  • This week, The Doctors Bjorkman dive into all the details of the first 2 days of a baby's life and what special care they receive in the hospital to make sure they are healthy and to help prevent some potentially life-threatening diseases. They talk about all of the major milestones to expect to see from baby and all of the important steps that need to happen before baby can be discharged safely home. Also, be sure to stick around to the end of the video where they discuss some more controversial topics like Vitamin K injections, Hepatitis B vaccines, and antibiotic eye ointment.

      Congrats mama. Feeling those little kicks totally makes it more real. Wait till you can see him/her moving through your belly! It’s just wild!! So glad the videos are helpful. Pregnancy is certainly a roller coaster of emotions and some anxiety is normal-but if you ever feel like it’s getting out of control, talk with your OB about it!!

    The fact that delayed cord cutting is now becoming standard is good news. When I gave birth the first time in 2011 I asked for delayed cord clamping/cutting and the doctor treated me like I was crazy. Basically told me I would bleed out and possibly die if they delayed cord cutting.

    I do not think my babies had blood screenings that had results reported much later. But they did require a hearing test done at the hospital before we left - this was not mentioned as one of the tests in this video.
    Also, we could choose to do any vaccinations at our pediatricians after going home instead of in hospital.

    I just found your videos so I'm sorry if you have already done one about this but you should do a video on the first few days when baby needs extra help (so when it's not a normal experience). I had high BP during pregnancy so my obgyn chose to induce me at 35 weeks. I needed up having to have a C-section because my baby was in distress once the pitocin was started and was born at 3lbs 15oz. I wasn't able to hold him for 30+ hours and we spent 6 days in the hospital. I would love to see a video on what a pediatrician wants a parent to know in this kind of situation.

    How sad that doctors have been putting babies at a disadvantage for many years by routinely rushing cord clamping and only now this practice is finally going by the wayside.. doctors are seen as the experts but they aren’t always right about everything. In this case, midwives and the natural birth movement were right all along to not rush cord clamping. Goes to show that both midwives and doctors can learn from each other if they keep an open mind.

    • @small_sand_pile7923

      It can be transferred through bodily fluids. It is not just an STD-altough that is a common form of the disease transmission. The mother could have it or be a carrier, and there could also be some mess that leaves the baby exposed to it without caregivers being aware. Hope this helps.

    The vaccination for hepatitis seems more prudent where I live (Latvia).
    In the third trimester the mother is tested for HBsAg and if the test is positive or is not done (e.g. premature birth) only then the shot is done. Because, where else would the infant get the hepatitis during the first year of life, if not from breast milk?

    I always thought I’d be exited and I would be but my wife is very childish and immature I wasn’t ready to have kids with her even though I wanted them but she is so childish I jumped right into protective mode I wanted to take care of both of them and help them and have them both healthy and happy but being new I was researching all the things related to taking care of the baby and her but every time I tell her my findings from multiple doctors and even my sister In law who is a OG/BYN she instantly gets mad and argues and refuses to listen I’m trying to be the good helpful guy but all I get is anger and bs even before the pregnancy it’s just worst now idk what to do I’m trying to help her and my child but I’m almost like I don’t even wanna try she’s just a angry person who don’t even give things a chance and has a unrealistic view on things I think I would have actually been excited about kids if it wasn’t for her childish behavior I’d actually be excited but I’m not anymore please any advice would help

      It honestly seems doctors stay away from the topic which is truly unfortunate. As though they might be shunned for speaking out or diverting from their training. I enjoy their videos so far and hope that they might speak on this as people, parents and from their observations/experience with women and children rather than from the “medical system’s” perspective/“training”

      Hep b vacc lasts for years. It goes way beyond the newborn stage.
      As they age and are exposed to other children and adults, you can see why it's important. Not every person they encounter is going to be "clean". Children are especially gross becuse they touch everything and stick crap in their mouth and share it with others. Hep b is transmitted by ANY bodily fluid.

