New fear unlocked: office chairs
Hypothetically, we should probably try to create adjustable chairs that have zero chance of explosion. We've gotten too comfortable with various forms of "acceptable risk," particularly when the risks are largely unknown.
Edit: OK, this is leading to more debate and discussion than I had anticipated. Luckily, my thoughts on the subject have been evolving.
Most of us live in post-industrial societies. Several terrible things have been mitigated, thanks to things like modern medicine, while several other terrible things have become more common, as a result of society being completely reshaped around modern technology. Some of these things are "necessary evils," to an extent, but they can probably be mitigated/lowered, and some of these things are sort of pointless or odd. Chairs with smoothly adjustable height are one of the more pointless and odd things.
It seems as though this is something that was adopted en masse due to their sheer convenience, all while most people are completely unaware of the small chance of explosion if the chairs are poorly manufactured or significantly worn down. A lot of modern society works this way: people are just thrown into accepting certain things without fully being aware of them. In the case of many modern nations, it's capitalism and the industrial revolution that have driven this. Hypothetically several other things could drive this, since a lot of the stuff that people have just adopted come from the industrial revolution and the evolution of various products. Capitalism is probably not an absolutely necessary ingredient in this recipe.
While chairs with smoothly adjustable height (via gas cylinders) are not the best example of weird things that the public should have put more thought into or been given more knowledge on, since the odds of explosion are slim, they still represent an example of an odd risk that does not need to exist.
Things like the original widespread use of lead is a better example of things that should not have been done, despite the convenience of lead. Adjustable height gas cylinders are much lower in this list of things, but they're still technically there to some extent, mostly because they're far from being a "necessary evil" of modern society.
Inversely, maybe the modern world has become so safe in most situations that smaller and smaller risks become unacceptable.
@@danielyoung_
Quite possible, though exploding gas cylinders that control chair height are more of an odd risk that has a small chance of happening under normal circumstances than a "small risk."
The Herman Miller Aeron, Steelcase leap, and Allsteel Acuity are very safe and have no chance of explosion at all but, they’ll will have a chance that you will go broke because they are expensive.
@@davidperry4013 You'd have better luck getting an Aeron from a liquidation sale, less stress on the wallet
@@MrNobody47710 These gas cylinders usually don't explode, there is just a hissing sound and the chair would not adjust any longer. They don't explode in a self destructive way. It seems that chair in the video had some sort of defective cylinder combined with weak underplate or whatever it had.
I see my chair has about 2mm of steel plate above the cylinder a steel bar (for regulation there) and 2 inches of some wood plastic composite, above that is the soft part... no way this thing is going to brake. And by the way my chair is from China and is relatively cheap but is sturdy and I usually buy office chairs from that brand it's about $150. Yes they break after a few years of use but in a non destructive way. (and only 1 of them had a gas cylinder problem... and it just puffed and stopped working it didn't explode or do anything else at all)
I remember playing Goldeneye in the N64. Always found funny how shooting chairs would make them explode... but they knew something that we ignored back then. Now a new fear has been unlocked.

Instead of encouraging people to go out and check their chairs and even buy new ones I think it would've been better to mention there have only ever been 3 of these office chair incidents, and you covered all 3.
Furthermore all 3 of these accidents, which like I said have been the only office chair explosion incidents, all happened in China. The most recent one happening all the way back in 2013, with no further incidents happening since, only one of the 3 resulting in death, and 2 of the 3 incidents taking place less than a year apart from each other.

Tbh. I wouldn't blame you if you put some affiliate links in the description for office chairs. I just bought 3 chairs, for myself, my sister and my mother on Amazon. Each for about 120 EUR with thickened explosion-proof steel chassis (Double Protection in the description). It's a simple office chair which can handle 150 KG and the spring was tested and could withhold a pressure test of 1136KG. I was even thinking about an chair without an pressure spring. Why do we even need a pressure spring? I would be fine with manually adjusting the chair (mechanically)...
Whats the name of the chair
@@_____glitch I bought it from Amazon Germany and it's called "Daccormax Bürostuhl Ergonomisch". The product ID/ASIN is "B0B5XTCST7". I'm sure there are other chairs with similar features.
Many don't state those kind of features, I don't know why, maybe because it's expected or a standard thing? 🤔 I just felt better reading about those features in the product description. Even when the risks are probably slim in countries where you have saftey regulations, every once in a while there is a lucky person which wins the lottery.
Its the most affordable thing with the most minimal of materials and mass productable so... As well as knowledge unlike expandable tables that really required non of it
all that the extra "protection" means is the explosion will be bigger when it happens
I reinforced my Grospol Ergofix office chairs (at home and at work) with 2 mm thick steel sheets, to protect the plastic seat from breaking under my considerable weight by spreading the pressure over a large area of the steel sheet instead of six small areas of the tilt mechanism base plate. I hope it will protect me in (unlikely) case of such explosion.

