      I'm a doctor. I usually treat paronychia with nail extraction to let the pus drained out and gives some room for new and healthy nail to grow. In some cases, the pus seeps through the nail bed so you can never be too careful. Also I give them antibiotics and pain reliever after that. Simple case of paronychia doesn't need a big surgery, but simple antibiotics usually won't cut it because the source of infection is still there.

      Speaking as more of a devil's advocate here, this video doesn't seem to explain why the specific act of _biting_ your nails is so dangerous. I understand that the danger comes from infection, and that the infection comes from the contamination of open wounds around the fingertips. But couldn't the same thing also happen if you were to simply _cut_ your nails a little too short, or if you were to somehow get a hangnail or something? I mean, unless it has something to do with the mouth transmitting bacteria to the fingertips or something (which isn't really made clear in this video), then I don't see why biting your nails is so dangerous, as opposed to getting some _other_ kind of wound or cut around your fingertips.

    I actually got hospitalized because of an infected finger from nail biting as a kid. I thought nothing of it back then, Every once in a while I'd have to drain the pus out and it hurt a lot, but I didn't think for a second that my life could have been at risk.
    It took me another 10 years to finally break my nail biting habit. Thankfully it didn't take another serious hospital visit. I just started clipping, filing, and buffing my nails so they look good.
    That made me not want to ruin them by biting them, and when I put them in my mouth i would feel the smooth surface and that would remind me not to bite it.
    Now I frequently find myself flabbergasted at how fast my nails grow. You never notice when you bite them because they don't get a chance, but they get long so quickly.

      As weird as it sounds it makes me feel good when a woman compliments that about me since I tried so hard to get rid of that terrible habit. I also notice that my nails grow about 2x quicker than average people.

    I bit my nails for 2 decades and only recently stopped. I always said it didn't bother me that much and it didn't. Until I saw my nails in the photos of our engagement rings.
    Still I found it hard to break the lifelong habit.
    What started it was simply being away hiking for 2 weeks. I was too busy and tired to be bored and focus on them. All of a sudden noticed they looked better than in years.
    I then bought myself for the first time ever a nail set and rather than picking at them and continuing the cycle I took pride in keeping them tidy. It was just a change of perspective. A healthy positive habit rather than a destructive negative habit. It took no more effort. Once they start looking good it becomes self fulfilling.
    We are getting married in 2 days and I just had my first ever nail appointment to have them looking their best for the day. Proud of myself.

      @@Nguvuzauniverse. honestly, my best advice it is to have a nail set with you at all times and learn how to use it. Anytime you look at your nails and want to bite or pick at them, get your set and clean and tidy them. It's the same focus and habit on your nails only you won't be destructive. It will take weeks, maybe even a month but not forever until you see improvement. That was part of what used to hold me back too. I thought they were too far gone. I thought it would take 6 months for them to look anywhere close to normal again. I thought they'd grow in weird. They didn't. Honestly. 2 - 3 weeks of being consistent was enough to see improvement and then I WANTED to take care of them. There were little lapses too. The bad habit returned. But then I'd focus on the good nails and promise not to mess them up. I'd have 5 good nails and 5 beaten up nails. A week later. 7 good and 3 bad. Before long I was proud of them all and the new good habit had formed.

    7 years ago, my older brother experienced this too. He, too, had a habit of biting his nails and I’d remember my mom constantly reminding him to stop for years. He finally stopped when the green spot got swollen. He got admitted in the hospital for it and he received surgery by removing a part of his finger’s tissue. He learned his lesson the hard way and ever since then, he’s stopped the habit.

      Mine have never gotten infected, but after trying every kind of behavioral modification (my mother used to do things like threaten to dip my bloody fingertips in hot pepper juice) I finally got on anti-anxiety meds and... i haven't *completely* stopped, but after 16 years my nail-biting is *so* much better.
      It also keeps improving, because after so many years of biting them, plus vitamin deficiencies, my nails were weak and broke/tore constantly. Now my doctor has me taking vitamins, and the less I bite, the stronger my nails get, so there's less of them tearing ragged and me feeling like I have to bite them. I also carry files all the time, so I can file them instead of biting them.

    I was a nail biter all my life until I turned 21 (I'm 22 now). I never really bit the proximal fold i.e. "cuticle" that much, mostly just the nail plate. I always wanted long nails. One day I noticed that my nails kinda looked like they had grown and I got the courage to stop biting them to grow them out. I started then manicuring my nails and taking care of them, trimming off hangnails and filing my nails instead of biting them if I got an urge. This all motivated me to continue not biting my nails. I now no longer bite my nails and I use press on nails now as it's less work, but I grew my natural nails to around 2 inches long before trimming them down for a new job lol.

