Before she can fully realize what’s happening, a grandmother’s fish being cooked on the stove leads to her 11-year old grandson to collapse. The boy was seemingly affected by the delicious smell of the frying fish.
What do you do when just the scent of something can send you into a death spiral? How do you even begin to navigate the world when just a single bite of your favourite meal could kill you? Let’s get into it!

Me and my Brother are also highly allergic to fish protean ( my parents knew we had the allergy) as well but my parents absolutely loved fish, especially the worst one for us salmon. I can remember itching, coughing and having a very hard time breathing every time they cooked it but they always assumed because we would not end up eating it we where just making it up because of the bad smell. Flash forward 10 or so years I see this news article about this same boy and instantly sent it my dad as proof that My brother and I where in fact suffering.

Oh my, if my kids complained of feeling ill whenever a certain food was being prepared - - I would have had to see if it’s a real issue!! Thank goodness you two survived.
When my dad would return from fishing, there was one particular fish that would make me feel ill - - my stomach ached and I became nauseated. Now my parents lived (as kids) during the Big Depression (1930s), so either you ate what was cooked or went hungry. Yep, I went hungry. 🤢🤢

TF I live in Scotland, all medical care is completely free. You're probably aware of the NHS (UK free healthcare) but the English pay for prescription costs were as we don't. We get as much Epi pens as required. Should they expire then another will be provided gratis. Your health shouldnt be a choice cost so its one thing we do get right. We get loads wrong but...Probably the reason we are known as the sick man of Europe.
Growing up Ive always taken healthcare for granted as its just the way it is but getting older and having more exposure to the US and other western countries similar to us but with no free healthcare does really make me appreciate that lottery of being born where you're born. Scotland isn't without its problems... not at all but thankfully medical care isnt actually one of them....oh and guns. Although its knives here... Well used to be... not so bad now. 20 years ago, ye'd get stabbed just for walking into the wrong street.

I'm doing a pharmacy class, yesterday we had a real time lesson of poor health literacy. A girl was helping prepare a shellfish/seafood feast for a public holiday and knew she was allergic to shellfish but only thought that applied if she ate it, she came into our class to ask why she was getting an itchy rash up her arm after helping out, my tutor explained everything to her and gave her some fexofenadine as she was only having a mild reaction, and made sure the other tutor kept an eye on her as allergic reactions can go from annoying rash/itch to throat closing so fast. The worst irony is our EpiPens are medicine-free replicas for learning, if she did require one it wouldn't've been good.

My Mom grew up in Jamaica in a strict Christian household so she was never allowed to eat things like pork, shrimp, etc. She said that she used to see street vendors selling pepper shrimp and it smelled so good that she would look both ways to make sure nobody saw her calling over the vendor and buying a bag of pepper shrimp. She did that for years and then one day she had a shrimp stir fry in college and she threw up, her throat was tightening and she started sweating.

I had a reaction to amoxicillin as a child, along with two other antibiotics. After a while I just stopped mentioning it since I guess the other two are not used anymore or something? All I would know is I would start to get weird looks when I brought them up. Like the people had no idea what I was talking about. This wasn't even that long after I'd had them used on me! Maybe 20 years? 30 at most? At one point I remember getting curious and looking them up on the internet to see if they even existed or maybe my mother had remembered the names wrong. But it was so weird, always getting those looks, that eventually I just stopped mentioning my allergies, figuring they're not used anyway.
But amoxicillin is. And I'm pretty sure that at least once it was prescribed to me and I took it and was fine. But I can't remember for sure. A few years ago I finally wised up and started mentioning it as an allergy again (though I still don't bother mentioning the other two). Like, what was I doing, you know. "It's probably fine" is not worth even a small level of risk when there are plenty of other options.

This has happened to both my grand aunt and I. She put herself in the ICU on her 78th birthday by making her traditional oyster and macaroni casserole. She had acquired the allergy and didn't know it.
I was close to dying of dehydration once, as my body's reaction is to send the allergen to the exits as fast as possible; BOTH exits. It doesn't matter if it's fin fish or shell fish, although shellfish causes a reaction simply from touch or being around it while it's cooking. I acquired it when I was 18, in the middle of a culinary degree. I can't work in professional kitchen anymore because they need people who can do every task.
I ended up doing a paper on this while working on my second degree. If a guy is going to acquire a seafood allergy it's usually in late teens to early 20's; for women it is usually late 50's to early 70's, at which point the reaction is going to take a much greater toll on the body. These reactions often get more severe through repeated exposure, although some individuals have found a decrease in sensitivity if they can completely avoid the allergen for prolonged period (years) and slowly allow some exposure through things like vegan dashi and preparing vegan sushi rolls at home as there can be a very slight contamination in the seaweed, but usually not enough to trigger an immune response.

