Reversible Round Basket - DIY Tutorial

- In this video tutorial I teach you how to make a reversible round fabric basket. These little organizers are so cute and easy to make! I have a bunch of these around my studio for things like Wonder Clips, chalk, thimbles, spools of hand quilting thread and my favorite is to use it as a thread catcher right by my sewing machine!

One of many things i Love about ur videos is that you don't take forever to get to the project. A lot of youtube videos i watch, they take forever to get to the project, some just ramble on n on n on n repeat themselves soo much. With those i usually turn them off n move on....you do a great job explaining n demonstrating the project. Thank you soo much

Thanks for another great tutorial! Sometimes I watch DIY tutorials just to be amazed, but they don't really tell me how to do it. You give detailed, clear explanations of what to do and WHY you do it that way. It really helps me to get mine like yours, or to modify mine without ruining the end result.

I saw you use it for your clips in another video and I love the idea! I think I will try it with a string in the binding to have a closable pouch for the clips. Using it as a thread cather? Great idea! Thanks a lot for the inspiration (and for showing how to do it)!

I actually do the exact same thing with the loose threads I put them all over the place, especially letting them go on the floor. I just have interfacing will that do.
Thank you so much for your lovely tutorials I love making so many of the things that you demonstrate. Can I make just one observation I am surprised that you use a knot to start off your sewing by hand. I was taught that you place your needle into the fabric leaving a little tail and then do 3 little stitches tucking the tail under as you go. I was told that knots are only for tacking purposes as if you use them for permanment sewing the will eventually come undone. however, I will add that was ove 60 years ago, maybe things have changed this is not a criticism but an observation.

I love these! As always a great tutorial! I can see cranking these out and then watching tv & doing the hand sewing. Seems to me there is another element to add...a lid. Could use the same technique and either gather the lid (not gathered quite as much to fit over the basket) then add a piece of ribbon as the "hinge". Think I will try this project this winter! Good holiday gifts. :-)

Vanessa great tutorial. I have almost finished mine, just have to bind. Wondering did you cut you binding on the bias? For my size I used the lid from a cookie tin almost 12". Love it. Thanks and Happy New Year Val in Canada.
+Val Clements I didn't. I cut it on the crosswise grain which has more stretch than the lengthwise grain but less than the bias. It worked fine. But you can cut on the bias if you want. Either will work. :)
These are great. I'm going to make a bunch to use for serving dry foods at picnics, because they are much lighter than bowls and they fold flat.

These would/will make fantastic presents! Make a cute little basket, fill it with goodies!
Instead of throwing those thread ends, save them and when the birds start nesting in the spring put those threads out for nesting material.
I have a Juki Exceed sewing machine also, but I didn't realize there is an automatic 1/4" seam allowance setting. Tell me more.

Also your mini ironing board is that the same as mine. I got mine off amazon and it was expensive but it's folded and also you open it up and it has sandpaper one side and a cutting board the other.

Like the idea but for the binding. Might try but use fold-over elastic for the finish.

I've never seen these before. How cute! Looks pretty easy, but I definitely did not inherit my mom's sewing gene, but I did keep her machine when she died. She made almost all my dresses for high school dances and she made my wedding dress. I'm lucky to be able to see a hem...lol

So cute, and I'm scrap busting, therefore going to make these. I use an Olfa circle cutter now, and I love the gathering method. Thanks Vanessa... and P.S.....this was my absolute favourite bowl to make...I was SO happy with it! I have never used that gathering method before, but it was so easy and effective. ❤

I love this basket...but how do you know how "long" to make the piece for the binding...depending on what size bowl you make? That's a little confusing....thank-you!! :)

How do you know how long to make finding how do you measure it
Love this! Made one for my sister as a ‘candy dish’ for her desk top at work. When I gather a small project, I pull our some extra thread from behind, take a zigzag stitch, then bring the threads from behind forward and zigzag over that. Same concept if you don’t have yarn are wire available. Thanks for sharing all your projects!
I made one. posted it on instagram. lol. so fun. I discovered it looked like a hat. I put it on an American girl doll and she looked like a l adybug queen. happy accident. I used,an 8 and a half inch plate. and ladybug material I purchased at hobby lobby. And lady bug ribbon. how cute! this was a fun break in between my quilting. thanks

Hi Crafty Gemini; Hi I just post to say can you do this craft with kite cord/string; just asking. I made two of these reversible basket & I used yarn to gather it instead but I want to try it. out using string. I look forward to your reply a.s.a.p.tafs.
I finally got around to making a couple of these. I went with the 8 inch size, and I did them by hand. I had a lot of waiting around to do at an appointment, so I wanted a nice distraction to keep me busy. Very happy with the way they came out, now I'm planning to make more, next time I'll do them on my sewing machine. Thanks for a nice tutorial, and a useful project. Xx

I actually started from 8 1/2 inch squares which I quilted first, then I cut the circle (using a plate as a template). I used dental floss for the gathering, as you suggested (fun idea). The difficult bit for me was sewing on the binding on the machine (12:40) so there was some unpicking involved (because the zig-zag stitches still showed at first) but it was worth it. Keep up the good work!
I love these baskets. I had extra quilted fabric and made two baskets to go along with a 3 piece (assorted sizes) set of round hot pads for a gift. My daughter was so happy with her new set. The baskets were the biggest hit !!!

Love your method of teaching and your step-by-step instructions. The one thing I tend to use the baskets for (as well as the bowl cozies) is setting my raw eggs into them before I crack the eggs, so the eggs will not roll off the counter and hit the floor.