Every time you catching yourself indulging or wanting to indulge in a bad habit you pull back on the band and let it go, snapping back hard against your skin. The pain from this trains your brain to not want to perform whichever bad habit it is you are working on. I actually got one of those exact bright green finger infections when I was a teenaged nail-biter, it's what made me stop for good, haven't done it since. I caught it really early and was able to get rid of it with ointment before it spread to any dangerous level, but it was still scary to see a bright green wound.

    I used to bite my nails at 10 or 11. This girl in my class had such long nails and I was impressed, and I decided to quit biting my nails. Now during that time of trying to not bite my nails, I didn’t fully stopped biting them, cause the urge to bite was still hanging, so I bit my nails every now and than, but I started to bite less and less. It didn’t take long, probably like a month maybe. I think ever since I stopped biting my nails I grew germaphobic and hated biting my nails or putting my fingers in my mouth.

    It's important to emphasize that the introduction of bacteria into the nailbeds comes fom the mouth, one of the dirtiest areas of the body; it is the beginningof the GI tract, after all (and think about what's at the other end 😳).

    I used to bite my nails a lot, mainly from stress. While I’m still stressed, I was able to stop because of acrylics actually. I absolutely hated those things but for some reason they’re the only thing that worked.

    I'm a nail biter, and I've had the pus under the skin a fair few times. Good thing my mom is a nurse and she taught me at a young age how to take care of it when they form. I haven't had one of those in years though.

      Same. I've been a nail biter since childhood. Anxiety at its worst. As an adult, I'm 57, I go through spells of biting them and not biting them. I'm also a chronic hand washer from having worked in the medical field for over 20 years, so I haven't experienced an infection more than 3 or 4 times. Having worked as an MA for hand surgeons, I never saw a patient that had to have a partial or full amputation if a finger for being a nail biter. However, we certainly had our fair share of partial and full finger amputations from infections under acrylic nails. To put that into perspective, I counted 17 partial or full finger amputations in 4 years as a result of infection setting in under acrylic nails. Several patients we saw more than once for that reason. Some went to our foot surgeons for the same reason as we saw patients for their hands. Not once was it because anyone was a nail biter.

      Yet. I know the habit is hard to break so I won’t say to stop, but maybe try to remember to wash your hands and maybe use some neosporin/rubbing alcohol if you see blood. That’s how I avoid most infections myself.

    One positive thing about Covid, it got me to stop biting my nails because I was so worried about germs...so my OCD may have contributed to the biting, but it also got me to stop biting them. I still pick at them with my other fingers though.

    Steven's story (the third one) is one of the reasons why you don't have to go to the pharmacist when you think you might have something, but you have to go to your doctor!!! I always see people in line at the pharmacy, not only to buy something, but to get medical advise from the pharmacist and buy whan they advise and listen to their opinions. They go on and talk for so long to the pharmacist! Not only they keep the line, but they're not doing anything good for themselves by not going to a doctor! Go to your GP, people!!!

    I bit my nails until I was around 17, so I can speak from experience that it is an extremely difficult habit to shake.
    What I recommend to other nail-biters is as follows: instead of trying to unlearn the habit (which can be almost impossible), try replacing the habit with a less harmful one. What I did was I simply carried a nail clipper with me; whenever I felt the urge to take a bite, I would pull out the clipper instead and clip away. The benefit is multifold:
    1. you give your hands something to do, which helps with the anxiety;
    2. the clipper does a clean cut, which makes your fingers look nicer and reduces the chance of infection to near zero;
    3. you keep your nails short, so you've got less motive to bite or fiddle with it.
    Believe it or not, this simple method made me ditch the habit in a few months without much difficulty. Now almost a decade later, I no longer carry a clipper, but I do have one at each of the locations I would spend a lot of time at (e.g. one at the office, one at home, one at parents' place, etc.). The habit to put my hands close to my mouth isn't gone, but I'm no longer instinctively biting at my nails.
    P.s. funnily enough, biting my nails growing me up has made me somewhat of an expert in preventing and treating paronychia. Family and friends who know my history would ask me for advice when they catch an infection, which I'm not sure is an honour or an embarrassment 😅.
