Flying the Bonanza to the Cayman Islands

- Fun IFR weather, lost comms, and running out of fuel made escaping the cold to fly to the islands more difficult than it needed to be. But we stopped at one of the world's coolest airports along the way.

I've been flying since I was 16 and at age 19 flew around the world by myself in the same 1981 A36 Beechcraft Bonanza I still fly, becoming the youngest person ever to solo circumnavigate by aircraft.
Now, I'm sharing all kinds of aviation adventures with YOU! Ride along as we explore the world from the air and get a close up look at some of aviation's best flight experiences and destinations.

I love it when pilots do their 1970's FM radio DJ voice.....
wolfman jack at the helm. LoL. It made me laugh..but his regular voice is way more precise, casually. i wonder why he does that. Real old mics attached to the throat to sound like that, no need for it anymore...like 60 years ago.
I don't like it. Sounds fake. Just talk as you normally do.
I don't understand that style, pointless.
folks try too damn hard to sound cool on the radios...
This has something to with you hearing your own voice when you do the radio.
Yes Me and my son were there for the eclipse! We are in your video! Looking forward to flying to Caymans also.
We were in Nashville around that time to. We were originally there just to visit family but then we found out the eclipse was going on so we got to see it. It was cool.
I from the Cayman Islands, and i hope you have a wonderful stay here - Welcome!
Caught your tweet and needed to see this video! Thanks for sharing your experiences and allowing the rest of us to live vicariously through you!
Very nice trip summary, Matt. I can't wait for the next part - that's a trip I'd like to make myself one day in the Bonanza.
Also nice to see Mr. Stratz there at the end. (Hi, Greg!)
Great videos. Didn't realize that "snacks" were such a big part of flying. LOL!
That might be the best thumbnail on any aviation channel. Absolutely fantastic.
"2019 was a wild year, but now its 2020" care to rephrase that buddy?
2020 says “hold my beer”
He's rich you think he's sitting at home like you hahaha
this comment definitely aged well... lol crazier and crazier
Daddy’s money! Certainly did not earn it.
@@marcusrussell8660 he did though look at his wikipedia
I just passed 200 hrs. I really need to get my instrument. Your videos keep me inspired!!!
Hope you are well. Miss your frequent posts.
I live right next to the fly-in in Port Orange, probably heard you coming in lol.
Spruce Creek?
I’m doing my flight training at Nashville Flight Training which is literally right beside the Signature building, so that’s kinda cool! Awesome video man
So cool to see a familiar FBO on your channel! I have fond memories of Hangar 9 at Aberdeen, on the way back from Oshkosh 2019!!! The gentleman in charge there was the nicest man. I still remember his words, "Aviation has been good to me through the years". If I recall correctly, I think he used to fly up in Alaska. But I could be wrong. I wish I remembered his name.
And we even got to meet the owner of the P-51 Sierra Sue! All during a short refueling stop.
That’d be Darryl. He taught me how to fly.
Matt Guthmiller wow! Aviation is a small world.
KiaOra from New Zealand. Enjoy your vids team. You go to places we simply are not close too here downunder. Thanks for the teachings and entertainment. Kia Kaha
I live in Cayman. When you come back, fly me the hell out of here! Seriously
Great video, incredible flight! Glad you had a great time, the Caymans are an absolutely amazing destination! Thank you for letting us ride along! All the best from the west coast of Florida USA!!!
You had the heart to film that delicious-looking food in close up and Full HD? Murder! :) (Nice flight, BTW!).
Shame that you didn't do this trip earlier (before the rules changed) and get to land in Cuba. I flew my Dakota to Cuba in 2016... what a great experience... ours was the only aircraft on the ground at Cienfuegos.
Glad to see everyone's Professional Tape Worms are in Full Swing as usual.
Cheers from the Oil Patch in Central WY
14:31 yes you were at Mcminnville TN for the eclipse
You may not have been high enough North of Atlanta. I had a similar issue the other day out of DNN. They couldn't hear me while I was around 3500 so I climbed up a bit. Interestingly, also with a GTN 750, but who knows.
ga1205 - flying S of Atlanta yesterday, and twice they had to have pilots relay messages.
I love Cayman. i mean, i do live here so.. i gotta love it! to prove i live hear the place you were sitting at in 0:22 looked like the westin on seven mile.
You flew over my airspace in this video, neat.
KMLI
Great looking plane!
Awesome as always. Thanks Matt!
(6:57) “I love the smell of jet fuel in the morning.” Smells like...victory.
Someday this flight will end...
It smells like money!