    Hi! 😊I just recently found your channel and I love how educational your videos are! I’m a first time mom currently 28 weeks pregnant and planning on exclusively breastfeeding and pumping I’m really considering getting baby vaccinated with the vitamin K shot when she’s born. My question is that if she gets the vitamin K shot at the hospital do I still have to give her vitamin K supplements daily while I breast feed?

    • @TheDoctorsBjorkman
      @TheDoctorsBjorkman  3 года назад +3

      Congrats on your pregnancy and being in the third trimester! You are on the homestretch. I love that you are going to try to exclusively breastfeed and pump! I’ve heard it is hard but so so worth it!!
      To answer your question-if she gets the vitamin K shot in the hospital, you do NOT have to supplement that daily while breastfeeding! It’s a one time shot in the hospital and they don’t need it again.
      If you are exclusively breastfeeding, it is recommended you supplement either you or the baby every day with Vitamin D. You can give the baby 400IU daily (it comes in a liquid form and you use a dropper) OR you can take large dose of vitamin D yourself-6400IU daily and that is enough for you to pass it to the baby via breast milk!
      Hope that is helpful. We will definitely be doing some videos about breastfeeding once our little one arrives and we have some “real life experiences” to share!!

      I have another question will you be doing a follow up video on the COVID 19 vaccine during pregnancy? Now that their are more studies on this topic? I guess my main question here would be is there any long term effects for baby or mom by getting this vaccine? And I’ve also heard of people having still births from having the COVID vaccine. Is that even possible?

      @@Marthiux92 With all do respect, how would anyone doctor or not know if there are any long term effects from the covid19 vaccine? That goes for anyone... Including pregnant women, children or adults.
      The vaccine has not been around long enough to know. To date its been around for a tiny bit over 1 year. So, that's all anyone would have data for.

Do you both think hospitals could delay cord clamping until the placenta naturally comes out (delayed by an hour possibly) Also can the apgar test be done quickly on the moms stomach? If the Apgar test score is low can the pediatrician do what is needed on mom and not away from her?

You should really make them clear that you don't want to be seperated with your baby. Midwifes for homebirths on the other hand test the baby while your're still bonding :)

      Never put your baby in the car seat while still in a sleeping bag.
      Out of the sleeping bag, into the seat, do up the seatbelt, ensuring straps are straight, flat, firm fitting, not twisted. Then you can tuck in a blanket over the top.

    I definitely think all newborns need that CHD screen. If they had done something like that when I was born almost 49 years ago, they would've caught my CHD instead of us waiting until I was 2 years old to figure out something was wrong and actually not knowing WHAT the problem was until I was cut open for heart surgery when I was 9 in what turned out to be a severe problem they thought was initially something small. Be glad technology has gotten to the point it has so medical professionals can know ahead of time what to expect in case there is a problem. Back then, my mom didn't even have an ultrasound when she was pregnant! When I was pregnant with my miracle baby, he had a fetal ECHO to see if there was a problem before I gave birth. Then he had another one when he was 2 to find out his heart is normal even if he has an incidental murmur. If he had something wrong, we would've caught it and had proper interventions in place, including changing the hospital I gave birth at so we would have pediatric cardiologists just in case.

    • @TheDoctorsBjorkman
      @TheDoctorsBjorkman  3 года назад

      We are also so thankful for the advances in medicine and screening, as it can prevent a lot of heartache and difficult medical treatments. It is amazing that pretty simple technology can let us know ahead of time babies could have a major issue. It sounds like you had AWESOME care for your son, and that you truly appreciate it--having been through all of the surgery for your heart yourself. Glad to hear you BOTH are doing okay.

      I live in New Zealand and we only use midwives for birthing (unless quite rare complications). I think it's great. But also, I know that in the US they are not required to have standardized training which is a problem! Also think obstetricians and pediatricians have such a valuable knowledge base to supplement midwifery. I personally have never seen either. Our family doctors do the standard gynaecological and childhood examinations and can refer if needed.
