I started following Dr. Berg in September, 2020. I was 330 pounds, 6’ 4”. My leg was swelling, I had acid reflux, on two blood pressure pills and 2 Cholesterol pills. I started fasting and I cut out carbs, I worked into a 24 hour fast . This morning I weighed out at 245 pounds, no swelling, no acid reflux and the doc and taken me off 1/2 my meds. He is impressed. Thanks for the info Dr. Berg.

I would love to cure my depression. Were you only drinking water or did you drink black coffee?

    • @ulynvanzyl8474
      @ulynvanzyl8474 23 дня назад

@ yes, tea and coffee. I didnt plan on going into a fast and had honestly never fasted a day in my life before that, kind of stumbled into it 😄 (too much to explain on a text) but spending time in Gods presence is key, watching teachings, listening to christian music and singing along! Reading your bible and i my case ive never really been the “read it from the fron the the back” kind of person, but ive always searched for answers in the bible and a bible app is great for that. Eg looking up all the verses in the bible that speaks of Gods promises to heal and restore or ‘forgiveness’ or any other topic you feel your dealing with. All the answers are right there and at the same time your body has time to heal itself.
Extended fasting (to whatever degree you can) is hugely beneficial. I would suggest going on a full waterfast for the first 10days though. Its very difficult to start any fast, temptations will derailing you quick, even with the best of intent, so fulling fasting (only water) is hard, but the easiest. (If that makes any sense) usually after day 10 all food cravings go away completely and you can pretty much go for as long as you want with very little effort.

    • @ulynvanzyl8474
      @ulynvanzyl8474 17 дней назад

@@MsTumz473 had coffee and tea. I actually didnt plan on fasting, i feel like i was lead into it due to what i had gone through at that point and so i didnt prepare, or research or anything. All i know is quite a number of people in the bible fasted and that i would do the same. I have since done quite a few shorter fasts with my last 30 day one having ended 26 November. The forst 10 days is by far the worst, you will be tempted, you will want to quit every hour, you will most likely feel horrible from detoxing, but if you make it past day 10, you can pretty much go for as long as you want. Personally when i start a fast i drink only water, often even hot water to mimic a hot morning drink and i dont drink more that my body wants. If you only drink a 1L thats fine, dont ‘2wake up your stomach’ if you can get the first day or two under the belt by just consuming what you feel you need.

0:04 Prolonged fasting is one of the most important things you can do for your health, for your ability to avoid cancer, for anti-aging, for straightening your immune system, for your brain to grow brain cells, for any type of chronic health condition that involves inflammation like auto-immune disease, like celiac and digestive inflammatory diseases. Prolonged fasting just takes your health results to the next level. It's wayyy more powerful than even regular intermittent fasting.
1:01 Things you need to know when you do prolonged fasting:
1:20 Mistake #1 - Breaking your fast with carbs
4:14 Mistake #2 - Doing intense exercise or a lot of physical work
    5:05 Mistake #3 - Overeating after a prolonged fast
6:33 Mistake #4 - Consuming apple cider vinegar coming off of a prolonged fast
    7:21 Mistake #5 - Consuming protein powders

Eating raw vegetables like greens containing insoluble fiber to break a very long fast is way too hard on the digestive system especially raw veggies. That could actually put you in the hospital. Well cooked vegetables with soluble fiber that are easy to digest like potato well pureed in a soup broth with egg is easy on the system I would ignore his non excercise recommendation if you do not have a medical condidtion. The body was designed for survival to daily hunt with intensity for food while being without it for many days or even weeks.

I had a severe inflammation problem in my hands feet and face. I also had other odd symptoms. My doctors suspected it was either lupus, Lyme, diabetes, or some other condition but they could never diagnose me. I tried many treatments and home remedies that didn't help. The doctor's wanted to put me on steroids and I didn't want that. I became desperate for relief so I tried a 3 day fast and for the first time in months I had zero inflammation! I have been doing 3 day fasts now every 1-2 months and I've lost 20 pounds and I feel great.

