  • How To Install A Hatch On Your Kayak
Hey guys this week I show you how to install a new hatch on your kayak. Its not as hard as you may think and if you need more storage than its a major improvement!
So the main reason I decided to add a new hatch to my kayak is because my kayak only has a 4 inch deep storage spot on the nose of my kayak, and its not even water proof. So its basically useless to me. My wife and I have been talking about kayak camping as of late so I decided to find a way to get more storage, or at least easier to access storage lol.

Great video! I was kooking to do the same thing on my pelican. The standard hatch is worse than useless, because if you put anything under the bungees the cap pops off. Pelican has started using a smarter hatch this year.
I ordered the same kit you used. My only problem is with the screws. I dont want sharp points down in the boat that could tear open a drybag or a float bag, or cut my arm. I'm replacing them with short bolts and nuts nstead.

Yea that would be a good call! Ive not had any problems with mine yet, but I could see that causing a major problem on a long trip

Hello AJ this was a good video you did of installing the hatch on the kayak. I like how you explain what you needed it for & then showing how to do it. I just bought a new kayak and it does not have any storage space so I want to add this hatch to the kayak. This is the type of hatch i want to buy because I have a Wilderness system kayak that has this hatch on it and I really really love it. I have never had a problem with it since I own the kayak. This video really going to help me out. Thank you so much for making this video and sharing it.

That was very clear and concise. Showed exactly what you were doing and what needed to happen. I'm still wondering what Pelican had in mind with that forward storage hatch...
This is the best solution I've seen.

Thank you! I'm glad you liked the video! As far as their original forward hatch design goes, to me its usless. It's too small to hold much in it, it's not water tight and if your sliding into the water from the bank at a steeper angle it always fills up with water. Honestly I've not had any issues since I installed it and I can get things in the front alot easier.

Your vid fit my search perfectly....my pelican mustang cover tends to slip that little hook at highway speeds, letting that lid flap around. No good!
I'll get my deck hatch (via your link) I a couple days!

@@chuppoacobra that's great! It's really handy, and I haven't had too many issues with water comming in. But if yours leaks a little more than you'd like I did another video leak testing it and I ended up adding some through the roof to seal it up tighter.

I have the exact same kayak and want to do this to mine, but there are many different sized ones. Which one did you choose? Was it the 6''/9'' one that shows up when you click the link?

Re Watched the video to hear you say 9 inches haha nevermind. But thank you for the video, I'm excited to do this to my Kayak. Got it for Christmas, so I'll have plenty of time to modify it before I actually get to use it in the spring
