Beginners Guide to Prolonged Fasting | 24-72 Hour Fasting Instructions - Thomas DeLauer
Stem Cells
This comes into play after 2-3 days of fasting
A study from USC found that prolonged fasting (2-3 days) can reset and regenerate the immune system - resulted in the depletion of white blood cells and triggered stem cell-based regeneration of new immune system cells.
Found that white blood cells are broken down during fasting, which in turn forces the stem cells in your body to produce more - the new white blood cells are not just new, but healthier and more effective than the previous cells
news.usc.edu/63669/fasting-tri...
Telomeres
Telomeres are a protective coating or cap at the end of each chromosomal DNA strand found in your cells
These protective caps help to preserve your DNA by preventing DNA strands from fraying or clumping together, which can lead to cellular damage, the precursor to disease and accelerated aging
An enzyme called telomerase can re-lengthen telomeres that are shortened during DNA replication
Stem cells are the sentinel cells of our body - when our cells incur damage, stem cells swoop in and secrete proteins that initiate the repair process
When our cells die, they give birth to daughter cells that can replace the cells we lose through a process called differentiation
The great thing about stem cells is that they express telomerase, so they tend to maintain long telomeres
Additionally, cells that are born directly from stem cells likely have longer telomeres than cells that aren't, based on the simple fact that they're one cell division away from exposure to high levels of telomerase
The more stem cells means more daughter cells from those stem cells - daughter cells that come directly from stem cells are a step removed from telomerase, and therefore should have longer telomeres

Ketones
The body begins, on average, burning ketones between 24 to 48 hours of fasting - BHB, in particular, has been found to benefit the immune system
A study from the Yale School of Medicine found that exposing human immune cells to BHB following 2 days of fasting resulted in a reduced inflammatory response
BDNF
Study published in the journal Applied Physiology Nutrition & Metabolism found that a 48-hour fast upregulated BDNF by ∼ 3.5-fold
www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/2...
Autophagy
There's no set time for when autophagy kicks in - autophagy is always occuring on some level, but increases when fasting
So it seems that the length for autophagy should really be based on the length of the other benefits as it'll be occurring alongside them
How to Start
4 to 5 days of keto before to make the transition easier - the body's of those who are not fat adapted are reliant upon a constant supply of sugar
If you jump headfirst into a fast, your body won't be able to efficiently utilize stored fats - when your blood sugar dips, it'll bring about symptoms such as lightheadedness, carb cravings, dizziness, the inability to focus and your usual sugar crash
How Should I Break My Fast
Break fast with lean protein at night, then go to bed, and resume normal eating (for extra fat burning)
Should I Workout
Low intensity exercise would still be ideal as it's preferable to deplete muscle glycogen, not just liver glycogen
A main function of glycogen is to maintain a physiological blood glucose concentration, but only liver glycogen directly contributes to release of glucose into the blood
Skeletal muscles are unable to release glucose (because muscles lack glucose 6-phosphatase) and muscles glycogen is mainly a local energy substrate for exercise, rather than an energy source to maintain blood glucose concentration during fasting
Muscle glycogen can be broken down to lactate, which can be transported to the liver and via gluconeogenesis in the liver contribute to maintaining euglycemia (Cori cycle)
However, humans do not show major decrease in muscle glycogen content during fasting - in contrast, the liver glycogen content decreases rapidly during fasting and the liver glycogen content has decreased by ∼65% after 24 h fasting

