DIY Kayak Bulkhead Installation

- In this video I build a home made kayak bulkhead to fit in the front of my Daintree Hunter kayak to make a waterproof front storage area for camping gear when I head out kayak camping. This video shows how I built the bulkhead and what materials I used.

Brilliant! I'm going to do this to my Walden Vista.
@@cynthiaberend4877 nice
Cool mod thanks for the sharing the process.
Thanks Mike.
Well Done Mate-probably more water tight than a lot of Factory ones I reckon!
Thanks dismal. I tried to make it extra redundant.
This is great! Just bought a kayak with a perished bulkhead and need to repair it. Will absolutely be tryimg this! Thank you.
Good luck with it
I’ve done a lot of mods to my kayak and I have been looking to partition mine for some time now. Could not find a single vid about how to stencil the inside so this was very useful. Absolutely plan to use that trick.
Thanks for the great feedback. The bulkhead I made is still going strong.
Great Idea. This will be a useful and cheap mod to my kayak. Thanks for the video.
Mine is still holding well too
very clever! Thanks for a very good tip!
Thanks for the comment Kevin. It will be good to see how it performs on my first spring trip.
Tip top job,,,I'm doing this. Thank you 😁
Thanks
Thank you very much for this.
You're welcome
Excellent.... Thank you..
no problems
I loved this video. I had been thinking about doing the exact same thing but I was going to try to use some other material rather than stirofoam insulation... I too was afraid of kicking it. BUT YOU MAY in fact have it right.
Thank you for your insights!!
Thanks Gene I hope it turns out well
Genius.
Thanks David.
Genius! I wish my pro angler was that easy to work on 😂
Ha ueah sit on tops are a bit different. In the past I've used spray foam to create bulkheads in mine.
Is that a Galaxy, mate..?
ive heard many people say you want to let some air through for pressure equalization. Not sure why though.
Wouldn't that defeat the purpose. Perhaps a pressure relief valve that let's air out but not in.
Thank you for this video...can you tell me what material is the laminate you use?
It's ok...reading below, I see it was a vinyl wrap.
hey mate, I spotted a raised seat with some PVC piping which looks like a frame, could you give any details on how you did that, or did you do that in a previous video at all? cheers!
I didn't do a specific video on it but if you go check out this video I've linked, at about the 16 minute mark I show it and explain it. ruclips.net/video/8U7khIqz6bU/видео.html
This looks great, thank you. How did you manage to apply the silicon sealant to the side of the bulkhead thats facing the front. That front hatch looks quite small.
It went in there easy enough. The hardest part was smoothing out the bead and checking for holes
@@AllThingsOutdoors Great, thanks very much for that. Hows the kayaking going at the moment?
I sold that one but it was still holding well when I last used it.
This is amazing! When you are out on the water, does any flex in the kayak while you are paddling cause the seal to break?
Never had an issue with leakage. I sold this kayak about 18 months ago so hopefully still holding strong.
@@AllThingsOutdoors I'd go so far as to say the bulkhead adds rigidity to the kayak hull, and that can't be bad, eh? EXCELLENT WORK!
I hadn't thought of that. Yeah I can see how that would strengthen the hull.
Where did you find a wheel to fit on your marker?
I think I used a hose pipe adapter but you could use anything really. You could even make it out of cardboard.
Hey there, great solution. Love the outcome. I’ve recently purchased a Daintree Hunter - and was looking at doing something similar myself. But my design is more like a ‘v’ - because if the internal footrests. Ive noticed that yours doesn’t have the foot rests installed. Did you remove them - or were they not installed?
Could you let us know what kind of sealant did you exactly use? My silicone sealant seems pretty soft and peels off easily.
I used silaflex 11fc. It bonds well and is flexible.
@@AllThingsOutdoors That was a quick answer, thank you! Also, do you remember what kind of laminate you used to cover the foam?
It was a vinyl wrap.
@@AllThingsOutdoors Well, it looks like I've got some work to do on my kayak! Happy paddles!
I was super proud of myself when I made this. Hope yours turns out well too.
How did this hold up??
I sold it about 18 months ago but held up well until I did.
@@AllThingsOutdoors I may give something similar myself.