This video honestly changed my course of life. I literally have to replace every single office chair with a cheap monoblock chair so I could be comfortable doing stuff.
Just dont buy gaming chairs from China. Monoblock chairs legs can give way too and is too slipppery if you are like me you likes to put my foot up.
The funny thing about this: 99% of those chairs are always just set to desired height and never changed. Which begs the question: do we really need this mechanism in first place. Why not chair that can be regulated by some screws, just set to desired height and don't worry about it, like in old days
It's a comfort thing, even if you never change the height, it is a plus in comfort. You sit down, and the chair is going a bit down so that you don't have the feeling that you're sitting down on something like a kitchen chair. I needed to use one of our really comfortable dining room chairs for two weeks, because my office chair was being replaced. I was so happy when the two weeks were over...
@@Foxhunter_DE I have my chair at the lowest setting, so no difference for me. Also I feel it rather less comfortable to move slightly up or down when correcting my posture etc. So what's left is the small benefit of dumping the force when sitting down, it really isn't something to brag about unless you really do a lot of sit down/stand up routine
@@SuperBlackReality You should do at least every 20-30 minuets, to save your back ;) That's also the reason why i won't go to the lowest setting with my chair.
I agree. Sometimes having much less complicated features, it's less costly plus doesn't involve dangers like this.
In the old days, most office chairs had a simpler mechanism to be raised or lowered using a sturdy thick threaded metal bar instead of a gas cylinder, to adjust it, you would just rotate your chair around until it reached the desired height.
i always hated that mechanism in office chairs. not because it could fail and explode, first time i hear of it, but because it eventually weakens and starts sliding down on its own and i have to keep adjusting the chair height. this is why when i could afford it, i got a custom made one that doesn't have it and is set to my desired height permanently.
Maybe theres something wrong with yours or something, I've a relatively cheap office chair that I've used for over the past 18 years and its just fine.
That is a good sign because it slowly losing pressure instead of fail and explode you can keep using it until it cannot lift you up any more.
get an older mechanical design, it's just solid steel and does not lose pressure or degrade over time, and has no lethal failure mode
I had an opposite problem when the chair randomly stratted to go up even when in a locked posotion
@@that0nedegeneratethat's not good. You want it to leak pressure so it isn't building up inside the chair.
When I was a student in college my class had the task of putting chairs together. One of my fellow students accidentally triggered the gas cylinder while putting his chair together and it expanded to its full length striking his thumb in the process. He ended up finding out that it had broken his thumb as a result. So even putting one of these together can be dangerous if you aren't careful.

Nice explanation, but another reason of spontaneous combustion is not mentioned. You said in the video, that there is some oil lubricating the piston. If the piston is filled with air, which contains oxygen, cheaper thinner oils can combust on their own, just like in a diesel engine. This effect also appears on air guns, giving them more energy than intended, if there is too much lubrication.
As a person who has had plenty of office chairs break beneath me, I'm counting my lucky stars. Though in most cases its been a leg or so breaking off. I always thought it was weird that there was only a single piston to carry the load when many load bearing objects use multiple piston set-ups; maybe its time to change an industry standard.

Sitting on my office chair while watching this video is the equivalent of listening to horror stories of real serial killers out in the woods at night.
You're always hoping nothing would happen.
It's like watching jaws while floating in a bay
Why are you not working lol
@reannapeters683 ppl have in home offices, could be on break, could have an office chair as a desk chair, etc
I was sitting in a $30 dollar office chair that’s pretty good for the price that I got from Amazon while watching this and moved over to a normal chair with legs not even halfway through the video. Idk what to do now, what do I use to game at my desk instead of an office or gaming chair that can be adjusted to the right height?
im in a office chair rn while watching to
My boss accidentally exploded two office chairs on the same day. These chairs had really massive springs in them that, when the chairs exploded, they were shot like ricocheting projectiles. Luckily though, nowhere near as this explosive. The office had been undergoing renovation for a couple months and, watching this video, they probably cheaped out on the office chairs.
What
HOW??
I just bought a new desk chair. I didn't even know what type of desk chair I had before I watched this. Tha ks brew, you're a jewel. 😉

I know, I'll never use those again... Kind of disturbing when I remember I used to play a lot with those chairs...

