    Justin "that´s a big mistake"

      My mistake, too. I had always tried tp sound so or so (not only by singing), and just recently I've realized that I should just let the voice go. Now I see Justin confirm that.

    This was actually a super helpful one - For new singers the idea of the "pretty" voice idea being a cause for the breathiness is really spot on; now I'm practising non-breathy singing. Thanks!

    • @NewYorkVocalCoaching
      @NewYorkVocalCoaching  7 лет назад +67

      It could be you are using air from the upper part of your lungs instead of letting a small stream of air come from the lower area. It also has to do with where the air is being placed once it moves over the cords, how the internal chamber is positioned. And in reality, some people have softer voices than others, but it can be improved with proper training. Do you have a vocal coach now?

    • @LuneLuan

      RCuteR hmm I always wondered whether it was my deep voice that was causing my voice to sound weak but I guess this problem can happen to anyone since you suffer from it too.

    I think this video has clarified or helped me understand my speaking voice. When i speak people don't understand. They tell me i speak very low. Even when i think i am loud they don't hear me properly. While singing i had the same problem of breathiness.
    The three points mentioned here hit right to the point and i am gonna try working on these points. Thanks Justin.

    Hey thank you for this video, I find it really educational! One psychological thing for me is i grew up really introverted, and shy, so i try to speak softly/whisper and it psychologically made me breathy even when speaking lol. I haven't gotten arrested yet tho :D

    Wow, that "Hey there" excercise was really great! I have a really girly baby-voice (on the phone people think I'm 8, but I'm 20 years old...) and I hope to strengthen my singing voice with excercises like that^^

  • @HossSingRound
    @HossSingRound 12 лет назад +3

    Great perspectives. Thanks to this video, I've now come to think of singing as "speaking on pitch" and filling in the spaces with sustained vowels. For me this makes singing simpler. I find that when I come to a trouble spot in a song I can work through it if I just "speak a few words on pitch" rather than "singing" them. But beyond that, I was surprised to find that thinking of it this way also makes the singing much more expressive. The emotion just comes natural in speech.

    Thank you for all the work you put into these videos! I had a hard time really feeling confident about singing because it was weak and I felt very limited in range. After going through the "Hey There" exercise I tried singing a song that has always been difficult for me to feel comfortable singing and it worked! I had to put a bit more effort into it, but it worked nevertheless. I'm sure with practice it'll be more natural.

    Justin thank you sooooo much for sharing you knowledge and talent and teaching skills with us. I have learned in these 7 episodes, more than in taking private singing lessons for over a year. I'm looking forward to enjoying all the future episodes that you have generously offered to us.Question: Is there a preferred "set" progression in learning to sing? i.e. it's preferable to learn "A" before "B" etc.? Many thanks again.

    This and the tone deaf video really makes me feel better. I knew when I as off pitch but I didn't know how to get on pitch so I thought I was tone deaf. On top of that I always thought "but my singing voice is ugly" so I tried to make it prettier. This only made me think I couldn't sing. I'm going to try singing at home till I can get confident enough for lessons.

    Yeah I have to try and get a breathy tone. I needed it to cover a Wallflowers song, Jakob Dylan has that underlying breathy sound to his voice. I am unsure why I ended up here in the suggestion list but I watched it anyway. I figured it is best ot get advice even if you have heard it before so you don't forget pointers and how you can use the voice.
    Side Note: Anyone attempting to cover a Wallflowers song will need the breathy sound, distortion (slight) and compression (slight) and you pretty much get Jakob Dylan's style. This also encompasses David Gilmour in Pink Floyd songs as his vocals are somewhat similar with the breathy sound being slighter.
    It can be a very fun technique to use especially when it comes out not sounding like you.
    A very very good song to try to control it is "For the good times" the Al Green version. Al Green uses an array of vocal techniques in the way he sings, your gonna be using head voice, chest voice, mixed voice, breathy tones, compression, distortion and clean. Lots of stuff unpacked from one song. Al Green is certainly one of the greats and thats why, aside from the soul and feeling, he just had a huge repertoire of tones and techniques he used. Making him a good artist to cover to help understand how you want to use those techniques.

    I think the greatest singing voice is combining a little breathiness with a clear punching pitch from your core. It's the most difficult to sustain and sing that way but because I have a cleft chest and my chest caves in on itself and pushes on my diaphragm, I don't have good breath control and air always escapes out on me when I'm not looking. But I like the sound when it is a little breathy way more than just the punching pitch sound alone. It's the hardest way to sing I think.

    My ENT doctor prohibited me from singing, because I was keeping on damaging my voice no matter how less time I sing. And that happens to me if I talk too loudly or for long...he just told me I have a delicate voice

    Hey, you’re really good. I was trying to do these Zee’s from this other video: was not working out! 😂 The speaking thing...wow did that make a difference! I always felt like I have a weak voice (and I probably do), but all I want is to learn how to sing along to music and not scare myself in the shower!🚿 🛀 😆 So thanks and I’ll keep watching you and see if I’m able no make any type of “pleasant sounding sounds” 😅come out of my vocal cords...