You should Come to the Dominican Republic one day! You'll be amazed! More than Welcomed here!
Just discovered your channel and now I’m looking into flying lessons.
You should also be looking into finding a trust fund to pay for it all.
Did you start lessons?
My blood sugar spiked watching all this oreos!
The Flying Saucer here in Nashville is the place to be for sure! Good call.
I believe you were at McMinn County, Athens TN for the eclipse. Not McMinnville.
Wrong
@@bingobango170 Scott is correct actually.
Alan Brock Images you are wrong. Are you just saying I’m wrong because I’m a person of color??’!!! You are a racist
@@bingobango170 - Whatever color you are, you're an idiot.
I was a little late viewing this video. I live near McMinnville TN in Sparta. I fly out of KSRB/ next time your in this area stop by. They will have all the fuel you need. Great video Matt
The more of your videos I watch, the more convinced I am that you must have a "tape worm" three feet long! Your appetite is insatiable!
Awesome video! I wish I could be doing this!
Great video, another destination for us to try to get too...
Looks like "Everybody" uploaded videos today !!!
A most interesting night flight. Info not just aviation related. Cheers Matt.
Kind of reminds me of when I was 17 and getting my pilots license. My dash view was all mechanical though, I'm 55 now. Cool video. 👍🏻😎
At 9:10 you pulled out the exact same snack I have on my table!!
Wish I had a friend like you when I was younger lol
Really awesome video...thanks for sharing...
The pub mix ✊😔 a staple of any good time is pub mix
McMinnville was the westernmost point that got to see the full eclipse. I live about 30 min from there and that’s where we went to see it too. I just found your channel so not sure if you have been here, but about 30 miles west is KTHA (my home airport) which is the home of the Beechcraft Heritage museum. You should check it out sometime.
Owen coming in clutch with the snacks!
On another flying channel, the pilot suggested that someone write a book about all the restaurants at the different executive airports and make suggestions for others in the area. You seem uniquely positioned to write such a tome.
Because of your videos I now fly a Bonanza and always have a well equipped snack bag.
Amazing video !!! Congratulations and thanks !!!!!! Never stop flying
Recently discovered this channel. Awesome content.
Stumbled upon this video today, didn’t realize Lochie was in this one. For those of you that didn’t get the chance to know him in person he was one of a kind. Unfortunately, he and his fiancé passed away a few months ago in a GA accident doing exactly what he loved. He and I had a lot of flying adventures together. I miss flying with him and miss talking aviation with him.
Matt's got his signature checkered Blue Shirt on!...
CableGuyJoe . . . and wearing shorts departing KBNA with temps in the 40’s or low 50’s at best.
It’s a sponsor
Oh God to have your metabolism.... lol. Hey, lack of Oreos is a no go item.
Love your flying adventures. As an old USAF C-130 pilot, envy your freedom of the skies. What I also envy...almost as much...is how much cookies, cakes, desserts, ice cream, etc. you eat while flying and on the ground without, it seems, not gaining an ounce. I gain 5 lbs watching every video. 😂 Fly safe bub.
It’s so cool you really made your passion into your livelihood
Sweet content bro! Love watching these. Where is the next video?
Student Pilot here. I can't wait for the day when I can say I am comfortable on the radio. That day is far far away lol.
3K feet and hungry? Time for a non-endorsed product placement for Oreo’s!
If you’re ever down in Tennessee near KCSV burgers are on me for everything I’ve learned from your videos. *makes note to monitor Guard on Comm 2*
A warm welcome to the Cayman Islands from a local Caymanian!!
Hello Greetings from the west coast of Florida , USA . I've been to your beautiful Island several times decades ago . One time I was there I had lunch with The Chief of Police and his lovely wife . The Chiefs Aunt was working at the VA Hospital I was working at north of New York City . I had a nice time . After lunch the Chief sent an air-conditioned car to give me a private tour of the Island .
Man, it´s 22 gal/h at 78%?! Wow. Awesome video, I love those night shots. Looking forward to the next one! Thank you.
That cliffhanger tho!
The 2019 Cuban Bonanza Crisis
Leaving us with Cuban suspense? Can not wait for the next one.
that spruce creek airport looks awesome! nice vlog, thanks, matt!
"2019 was a wild year, now it's 2020" - Yeah Right Matt!
Next time you're in the Nashville area, look us up in Springfield for cheap AV Gas at M91.
Impressive record. Have you ever visited Guyana, South America?
You are most welcomed here.