Hey I'm 26 and I just finished my 7 days water fast (168 hours) i lost 5.8 kilos (13 lb) and I'm so proud of myself ❤
Well done!
Did you like gain it back or was it permanent
@@ruinsofaugust good question, some of it might be water weight
After successfully completing a 48-hour fast, can I eat whenever I want? If so, how long can I do it before starting a long fast again without gaining back what I've already lost during the first fasting?
Let's say I can eat whenever I want, does that mean I can also eat whatever I want? Including chocolate or rice?
Thank you!
FYI. I currently weigh 121kg. I do 6-18 fasting, no restrictions on my intake, and doing intermediate lifting four times a week.
So great!
I am 56 hours into my 72 hr fast and the floater in my left eye, which has been there for so long and driving me crazy, is totally gone. Halaluja, God is good.
Same here. The tension in the left side of my brain is gone. I'm doing this regularly!!!!
I have had PVD in my right eye for the past five years and have just come off a four day water fast followed by a 16-8 fast. The PVD is still there but your experience has given me hope. Thank you.
@@wirefreez hey i have had a flickering spot in my eye for the past 5 months, its not a floater and has similar symptoms of a torn retina. ive been to an eye doctor and he said he doesnt see any signs of a detached retina and wanted me to see a retina specialist. i havent done that yet. Im not too familiar with pvd, could that be the issue?
@@BringMeTheHorizonnn Hi - PVD (post vitreous detachment) is a pulling away of part of the film at the back of the eyeball - sort of like a wrinkle in cellophane - and it causes a permanent floater which has the effect of like looking through cobwebs, It doesn't flicker for me but I would definitely ask your retina specialist about it. There is a simple test they can do with an electronic instrument that photographs the back of your eye. Wishing you well.
I'm 52 hours into a 72 Hr fast right now and reading this comment made me realize my buddy is gone 😭
Every time I do a 48 hour fast I watch this video, no matter how many times I have watched it, it keeps me current on what's actually happening within my body and helps me feel more focused on my goals. I've lost count on how many times I've watched this video lol
check out Dr.Berg videos
Big facts
How many times you done it now? Just doing my 1st one
Or you can use some fasting app that will keep track of the hours and tell you what's happening right now is to body, there are many out there
Dr Berg doesn’t reference the studies like this guy does (I’m not saying that Berg violates the studies, just saying that it’s an advantage of Tom’s videos)…however I think that Dr Berg’s one video on what happens inside your body during a 72 hour fast is more enjoyable to watch while on a fast. He has the CGI throughout the video and that gets you more excited because you’re watching little CGI clips of your body going into hyper healing mode lol.

I just fasted for 20 min, it felt great!!!!
now thats a fast fast

Lol
😮 Damn! 👏
tig79 rover I got u beat partner... 5 min fast over here..it was awesome!!!😂😂😂
If you feed your body the correct fuel, going 24 or 48 hours without food should not be too difficult. It's more mental endurance you will be testing. We often eat for all the wrong reason. Great video!
@Solidario Libertad right. A lot of vegetables, the fiber will keep you satiated longer.
I’m type 1 diabetic Would a long term fast be too dangerous and create a hypoglycemic situation,? Ones insulin sensitivity could change quickly,Thus basal rate might be to strong and cause low blood sugar.
I do do intermittent fasting, I skip breakfast. But have a really hard time keeping my blood sugar from going really low when I exercise. Which gets frustrating because I have to have a juice box to prevent low but put the calories back on.😕😕😕
Isabella kelsay there is a documentary on Netflix about fasting that reviews this and many other questions. From what I gathered it can help people suffering with diabetes. My grandpa has it also, and I wish he would heed my advice about his eating habits so he could help himself but people who aren’t aware of this stuff... they think it’s absurd. I hope fasting helps you! Maybe that documentary will provide you some nice info (:
Sarah Smile I just jumped into a water prolonged fast. I’m on 71 hours, one more to go. The first day was tough, cravings and headaches come and go. It gets way easier after the first 48 hrs. I feel great! I’m almost dreading eating again, first meal will be a salad.
Isabella kelsay I would ask your physician, you’re insulin dependent so you shouldn’t change your diet as radically as a type 2 or pre-diabetic.
I watched this video 45 hours into my 3 day fast and it gave me the motivation to continue. I watched it twice. Just to think about the health benefits make me want to continue. My dad had diabetes and high cholesterol when he was 50 yrs old. He suffered until.he died when he was 59. My mom died from a heart attack and my sister died from depression. Prolonged fasting could have saved their lives. I am making sure that I saved my life by fasting and introducing fasting to others who have chronic illnesses. Keep.up the good work,!
Thanks for this comment. I have had diabetes since I was 32. 38 now, keto for 5 months i.f. 20 / 4 50lbs down and no more meds. I feel amazing and my sugar levels are of a normal person. I was scared to do 72 hrs. All in now. Respect from so ca.

Wow, just blown away with the quality of this well constructed narrative with an excellent level of detail which was easy to follow. Adding a little salt to my water indeed prevents me having a feeling of faintness which I experienced on day 3 of my first fast. Thomas, this was the first video I saw from you but immediately subscribed. Looking forward to more excellent content. Thank you ! Tom
So much great info! I once (15 yrs ago) did a 10 day fast while training for half marathon as a test after learning about benefits of fasting. The plan was to end the fast if there were any issues during training. For sodium I would have a cup of miso at the end of day which I was told wouldn't end my fast. I went all the way, ran a personal best, and completed the fast 2 days later. Our bodies are pretty amazing but we have to know the best way to treat it.