It didn't do anything in those 5 years.
Thats enough internet for tonight 😢
Normally I'm not one for getting caught up in a fear of something that has such a low chance of happening (after all, every time you get in a car you have a chance of dying - probably more likely to get in a car accident than have an office chair explode when you sit down) but I still crawled off my chair and peeked underneath to make sure it had a label on it. XD The prior owners of our home left it here so I wasn't exactly sure if it was trustworthy.
I had to replace my office chair with one that didn't have that cylinder because of this video.

As someone who spends many hours a week sitting in a gaming chair thought this video was gonna take a different turn. Didn't know chairs could explode at all.
what did you think was gonna happen
Unless your chair cost $15, you don't have to worry too much, but if it is a cheap one, you should invest into more expensive ones. Also gaming chairs are usually cheaply made but overpriced, and also less comfortable than actual office chair, so I can recommend you buy an actual office chair.
Idea: use wooden chairs for gaming. If you bored of the wooden chair, just decorate it!
Wow! Scary. I always worried about the piston rod piercing through the seat, but never realized there was a possibility of explosion!
that could never happen now cause of regulations. plus those stories are years old things are different.
@@mcdonaldsworkerrazorthank you . I was scared cause of this 😂
I'm sitting in an office chair quite literally the quintessential office chair. The longer I watch this the more the pressure beneath me grows.
same
Every time my wife has gotten a chair it has ended in disaster. At one point she was on her computer playing game and there was this loud snap and it was the back of the chair breaking and she was hanging upside down. Another time it completely fell apart and she fell sideways. I have this ancient chair that I have removed the back in the arms of that was handed down to me from the last three or four generations of my family, it's basically a big heavy duty stool that I sit in, so while my wife is going through all these different chairs that are attempting to assassinate her I just live on a solid piece of wood that's never let me down(literally).
Seems like she might need to lose some weight.
Okay, I'm gonna pick a new chair soon
“what makes an office chair.. go boom” i dont know why that was so funny 😭
Moral of the story: If you're buying a gaming chair, get a quality one or don't get one at all unless you want to risk express colonoscopy via metal rod.
This is why I'm glad that I have an old steelcase chair. It has a pin that I have to manually tighten after spinning the chair to a specific height. I got it from a barn sale but I know they can be found on ebay just type vintage steelcase chair.
Why thank you.
Yeah I think my old buddy is going to be retired and this is just the replacement I was thinking of. Thank you!
so if it breaks, you start spinning in circles?
@@s-o-u-p6095 When you fall off you might get some scabs and stuff from friction but…not too many injuries unless it goes too fast.
Thanks I'm checking now. I just pitched mine into the backyard and told my husband to use it for target practice at the range.
Brew has given me a new phobia of gas powered office chairs.

I’m honestly never sitting on my chair again
yet another day being made aware of the tiny, mundane details in my life that could have so much more impact than I ever realized. chair goes up and down, nice! but wait... how does it do that exactly? they WHAT
and the way it degrades over time aaaaaaaah
pressure is so scary hdbdjsbs
anything can be scary if utilized incorrectly
I had a chair for over 15 years and it did degrade over time. I assume it just leaked all of the gas somehow because it would no longer rise up. It was just stuck in the lowest position. Still used it for several more years because it was comfortable and I'd always used it in the lowest position most of the time anyway. I sat in it so much I half expected the thing to fall apart on me, had to tighten some bolts for the arms a couple of times and apply some lubricant to the tilt that bends forward and back when you lean in it. Funny thing is I already knew about the chairs exploding thing long before this video and it crossed my mind every time I sit in it/one. Still have the chair somewhere but since got a new one. Old chair was purchased at an office depot, new one from Amazon a year ago.
As someone who got a “gaming” chair from a dumpster, I’m a little surprised there hasn’t been a rod where the sun don’t shine.

im sure it’s just because the chairs are made in china i think if it’s reliable and from good trusted companies then it’s okay
By the way, this is especially paranoia-enducing in offices. Maybe at home you can eventually save up to replace your chair, but at workplaces, where they're also notorious for cutting costs and using old furniture and chairs for each newer employee, there's almost nothing you can do about this unless you're the boss or something.
And with my country being flooded with "made in china" stuff for years now, I am now EXTREMELY scared, cause this seems like one of the most painful ways to go😐