  • @suzannedunning8699
    @suzannedunning8699 2 года назад +35

I wish I had known about adding salt etc. when doing a prolonged fast.
I grew up fasting as a kid when we were sick- we did it because we lived on a farm and thats what animals do when they're sick. And it makes sense- every symptom is the body saying "don't eat please!" (food tastes bland because your nose is congested, your throat is sore, etc. etc.) It was hard- as a kid people thought my parents were psycho but now I see how ahead of the times they were.
I never had to take antibiotics once. And I rarely got sick. But when I was 14 I got Scarlet Fever and fasted for almost three weeks on just water. But the beautiful thing is that at the end you can tell that you body truly "fought" the virus or bacteria and therefore the immune system evolved or adapted! Meaning that then you don't get recurring infections (such as Strep throat which people tend to get repeatedly)
Last year I had covid and fasted for 10 days (on just water). The beautiful thing is when you get to the end of being sick you feel like your body has cleaned up all the house keeping it hasn't gotten to do when you're normally eaten.
So when you fast when you get sick (which feels natural anyway) you can see that being sick is actually perhaps part of how we stay healthy in a larger sense.

I started intermittent fasting in January. Ive lost 6kg so far. The past 3 weeks I went a step further and now do a prolonged 36 hour fast once a week. I stop eating by 8pm sunday, then eat breakfast at 8am Tuesday. For the rest of the week i stick to minimum 18 hours of fasting per day.
I feel great, my sleep is so much better, my skins got better. I have so much more energy. The past month I have really focused on elimating processed crappy food from my diet. Its made such a difference. Next month I'm going to do a 72 hour fast.

I think best reason to do a longer fast (like a week of just water) is the experience that will change you forever and make you look very differently at whatever short fasting regime you are planning to do. Skipping a breakfast will no longer look like a problem after you have experienced a week of no calories.
For me it was observing how you first get hungry but then the hunger passes (which is super strange), the feeling of lightness and clarity throughout the fast (totally unexpected -- I thought I will be sluggish and hard to focus) and then the feeling of breaking the fast as a nuisance (I thought breaking the fast will be something I will be looking to but the opposite was true).

eating raw vegetables after a long fast as he seems to recommend is too hard on the digestive system. That could actually put you in the hospital. It's better to eat things that are easily digested and well cooked like potato or other well cooked vegetables cremed in a soup broth with eggs. And slowly over a few days introduce more solid food

I am one of those person’s with a mother of autoimmune diseases - Systemic Sclerosis. I had everything happening to my body, death was knocking on my door. After 6 years of treating it with food which helped cos I turned my diet 180 degrees around my disease eventually started to accelerate and bad things started happening and death was creeping against my door. Fasting made a huge difference. Only started doing it 6 months ago and I feel so much better. I think my next consultant visit will be amazed as I feel my inflammation has significantly reduced. About 7 months ago raise my left arm, was painful beyond belief and pain was moving towards my chest and my right arm and neck was beginning to hurt. I just kept intermittent fasting and fasting for 36 to 48 hours every two weeks. I also kept exercising, forcing my arm to move and crying cos was painful beyond belief. Pain started coming and not totally going until now it’s almost gone. It’s a scale of 2 out of 10 whereas before was 15 out of 10. I can raise and use both arms without concern. I feel I will beat my disease through food, exercise and fasting. Gone from walking up my stairs was hard and left me breathless to power walking up hills, press ups, plank - everything. Intermittent and prolonged fasting is the ultimate weapon against combating disease.

Few years ago i fasted and added a bit of baking soda in the water the first few days, and also drink small quantities of water. in fact drinking very little. I did 14 days on water and felt very good. Another point i find very important, be strong and don't cheat! So many time i stopped fasting after few days because i was chewing a bit of bread. Thanks Dr. Berg!
Over the last 15-20 years I've been randomly fasting a few times a year from 2 days up to 40 days twice.
This year I've gotten into the habit of fasting 5 days every 5 weeks.
I'm 54 years young & work through fasting in logistics, goods deliveries to supermarkets & timber yards.
Also I walk 3~4 miles to & from work (10-15 hour shifts) in cold Scotland with plenty of driving rain, sleet, etc.
What results can I expect long term?
    I feel fine.