At the time, severe allergies were pretty rare, and a lot of people thought they were something made up for attention. Honestly having a lot of disabilities in the US sucks. I have to pay a bunch of money on creams (for Eczema) that I've already tried (to "prove" that I've tried alternatives, even though it's in my medical history) with each insurance change, in order for them to cover Dupixent, which is an injection that really helps keep my skin in a manageable condition with minimal flare-ups...also have asthma, but luckily that's improved a lot over the years. Medical expenses are high, and most insurances only foot a portion of the bill. It's kind of scary as an adult cuz if I can't stay on top of everything to avoid ending up in the hospital, I won't be able to afford living 🙃 I mean every country has their flaws I guess, but our healthcare system is so bad.

I went to an urgent care where they sort of blew me off. Two hours later I was in the ER with pre-heart attack symptoms. I spent three days in the hospital recovering. Sorry that you had to experience that. Sadly there are even a few medical people who think an allergy isn’t real. I’ve worked with a few, they don’t like that I challenge them on this issue. Over many years of scrubbing my hands and lower arms with Betadine scrub (hospital nurse), it started causing a strong burning sensation where ever I had used it. Then a rash would appear (sometimes swelling too). Back in the 1970s when I had my second baby, they forgot and used Betadine solution ..... uhmmmm ....... on a certain area before his birth - - the burning pain was AWFUL, I was lucky that there wasn’t much swelling.

I had the same reaction to robitusin. I was feeling a little ill. Took the adult dose. Throat immediately closed up. Couldn't breathe a lick. Ended up collapsing onto the floor. Finally was able to wheeze. Luckily before going unconscious. And I just lay there until the wheezing turned back into regular breathing. Ever since I will not touch robitussin, nyquil, or anything of the like. No idea which ingredient it was that triggered that reaction. In fact, now if I get ill, I'll take medicine to treat the disease but I try to avoid medicines who's only purpose is to treat a symptom. I can live w/a temporary annoying symptom. I can't live w/a closed airway.
It didn't help that i guzzle/gulp the dose because it tastes so awful i want to get it down quick. I might have avoided some trouble had I tested w/a sip first. Also, I've always hated such medicines, they seemed so unpleasant. But maybe some of that unpleasantness was a burgeoning allergy I didn't realize yet that I had. The thought had never occurred to me.
I can rule out alcohol as the problem ingredient, because I can drink w/out any such issue. But otherwise no idea what it was that triggered such a reaction. No foods or drinks or other medicines have done anything like that to me. And I'm not keen to experiment. I mention the story whenever a doc asks about any allergies I have, though it probably creates more questions than answers.

Here's what brew missed. We do have some inclination as to what causes most allergies to form. The majority of allergies are in response to proteins and amino acids. One of the leading theories is that pathogens the multi-generational evolving immune system has previously encountered have employed similar amino/protein structures to the things we have "allergies to", so our bodies over react to those things in our environment mistaking them for invaders. There are also certain man made chemicals, natural poisons, venoms, medical conditions, and pathogens that cause sensitivities similar to allergies, but slightly different in their mechanisms; that sometimes even correspond to other types of chemicals and factors. Like sunlight, water, or physical touch.

If you have a grandbaby with a life threatening allergy, that visits your house with any regularity, you shouldn't even have it in the house. Cross contamination is easy to do without a 2nd thought. Doing dishes together could contaminate the dishes (if you aren't thorough enough,) the sink and surrounding area, and the sponges and scrubbers.
It's just not worth it. Have your fish cooked elsewhere and delivered. Then use disposable dishes only and bag up the garbage separately and tie it off.
Also allergy drills could make doing the right thing quickly basically muscle memory. Who can think clearly when their child is possibly dying.
Also also go over the early signs with an allergic reaction and how to use their EpiPen and what to do next with them, family, and any friends/friends' parents that they spend time with.
Also also also make sure they always have their EpiPen and do random checks. Like "quick, where is your EpiPen."

Something to point out about epipens and other autoinjectors, the drug in them is relatively cheap, a vial costs about 50c. The injector, which allows easy self administration is the pricey part. The sick thing, the epipen is based on the atropen, an atropine auto injector developed at public expense for the us military as a counter to nerve agents. If the US decided to seize the intellectual property and allow anyone to produce it, or produce it in-house massively lowering the cost by upsetting the oligopoly, it could be argued they’re just taking back something they payed for in the first place.

While it wasn't serious (literally just lip swelling) It was super weird and to this day I cannot explain either instance.