Am on keto since January. And just now I past 24 hours with no food . Feel good . Thanks for advice.
Throw you "for a loop"
Love your content. I'm a 61 yr male and just lost 20 lbs on keto. I was looking for some guidance on muscle building and strategy with autophagy and stem cells. Your channel is perfect.
You've inspired me to get healthy....success! Thank you so much! You are the best source of information for us all. ☺️
I'm so happy I found this video. Just finished my 48 hr fast. Had my bone broth and shrimp with seaweed. Now going to watch a movie and go to bed. My brain kept telling me to keep eating but leaving it until tomorrow now. Feeling rescued. Thank you for everything. Hope to be 60lbs down by tomorrow morning.
You’re so awesome Thomas. Really glad I found your channel.

Don't be sorry for explaining free knowledge, you doing great, thank you for it
I find fasting on keto so much easier than I did in my carb days, thankful for this video!.
Excellent video, Thomas! Thanks, this information was very helpful to me.
I find cucumbers sprinkled with himalayan salt and a boiled egg is a gentle way to break a fast also.
Himalayas salt is a hoax
I did a 3 day water fast. I was looking up (healthy) recipes THE WHOLE TIME. I don't know if that made it worse. But when I broke my fast I transitioned into IF easily.
Jamedra A I just did the same thing 😂😂😂
Keep it up y'all
This is one of the best explanation regarding prolonged fasting. Spot on and thank u for the information
You’re the best Thomas!!! I always come to you every time I prepare for a specific fast.
Although the science sometimes is over my level of comprehension it helps me consolidate within myself that there are important aspects to understand in doing this practice for health and weight loss benefits.
For me it’s about my health and I know I will lose the fat if I do it properly
This is the best information Thomas always delivers. I fasted for 24 hours and this Video helps understand it better THANK YOU Thomas
Starting a 72 hour fast. This is my first time going this long. I usually give in to craving and grab a handful of cereal or boil an egg, not having done research about insulin and fat absorption during the process. This time I’m prepared & determined to let the process happen and do the mental work needed to avoid those pesky snacks that taunt you during the first 36 hours. Thanks for this video
Yes or the lucid dreams about eating food or breaking one's fast - somehow, while sleeping.
Awesome video! Thanks for making this. It answered all of the questions I had about this subject.
Going on 3 million subscribers I can’t believe I just discovered this channel
I recently did a few 24-26 hour fast on DNP recently, felt great, results were great, mentally was not hard at all, plan on trying a longer drug free fast some time in the future
I don’t condone utilizing what I used, it was a tool I could implement given I was off from work and school, had no access to a proper gym for a month and had excess fat to lose.
I really appreciate how you explained the difference between IF and longevity of 24+ fasting. Very articulate! Also bonus points for citing sources and biochemical mechanics :D
SUPER content, worth watching multiple times!! THANKS
Thank you!!!
Bro, that’s an fantastic video with so much infos. I feel safe to try my very first fast because of you. This is how creators should think. You‘re the man!
Excellent video! So much science! I love it. Thanks Thomas.
you have no idea how long i've been searching the internet for this type of in-depth video! it feels like most people keep spewing the same redundant info without specifying the HOW... I also really appreciate how you provided a vegan alternative! thank you, instantly subbed!!!
me too
Jason fung give a lot of info, lot.
@@su2sa1li4 Yes Jason is great and he doesn't blatantly push products. That said, I don't blame Thomas for supporting his channel with ethical sponsors provided he actually believes in them. Everyone has to make a living and Thomas does provide great information with professional and highly entertaining videos.
Just passed 24. Gonna try 48. Thought it would be impossible as I am a big breakfast eater. I feel great after that initial downer 6 hours in
Love the infos . I did fasting like almost 4 years ago and I couldn’t wait to listen to this awesome guy
Awesome & thanks for including a vegan fast- break reference. I'm just beginning my fasting adventures as a vegan, thankfully gluten & soy free as much as possible, and I'm still looking to get the best out of this. I'm grateful for all of your sharing. Cheers
I just finished my first 3 day fast! I'm also trying to get fat adapted.
Great video, thanks! Been fasting for 48 hours now and I start to feel a bit of beautiful "high" in my brain. Will try to aim for 72 hours. Very well done video with simple but powerful advices. 🙏
Good guide. Love when he adds anecdotal evidence. He is the real deal
Very, very informative! I know a lot of work went to producing this very substantial video. Thank you very much.
I just finished my 3 day fast and was heavily contemplating extending it, but seeing as the returns diminish, I'm breaking it now (day 4).
I am doing my first 48 hr fast. I started with 5 days of OMAD, and at 40 hrs I am not even slightly hungry. The science works and the weight has been falling off. 22 lbs in a month. 👍
What is OMAD
@@JUFFAIR101 OMAD is one meal a day i think
I can’t believe this information is all free. Thanks man!