I fasted for a year or so. I didn't lose a bit of weight but I slimmed down. I found that very interesting. Then I took on a new job where I have to get up at 4 am every morning and I've done this for over 2 years now and it has reeked havoc on my weight and health because I can't fast like I use to :( I have tried my best to work different times but nothing works as well for me as 12-7/8pm with a family of 3 small boys. Even when I fasted all I thought about was food and when I could eat and when I had to eat next so that I wouldn't miss my fasting time at the end and I rushed a lot. I hated that feeling. Either way, I hope to get back on it again one day maybe when I have a normal schedule again. Thanks Dr. Berg for all your information!

Great work doc. I'm 22 days into a 40 day fast and I am very glad you've taught me about the insulin thing here. My last 14 day fast I just about killed myself on the overeating thing aswell. Definitely un-did any good things that happened to my digestive system. I'll be much more careful this time.
Any videos about really long fasts like the 40 day fast?

@@timgutierrez2211 honestly Tim, that's all it takes. The only thing to fear is fear itself.
I have to say.. the amount of trauma I have experienced in my life by constantly putting off the 40 days has been significantly more grooling than had I just done this years ago.
There is nothing to worry about. If you take electrolytes you will be completely fine. After day 5 the ketones are doing their thing and you will feel fine. I have been running everyday up until 3 days ago. And been moving wood around my property since then and real weakness only kicked in yesterday at day 23. Obviously I don't recommend the average person to be exersizing during this, but I am a testimony to how far you can take this.
I was an obese smoker with every addiction under the sun. Now I am healthier than ever and I have delayed my demon's, all of them, never to return.
My advice: stop over thinking it and just f- do it 😁
Benefits I have received so far:
7 years long migraine - gone.
20kg of fat and toxins - gone.
      Skin complexion better.
Microbiome reset and my own willpower restored (rather than having the little buggers telling my brain what to do)
Fitness is at least 4x what it was.
Feeling closer to who I am as a person spirituality, ridding myself of my huge ego and being left with very simple desires such as to just help the poor.
I have also been on the no fap and I'd probably put it down to that, but my member is bigger and harder than ever before.
I mean.... The rewards are endless, and the endurance test is a medium level discomfort at best.
Day 4 is ALWAYS hell for me. I have done other fasts, the longest being 14 days. And day 4 is when my proteins reconfigure into the ketosis state and it's an uncomfortable experiences for sure. But in all honestly, out of the 23 days I've done, maybe 5 of them were a bit tough. The idea of the 40 days is significantly worse than actually just doing it.

A lot of what Dr. Berg says here reminds me of when the Allies liberated Nazi internment camps at the end of WWII. The GIs' first impulse was to start handing the prisoners all sorts of food since they were obviously starving. When the medics arrived they had to take away the food, although it was heartbreaking to do so, because they realized the harm cheese, bread, meat, etc. would cause to bodies that had been in a starvation state for months and even years. One of the episodes of "Band of Brothers" includes scenes dealing with this.

But I'm glad I decided to do some research so I don't mess up my body. I honestly don't think I did this fast right, but it's my first time not eating for so long, so I'll get better the next time. That sounds stressful especially during the body weak state. Do you mind sharing your story, even though it been a year?

20 minutes later a full plate of fruits, 3 to 4 different kinds, strawberries, blueberries, oranges, mango and a glass of 1 beetroot a six carrots on the blender.
Half hour later I have my dinner. Pumpkin, broccoli, carrots ,with Turkey, or chicken or fish.
    Desert, porridge with coconut milk.
Next meal in 20 or 24 later.
    At the moment I can't eat everything I want..cause pancreas inflammation ..
    I'm 6.3
Weight was 127 kg one month ago I'm now 113kg and the pain is better, not so sharp like before but also related to what I eat.
Walk 2 hours to do 7 km or speed up to do 1.20 minutes every second day.
Not to sure if I'm doing correctly or if I should do it differently or missing something??
