A BBC journalist living in London went home during his lunch break on a seemingly ordinary day. While he was heading back to work, a sudden, piercing pain struck his leg. Someone had bumped into his leg with the pointy end of their umbrella.
Within hours, the man was severely ill and had to be hospitalized. Doctors thought he might have blood poisoning, but he adamantly believed that someone intentionally harmed him. How could a stranger’s umbrella possibly be the cause? Let’s get into it!

I have been paranoid about bumping into people in public ever since I saw the episode of NCIS where this exact umbrella ricin situation happens. And also old-fashioned umbrella with pointy ends. Ricin is terrifying and I find it even more scary that you can just make it from beans.
EDIT: Forgot to mention I first saw that episode when I was like 9 years old so that kind of thing really sticks with you. I loved NCIS as a kid and some things really shaped my perception of the world…. Like being afraid of snipers.
2ND EDIT: Remembered another irrational TV-based fear I had as a kid- Car bombs. Thanks to the show Monk. Found out years later that my twin also developed the fear of cars blowing up on ignition after we watched the episode as a family.

The victim hardly feels anything at first. The pellet dissolves completely so the only wound is a tiny red dot, and the coroner presumes a heart attack death.

When you step out the door of your home, you must be paying attention to your environment to discern what is occurring there, to discern any hazards or any changes in approach that are necessary for you.
If people would do this, they would make far fewer mistakes and avoid terrible catastrophes. It only takes one moment of not paying attention to end your life or to alter it completely.

The man was a hero, RIP, Georgi.
I'm from a Slavic country, Croatia, the same territory of former Yugoslavia which was initially communist, and we've had a LOT of trouble with Serbia who are even today supporters of Russia, even amidst the war with Ukraine. Of course, this is about the government of Serbia, those in power and some individuals, not all Serbs. While numerous countries escaped the Yugoslavian fallacies after deciding to declare independence, Croatia had massive trouble with Serbia who straight up declared war and wanted to create "Big Serbia". Awful stuff, the cultures and languages between all of us ex-Yugoslavia country residents are extremely similar, we are all one, just like all humans are one, but culture, ignorance, racism, ableism, bigotry, rhetoric of supremacy and nationalism have done and still are doing extreme harm in these parts. Of course, the more we align with the European Union, the better we'll do, younger generations are also much more connected, educated and open-minded, but older folks tend to be extremely bigoted. What bad upbringing, religious fanaticism, harmful culture and bigotry does to a people is insane...

Unfortunately after the collapse of the soviet union, a lot of socialist states fell with it since the USSR was their main ally and resource for trade. I'm a Marxist leninist myself and it pains me to see the state of former soviet countries being ravaged by greed and capitalism. Anyone who supports Russia supports irridentism, anyone who supports ukraine supports imperialism. There is only one war that should be fought and that is the class war.

@@rhetoric5173 The Cold War lasted quite a long time and even if things cooled down in the US, it took time for eastern Europe after the breakup of the Soviet Union. They're still rebuilding. Someone I know around my age (late 20s) actually remembers his older brother talking about how he was refused a ration of mayonnaise or something because he was too young and basically not considered a person when it was like one small jar per person (adult), as he described it. This was in Romania, don't remember if it was before or after the death of Ceausescu (1989) and I'm not sure how long rationing continued on. This could've been any child born in the 80s just based off of that example, which the oldest of those kids are just in their early 40s now.
