covered more in the Shadows of Valentia but there was a alchemist called Forneus that experimented with the undead and created a corpse army before he was sealed. Those corpses had masks with bugs places on their faces (called Death Masks) and in two night the bugs will take over the host. The bugs would pour preservation fluids into the host stopping/slowing the decay of the flesh and boosting their physical attributes. The bugs use the Risen to seek food and when there is none, the bugs go into slumber.
Oh, yeah! Fire Emblem! I'm surprised I never thought about breaking its boundaries before; the 3D entries have so much interesting stuff tucked away in the battle scene backgrounds, some of which are only used like once, and some of which might never be seen because the terrain the game checks for is so rare.
Polys are cheaper than texture resolution. Video memory is taken into account when making textures. For old hardware, it's common practice to paint half of the texture and UV unrap your model so that one half is flipped and covers the other. This is why cases like character asymmetry are done by using accessories rather than making a larger texture. Compare to modern hardware where Vram isn't that big of a deal as the assets come with different texture resolutions (depending on the target platform). UV unwrapping is also not part of the pipeline anymore as models became too complex to do so. Basically, artists just paint directly on them and let the software do the rest during export with maybe a little optimisation phase.
Love the switching between the calm and Ablaze versions of the themes based on your VO. Great editing and the effort you put into your work really shows. Keep it up!
this makes me really curious about Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn. they're the first fully 3D fire emblem games and i guarantee theres a lot to see, even on the outskirts of some of the maps
Thank you for doing this episode. I'd be interested in ones for Fates and Echoes, too. And also, I remember finding a cat in one of the maps in Awakening. I thought it was so cool that they put little animals in the maps to breathe a bit of life into the area.
Oh man, I absolutely adore this game. Its so cool to see all of these out of bound tricks, it's also really nice to see from a game development perspective!
Long time Boundary Break + Fire Emblem fan!!! I'm so exited to see this episode. I never thought I'd see a Fire Emblem Boundary Break ever and I'm super excited!!
Fire Emblem Awakening means a lot to me and it's one of my favorite games, so I'm really excited to learn more about it! Loved this episode can't wait for any other Fire Emblem you do. FE is one of my absolute favorite series! Glad you started out with my favorite one though!
Seeing the different layers of the 2D art used to make a 3D effect is pretty cool. And oh yeah, already preordered Unicorn Overlord. Looks pretty great
I really loved playing Awakening, so it’s really cool to see all the little details! I was surprised that they actually did have the risen masks before they actually talked about the masks in Echoes.
It's crazy to me that the tiny map models have details like modelled trees, the fortresses and uneven terrains. It looked like just sprites from the tiny screen.
The layers on Grima's body in the 2D artwork is a likely indication that it was going to be slightly animated, with the separate body elements moving to create a more dynamic scene. This way we'd be able to partially see what's under those layers but I guess they opted out of animating this image part way through making it.
In Chapter 6, there's a desk nearby Emmeryn, and by the desk is a chest with a Secret Book. The desk in the start screen might be that desk in Chapter 6.
I am surprised that this is the first Fire Emblem Boundary Break Episode. "Top Down Game Series that transitioned into 3D by now." screams for Boundary Break.
I forgot how cute this game looked. I started with Fire Emblem Three Houses, which was also kinda cute, but something about DS and 3DS games being so minute felt a lot cuter. It's like they're little toy characters or something.
I'm not a fan of Engage, but I don't think it's lacking soul. It just pivoted into some goofier territory than its predecessors and didn't stick the landing.
Engage isn't bad persay. They did try a lot of things. The problem is the tone. They went from hard, realistic war in Three Houses, with a serious political framing, to Engage which was... kinda goofy.
I loved Awakening and seeing the inner workings of the environments of the game that carried me through highschool is more magical than a tome of Thoron. Speaking of 3DS, have you considered coverage on the Yo-kai Watch series? Specifically 3? Yo-kai Watch has a ton of urban and rural environments, all with a lot of cute little bits, bobs, and details. Also, absolutely hyped for Unicorn Overlord! Played the demo thrice before I had to convince myself to wait for the full release in just two days!!!
An additional detail I want to add over the "Book of Secrets" and the other book on the table! In 2021, I found these textures on a 3DS ressource website and tried to read through it, and the content is actually a 2011 copy-pasted cnblogs page on how to "Create a Wii Web Header in Photoshop" that's copied multiple time to fill the entire page. It says "Select the Rounded Rectangle Tool from your tools palette then above your screen under options palette choose Fill Pixels, set the radius to 16 px and check anti-aliased. Create a new layer and draw a light gray, color code #2F2F2F rounded rectangle , exact size 115x23px. Now cut the top corners of the rounded rectangle." and repeats again and again. Absolutely random, but I thought it was funny they put some (barely) readable english text about a Wii Header tutorial on a 3DS game.
Hey! The Book of Secrets probably reffers to the Logbook the player can actually read in-game. It has a bit of information about every unit. There's a DLC map where they lost this very same book and everybody is worried.
I wish you had taken the chance to look at the risen lords at the end of the game and/or within the DLC. If I remember right, it is hinted heavily, if not outright stated, that they were fallen Shepherds from another timeline, and I'm curious if they used the shepherds models for them or not. I'm guessing not, instead it is just generic models, but there does feel like there is a small chance for them to sneak that tiny detail in.
The continent that we can't access is probably Jugdral, which is the location of Genealogy of the Holy War and Thracia 776. We have not returned to that continent since the SNES era.
I think the continent to the left of Valm/Valentia is actually the continent from the 4th and 5th games. It has the same kind of geography I think, so it’d make sense.
Would definitely recommend Unicorn Overlord. The Visuals of Odin Sphere+the Gameplay of Fire Emblem+a narratove system that brings New Vegas to mind? Yes. It's great. It came out on my birthday and it's one of the best gifts I could've asked for lol
so happy to see the grima model in more detail. it's such an underrated and unconventional dragon design, and the game doesn't really show us much. there's honestly only a handful of illustrations of it as a dragon too
I do hope one day you’ll do a boundary break of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. One thing I’d love to see is how Midgar looks up close from the open world. How much of it is actually modeled.
Thank you so much for this I love the Fire Emblem series have played since I was a kid on gamecube. Would love an episode on one of the switch Fire Emblem games or Echoes Shadows of Valencia. 😊

This gives me hope for a Boundary Break episode about Three Houses, the most popular game in the series
Omg my teenage years classic!
19:12 Really cool to read my name in the credits just as you stumble over your words 😂 I'm infecting you
Thank you so much for this I love the Fire Emblem series have played since I was a kid on gamecube. Would love an episode on one of the switch Fire Emblem games or Echoes Shadows of Valencia. 😊