Safe flights
Tennessee subscriber here. I bet you were in Athens TN, I live about 4O mins north of it and I jumped in my boat and headed down Watts Bar to watch the eclipse. Anyway this was some great content keep it up.
Eagerly following this series. We have been wanting to take our TR182 RG to the islands for a while now and Grand Cayman is on the list. Looking forward to part two to see how you were able to handle Cuba and the overflight permit stuff. This prompted me to read up on AOPA and where it may not be impossible it does seem rather difficult. Till part 2....
Nashville is a cool place been down there 2 times to see family.
Next time you are in the PNW you should visit the Central Washington University aviation program out of KELN
Great video. Thanks for sharing
Hi Matt.
Granted it's quite difficult to see what is really going on from a quick snapshot in a video. Although I'm looking at the light brown sludge build up inside your motor oil fill tube when you were checking the oil level in the opening of this video. That sludge build up could be the result of water being mixed in with your motor oil maybe through excessive condensation? I could be completely wrong, but I would hate myself for not alerting you to the possibility.
I saw that too, something not right. Mine never looks like that.
@@bonanzadriver377d5 I saw that also. You better find the cause ASAP.
Im curious on the end of this problem
You are correct. It is something that stands out like a sore thumb at the beginning of the video. Quite likely a blocked breather due to the icy conditions. It is very bad that a pilot does not notice this, let alone before breaking in a new cylinder with a long flight ahead including an over water leg. Normally, if the breather was blocked it would be reasonable to fly after clearing it and checking the oil was not badly contaminated, as long as there are good options for a precautionary landing. However, he was about to break the cylinder in so the last thing you want is to be doing that with bad oil and in this case I would definitely want an oil change. In the end an iced up breather would resolve itslef as he flew somewhere warmer, plus the oil will soon be changed post break-in, but In the meantime he likely glazed the cylinder to some extent by breaking it in with contaminated oil. The bigger issue is the general lack of observation skills during preflight, and even if he isn't expected to know why the sludge is there, the lack of curiosity that would lead him to seek the advice of someone more knowledgeable.
I noticed that, too. I have seen it many times in rental airplanes in the winter in Duluth, MN, where I fly, but never knew what caused it. I have not seen it in my Cessna.
You landed at McMinn County (KMMI) for the eclipse...my home airport.
Nice,,Bon voyage,we'll be watching Part 2
How many hours per year are you flying? how many hours on plane TT, engine SMOH? How many oreos per hour does the pilot consume? Any weight and balance issues with the Bonanza? I heard that they had aft cg problems, are you carbing up to reduce that potential?
Looking forward to part two of the Cayman Islands. If you ever fly into JQF, let us know as I would love to see N367HP up close
You make it look so easy, very lmpresive !
man u cant seem to stay outta trouble lol.. quit buggin other countries haha. great vid as always!
Greetings from Ireland just discovered you
How did you get the thumbnail picture? Did you hire an aerial photographer?
Great job
ty jill
Soooooooooooooooooo...when are you going to trade the Bonanza in and move up to a TBM?
Flight following is so awesome and unique!!
You guys eat so well
Bonanza is certified to fly on icy condition?
ah! the smell of jet fuel! love these videos👍👍👍
My grandmother lives right next to that airport in Port Orange
A belated happy new year for 2020 - the FBO was on holiday mode!
come to cali! i would love to do a tour with you and get some amazing footage
Thanks for posting! A real inspiration! Would you mind sharing a few of the operating stats of the Bonanza, please? I am interested in your cruse speed as indicated, GPH, your leaning procedure, and what type of engine you have. Thanks!
Would you ever consider giving your camera settings? Great high quality videos!!!
they are all in HD or UHD - and they dail in well with exposure to capture nice clean images... what info you need exacly? might be able to help.
As always Matt, awesome content, Looking forward to part 2 :)
You do a lot of traveling in your Bonanza that's cool
Awesome video.
I can't wait for Part 2
Full glass electronic cockpit with just 2 analog backup instruments ? ... nostalgia to F33 Bonanza & V-tail beauties...
Hey I live real close to Aberdeen! I just subbed cool channel
Chocolate peanut butter? I don't think we have that in Italy! Send some
You guys need some healthier snacks! Grapes, cheese slices and crackers are my favorites in the plane. Small easy to handle and not too messy.
I like pulled pork sliders and wing dings.
That's Fantastic!!!!!.
But thanks for the “free “ flight. You should fly to Germany 🇩🇪 and fly over the Neuschwanstein castle and other castles there. That’s a really pretty country. Hope you have a great 2020, Matt. See ya on the next flight 🛩.
